Easy to Use Right Out of the Box

Garmin's own navigation is easy to use
One of Garmin's key product philosophies is, "to make extremely complex technology easy to use for anyone right out of the box," and perhaps nowhere is that better exemplified than in the user interface for Garmin's portable navigation devices.

Garmin's interface is a key to their success and one of the things that makes their devices such a pleasure to use. Simple controls and sub-screens make it easy to enter or search for destinations and get data about your trip.

New -- Voice Recognition

Usable voice recognition is something we've been waiting to see for a long time. Reaching over to type out directions on your GPS isn't just difficult, it can feel downright dangerous. There's even a warning on every GPS not to do it. But who has the time to sit still and punch in a destination? Well, now you can have your hurry and your directions too.

The n??vi 800s aren't the first GPS navigators to offer voice recognition, but the level of flexibility they offer sets a new standard for simple and intuitive use.

The device comes with a little remote control that mounts on your steering wheel. It has two buttons. One is, "listen." The other is, "stop listening". Hit the "listen" button to start voice recognition. Then you can speak any of the words that appear on the display, and the device will understand, or you can ask questions based on most points of interest. Say, "find nearest Italian restaurant," for example, and you’ll get a list of nearby spots. Say "go to" and name of the one you want, and you get turn-by-turn directions to dinner. The n??vi 880 also knows the names of many large business brands, so you can just say, "find place, Starbucks," if that's your coffee mojo.

Of course, if you know the address you want to go to, you can say that too, and the n??vi will give you directions, all without having to reach over to the dashboard and touch it.

Speech recognition is available for American English, British English, European French, European Spanish, German, Italian, and Netherlands Dutch languages.

New -- Enhanced MSN Direct Content (3-month free subscription)

traffic reports An integrated receiver allows you to access enhanced dynamic content from the MSN Direct service. Check the weather, avoid traffic backups, compare local gas prices, get enhanced movie listings, stock information, news and local events when you travel with your unit. Even plan trips from the convenience of your computer, via Windows Live Local, and wirelessly send custom to your n??vi.

Check out a full description of MSN Direct content features, or a coverage map for MSN Direct services.

A 3-month subscription to MSN Direct is included with the device. After that, subscription fees are $49.95 per year, or $129.95 for a lifetime subscription.

Widescreen -- See More of What's Around

The super-bright, 4.3-inch (diagonal) touchscreen display gives is anti-glare for ease of viewing during the day and automatically changes its color profile for easy viewing at night or in dim light. It offers 2d or 3D perspective views.

The widescreen format gives you 70% more actual screen area than a 3.5-inch screen. Primarily this translates into a better view of the area through which you are driving. This is especially useful in showing you what parks, restaurants, ATM, gas stations, etc. are nearby, or in letting you know whether a detour is a good idea. Also, the device itself is larger, meaning controls on the screen are more widely spaced and somewhat easier to push.
Wider screen lets you see more of what's around. Compare these actual size views of a 3-inch (diagonal) screen

3-inch screen

and a 4.3-inch diagonal widescreen

4.3-inch screen

Multi-Destination Routing

This lets you enter several spots into the device (day care - supermarket-cleaners - office - day care, for example) and it will plot the fastest route. And once you've found the best router, the "Route Planning" feature lets you save up to 10 different routes, Garmin touts the feature for providing, "the most efficient route for errands, deliveries and sales calls." The feature also makes this an instant essential accessory for anyone who shops garage sales (you know what we're talking about).

A trip log provides an electronic bread crumb trail of up to 10,000 points, so you can see where you've been on the map.

Where Am I?

Garmin's "Where Am I?" feature is a useful safety feature on all n??vis, but voice recognition makes it even better.

On any n??vi (including this one), you can just tap "Where Am I?" to find the closest hospitals, police stations, fuel stations, nearest address and intersection. Also see your exact latitude and longitude coordinates. With the 800s, all you have to do is say "Where am I?" to get the info.

Where's My Car?

Like the n??vi 700s, the 800s will also remember where you parked. It automatically marks your position when you remove it from the windshield mount, so you can navigate with n??vi on foot and find your way back to your vehicle. Perfect for unfamiliar spots and crowded lots such as amusement parks, stadiums and malls.

First-Rate Map Data

n??vi 250W accepts custom points of interest (POIs). View larger.

The n??vi's Bluetooth capability, microphone and speaker lets match it to any bluetooth-capable phone to make hands-free mobile phone calls. Simply dial the phone number with the n??vi's touch screen keypad to make a call on a compatible phone. To answer an incoming call, just tap the screen and speak into the built-in microphone. Making and taking calls on the road has never been easier, or safer. In addition, Garmin makes it a breeze to look-up and dial numbers from your personalized phone book or even tap into your cell phone's call history log.

