Exactly as I hoped it would be I received my new Asus EEE1000HE last week and so far am very pleased.
It is almost as fast as my larger Lenovo T42 laptop, but has even more hard drive memory. I will be taking this with on long distance motorcycle trips with very little room to pack a bigger laptop, and will now be able to do a little work when I get free time. The battery life is exceptionally good even with the bluetooth and the webcam turned on. The keyboard is a comfortable size and easy to operate, though the trackpad buttons are a little stiff.
If you are looking for a good portable computer, I recommend the Asus EEE 1000HE.
I will be installing a 2 gig ram, soon, but it works well as it came out of the box....more info
It survived a SIX FOOT DROP.... ...with only a minor cosmetic injury. That, in itself, speaks to the quality of how this machine was built. (For those of you who are wondering, I was stupidly holding the open machine high above my head with one hand to prevent my toddler from getting her sticky paws all over it when it slipped out of my hand and hit the floor. It lost a plastic corner of the lid, but is otherwise intact and okay. I'm sure my toddler figures that it serves me right, LOL.)
I love the idea of a netbook. It's ultra-portable at an ultra-reasonable price point--especially for those of us who use the computer mainly to surf the web or for basic word processing functions. The screen is smaller than I'd prefer, but it's a trade off for its portability and affordability, I suppose. I'm a touch-typist and I have gotten along reasonably with the keyboard, though I'm constantly hitting the wrong keys and the mouse keeps moving to another part of the document inexplicably. So I'm not thrilled with that. However, Asus has done an amazing job with the touchpad. I thought I'd be annoyed with how small it was, but after I got used to the uber-sophisticated touchpad software, I was able to do a range of mouse functions using 1, 2, and 3 finger motions and taps on the touch-pad. The left click mouse button was extremely hard to depress for the first few weeks of owning this machine and I hated it with a vengeance, but it's gotten easier to push.
Upon other reviewers' recommendations, I installed an additional 2 GB of RAM for 25 bucks which was super easy to put in. (Just remember to restart your computer after installing and keep pushing F2. Once you get to the system settings, press F10 to accept the setting in BIOS.) I find that my Asus works as fast and as well as the Dell laptop that I replaced.
The Asus also comes with Star Office pre-installed, which takes a little getting used to if you're accustomed to Microsoft Office, but it works just fine. My biggest complaint is that the speakers on the Asus stinks. It's very quiet even in a silent home, almost impossible to hear when there's ambient noise. Headphones are almost always a must. I thought my husband's Apple MacBook had bad speakers, but the Asus is worse.
But if you don't have sophisticated needs, I find that this netbook more than amply meets them. I highly recommend it!...more info
Good things come in small packages... I use the ASUS PC 1000HE mostly for travel. It beats lugging around a full size laptop and with the extended battery life I am not constantly on the lookout for a plug-in.
It does take a little getting used to the small screen and keyboard but I expected it and in no time I adapted to it. When using the ASUS for a lengthly time and there is a larger monitor available I connect to it and that solves the small screen issue.
I have had no problems with my 1000HE. I do forget sometimes that it doesn't have a cd/dvd drive such as when I was going to load Office 2007. However, a quick trip to Comp USA for an inexpensive external drive fixed that.
To sum it up, it is exactly what it appears to be. I am extremely happy with the purchase and feel that I made a great decision in buying this
computer for it fits my needs very well.
Great machine, but get the HE I love my Eee HA--no complaints whatsoever--but just 2-3 weeks after I bought it Asus came out with the HE, which is basically the HA with Bluetooth, a 9.5 hr battery (the HA has a 7 hr battery), and they fixed the terrible placement of the right hand Shift key with the HE.... That said, my HA has been a workhorse on the road, and I use it in place of my old desktop PC at home when I connect it to an exterior monitor and keyboard. The 10 inch Asus netbooks are a ton of computer for the money... and it weighs just a little over 3 lbs. (I'm a musician and travel constantly. What a relief to shed 3+ lbs of carry on weight!) BTW I dropped my Eee on a hard floor last week and NO damage was done. Amazing. Oh yeah, no need to buy a soft case because it comes with one that'll do fine if it's going in your briefcase or backpack....more info
Asus Eee PC Owned this unit since April.
