Top new features in Photoshop CS4

The new versions of Photoshop are about much more than just adding new features. They're about providing you with best practices in the tasks you do daily--about making your work in Photoshop not just faster and easier, but more intelligent, and more natively nondestructive. Here are the top new features and enhancements in Photoshop CS4 and Photoshop CS4 Extended.

Live, nondestructive corrections with the Adjustments panel
Photoshop CS4 speeds workflow performance with the Adjustments panel, cutting the time it takes to make nondestructive adjustments like Curves, Levels, Hue/Saturation, and much more. There's no dialog box maze to navigate--just go straight to the task at hand. The Adjustments panel brings the right tool for the right job to your fingertips, dynamically, saving precious time. The panel features the new Vibrance adjustment, giving you greater control over color saturation while preserving delicate tones, such as skin colors. On-image adjustments are now available for Hue/Saturation and Curves. Plus, for even greater convenience and time savings, the panel features a wide variety of modifiable presets for each type of change, including more than 20 new preconfigured, customizable starting points. Photoshop CS4 speeds you through countless tasks with the Adjustments panel.

A range of shots, each with different exposure, color, and focal points (left) automatically becomes a single, color-corrected, expanded depth-of-field image with Auto-Blend Layers. Click to enlarge.

Simply drag the new Rotate View tool outside the image area to spin your canvas to the orientation that works best for you. Click to enlarge.

The new Pixel Grid appears at magnifications of 600% or higher, facilitating the finest detail editing. Click to enlarge.

Bridge CS4 makes it easier to work with all of your image assets, with intuitive, easily discoverable controls for camera import, viewing and sorting, contact-sheet and web-gallery creation. You'll also find more versatile throughput to Photoshop CS4, including opening multiple files as a single, multi-layered image, and much more. Click to enlarge.

Re-editable, feathered, density-controlled masks
The new Masks panel smooths and speeds the creation and adjustment of pixel and vector masks, making it easier than ever to apply effects to precisely defined areas of an image. Now, with simple sliders, you can adjust the density and feathering of a mask, to control both the sharpness of the mask edge and how much of the adjustment effect you'd like to reveal. The Refine Mask feature allows simple yet fine-grained control over the mask size and edges. And Color Range has been upgraded for better accuracy and power. It's a fast way to automatically create powerful and detailed masks based on single or multiple colors, with simple controls for the spatial tolerance and "fuzziness" of the color sampling.

More refined, natural results with Dodge, Burn, and Sponge
In the days of film, paper, safelights, and chemicals, photographers dodged and burned their prints during exposure, to darken and brighten areas of an image as they created it. It was an art that required steady hands and practice to master. The newly refined Dodge, Burn, and Sponge tools in Photoshop CS4 take the pain and practice out of preserving tonal quality while you spot-correct exposure and color saturation. Simply paint the area you want to adjust and get advanced results in a fraction of the time.

Enhanced Auto-Align, Auto-Blend, and new 360-degree panoramas
The automatic alignment and blending technology in Photoshop CS4 enhances a wide variety of features, but nowhere are the improvements more obvious than in Photomergeˇ§. Now, when you stitch a sequence of images into a panorama, enhanced blending combines with new vignetting and geometric distortion corrections to bring you even better results--a panorama with more natural colors blended from one end of the scene to the other. Additional improvements include the ability to create 360-degree panoramas, automatic detection of fish eye lenses to compensate for their inherent distortion, and the new Collage option which rotates and scales individual images as they are combined using Auto-Align and Photomerge.

Extended depth of field
Whether it's the extreme close-up, the microbial world, or simply low-light conditions, there are times when the depth of field you can capture with your camera is extremely shallow. Now, you can shoot the scene with a series of focal points, and use the enhanced Auto-Blend Layers feature to automatically create a new, single image with a depth of field encompassing the entire series. You can even color-correct the images at the same time, automatically. This feature provides breathtaking enhancement of any scene where lighting and depth of field are in short supply.

Fluid canvas rotation
Photoshop CS4 introduces a revolutionary new feature that lets you paint and draw as easily and naturally as sitting down at an easel. With the new Rotate View tool, you can nondestructively spin your canvas to any orientation you desire--a boon to every illustrator, whether you paint by mouse or tablet. No pixel distortion, no craning your head to get the perspective you want, and no matter how you spin your canvas, Photoshop CS4 adjusts your selections, grids, rulers, and other tools and features to match your chosen orientation.