Customer Reviews:

  • This is a GREAT GPS
I've had a Garmin 660 that I have loved for the past couple of years so decided to give my spouse the latest & greatest for Christmas this year. We drove across country using this newer model & we couldn't be happier! Garmin has improved on several items from previous versions, such as the volume controls--now you can select which part you want muted, such as voice commands, but keep the bluetooth and entertainment (ie: audiobooks, MP3) at desired levels. There are also several other features that have been improved & they are all quite handy. The only complaint I would have on the logic of the device is some of the routing information--if I am on a specific route & I select the weather or restaurant feature, it would be nice if it gave you an option to just get the information that is in line with the specific route. If that is my only complaint, then you know it is a good device! I highly recommend it....more info
  • great device
Christmas present for my daughter. She loves it!! bluetooth and fm transmitter worked flawlessly. Mp3 player sounded great on the car speakers. I fooled around with it for 2 days while she was here. Im going to get another for myself. I never thought I needed a gps for directions (except on my fishing boat!) but being able to quickly find gas/atm/food or .... is a big plus when away from home. The directions although good were not always the fastest routes....more info

Both Amazon and the seller provide a valuable service and both communicated well so your are up to date on your order .
My order was delivered on time and came as advertised . Thank you ....more info
  • A very good GPS device.
I have been using my Garmin nuvi 880 since its release a few months ago and find that it generally works well. Occasionally (e.g., in San Francisco near Fisherman's Wharf) the map was off by enough that the unit recalculated multiple times while we followed the indicated route; also, at that time the car image on the map vs. actual street location was noticeably off. Not all drivers in my family have been able to use the voice activation successfully. It does work for me, although when the noise level is high (e.g., in a rainstorm with the wipers running) I sometimes have to repeat commands.

We took the Garmin to Virginia when we visited my daughter and it was extremely helpful, allowing my wife and me to confidently embark on trips all around the Richmond area as we looked for a potential new home.

Minor problems aside, I liked the Garmin nuvi 880 enough to give one to my son-in-law for Christmas. BTW, the purchase price has dropped by almost half since I purchased my original unit!...more info
  • Don't buy this unit!!! Read why
Got the unit for my mother in law for christmas and spent two days trying to set it up. 1> The voice function does not work well. Kept trying to send us to a hospital 2> Even the most recent maps are not up to date, whole shopping malls missing that have been there for years. 3> Instructions for turns come only when you're right up on them. 4> MSN after two days could not update nor work the right way. 5> Unit freezes and the only way to get it to shut down is to, open unit, and take out battery, and then reboot. 6> If you need lanes the unit does not show them. 7> Unit is very slow to find locations. 8> It takes way too long to have to input information to find a place or put in directions. 9> The unit won't take my home address in the location I live. You have to set your home to "A location" it shows my home over 500 ft away from where it really is. >10 Unit shuts off on it's own. >11 Screen brightness changes and has to be reset. >12 Update of 880 software did not work and reference to 850 was only update the machine would take after trying everything else.

This is the worst electronic device I have ever bought. I'm in a big city on the MSN and Garmin coverage areas. I'd say stay away from this unit at ALL costs. Also returning it is a nightmare. It's not sold by Amazon but a 2nd party reseller. The fighting to get a refund is beyond anything I've ever seen. What a nightmare this purchase has been....more info
  • surprised me
I bought this for my wife because she is geographic illerate. Didn't think I would like it at all (maybe because i'm a guy and don't need directions),but we took it on a ski trip north day after christmas. We hit an ice storm that had semi's and cars unable to make it and down hills. Had it not been for the garmin and the detour feature we would have never had made it. We would get some were the road was blocked and hit detour take us right a round and be on our way again....more info
  • Don't buy this for the voice recognition
I recently bought a Nuvi 850 for the only one of our three cars that doesn't have a factory nav system and for rental cars. I am pretty well spoiled by factory system integration but I figured that the aftermarket portable crowd may have figured out how to make a decent product at this point. And they have. Decent, not great.

First, the primary value of a nav system comes from the basics. Maps, routing engine, receiver, a well designed user interface, and a great screen. Garmin does a great job with these basics. And you get all this basic goodness in even their lower end widescreen Nuvi models like the 260W or 760.

But, when it comes to some other stuff well, they have some work left to do.

Volume - the Nuvi 850 is barely audible at max volume with moderate road noise. I was hoping the front mounted speakers on the Nuvi 800's would be an improvement. They're not! The FM transmitter meanwhile is a pain in the butt if you're moving (why else would you need a nav unit). As you move, a previously clear FM channel may become occupied resulting in constant fiddling with the radio and Nuvi.

Voice Recognition - it's a great concept and the 850 does pretty well but you need a very quiet environment. Doesn't sound like a moving car does it? Even in the house, with a TV at low volume 15 feet away, the unit becomes confused about what it's "hearing". Mute the TV, and tell the kids to shut up and it really does a pretty good job. Entering addresses via voice is just so much better than tedious typing. My opinion of the professional reviewers who rave about the Nuvi 800's voice recognition has slipped quite a few notches. It ain't that great.

Garmin Features - the "Where Am I" and "Where's My Car" features are great ideas and well implemented. But again, both of these are available on the much cheaper 700 series of Nuvi's.

Battery - the 800 series has the first user replaceable battery on a Nuvi. For about $30 you can carry a spare. Nice.

