Beautiful, Stunning Design
Designed by internationally acclaimed designer Neil Poulton, the Hard Disk features sleek and sophisticated styling. The case is entirely black with a fashionable, mirror-polished finish. A cool, blue LED strip on the bottom casts an ambient glow. The ultra-minimalist look will blend perfectly into home entertainment setups and workstations.

But don't think the design is just about looking good. Built to optimize heat dissipation so that it can operate without a fan, the drive is also designed for convenience and portability. At just 4.6 x 1.8 x 7.6 inches (WxHxD) and weighing barely two pounds, it can be easily transported into your briefcase, allowing you to shuttle files between your home and office, or move your work between your laptop and desktop with ease.

More Space for More Media
With an additional 500 GB of disk space, the Hard Disk can store up to 2 million photos, 9,250 hours of music, or 750 hours of video. Instead of having all this data stored on an internal drive on your desktop computer that can't be moved around, imagine being able to carry your entire digital media collection with you on your travels. You can also use the drive to back up your computer files for extra security.

Fast Performance and Exceptional Compatibility
Using the universal and fast USB 2.0 interface, which offers a transfer rate of up to 480 Mbps, this drive will work with both Macs and PCs. Just plug it in and play it. The drive is pre-formatted for use across Windows and Macs, doesn't require any additional drivers, and is ready to go seconds after being removed from the box. The drive features a rotational speed of 7200 RPM and has a cache of at least 8 MB, providing performance that won't keep you waiting for your files to backup or your media to play.

A compact, fanless design allows for quiet operation. View larger.
The drive is compatible with Windows 2000, XP, and Vista, as well as Mac OS 10.3 or higher. Included in the box is LaCie's 1-Click Backup Software (Windows and Mac), as well as LaCie SilverKeeper Backup Software (Mac) making backups an easy and painless process.

Free One-Year Unlimited Backup Service
With the purchase of this LaCie Hard Disk, you will also receive a full year of LaCie's Online Backup service. With this service, the data that you store on your computer will be encrypted twice and uploaded to the offsite data center where they will remain encrypted, maintaining your privacy.

When you sign up for the service, software is added to your computer that looks for new and changed files to update. The service is completely automated and only backs up new and modified files when your computer is idle, so you don't have to do a thing, and your computer's performance will never be affected.

This service lets you upload an unlimited amount of photos, music, video, and documents for a full year. After that you can continue with the service for a low monthly fee. This is LaCie's way of ensuring that should anything happen to your Hard Disk -- should it get stolen or damaged, for instance -- your invaluable data will remain completely protected and accessible.

The LaCie 500 GB USB 2.0 Hard Disk, Design by Neil Poulton is backed by a 2-year limited warranty.

Customer Reviews:

  • Lacie won't replace new DOA unit, repair only.
Bought three of these Neil Poulton drives at the start of the month, and one was DOA. Contacted Lacie at the start of the month and I am only now (finally) getting an RMA. Turns out Lacie will not replace my brand new, DOA drive with a new one, they will only "repair" it. I don't have any confidence in any repair work Lacie will do on the drive (which is a Hitachi). Support takes up to three days to answer any emails/queries. This nightmare has gone on now for almost 20 days. At this point I would much rather throw the drive in the trash and forget about it.

Looked at other brands, and they have the same high failure rate, so its a lose/lose no matter which hard drive you purchase, but these drives only have a two year warranty....more info

This hard drive is very economical for the capacity. It arrived quickly and my son hooked it to his Mac and was up and running in no time. If it works as well as the last one. It should serve him well....more info

  • Gadget Guy Reviews
Well I am on my second Ext. HD and this one seems to be more consistent and does not get HOT like the Seagate 500GB I own they are mailing me a second REFURBISHED out. This has a fan and is SMALLER and is more nicer looking PLUS is a 750GB USB. Seagate is a SPACE HOG gets REAL HOT and will fry in six months. PS splurge and get the one that has more ports than just USB the transfer time is a TAD slow....more info
  • Review of the LaCie Hard Disk Drive
This product has been very efficient, would suggest to others that is a great buy. Very easy set-up and attractive design. My only issue is that when you safely remove hard drive the power still stays on, besides that the hard drive works wonders....more info
  • Great utility!
Very good product. I especially like the ability to reserve a certain amount of space for Mac compatibility. The device works smoothly and very quickly and looks very sleek and fashionable. ...more info
  • Good values
There is nothing special or unique about "design by Neil Poulton" and it is not that quiet despite no fan operation. Still, a good buy afterall....more info
  • it works!
    Works good.
The only thing I would change, is to make them come pre-formated as FAT32.
So it can be used on both PC and MAC.
Because it formats by itself, depending what computer you plug this HD in.

  • Great drive / 1 YEAR (Carbonite) Backup DOA on Vista x64
I purchased the LaCie drive over others because of the 1 YEAR UNLIMITED backup. This drive looks great, runs quiet and was a breeze to install on my 3 year old XP Media Center PC. With the software, drive and service it's a great bundle - in theory...

