Beautiful, Stunning Design
Designed by internationally acclaimed designer Neil Poulton, the Hard Disk features sleek and sophisticated styling. The case is entirely black with a fashionable, mirror-polished finish. A cool, blue LED strip on the bottom casts an ambient glow. The ultra-minimalist look will blend perfectly into home entertainment setups and workstations.

But don't think the design is just about looking good. Built to optimize heat dissipation so that it can operate without a fan, the drive is also designed for convenience and portability. At just 4.6 x 1.8 x 7.6 inches (WxHxD) and weighing barely two pounds, it can be easily transported into your briefcase, allowing you to shuttle files between your home and office, or move your work between your laptop and desktop with ease.

More Space for More Media
With an additional 1 TB of disk space, the Hard Disk can store up to 70 hours of DV video or 270,000 or over 1 million photos. Instead of having all this data stored on an internal drive on your desktop computer that can't be moved around, imagine being able to carry your entire digital media collection with you on your travels. You can also use the drive to back up your computer files for extra security.

Fast Performance and Exceptional Compatibility
Using the universal and fast USB 2.0 interface, which offers a transfer rate of up to 480 Mbps, this drive will work with both Macs and PCs. Just plug it in and play it. The drive is pre-formatted for use across Windows and Macs, doesn't require any additional drivers, and is ready to go seconds after being removed from the box. The drive features a rotational speed of 7200 RPM and has a cache of at least 8 MB, providing performance that won't keep you waiting for your files to backup or your media to play.

A compact, fanless design allows for quiet operation. View larger.
The drive is compatible with Windows 2000, XP, and Vista, as well as Mac OS 10.3 or higher. Included in the box is LaCie's 1-Click Backup Software (Windows and Mac), as well as LaCie SilverKeeper Backup Software (Mac) making backups an easy and painless process.

Free One-Year Unlimited Backup Service
With the purchase of this LaCie Hard Disk, you will also receive a full year of LaCie's Online Backup service. With this service, the data that you store on your computer will be encrypted twice and uploaded to the offsite data center where they will remain encrypted, maintaining your privacy.

When you sign up for the service, software is added to your computer that looks for new and changed files to update. The service is completely automated and only backs up new and modified files when your computer is idle, so you don't have to do a thing, and your computer's performance will never be affected.

This service lets you upload an unlimited amount of photos, music, video, and documents for a full year. After that you can continue with the service for a low monthly fee. This is LaCie's way of ensuring that should anything happen to your Hard Disk -- should it get stolen or damaged, for instance -- your invaluable data will remain completely protected and accessible.

The LaCie 500 GB USB 2.0 Hard Disk, Design by Neil Poulton is backed by a 2-year limited warranty.

Customer Reviews:

  • Works for me...
    Plug-and-play makes installation a breeze
    Aesthetics are very pleasing
    Noise is minimal
    USB cord is pretty short
    Somewhat slow transfer rate
    Heats up quickly

Overall I am pleased with this hard drive and would recommend it to other average computer users....more info
  • it works!
    Works good.
The only thing I would change, is to make them come pre-formated as FAT32.
So it can be used on both PC and MAC.
Because it formats by itself, depending what computer you plug this HD in.

  • Works great!
So easy to set up and love that the software was on the hard disk. Got a great deal on this. Thanks Amazon. ...more info
  • Not bad, for the price...
I couldn't ask for much more, given the price, but I've just had one problem with the hard drive: Occasionally when waking up from sleep mode (Apple G5 1.8ghz single processor running OS 10.5.6) the drive doesn't re-mount fast enough, so I get the warning message saying the drive was improperly disconnected. This happens maybe 5% of the time. No damage or data loss yet -- that I know of. I haven't been able to find out why this happens, or how to fix it....more info
  • Fine product.
This LaCie Hard Drive is available in a firewire version. If possible go for firewire. No problems with this device. Give it a A+....more info
  • Great drive / 1 YEAR (Carbonite) Backup DOA on Vista x64
I purchased the LaCie drive over others because of the 1 YEAR UNLIMITED backup. This drive looks great, runs quiet and was a breeze to install on my 3 year old XP Media Center PC. With the software, drive and service it's a great bundle - in theory...

A month after installation, this drive saved me when my old PC started to fail. I was able to boot from a BARTPE CD and move everything to the LaCie before sending it for service (where the drive was wiped). As a USB drive, the LaCie 1TB does the job!

However, the software leaves much to be desired. I replaced the PC with a new Dell XPS430 / Vista x64 only to find the LaCie branded 1 YEAR UNLIMITED backup (Carbonite) won't successfully install. While troubleshooting the Carbonite issue (with Carbonite not LaCie), they cancelled my 1 YEAR UNLIMITED service due to inactivity between my PC and their server.
I was then informed I didn't have a 1 YEAR UNLIMITED backup, but merely a trial and according to their rules if I didn't use it for a month, it was cancelled and I couldn't get it back. No resolution yet, but it's evident the LaCie/Carbonite relationship isn't well oiled and LaCie's marketing of a 1 YEAR UNLIMITED online backup isn't viewed the same way by Carbonite....more info
  • Extreme Ease
Unboxed, hooked up to an intel Imac setup took less than a minute, worked flawless and has run now using Bootcamp for the past month not a single hickup. Awesome product, looks great! My stainless steel desk looks even better now!...more info
  • Beautiful and Functional!
I purchased this hard drive based on the reviews I saw on Amazon and from some of the other Mac sites. I'm a Mac user and needed a large external hard drive for my iTunes store for Apple TV. This took care of my challenge nicely. The design of the drive enclosure is spectacular, I can't say it any other way. LaCie and Neil Poulton did a fantastic job at a very clean yet dramatic design while making it very functional.

