Customer Reviews:

  • Upgrade came with a few problems...
Although an upgrade like this is supposed to preserve the user's settings, files, etc, it caused some issues with Norton 360 and with the registry changes necessary to work with the Linksys network storage link. While these were not insurmountable, it was annoying....more info
  • if you are running 64b Vista?
I ran into a catch-22 problem. This edition is a 32-bit version and I took the crazy chance to order my HP laptop with a 64-bit XP Home Premium. The software referred me to a web site to order a new distribution in 64-bit OR change media from DVD to CD-ROM. However, the web site is broken so I ended up having to call support. Microsoft plugged in the product ID from the Anytime Ultimate upgrade and told me they would be shipping new media with a whole new product ID. So, a little pain but a little good - I now have either a 32-bit version or 64-bit version!...more info
  • Vista Upgrade
We have 2 laptops, same brand, same options but the Vista Upgrade worked on only one. Microsoft compatability issues are all over the board and you have no way of knowing if this product will work or not. The laptop it worked on is improved with this product. The laptop it did'nt work on had to be taken to an expert to find out which drivers were not reloaded with Vista and repair. Hope you have access to a computer whiz if you try this product. ...more info
  • Vista SP1
I purchase this product, believe that it containt a 64-bits version, but it doesn't, only have 32-bit version. I think that yours have more detail in this kind of product....more info
  • ATTENTION! will delete all your files
There are 2 ways to install this OS: clean install and upgrade.
The upgrade should leave your files, settings and programs intact.
The truth is that it does leave the software but it will delete any file you have stored in the pc. My documents folder will be empty at the end of the process, as well as your outlook pst file, your desktop, your music and so on...

There is not really a choice, it's almost a clean install anyway.
I had a backup of my files but I did not backup the settings of several programs.
    Shame on Microsoft

installation problems on the side, after few weeks of using vista I have to say I am quite happy and I would not go back to xp

  • Thanks to the other reviewers!
I just wanted to thank the reviewers, I canceled my order for this item because of the the reviews! Thank you. I just purchased a new "Gateway" Laptop and was going to do the upgrade, I will be staying with "64 bit" Home Premium for a long while. I wish Microsoft luck in the future and hope that they learn their lesson because of this....more info
  • Don't get this if you want the 64Bit Version of Vista Ultimate
So far I have called Microsoft 3 times, and have received 3 extra copies of Vista Ultimate 32Bit. My goal was to get the free upgrade to 64Bit, but instead so far I have paid extra to get 3 additional copies of the 32Bit version. They have so far sent me 2 "replacement" DVDs and one set of CDs. I have looked at my email order confirmations several times they say 64 bit just like the Microsoft customer care person says I bought......more info
  • Vista is not broken
I have Vista Ultimate on my Dell E521 and have for about a year now,I recently purchased a new HP DV9910US laptop that came with Vista Home Premium,I just ordered the upgrade pack to Ultimate.Hopefully this says something for Vista. As an update to this review I had Vista Ultimate installed on my HP laptop but alas the graphics onboard will not run dream, therefore I ended up calling Microsoft and getting the 64bit DVD and installing on my HP Pavillion it has a much better graphics card,it runs just great on this machine.just a short note on this upgrade make sure your PC will at least have a decent graphics card.It did install on my Pavillion without a hitch once I received the DVD.It took about an hour and left my files and programs intact....more info
  • Microsoft Hoses Us Again
Microsoft's upgrade from Home Vista to Ultimate Vista - the supposed cutting edge operating system of all time - does not include a disc for 64 bit installation. They send you a disc for a 32 bit upgrade, but charge you for an additional disc in you want the 64 bit upgrade. Another example of why we all hope Linux eventually will triumph....more info
  • Smooth upgrade process, some legacy software issues
The upgrade process went absolutely perfectly, no problems at all. The computer is only a month old; I didn't realize the fax functions I needed were not present in Vista Home Premium and I needed Business or Ultimate.

I wanted the 32-bit version so that as much of my legacy software as possible would still run. That has been largely successful except for a proprietary real estate direct mailing program that is fairly new. Their support said it should install and run fine under Vista, but it won't even start without an error, does not run any functions from the main screen without errors, and won't even close. It requires Task Manager to stop it.

Overall, I am pleased, but still wary. I HAVE heard all the negative reports.

The need for faxing was my primary reason for upgrading from Home Premium. There are a lot of nice extras in Ultimate, most of which I enjoy but could do without. I have not figured out the "sync partners" yet. I could use that in practice, but I don't think the syncing I need to do is worth upgrading everyone else on my LAN (sync partners is only available in Ultimate.)...more info
  • Wonderful Upgrade
Vista Home comes with many laptops but the increased functionality offered through Vista Ultimate is worth the upgrade for my needs due to increased networking capability....more info