Ultra-smooth, extra-precise pan, zoom, preview, and painting tools
Most modern computers contain a powerful graphics processor (GPU) that is almost like having a second computer inside the box. Photoshop CS4 leverages the power of your GPU with OpenGL technology to blast past the image-viewing restrictions of yesterday. Zoom all the way down to the level of individual pixels, with perfect clarity even at the oddest magnification percentages. Smoothly navigate around the largest images with no stutter or preview lag. Use the new Pixel Grid to easily edit images at the highest magnification. And revel in a faster, easier painting workflow, with brushes you can resize by dragging your mouse; new brush cursors that more clearly preview brush strokes before you make them; and improved, higher precision tablet tracking. Navigating very large images is easier than ever--instantly zoom high overhead to move to a new area of the image, and just as instantly zoom back in to the highest magnification. You can also ¨°toss¨® the image across the screen with the Hand tool--the physics engine in Photoshop CS4 will give you a natural pan in any direction.

Next generation Adobe Bridge CS4
Finding, previewing, and managing all of your image assets jumps to a new level of power and convenience with Adobe Bridge CS4, beginning with faster performance from startup through to handing off images to Photoshop CS4. New path-bar navigation and workspace selection buttons across the top of the Bridge window let you instantly jump to just the right display for every task, including new Camera Import controls, visual folder navigation, and a new Carousel View for larger image-group selections. In the Output workspace, Bridge now features PDF-based contact-sheet creation and web-gallery creation and uploading. You can preview 3D images and panoramas created in Photoshop CS4. The new Search field helps you quickly find images in Bridge, and is also integrated with the Spotlight feature in Mac OS X and the Desktop Search feature in Windowsˇ§ Vista. You can even switch to the new, intuitive List View, with its familiar data display and sorting controls.

Tighter integration with Photoshop Lightroom 2
Professionals and other advanced photographers rely on the one-two punch of Adobe Photoshop and Photoshop Lightroom software as the complete digital photography toolkit. Photoshop CS4 makes this workflow easier than ever, with improved cross-application support for automated functions, such as opening multiple photographs from Lightroom 2 directly into a layered Photoshop document, high dynamic range (HDR) image, panorama, or Smart Object. Lightroom 2 and Adobe Camera Raw also share the same underlying technology, which means the changes you make with Camera Raw 5 in Photoshop CS4 are recognized in Lightroom 2, and vice versa.

Camera Raw 5 with localized, nondestructive adjustments
Providing the first step in the processing of raw data from your digital camera, Camera Raw now enables you to make localized adjustments by simply painting the area to be affected, and then using sliders to control the change. Additional enhancements include Post Crop Vignetting, and gradient-based localized correction. You can apply the same Camera Raw adjustments to TIFF and JPEG photographs, and, as always, the corrections you make are completely nondestructive, with the original files being maintained in their pristine state.

Unified tabbed interface with self-adjusting panels
Photoshop CS4 helps you keep your work area efficient and clutter-free, with a new unified application frame, tab-based interface and self-adjusting panels. You'll notice immediately how the Photoshop interface appears cleaner--instead of having to arrange multiple image windows, Photoshop does it for you with a tab for each open image. Docked panel groups keep to the side of your images, so you have fewer things to move around while you work. Individual panels expand and contract automatically to show you the controls you need, and you can even collapse entire panel groups to their header rows with a single click. Of course, you can still manually arrange floating windows and panels to suit your working style, even moving all of your panels to a second monitor if you prefer.

New Post Crop Vignetting lets you recreate artistic vignette effects in a photograph even after the original edge of the photo has been cropped away. Click to enlarge.

Printing improvements in Photoshop CS4 include 16-bit printing (Mac OS X only) and preview of out-of-gamut colors. Click to enlarge.

The Adobe Kuler panel makes it simple to browse, create, and share color themes online. Click to enlarge.

Smarter Smart Objects
Smart Object layers allow for nondestructive scaling and transformation of Photoshoplayers. With Photoshop CS4, you can now apply perspective transformations to SmartObjects, work with linked layer masks, and use the new Eyedropper tool option to sampleeither the current layer or all of the layers in the Smart Object at once.

