Product Description

The U.S. military detention center at Guant│namo Bay!known to the public as Gitmo!has been called the American Gulag, a scene of medieval horrors where innocent farmers and goat herders swept up in Afghanistan and Iraq have been sequestered, tortured, and abused for years on end without access to legal counsel or basic medical services.

Gordon Cucullu, a retired army colonel, was so appalled by these reports that he decided to see for himself. In a series of visits he inspected every corner of the camp and interviewed dozens of personnel, from guards and interrogators to cooks and nurses. The result!coming just as the Obama administration wants to close the facility!is a riveting description of daily life for both prisoners and guards. Cucullu describes the six camps reserved for different levels of compliance, details the treatment of prisoners, and examines their experiences in detail, including the techniques used to interrogate them, the food they eat, their medical care, how they communicate with one another, and the many ingenious ways they contrive to assault and injure their guards.

While some prisoners were indeed treated harshly in the early days, when the hastily built camp was flooded with battlefield captures and fears ran high of another 9/11-style attack, Cucullu finds that these excesses were quickly corrected. Current treatment and oversight routines exceed the standards of any maximum-security prison in the world.

Despite what the public has heard, these are not innocent goatherds but dedicated jihadists whose overriding goal!as they themselves candidly say!is to kill Americans. Should they now be released to return to the fight, perhaps on American soil? Read this book and decide for yourself.

Customer Reviews:

  • Excellent treatment
If you want to know what has really happened at Guantanamo's detainee facilities and want to avoid the conspiracy whacko rubbish and self-serving lies of those released (while still being made aware of them) then this is the book for you. The author spoke to a wide spectrum of personnel involved in the facility, past and present, and actually VISITED Camp Delta and the now-defunct Camp X-Ray. Learn about the nature of the people who are held there... far from being innocent goatherds at the wrong place at the wrong time these are hardened Islamofascists who simply want to kill or be killed. Their version of Islam is death worship, plain and simple.
Also, the self-serving nature of the legal counsel attempting to secure "rights" for these insurgents and their actual conniving with the prisoners to help them in their despicable cause is also discussed and is very illuminating. Also the fact that al-Qaida actually trains their operatives to lie to the media in order to further goals, facts rarely discussed when statements by released detainees are repeated. Also, the fact that many of these released detainees return to the fight. Incredible.
The short bios of some of the inmates are especially telling, as well as the stories of some of the servicemembers involved in running the facility. If you automatically think the worst of America and its military you won't like this book. If you want to know what it's all really about, you'll love it....more info
  • Finally...the Facts on GITMO

I am amazed by this book. It is as well researched and written as any book I have ever read. If you want a factual tour of GITMO without actually going there, then read this book. After reading the book, I feel like I have personally been there and talked to the guards and commanders and observed the day to day issues. Col. Cucullu has a way with words that helps the reader understand and visualize exactly what he is talking about. By comparison, I have learned absolutely nothing factual from the media or the political critics of GITMO. As one other reviewer said, the Attorney General and the President of the United States should read this book. Even now, with the decision already made by the President to close GITMO (possibly on limited or incorrect information) the information in this book can help avoid additional serious errors as the process to close this facility (and do something yet unknown with the detainees) goes forward. Thank you, Col. Gordon Cucullu for writing this book as a service to your country and military.

  • Why doesn't everyone get it.....
Gordon Cucullu has written such a perceptive and clear description of the situtaion, it's hard for me to understand why everyone doesn't enthusiastically agree with his conclusions. His credentials are impeccable, and he has writing skills worthy of this critical subject. Have you read it, President Obama, and Attorney General Holder?...more info
  • The truth about Gitmo
I was elated to read the truth about Gitmo after constantly reading and hearing the complaints from the ACLU and others who despised the Bush Administration. I am convinced the author has given the readers an honest description of the situation at Gitmo....more info
  • carefully argued & full of facts
I agree with the previous reviewers that "Inside Gitmo" by Gordon Cucullu is a lucid account of the history of the Guantanmo Bay detention center, together with an examination of the public perception Gitmo. Most of the book is devoted to an account of the interviews Cucullu conducted (at his own expense) with Gitmo staff. These accounts include horrifying examples of systematic provocations by prisoners against the guards and medical personnel.

Cucullu is an excellent writer. He is orderly in presenting facts and moderate in drawing conclusions from the evidence he cites. His sympathies clearly lie with his fellow military personnel, but the value of the book from my perspective as a consumer of US news media, is in having solid facts in an hysterical and polemical atmosphere.

This book will make a US citizen proud of the values we all share, and proud of the discipline of our armed forces. More importantly, the book will provide well supported reassurances about the basic character of our military....more info
  • The Truth for Those Who Want It.
I finished reading your book and was amazed at the accuracy. I got it for some leisure reading on a flight but couldn't put it down. Serving for the JTF during 05-06, LTC Cucullu definitely received the briefs that my shop developed with the input from the many entities within the Joint Task Force. I'm still in awe of the professionalism of the all Troopers serving down there.

There were many times I felt that you were given information that so few received or refuse to put in print. Thank you for getting the information out there for all to see. My copy is currently in my possession because I don't want to loose the document that is dog-eared and highlighted with notes in the margins to accentuate the passages I think are important.

I understand that there may have been passages that were excluded during editing but still surprised at the lack of information about the coordination for disposition of the detainee remains and the comments we received from the country representatives that came to pick them up. That information would have accentuated the extensive efforts we had to expend to ensure cultural concerns were met, even in death. There is still a need for providing real stories of the detention facility that the main stream media refuses to print. Everyone in Washington, making decisions about the future of GTMO, should read it.

  • Great book, about keeping combatants off the field of battle
This is a great book, a real page turner. Gives you the lowdown on what really goes on at Gitmo, and how the military personal behave and how the detainees behave. Shows the great leadership in the US military, and how dedicated they are to their Mission. Defending the USA from all enemies.
This book details the life of not only the detainees, also the guards, the military commander, the general layout of the camp, the precautions taken by the guards to protect the detainees, the abuse the guards take by having foul fluids thrown on them by detainees, etc.
I very highly recommend this book and wish that it were on the shelves of each and every high school in the USA.