So, is limited voice recognition and a replaceable battery worth the $300 premium over a 700 series Nuvi? Only you can answer that. Although very disappointed with the voice recognition accuracy and low volume, I'm keeping my Nuvi 850. The voice recognition still saves me from typing and a spare battery means I don't have to carry a power cord for most trips. I'll just enter my destination using voice comands in the office, hotel, restaurant, or at home before I head out. The VR remote can live in my briefcase. Less clutter for the cabin....more info
  • Fair- Good
Good overall but missing several needed functions. If you are used to a top line Magellan and it's features you may not be happy with this one....more info
  • Do not buy!
Having been pleased with my Garmin Street Pilot 2720, I looked forward to the Garmin nuvi 880, with hands-free telephone, FM connection, and more. 1)It responds inconsistently to my loud voice commands, 2)the person I call can hear my voice, but their voice is too soft for me to hear, 3)if I switch to having sound transmitted through my radio, I can hear their voice but this replaces my radio transmission, and 4)I could go on with how unsatisfactory it is in all of the "advances" in this new instrument. Talking to Garmin was a total waste of time and zero help. I am seriously thinking of returning it to the dealer, but just haven't gotten around to it....more info
  • Garmin Nuvi 880
I started with the Garmin IQ3600 then got a Nuvie 680 (this is a great GPS) and now I have the Nuvi 880. I bought it because of the voice activate control. When it works it is great. However, it is not as great as I had hoped. Rain, wind, radio, traffic noise will make it almost useless. I have yelled and screamed many time at the device only to be ignored. If you are parked or it is quit then it works very well. The Nuvi 880 is a great GPS even without the voice activation. The features over the 680 made it worth the update cost....more info
  • Garmin 880
Although I already own a model 360, the speech function was something I was interested in. We travel considerably, and there is no distraction with this functionality. I would recommend to anyone....more info
  • Excellent!!!!
Xmas gift for wife, she loves it!!!! Easy to use, works well. She'll never be lost again. Thanks Garmin!!!!...more info
I never really thought about buying a GPS for my car. Most of my experience with these have been in rental cars. Those were Magellan systems and they were awsome I thought in strange towns.

At the time of purchasing this Garmin unit, I was in yet another strange town and my rental car didn't have the option. So I shopped around local places and online. This GPS is almost awsome! Why "almost" you ask? Well the only complaint I have is that there are a couple of game features on it but they are trial versions. Suprised to find the classic Missle Command game installed I couldn't resist to play it for a bit. It is a great version of the game until you find out it's a trial version then it stops and says you got to buy the full version...COME ON! for the price these stupid little games should be free - don't you think? This is the only reason I gave it 4 stars.

Well about the GPS - You will not be disappointed with the ease of use, clairity of the touch screen and the blue tooth function works pretty good. It updates itself and is pretty accurate if you get that option. The windshield mounting system works very well. It even adjusts brightness automatically for day or night use. It is funny, now I seem to use it in my home town cause it is fun seeing what routes it selects compared to my chosen path. ...more info
  • Awesome!
The Garmin nuvi 880 is excellent. The portability of this item makes it nicer than one built into a vehicle. One of our vehicles has a built in model; this is a better, more up to date unit and can travel with us when we are walking and touring around town. Amazon offered speedy delivery and a fair price. Other suppliers said they could sell it cheaper; the only problem was they didn't have it in stock. I had delivery of the item in 2 days and it was traveling across country in another two. The detour feature saved me many hours of sitting, stopped in traffic and had me traveling a beautiful, scenic route across Ohio. To add to the scenery, I lost no travel time. The blu-tooth feature worked, but the clarity of voice on the other end was not good. I would highly recommend the Garmin nuvi 880 unit to anyone looking for a top of the line unit. ...more info
  • Nuvi 880
Product is more than what I need. The Garmins are user friendly, but this model has too many features to make it practical....more info
  • Garmen 880 Nuvi GPS
I received my Garmin Nuvi 880 just before heading up North to Maine for a Vacation. It arrived early. The "extra" charger that I thought I might need did not fit the product which requires a special charger to get MSN so be careful---not the sellers fault--I thought maybe the seller would short change the order and leave out critical parts whcih was not the case. The unit came complete with special charger, mounts and instructions.

I love the unit but most of all having dealt with Garmin in the past, I know they they are very customer oriented and was shown that agin on a question regarding the remote which they sent out a backup just in case. I had had a Tom Tom just prior and their customer service was terrible.

Very satisfied with the product just concerned that right after I bought it it became "obsolete" and they stopped making that model even though consumers gave it the highest grade....more info
I bought the Garmin Nuvi 880 directly from and was the seller. I just now got off of the telephone with Garmin and they told me the Nuvi880 was REGISTERED TO SOMEONE ELSE. As I write this the Garmin Representative is finding out the serial number and who it is registered to in order to TRY AND GIVE ME A WARRANTY. I would like for to respond because I now see where the NUVI is offered by another. I feel that Amazon has my registration number so just be careful to ask this question when purchasing from Amazon. I have never had this problem before. I paid more because was the SELLER...
The 880 is amazing, shows highway speed limits and your speed and even shows where the security cameras are , we don't speed but it is interesting to watch the unit and it is very accurate with voice command and it will answer your cell phone for you while driving......more info