More powerful printing options
Photoshop CS4 brings even higher quality to large, detailed images when taken to print. You can now preview out-of-gamut colors and take advantage of a streamlined printing interface. In addition, only on Mac OS X for this release, 16-bit printing is available for the first time, vastly increasing the color depth and clarity possible in printing.

Higher performance on very large images (Windows 64 only)
Photoshop CS4 has now been optimized to take advantage of even more RAM on 64-bit-capable Windows PCs that are running a 64-bit version of Windows Vista.

Additional refinements
The evolution of Photoshop software always includes a vast array of small but important improvements and additions. Extra refinements in Photoshop CS4 include:

  • Support for multi-touch gestures available on newer Apple MacBook Pro and MacBook Air computers running Mac OS X Leopard
  • Clone Stamp and Healing Brush live preview cursor for easier, more precise cloning and healing results

Customer Reviews:

  • Warning: extreme performance issues for some
Warning before upgrading from an earlier version of Photoshop: Download the trial version first. Many many people, including me, are experiencing major performance problems related to the new use of the graphics card GPU. Huge lag when drawing or moving windows around, brush cursors disappearing, buggy color management and many other issues which make this release unusable. Disabling GPU acceleration, or trying some of the other workarounds suggested by Adobe, improve performance but not completely.

Not everyone is experiencing this problem, and I'm sure eventually Adobe and the graphics card makers will come up with a solution. But for now, you should first check the Adobe site to whether your graphics card is on Adobe's list of tested hardware (mine is, but I have the performance problems nevertheless), make sure all your drivers are the latest ones, and either try out the trial version first or wait until you see that Adobe has released a patch....more info
  • Totally amazine product
I can do things I never thought possible in photoshop CS4. My photographs never looked so good....more info
  • Making a great product even better!
This is a from the hip review, since I've only been using the CS4 upgrade for a few days. But folks, once again Adobe has hit the ball out of the park! I'm a longtime Photoshop user and each upgrade so far has been an improvement. This one excels primarily in its workflow improvements.
One of the simplest and most basic upgrades is that you can now keep multiple documents open as tabbed items in your window, just like on a web browser. Its easy to shift between tabs to work on multiple documents. You also have access to icons which allow you to shift between tiled windows (still in tabs!) which makes dragging and dropping images from document to document easier and more efficient.
For the artists out there, there is a new function to the hand tool. Instead of just moving your document back and forth, up and down, now you can rotate it using the hand tool as well, which makes drawing and painting much more intuitive and natural.
The entire program works more quickly and smoothly. CS3 used to hang up for awhile while loading fonts for using the text tool. CS4 does this quickly and effortlessly.
Other improvements include a simpler and more interactive bridge, improved compatibility with InDesign CS3 (which has some much more impressive and substantive improvements of its own - but thats another review!)
    support for more file options.
I'll update this review as I get more into the deep changes in the program, but from this early taste I'll say its well worth the investment. ...more info
  • Great Program
I knew what I was in for. Read up. Program requires a high performance graphics card which in turn requires a larger power supply. Still worth it....more info
  • Photosjop CS4 upgrade
I do really love revolutionary Content Aware Scale(recently bought from... well... I forgot the name of a company). Rotate View Tool (finally copied from Painter's original). Exceptional Dodge and Burn Tools improvements - that's what we expected for a long time! Great addition to Adjustment Layers is Vibrance. New Mask Palette is really good, etc.

    Moderate Thoughts:
Still unsure about User Interface changes - do we need rearrange furniture when we have pales of garbage in the middle of the dining room? As a graphic designer I don't really understand necessity of the Analysis Menu and its contents. 3D Tools still needs a lot of improvements - still weak and rather for wasting of the time.

During last versions Photoshop UI changed dramatically, but for years Adobe ignores upgrades of what suppose to be powerful Photoshop weapon - Filters. Since version 3.0 Filter Menu haven't changed a bit. Still the same useless Blur, Blur More, Sharp, Sharp More. Still the same from grandmother's chest Distort Filters - Pinch, Polar Coordinates, Shear, Spherize, Twirl, Zig-Zag and many more. Photoshop can not be comparable Corel Painter's brushes sets and their options and especially with Image Hose stuff - Photoshop Stamp Tool from the XIX century.

