Stylishly designed, this Toshiba Satellite features a large, bright 16-inch LCD (1366 x 768)--with a true 16:9 aspect ratio and 720p native high-definition resolution. It's also great for using as a media center, with Toshiba's Express Media Player enabling you to bypass the system and access CDs and DVDs with a touch of button. The dual-layer DVDí└RW drive also burns CDs and offers LabelFlash print functionality. The integrated webcam does more than just video chats. It includes Toshiba Face Recognition capabilities--the ultimate hands-free, hassle-free way to log onto your laptop. Just show your face to the webcam--no keeping track of hard-to-remember passwords and no unnecessary typing. And if you're using one laptop for several users--say for the whole family or for a small business--Toshiba Face Recognition lets you switch profiles with one simple look.

It's powered by the 2.0 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T6400 processor, which boosts speed, reduces power requirements, and saves on battery life. It also offers a fast 800 MHz front-side bus speed and 2 MB L2 cache. It also includes Intel's 5100AGN wireless LAN, which will connect to draft 802.11n routers and offers compatibility with 802.11a/b/g networks as well. This PC also comes preinstalled with the 64-bit version of Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium, which includes all of the Windows Media Center capabilities for turning your PC into an all-in-one home entertainment center. The Basics

  • Processor: The Intel Core 2 Duo T6400 processor has a 2.0 GHz processor speed, fast 800 MHz front-side bus (FSB), and 2 MB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)

With two computational execution cores in a single processor, it provides greater system response when running multi-threaded applications simultaneously with no significant increase in power consumption. It's optimized for multitasking and is ready to support the Microsoft Windows Vista operating system. It can simultaneously run multiple demanding applications--such as graphics-intensive games or serious number-crunching business productivity applications--while downloading music or running virus-scanning security programs in the background. Some of the advanced Intel innovations of the Core 2 Duo processor include:

    • Smart Memory Access: Improves system performance by hiding memory latency, thus optimizing the use of available computer data bandwidth to provide data to the processor when and where it is needed.
    • Advanced Digital Media Boost: Effectively doubles the execution speed for instructions used widely in multimedia and graphics applications.
    • Dynamic Power Coordination: Coordinates Enhanced Intel SpeedStep Technology and idle power-management state (C-states) transitions independently per core to help save power.
    • Deeper Sleep with Dynamic Cache Sizing: Saves power by flushing cache data to system memory during periods of inactivity to lower CPU voltage.

  • Hard Drive: The extra-large 400 GB Serial ATA (SATA) hard drive (5400 RPM) offers a wealth of storage space, perfect for storing a vast multimedia collection or for editing digital video. This SATA hard drive also quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data--akin to Firewire and USB 2.0.

  • Memory: The 4 GB of installed RAM (PC6400, 2 x 2 GB) maximizes the capacity of this notebook, and it also offers an ultra-fast 800 MHz speed.

  • DVD/CD Drive: The dual-layer Labelflash DVD drive is compatible with a wide range of formats, including both DVD+RW and DVD-RW discs, CD-RW discs, and dual-layer (DL) DVDí└R discs, which can hold up to 8.5 GB of data--great for backing up your MP3 collection or your most important documents. It features the following speeds: 6x for both DVDí└R DL, 8x for both single-layer DVDí└R, 8x DVD+RW, 6x DVD-RW, 5x DVD-RAM, and 24x/16x for CD-R/RW. It reads DVD-ROM discs at 8x and CD-ROMs at 24x.

With the Labelflash functionality, you can burn high-resolution, high-contrast pictures on the label side of DVD discs using the same laser used for data recording. Enjoy transparency and high-quality not found in traditional printable media. All you need is a Labelflash DVD disc to start labeling without a printer.

  • Keyboard & Mouse: This notebook has a standard 86-key keyboard and electro-static two-button touchpad. It also offers a launch button for the Express CD/DVD media player and control buttons (play, stop, next, previous) as well as a volume control dial.
Screen, Video & Audio
The 16-inch WXGA LCD has a resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels--perfect for watching movies in their intended 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio. It also provides TruBrite technology, which makes images brighter and more vivid thanks to its anti-glare feature. Video is powered by the ATI Radeon HD 3650, which provides 512 MB of discrete graphics memory as well as up to 2301 MB of total available graphics memory as allocated by Windows Vista. ATI Radeon HD 3600 Series graphics processors have breakthrough efficiency, with phenomenal performance-per-watt and energy-saving features. Advance to the next generation of gaming with superior performance, more lifelike graphics, superb lighting and support for the latest Microsoft DirectX 10.1. Smooth edges, sharp images, and complex facial and character animations make for an exceptional gaming experience that will keep you immersed for hours.

This notebook also features an integrated audio card and two Harman Kardon stereo speakers.

Networking, Connectivity & Expansion
Be ready for the next platform in wireless connectivity with the integrated quad-mode Intel Wireless 5100AGN Wi-Fi chip. Based on the draft 802.11n Wi-Fi specification, it offers up to five times the performance and twice the wireless range as existing 802.11g wireless. It's also backward compatible with 802.11b/g networks (commonly found in home routers and Wi-Fi hotspots) as well as 802.11a networks (which has a higher throughput, but more limited range--great for closed office environments).