It did everything they promised.
Blue tooth synced perfectly with other units.
Start up and usage was quick and efficient.
Much more on this mini PC than I expected considering the price and size.
No need for a laptop if you just want to use the internet, email and a few other programs.
Very quick startup and shut down.
Only problems were a red line running down the screen which has pretty much disappeared after using for a bit and resolution is not the greatest and sound is not going to be loud enough to hear across the room. Need laptop for that.
My family refers to it as "my little laptop" because they say it's too small for them to use (males) but the minute I leave the room, they are using it.
Doesn't give off the heat as a regular lap top which is a big plus. Carrying it around is a breeze as it's the size of a hard cover book.
You can even fit this into a large purse so going through the airport will be a breeze and a back saver.
Long battery life so you can take from room to room without worrying about the battery dying.
Great for placing on the kitchen counter if you need a recipe because the internet is fast and it's small and lightweight and doesn't take up a lot of space.
ASUS EeePC I bought the EeePC to use when traveling. I got tired of having to go to the cities' library and wait to use their machines. This PC rocks!!!! It is so easy to use. I especially like how fast it responds. Never having used a netbook before I'm still getting used to the light touch. I would highly recommend ASUS to anyone who wants a light, fast machine that doesn't take a 2 pound manual to learn to use....more info
One of the best of its class! I did intensive internet study before buying, and this winner is what I finally picked. The keyboard is far better than the competition, and the battery life is outstanding. The ASUS quality is excellent for a PC at this price range. Highly recommended! ...more info
Is it possible to fall in love with a computer This Asus net book is performing well beyond my expectations. Both my Mom and I received our new toys about a week ago. Based on the research and reviews about this net book, I was under the impression that there would be no multi-tasking. This turned out to be false. We can open multiple browser tabs and several applications at once. Page downloads are very quick and the screen resolution is amazing. In fact there are only two negatives I would like to discuss. First, the touch pad is very sensitive. This can be solved simply by getting used to it though. Second, the shipping from Amazon wasn't that great. We ordered our net books at the same time. When they arrived, there was no protection like bubble wrap. As a result, one net book was DOA. However, the customer service from Asus was quick and Amazon shipped a new one out the same day. In a nutshell, this is a great computer that is quick, fun, multi-tasking, and portable. In fact I am typing this while camping. I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a secondary computer....more info
ASUS EEPC 1000HE This NetBook is Great for a travel! I upgraded the ram to 2 gig, and installed all the programs I normally use. When unplugged from power it slows down the processor speed to conserve battery power. I really like the battery power indicator and have yet to run out of power while using the system.
The battery charged pretty quickly the first time, and the PC is lightweight. The keyboard is far better than I expected, and the screen is good.
I was a little nervous about the screen size and seeing everything I wanted to see in a size I could read, but I can read it just fine. The extra inch of screen size makes a big difference between this computer and the Aspire One. I found the Aspire One to be hard for me to read.
Was happy that it didn't come loaded up with a bunch of promo software that I'd just have to uninstall.
Also, I booted Linux off the USB port using a USB memory stick, and I really like the SD memory card slot for which I bought a class 6 8 gig SD card. It runs the fastest SD card available. I could have purchased the largest and fastest SD card available and it would run it.
I found also the wireless worked fine and at the same distances an internal card in a desktop pc would. It has Bluetooth, which I haven't used yet but given the fact that everything else has worked so well I don't have any fears that the Bluetooth would disappoint me.
So over all I'd without hesitation recommend this computer to anyone who needs portability in a computer.
Very Good Very handy, nice keyboard, battery lasts forever(I have used for more than 7h without recharging it). It is much more than a netbook, it is still better than some notebooks. Very good option for people who is looking for a small laptop. The screen could be a litle bigger, but it is not bad. ...more info
Great little notebook This notebook does everything as advertised. Upgraded the RAM to 2 gigs. Keyboard is user friendly. Product is easy to use and I have had 0 software and hardware issues. Only thing is, it doesn't appear that ASUS support is as user friendly. I just shot them an email asking them what kind of updates (software/bios) I should be making and to this date I have not had a response (1 week now). Other than that I couldn't be happier....more info
nice versatility great lightweight versatile pc. it's got enough performance with the upgraded ram to run most programs short of intense games or massive data plotting programs. good for coffee shops, lectures, and sitting in your living room....more info

I LOVE this laptop I already have 3 laptops... why do I need another one!!??