  • Not all that great
A lot of fanfare for an upgrade which is by no means earth shattering, particularly for amateurs. Yes there is an improved interface and non destructive adjustments, but the printing, especially the picture package doesn't work on the Mac, even after you have downloaded from the main disc: English>Goodies>Automate>Picture package, as well as all the necessary Presets. Why are these programs not integrated in the initial installation?
Certainly not worth the price and a real headache for nothing.
I uninstalled my copy and went back to the CS3....more info
  • Upgraded from CS2
I upgraded from CS2 and in that regard, it was worthwhile. There are important imprvements in tools like the TAT, refine edge and the adjustment layers palette that I like very much. If you are upgrading from CS3, you may find that the upgrade is not as worthwhile and may want to wait for CS5, whenever that happens. ...more info
  • Caution - Software still buggy
I took the suggestion of others and downloaded the trial version before purchasing and I'm glad I did. Installed on a 2.4 GHz dual processor Windows XP computer with 3+ GB of memory this CS4 is noticeably slower than CS3 during panning, zooming and other graphics functions. (probably need a graphics board upgrade, I guess, but you would think that the software would detect my configuration and at least not degrade things) And it appears to be buggy, with several cliches including not always updating the icons in the layers pallet and not always updating the photo after making modifications. Also, for some reason, the wheel on my mouse no longer makes the photo zoom in and out as it does on earlier versions of Photoshop - and it's a microsoft mouse - never had problems before. Of course it may be user error and I suppose I ought to be thankful that the software installed without problems. Perhaps when I get more used to some of the differences I'll be happier and actually purchase the upgrade but I think that Adobe needs to patch this product first.

If you really need some of the functions of this upgrade, such as RAW for a newly introduced camera, then I can see trying to use this product, bugs and all. But if you are just planning to upgrade for upgrade sake I would recommend waiting until more users indicate that this program is ready for prime time. I know that's what I'll do.

Update: Under CS4 preferences I found a place where I can select using the scroll wheel to zoom so that problem is fixed. But the issues about updating the photos and layer icons still exist even after I made sure that I am not using any GPUs (Graphics processing units) so any issues regarding hardware and drivers should not be present. Too bad since the Adobe site does show some interesting improvements in CS4 over CS3. Hope they release their revision soon. Meanwhile I'll continue with CS3.

Second Upgrade: I've had much better luck with this product lately. First, on one of the user forums I discovered that those with the Nik software plug-ins were having troubles like I've described but that Nik had released a fix. I use their products and installed their updates, eliminating many, but not all the issues with disappearing icons, etc. Then I called Nik and they gave me a work-around for the remaining issues. I felt that CS4 still runs a bit slower than CS3 but I bought the upgrade and later I purchased an Nvidia 9500 GT graphics card (inexpensive but it works with Photoshop CS4). I've been using CS4 for about a week now and believe that there are some nice new features. Many of them are in camera RAW (not helped by the graphics card) which is now a more full featured editor with selectible adjustments. Scott Kelby's new CS4 book really emphassizes Camera RAW as the main photo postprocessing software and it seems that Adobe is probably going to put more development work here. In photoshop itself the adaptive scaling is also a nice feature as is the preview in the clone brush. All in all CS4 has some non essential new features (unless you shoot in RAW with a camera not supported by CS3) but once you get used to these going back to CS3 feels restrictive....more info
  • Adobe Photoshop CS4 Upgrade
Awsome upgrade. Some things take a little getting use to (long time user so moving some things were ackward at first), but change over was easy. Runs extremely well....more info
  • Photoshop CS4 from CS2
Excellent upgrade. I was surprised at the extent of the improvements. Raw file processing has been improved a lot. Definitely worth it....more info
  • .Photoshop CS4
Adobe does not recognize Photoshop7.0 upgrade to Photoshop CS4. Only CS, CS1,CS2,CS3. Pearl of adobe ask me for the serial numbers of CS4 and PS7.0.
Pearl of Adobe asked for the serial numbers of Photoshop7 and PhotoshopCS4
and told me I could upgrade. Then later, I was told I would need to buy the full version. I could not return CS4 because I had to open the box to give Pearl the serial number. Pearl should have told me in the beginning
that Adobe would not permit Photoshop7.0 upgrade to Photoshop CS4.

Pearl was not honest and up front with me. I was deceived.