Obviously since I'm using a Mac, it was just a matter of plugging it in, launching Mac's Disk Utility and setting up the drive the way I wanted it. I was up and operational in about 15 minutes from the package. Its been in service now for 3 weeks running 24/7 with no issues. The nice thing is its so nice looking, I keep it out in the open so there's good air-flow....more info
  • Byte it
I needed lots more storage space, so I thought I'd try the world of terabyte drives. This one was priced right and seemed to offer all I needed.
As usual the actual usable space is much less than 1 TB, but I expected that. I have a fairly old Vaio PC running XP pro sp3 and it will not boot up when this drive is plugged in (USB2) and powered on, so I make sure it's off when I turn on the PC. Once on, I have to reset sharing protocols on it every time I want to use it on my home network.
Those are my only criticisms. The drive works fine, is quiet, and is unobtrusive in my workspace....more info
  • Lacie won't replace new DOA unit, repair only.
Bought three of these Neil Poulton drives at the start of the month, and one was DOA. Contacted Lacie at the start of the month and I am only now (finally) getting an RMA. Turns out Lacie will not replace my brand new, DOA drive with a new one, they will only "repair" it. I don't have any confidence in any repair work Lacie will do on the drive (which is a Hitachi). Support takes up to three days to answer any emails/queries. This nightmare has gone on now for almost 20 days. At this point I would much rather throw the drive in the trash and forget about it.

Looked at other brands, and they have the same high failure rate, so its a lose/lose no matter which hard drive you purchase, but these drives only have a two year warranty....more info
  • Good values
There is nothing special or unique about "design by Neil Poulton" and it is not that quiet despite no fan operation. Still, a good buy afterall....more info
  • Too Noisy!
Although I love the minimalistic design and the cute blue light, this hard disk is much noisier than the 1TB WD MyBook HD I have borrowed from a friend of mine.

I'm an iMac user, and one big reason why I love iMacs is that they don't make any noise. I was mad at the Western Digital HD because of the humming noise it added to the environment, but it wasn't until I got this LaCie that I realized how silent my work environment has been so far! The WD hard disk is noiseless compared to this one! The fan produces a constant humming sound which drives me crazy, to the point that I had to configure my Mac to turn it off automatically, regardless of the fact that this will affect the hard disk's life span. I'll probably only use this for backups so that it stays off most of the time.

If you got a noisy computer or work in a noisy environment and are merely looking for good design, go for it. But if you are really sensitive to noise, you definitely have better options in the market.

  • Take a Chance
You may get a good HD, or not. The Christmas present was DOA. A few moments with a tester indicated that the power supply was not working. (A problem entioned in other Amazon reviews for this 1tb drive.) Christmas Day, Thursday; did the Amazon paperwork for an exchange which arrived Monday. New HD powered up, initialized and is happily storing LOTS of files. Zero star for the DOA power supply. Five stars for Amazon return. Total of three....more info

LaCie Hard Disk 750 GB USB 2.0 External Hard Drive, Design by Neil Poulton 301303U

  • LaCie 500GB USB hard drive
This hard drive works great, as advertised. I am using it to back up my Mac with Time Machine and have had no problems. The only thing that could be improved is a longer USB cable; the cable that came with the drive is only about 2 ft. long....more info

  • Great External Drive
Great drive, fast transfer rate, seems very reliable so far. Extremely quiet and with it being a black box, not showy sitting on the desk. Very happy with the product....more info
  • Handsome and Possibly Evil
This drive works about as well as every other powered USB drive I've had. The big selling point is the design. It's very awesome looking.

My only problem is that it kinda reminds me of something you might see on a Cylon base ship. And that makes me sad because Battlestar Galactica is gone forever!...more info
  • Great Product
I have almost no problems with the LaCie Hard Disk. It is very reliable and never crashes. it is also very stylish. However, it did fail to backup some fails at times. But when i press retry, it works again. It is not very loud but you do hear a low hum sound. Oh, and i have a mac, and Time Machine with this product is a snap, but it did take a few hours to back up all my files. ~210 GB....more info
  • Functional Drive with nice simplistic design.
I bought this to serve as a place to store my system partition images. It came with a setup utility on the drive that allows you to format the entire drive for Windows or split the drive into 2 partitions, one for Mac and the other for Windows.

I selected the USB version. For about $20 more at the time of this review, you can get the same size Lacie drive that is SATA compatable.
The external SATA drive would give you up to 3 times faster transfer rate, but you would then need a SATA PCI controller card in order to plug in the external SATA cable. These cards currently go for $20 to $30. Since I use my drive mainly for image backups, I opted for the USB only version. When I reimage a drive, it typically takes 30 to 50 minutes and I just do something else during that time. ...more info
  • Review of the LaCie Hard Disk Drive
This product has been very efficient, would suggest to others that is a great buy. Very easy set-up and attractive design. My only issue is that when you safely remove hard drive the power still stays on, besides that the hard drive works wonders....more info