I travel a lot, and having a small, rugged, lightweight laptop with built-in sound and video capability, lots of storage and memory, and AMAZING battery, is worth making this my 4th laptop. (and the one I am using exclusively now).
The packaging of the ASUS is very sturdy... much stronger feeling than my Dell D400. The keyboard is small, but I am a speedy typer and I haven't had any trouble converting over to my normal hyperspeed on this laptop.
I doubt that I have ever gotten 9.5 hours of battery life while actually USING the laptop, because, of course this is measured by marketing types under 'ideal conditions'. But I get WAY more battery life under all circumstances than I ever did with the Dell. The charger is also much smaller.
The speakers on the Eee have good quality #MUCH better than the crappy ones on the Dell#, but I still have trouble getting enough volume in noisy situation #every laptop I own has this problem#. Of course headphones or powered external speakers will solve this issue.
Sometimes I wish I had a bigger screen, but then I COULD be using my 17" behemouth instead, couldn't I? ...more info
ASUS Eee PC Machine worked perfectly out of the box. Found the Bluetooth a problem using a Microsoft Notebook 5000 BT mouse. It stopped working and when I called tech support they didn't have much to offer. The mouse worked on an Apple laptop. Finally returned the mouse to Frys and with my Eee PC in hand I found a MS 5000 that worked. 95% of my computer use is leisure: web surfing, IM'ing, email etc. This Is a perfect little unit for my needs. It does everything my Dell laptop does save for having the ability to run as many apps. simultaneously. In Battery saver mode I can turn it on at 8am and run till 11pm. Comes out of sleep mode with the press of two keys. With its small footprint and light weight and cool running, I find myself taking it with me just to find the WIFI spots.
Fun machine, I'd buy it again and have recommended it to friends. ...more info
Deffective/Does Not Work I bought this brand new. I booted it for the first time and it said, "Reboot and Select proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key." I called tech support and they could not diagnose the problem." They told me either I have to send it in for repair or try to return it to Amazon. What a mess. I'm not buying an Asus again. I'm a huge fan of Mac's, but if I buy another netbook it will probably be an HP. ...more info
Surprise, AZ ASUS Eee PC 1000HE 10-Inch Netbook (1.66 GHz Intel Atom N280 Processor, 1 GB RAM, 160 GB Hard Drive, 10 GB Eee Storage, Bluetooth, XP Home, 9.5 Hour Battery Life) Blue]
Lovin-it! I initially thought it might be hard to get used to the size of the smaller keyboard, but after using it for a while, I got used to it. The screen is very clear and brilliant and looks like an HD-TV. This is my second try with the Netbook. The first one (1000HA) arrived damaged but I had no problem getting a refund. I have only had the 1000HE a little less than a month but I can only give it rave reviews up to this point. The battery life is better than the battery life in my Toshiba Qosmio lap top. On my lap top I get about 2 hours. On My ASUS I get about 8 hours. I have not been able to get the back open to replace the memory from 1 gig to 2 gigs but it runs pretty fast without the additional memory. I did purchase the Samsung external CD/DVD Writer as well since the Netbooks do not come with a built-in DVD-Writer. So far everything is working well....more info
You can't beat the price I bought this for my visiting mother-in-law for her to play Chinese stocks while everyone else is asleep, she is not very technically savvy, so I wouldn't want her to mess up with my own laptop and our desktop is on the 2nd floor where our bedroom is. So far it has worked great, its wifi works flawlessly, the size and the weight is just about right, the only thing she is not very happy with is the XP English version, otherwise she would take it back to China....more info

Bad luck! This is one of the best netbooks in the market, but mine came DOA, It had a noisy clacking sound, coming from the hard dive, and then it began to reboot randomly.
I send it back for a refund, I think ill buy a 1005ha when it comes out.>>...more info
9.5 hours on battery is possible with EEE PC, upgrade ram first Great little computer. Upgraded to 2gb ram before installing my software, but for $20 it was an easy choice and super easy job (must update BIOS to see 2gb in system info).