  • Great new features, but requires some heavier hardware...
Right off the bat I had a problem with my brush cursor only showing 1/4, 1/2, and even sometimes only a 1/5 of the cursor when I zoomed in. Found out from Adobe that I needed to install the latest video card driver. I had done this only a few weeks before the program was installed, but went to the EVGA site and re-downloaded the driver and re-installed it. It fixed the cursor problem upon restart. No mater what, go to your video card's website and download the latest driver, even if you think yours is updated.

** GPU and OpenGL Features and Limitations in Photoshop CS4:
Upon start-up, PS asks if you want to go to this website to review the tasks CS4 asks of the video card. I HIGHLY recommend you review it:

Very smart in how they are now tasking the video card to offload some of the processing from the CPU. If you turn off the GPU processing support (edit > preferences > performance) you will notice a small drop in performance. Read the list on the website above and you will see why you need a good fast Video card.

We now have a powerful 3D rendering feature, just like Illustrator does. (But, not so powerful if you video card is lagging behind.) Turn off GPU processing, and use a weak CPU and you will find yourself making coffee during 3D rendering.

    ** WORKS WITH CS3:
I have both CS3 and CS4 installed at the same time. No problems using both, only you can't use them at the same time.

I don't know whw picked the font for the UI in CS4, but they should never be in charge of that part again. Horrible chunky font used throughout the interface. Why change from CS3? And the pallets are squared off. CS2's pallets were so nice; why change?

    ** Tabs and Arrange Documents:
Kind of like Dreamweaver, PS now has a tabs layout where you can see all of your open projects. So, no more hidden windows behind your project, for they are all lined up along the top of the workspace.

Arrange Documents feature: You can now quickly arrange your open projects with the click of a button at the top menu. It even has "Match Zoom", "Match Location" and "Match Zoom and Location". Cool.

    ** SMOOTHER:
Zooming in and out (Ctrl-/+), moving the workspace (Spacebar+click) and menus opening and closing are all smooth. Almost like a Flash-menu in the way it works.

As another user mentioned, we see no real additions in the bundled filter category.

Some of the small things I noticed so far:
    1) PS now allows you to select "Zoom Clicked Point to Center" much the same way InDesign does automatically. Nice!
    2) you can 'flick' the workspace around (called "Flick Panning"). In CS3, the workspace moved, but it certainly didn't slide to a stop as if it were floating on an air hockey table. (just a cool thing, but not a program improvement.)
    3) you can assign colors to the menu options. So, now your "Save as" menu item can be green or red, and so on, if you want. You can assign a color to any and every menu item, even remove some from the list.
    4) the Tools pallet stacks more items under one button (i.e. Crop and Slice tools are under the same button.) This is to accommodate the new 3D buttons on the Tools pallet.
    5) I notice more changes in the "image" drop-menu than others. The 'auto' controls have moved, and some are now in the pop-up window (i.e. "auto levels" is now in the "levels" pop-up window. We now have "auto tone", "auto contrast" and "auto color" one level up from where they were before.
    6) They moved the one button I used the most, Screen Mode (F), from the Tools pallet to the top. Oh well, "F, F" it is, until I get used to the new button placement.

I don't notice it taking up any more memory at idle that the CS3 edition did. It also doesn't seem to have the dreaded memory leak that plagued CS3's Photoshop. If it does, I don't notice it.

I'll keep updating this as things arise. Overall, the program works well, and has yet to crash on me....more info

  • Photoshop CS4 upgrade WARNING
My spouse purchased Adobe Creative Suite Premium several years ago. The package included Photoshop CS, GoLive, and other compatible programs. She recently decided to upgrade to Photoshop CS4 since her Photoshop CS showed as a stand alone program on her computer. She verified that she was eligible for the Photshop CS4 Upgrade with an online chat with an Adobe rep. When Photoshop CS4 arrived it would not load even though she had a license for her earlier Photoshop CS. Upon contacting Adobe, we learned she is not eligible for the upgrade because the original Photoshop CS came with A BUNDLED PACKAGE! This was not clear in the eligiblilty requirements shown on Amazon and the Adobe site, and seems a touch unfair considering the original price of the Adobe CS Premium. So beware if you are considering the Photoshop CS4 Upgrade.

As usual, Amazon came through like a champ with quick shipping and a great price. And to Adobe's credit, they are refunding the cost due to the misunderstanding, even though the software package was opened (as most of you know, Amazon cannot refund for an opened software package).

3 stars not for the program, or the performance of Amazon and Adobe, but because the eligility requirements are not clear and somewhat misleading....more info