It also includes a next-generation ExpressCard card slot (replacing the PCMCIA slot), which lets you take advantage of thinner, faster, and lighter expansion cards for even more advanced wireless, networking, storage, and security features.

It comes with an HDMI video output, which extends full 1080p support to HD displays as well as provides uncompressed digital audio and video via a single cable. Here's the full list of connection options:

  • 4 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players (including 1 eSATA/USB combo port)
  • 1 FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link) port for connecting digital video camcorders and other peripherals
  • Digital video out: HDMI
  • Analog video out: VGA and S-Video
  • 1 ExpressCard 54/34 slot
  • 1 headphone jack (with SPDIF digital output for 5.1-channel surround sound)
  • 1 microphone jack

  • 10/100 Fast Ethernet networking
  • 56K modem (V.90)

  • Hopeless
The Toshiba Satellite A355-S6925 16.0-Inch Laptop is under maintenance since 04-Apr-2009 ,after purchased on February 9, 2009 from order number: 103-6410839-3856257, Power failure, to now not repaired yet by local Toshiba support....more info
  • I'll need to buy a seatbelt!
I'm a professional photographer and graphic designer. I run a several applicatiions at a time and process a lot of 21 megapixel images at once. This Toshiba does what I tell it to RIGHT NOW.

You don't know what you're buying into until you have to deal with customer service. I found that the wireless internet feature didn't work and with great trepidation phoned their customer service number. I got a real person I could understand and she worked towards the solution, but had to pass me along to a higher tech who patiently worked with me. He had me un-install some stuff (I'm not a techie) and re-install it again. This took time, and he asked if he could call me back when it was done. He phoned back moments after the process finished (he must've set a timer) and resolved the problem. Now I know I not only have a computer which thoroughly meets my needs, but that I have customer support if I need it....more info
  • Great...
This laptop Is so great...blazing fast and you can play lots of games at decent performance...but some of the new games won't be that great specially at high resolution ( like Crysis for instance).....but the only problem that i find annoying is the smudgy dusty chassis.....fusion looks cool but if there's a lot of dust in the air you have to clean your laptop almost daily....and the price dropped 50 $ 2 daYS AFTER i bought it

final thoughts: great multitasking laptop for every day use and casual gaming... but for hardcore gamers u have to consider a higher laptop for some extra bucks...more info
  • Not Too Pleased...
Not too pleased, so far. CONS: Several of my programs won't work with Windows Vista 64-bit. Many of my favorite websites won't work with Vista 64-bit or Internet Explorer 8, both on this computer. The mouse pad/mouse buttons are quirky, imprecise, difficult to use (despite repeated adjustments) and often unresponsive. The mouse buttons are harder to push than normal, especially for someone with arthritis. The strangely textured mouse pad gets very warm, also feels staticky, which during use, seems to make my thumb/finger feel somewhat numb/tingly. (Never had that happen before.) The keyboard glares terribly, which is distracting and makes it very difficult to use, especially for those who need to look at the keys occasionally. It is also slippery when typing, causing errors. (Never had that problem before.) Don't like the glossy texture, at all, as it ALWAYS looks terribly "fingerprinty" and dirty, no matter what I do! I bought a 16" screen, so it would appear slightly bigger and easier to see, than my 15.4" screen (paid extra), but in fact the 16" screen is 1/2 inch SHORTER than my other one and only 5/8 inch wider. Not worth the extra money; harder to see. Lastly, slower than I expected, full of junk software, no rescue disks (better make your own, first thing!), Toshiba customer service is terrible, the caps lock light is difficult to see and several of the plugs/ports are flimsy. PROS: The speakers seem nice. It has an S-video port, which was a main reason for this purchase. Don't think I would order this computer again....more info
  • Toshiba A355-S6940 laptop
I am extremely happy with this purchase. As advertized it's fast with plenty of memory & harddrive space, with a large, bright, clear screen.Great for work or play.I did plenty of research before deciding on this laptop & I can honestly say this has the most bang for the buck!would recommend.
The only complaint (if you would even call it that) would be the way Toshiba went about lighting up the base section or keybaord section of the laptop.I think it would have been more usefull too have the actual numbers & letters on the keys light up instead of the line(light)above the touch pad & the dvd controls....more info
  • Computer good, compatibility with existing environment poor
The computer works great; however, if I had it to do over again, I would stay with 32 bits. My internet provided security is not compatible and I discovered that many other services I utilize are not accessible in the 64 bit mode so I had to set explorer to run in the 32 bit mode to fully utilize this computer. Amazon is a great seller, Toshiba makes a great computer but I discovered the expensive way that the world, in general, is not ready for 64 bits. Lesson learned!...more info
  • Great Laptop
I wanted an allround laptop and this is just about how all round it can get for $800. To start with, its a stunner to look at. I have owned it for about a month now and I ve used it so far to watch movies, browse internet as well as download heavy files (left it on for more than 24hours once) and listening to songs. I ve attached my Altec Lansing MX5021 to them and they have this Dolby tool that fire up its bass. Its a great buy, GO FOR IT!...more info
  • Just right
I have had this computer for 2 weeks and I must say that I could not ask for anything more. The letterbox screen is just wonderful. The screen measures smaller than my not so dearly departed desktop, but seems twice as big with beautiful resolution. The speakers are quite fine. I am listening to Wisconsin Public Radio HD classical musio as I type this and am completely satisfied with the sound. Not everyone will be. The keypad is very easy to use. The computer comes with more add-ons that I would ever be able to use. Case and keyboard smudges are insignifanct when compared to the entire quality of this product....more info
  • Very Happy
I spent way tooooo long researching and reading and thinking about which laptop to buy and then bought the Toshiba. I'm sure other choices would have worked for me as well, but I'm VERY happy with the Toshiba.