I do recommend "sharing" your optical drive on a networked computer for software installs, but any usb optical drive can plug in easily too.
My packaging through J&R had popped airbags so the inner PC box was slammed around a bit, but I never would have known if someone else opened it for me. Keyboard size is a bit smaller, but easy to adjust to with extended use. Screen size is more of an adjustment if you're used to large/wide screens. My only reason to rate it down is that I would like to see more resolution options from the video card. Buyers should be aware in this PC segment already though.
I have yet to save and run movies. Streaming and wireless are as fast as your network....more info

Great Job! It is a wonderful computer for the price. It does everything I expected and more. I simply wanted it for notetaking and research for school. It is very reliable and starts quickly. A few of the complaints that I have read are trivial things such as firm mousepad buttons or the lack of a glass screen. Seriously though, it only costs under 400. What else do you people want?...more info
Lots of function in this little pc This little pc has been pretty much exactly what I was looking for. It is quick, highly portable, and gets 8+ hours of battery life. I spent some time uninstalling a lot of the bloat (pre-installed programs) that came with it.
I love how quickly it does its initial boot and finds my wireless internet connection. Other than the funny alignment of the shift and arrow keys, the keyboard seems just fine. The computer is nearly silent.
So why not 5 stars? Well, my first shipment from Amazon arrived DOA. I went to the ASUS website (as I could not find a technical support number anywhere in the manual) and filled out the problem report form. I got a reference number and was told to call a phone number for assistance. When I called the number, I was routed through an extensive menu system and finally placed on hold. The guy who finally answered refused to take the reference number I had received online, telling me that ASUS has no way of bringing up that information. When I described the computer's problem (blue screen of death about 30 seconds after boot up, followed by a prompt to insert the boot device), he laughed and told me there was nothing he could do to help and I had to return it where I got it. So, a quick phone call with Amazon had another one on the way (5+ stars for Amazon customer service). The new one works just fine, but I pity anyone who needs to contact ASUS customer service....more info
Energizer Bunny Laptop Unplugged & downloading software from 10 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. and still 2 hours left on the battery!
I received this laptop just in time for an all day executive committee meeting. Luckily I didn't have to take many notes so I spent the majority of the time downloading software (from the Internet since I don't have an external DVD yet). As all others scrambled for outlets and fussed with cords, my little computer was zipping away cord-free for the entire meeting. As usual, I had several screens up and was downloading documents so I thought for sure it would need a charge soon. I was wrong! I'm so impressed with this computer....more info
Best Netbook out there! After reading all the good things about the Netbook, I had to get it.
First, it is lightweight and portable. Some sacrafices are made for this size. There is no DVD drive or number pad on this unit. If you need those items, go for a much larger Notebook. That being said, this Netbook is great! Yes, I did install the 2 GB of 667Mhz memory. That was one easy upgrade. Next, I wanted to see how it worked on a newer version of Windows so I installed Windows 7 on the second partition "D" drive. The 160 GB hard drive is already split in two so I figured that was perfect for my test. The best thing is, you don't need an external DVD drive to install the OS. You just download Magic Disc,
( http://www.magiciso.com/index.htm ) and it will make a virtual DVD drive for you. Then mount the iso on the virtual DVD drive and install! Very easy. I haven't tried to mount a DVD movie on there yet but I think it will work. Just need an 8GB Flash drive to transfer it.
Anyway, I love the keyboard and controls. Not worried about fingerprints on the outside. This Netbook is a "Take anywhere you go" unit that is very fast and portable. Well worth every dollar. Runs Windows XP and Windows 7 RC like a charm with no problems. One thing to do is if you run it without an ac adaptor, the backlight will go down and make it hard to see. Just press fn plus F6 and it will lighten up as you wish. I highly recomend this unit.
Great netbook, works flawlessly with Ubuntu 9.04 This netbook is very nicely designed; even though small, it packs a punch. What's better, it works beautifully with Ubuntu Jaunty. The camera works, the audio works, everything works (and it looks much better than Windows XP Home). Just install edubuntu on top, and it's a perfect gift for any child....more info