A month after installation, this drive saved me when my old PC started to fail. I was able to boot from a BARTPE CD and move everything to the LaCie before sending it for service (where the drive was wiped). As a USB drive, the LaCie 1TB does the job!

However, the software leaves much to be desired. I replaced the PC with a new Dell XPS430 / Vista x64 only to find the LaCie branded 1 YEAR UNLIMITED backup (Carbonite) won't successfully install. While troubleshooting the Carbonite issue (with Carbonite not LaCie), they cancelled my 1 YEAR UNLIMITED service due to inactivity between my PC and their server.
I was then informed I didn't have a 1 YEAR UNLIMITED backup, but merely a trial and according to their rules if I didn't use it for a month, it was cancelled and I couldn't get it back. No resolution yet, but it's evident the LaCie/Carbonite relationship isn't well oiled and LaCie's marketing of a 1 YEAR UNLIMITED online backup isn't viewed the same way by Carbonite....more info
  • Great Buy!
I love this product! It reads and writes fast enough that I didn't have to get the Firewire version. The sleek design and color matches the rest of my gaming rig while adding the memory that I needed. It's universal plug and play feature allows me to bring a wealth of information and files where ever i need them without fear non-compatibility issues....more info

Not much to say it works so far reliable works 24/7 for close to 3 months with no problems. Blue light can be a pain if you are using it in a home theater setting. However small piece black electrical tape problem solved.Runs fairly quiet matches nicely with black Dish HD sat receiver. ...more info

  • Great product, the third one I buy
This hard drive works great. Makes no noise and it is very reliable. I own another from a different brand and that one gave me problems. I trust Lacie....more info
  • So far, so good - works well.
I purchased this as a USB External Hard Drive for my Digital Video Recorder (Moxi - Charter) and was concerned as to whether it had a sleep mode that would render it unusable for the DVR. I haven't encountered any sleep mode and it is going strong now after 2 months.

My main concern now is longevity. I had a 500GB Fantom drive in the same spot and it didn't last a year. I am hoping this drive will last a couple of years or so. I contacted LaCie about it and they would not assure me that it would work for this purpose, but so far it is working fine.

It looks fine, and has a blue light that blinks when data is transferring - which is actually a nice thing to let you know when the DVR is recording. If you didn't like the light, a small piece of black electrical tape would hide it unnoticeably.

It is very quiet and I do not hear it running at all.

So far I am very pleased with this external hard drive....more info
  • Handsome and Possibly Evil
This drive works about as well as every other powered USB drive I've had. The big selling point is the design. It's very awesome looking.

My only problem is that it kinda reminds me of something you might see on a Cylon base ship. And that makes me sad because Battlestar Galactica is gone forever!...more info
  • Not a good Lacie experience
This drive failed within a few weeks of owning it. My inexpensive media storage immediately jumped by $80 when I had to by data recovery software for a bunch of iTunes movies. (I know can't blame LaCie for not backing up my data, but I can be annoyed that it failed.) Then I had to spend 45 minutes waiting for an agent to get a return authorization, another few minutes making a special trip to the post office to ship it back (and I paid for the shipping, natch) and the topper was that Lacie returned it via FedEx and required an in-person signature. Since I'm not at home during the day (who is?), I had to spend another 45 minutes making a special trip the FedEx distro center.

All told, this was a big pain. I don't plan on buying Lacie products again....more info
  • GREAT VALUE, not so great transfer speed
Quiet operation, effective cooling fan and great value for amount of storage provided but transfer speeds not spectacular......more info
  • Great HardDrive!
It works well and is very fast. It also looks really cool. I've been running it for 2 weeks now w/o any problems. ...more info
  • LaCie Hard Drive
Plenty of space, sleek design, easy to use. I would definitely recommend this to a friend!...more info
  • Great Product
I have almost no problems with the LaCie Hard Disk. It is very reliable and never crashes. it is also very stylish. However, it did fail to backup some fails at times. But when i press retry, it works again. It is not very loud but you do hear a low hum sound. Oh, and i have a mac, and Time Machine with this product is a snap, but it did take a few hours to back up all my files. ~210 GB....more info
  • One good looking HD if you're into that.
Lacie makes the best looking drives. Its the apple of HD enclosers, you pay a little bit extra, but if its out in the open I think its worth it....more info
  • Functional Drive with nice simplistic design.
I bought this to serve as a place to store my system partition images. It came with a setup utility on the drive that allows you to format the entire drive for Windows or split the drive into 2 partitions, one for Mac and the other for Windows.

I selected the USB version. For about $20 more at the time of this review, you can get the same size Lacie drive that is SATA compatable.
The external SATA drive would give you up to 3 times faster transfer rate, but you would then need a SATA PCI controller card in order to plug in the external SATA cable. These cards currently go for $20 to $30. Since I use my drive mainly for image backups, I opted for the USB only version. When I reimage a drive, it typically takes 30 to 50 minutes and I just do something else during that time. ...more info