It looks good, which, while not a big factor, is a nice bonus. It's fast. I've used a number of other PC's running Vista and they've all been pretty slow, so I think the 4GB of memory is a big help. This laptop has built-in DVD control buttons in the housing above the keyboard and while I wouldn't have bought it because of this feature, it turns out to be REALLY easy to use and helpful!

I've been surprised at how much I like it! I've used products from Dell, HP, Compaq, IBM, Lenovo, Apple and Sony and this Toshiba is, so far, better for me than anything I've used before....more info
  • Terrific laptop
I decided on this laptop as a replacement for our 4 year old HP desktop. The HP had served us well but was beginning to show its age and was not able to handle updated software, like Kodak Easy Share, with higher demands on memory and system resources. After many hours searching info and reviews on the net and visiting local stores, I decided Toshiba seemed to have the most faithful following and repeat customers.

This laptop has everything we were looking for and more. The 16" screen is beautiful and sharp, the speakers surprisingly good for the size, and the keyboard layout works very well providing ample wrist support.

I wasn't sure which processor to go with (Intel or AMD), but as far as I could determine, the only advantage of the more expensive Intel might be in some gaming applications. As I am not much of a gamer, I was very comfortable with the choice of AMD and have had no problems with them in my last 2 machines.

Overall, my biggest challenge was migrating data from my old machine (the DVD drive jammed on the first disk.) Not wanting to buy special transfer cables, etc., I found the express port on this Toshiba accepted all of the old memory cards I could scrounge up from other cameras etc.

Originally, I had planned to purchase from, however I was able to get this machine from Amazon and saved money not having to pay shipping or sales tax.

All in all, this is a great performing and terrific looking machine, and I would highly recommend it....more info
  • I'm Lovin' it!
I bought this computer in Feb 2009 as a replacement for 2 Hp and Compaq laptops I killed off. (still had to finish my taxes). I have had no problems yet, except for finding all my discs to install my old programs.
The screen is bright, the battery lasts quite a while. The Harman Kardon speakers are nice, one of the reasons I bought this model. You can actually watch a movie and hear it too.
Another reason I got this computer was the fact that it had separate ATI Mobility Radeon HD graphics card and Intel Core 2 Duo processor. I really did not want an integrated card. It runs all my programs with no problems. I have been ripping my cd collection and the DVD drive makes short work of it. The 4GB SDRAM and 400 GB HDD are also great features for the money, especially compared to Sony prices.
So far, I am very happy with this Toshiba Satellite A355-S6935.
I also bought a nice bag to tote my new laptop in, which is roomy and fits it well.

  • Solid Laptop for everyday tasks
I have this laptop for a week. First thing you should do when turn on the laptop, make recovery discs and driver disc using toshiba preinstalled software, just open the program and it will inform you pop blank dvds in. Quick and easy, then you can do whatever you want with it. It comes with two 250G hard drives. So you can save your files on one drive and dedicate the other to OS to help your laptop run faster. I formated them both and installed a fresh copy of Vista Ultimate 64. It runs flawlessly.

    Here's the pros:
I must say Toshiba did very well on the design, slick and modern look. The speakers are awsome!!! sound very crisp with the bass feature turned off, if you use the bass feature then make sure don't turn the volume all the way up or you will hear the tearing sound from the speakers. The processor is blazing fast, the screen is nice, webcam is decent. Haven't tested the VGA out put. Lots of junk preinstalled but you can uninstall them and should have some kind of software to clean up the registries after.

    Here's the cons:
The buitlt in mic is not very good but is ok in case you don't have a mic. It will give you an annoying feedback when you unplug the front mic. So be certain that you mute the interal mic before unpluging the front mic. When you plug in the front mic, you have to unmute the internal mic in order to hear yourself in the headphone. My older toshiba laptop doesn't have a built-in mic, so i didn't have this prolem.
The FM antena feature would be nice if Toshiba has it built-in
I prefer the power cord in the back, not on the side.
There's no modem (i don't need it) so if you ever need one you should take it into consideration.

Overall, it's a very solid laptop for the price and features as of right now (3/27/09)
