Customer Reviews:

  • Great Deal
As usual Western Digital Hard Drives are great. This drive lives up to the promise. Since it is in OEM configuration it must be initialized, but this is easy to accomplish with most versions of Windows....more info
  • Work as advertised
Mounted the drives and they performed as hard drives should. Good value for the money....more info
  • Bad quality and bad customer service
I purchased this model about a year ago, and it comes with 5 years manufacturer warranty. Recently I found somehting wrong with this HD and contacted with WD customer service, after several emails back and forth, I downloaded WD diagnostics utility, and got the report "too many bad sectors".

Then I was told by customer service that I need to ship the bad HD by myself and have it replaced. It is ridiculous, think about the market value of this HD around $60 to $80, but I need to pay another $20 to $30 to ship it. And who knows how long the HD will last again.

I dealt with HP/Compaq warranty regarding the defective laptop before, they basically sent out a package with postage paid already and I don't need to pay anything. A much better way to handle warranty....more info
  • Great drive for the price
I needed a replacement for a failed drive in my living room computer, and this was just the ticket. I also needed it *fast*, and since I have Prime it was a no-brainer to go with Amazon.

To me, the WD6400AKS represents the best compromise between capacity, noise, heat, and price. You can certainly find drives that are faster, quieter, cheaper, or bigger, but I found few other drives that balance all of these considerations as well as this one.

No, it's not sexy, but it gets the job done. That's what I want from a hard drive....more info
  • worked great
worked great, only thing that kept it from 5 stars was lack of mounting screws. make sure you order a sata cable if you don't have one. I am using as back up drive for now.

mounted quickly, plugged in power and sata cable and restarted computer. hit f1 to make enter setup, made sure it found drive, then saved and rebooted. once xp was back up right clicked on "my computer" then clicked "manage", clicked "disk management" on left tree, found drive in window, needs to be initialized and formated which I did by right clicking on it and clicking initialize. then clicked action up top and format to set my partitions. took about fifteen minutes to format and then it was good to go.

  • 6 year old computer, fake raid card, no problem
I have used WD hard drives in my computers for years (still have a 40GB IDE running the OS). Anyways, i got 2 of these to upgrade the storage space and it was a painless install...I chose these over others because of the 2 platters (too many hard drive crashes over the years).

Oh yeah when i looked on amazon they were sold out. went to another website and paid $10 more got one that was D.O.A. and now hoping their customer service refunds the money. Should have just let amazon back order for me. (the other web site also sent me a blue and green when i wanted two blue, I recycle to save the enviroment)....more info
  • Great price, great product
I purchased this product to replace an aging drive which was beginning to fail. Failed seek test and bad sectors was suspected of the OLD drive. Installed this drive and copied all partitions using partition magic 8.0
Removed the old drive and booted right up. No missing data.
Using the drive, I see a huge increase it productivity and storage space.
Would I by this drive again. YES in a Heart Beat....more info
  • As advertised
This seems to be a fine drive to me - 7200 RPM is appreciated with the storage size. I used this to add some additional space to my HP MediaSmart EX470 (recently bought) and for the folder duplication. The drive added no noticeable extra heat, except during drive balancing, when the heat nearly doubles. Very quiet.

Some other posters have indicated a need for "initialization." Perhaps this means formatting? Not sure, but this is something easily done in Windows. As for the MSS EX470, the new drive was recognized immediately and formatted in less than 15 minutes. I was expecting a much larger amount of time.

Only had the drive a few days now, but will report any future troubles. Perfect drive to replace a failing drive or to add storage to existing systems. Honestly, I'd even buy it and a separate SATA cord for less than the retail package......more info
  • Getting a refurb
The PC showed up in about 5 days and the monitor about 3 days after that. Both worked just fine out of the box. Wish the video card had a DVI outlet. Will have to buy such a card, and then see if I need to buy a bigger power supply. Just be aware of those types of limitations when buying a refurbished PC....more info
  • Good Product
The harddisk went through inspection with no errors. It works great no problem with it.Great product....more info
  • cheap, fast, and runs cool
This hard drive is a great buy, also WD 1 TB drives get good reviews too from my friend.

It also runs 2 degrees C cooler than my seagate drive, which means it must be more energy efficient and reliable....more info
  • Good Hard Drive
The Western Digital Hard Drive works great for backing up, using different OS's can't have enough drive space and works with BlackX ....just put in and take it out and if needed another put another one in.

And Thanx, to Amazon which makes it so easy to buy and has so many selections of {{EveryThing}} from the confront of home.....thumbs up Amazon. ...more info
  • Click of death
I got this Western Digital drive a couple of years ago. The drive worked okay for about a month, then the SMART info became garbled. I RMA'd the drive and got a replacement. All has been good until a couple of days ago, when it started exhibiting the click of death. 450gb of files gone forever. I am glad for the people who are having a good experience with this drive, but be afraid, very afraid and back up your data.

My 500gb Samsung, also purchased about the same time is still going strong. Unfortunately, it was not in a RAID configuration. I have never had a Samsung fail, so I think I will stick with them from now on. They seem to be more reliable, because they don't go for the cutting edge which this drive was at the time I purchased it....more info
  • Killer price
I have 3 of these drive, one for each computer in the house. Absolutely flawless performance!...more info
  • OEM - not aftermarket product
This product is perfect if you are replacing a drive. However, if it is a new drive or an additional drive, be sure to order the connecting cable to go along with it. Either way, my desktop is back up and running better than it has in 2 years now....more info
  • Terrific hard drive
This hard drive is very fast and was easy to install, partition and format. Works great. Very good price....more info
  • DSAA (Dead Shortly After Arrival
Plugged it in to my NAS drive setup for a RAID 1 configuration. It started working then quickly died....more info
  • So Far So Good...
PRO: Received earlier than expected. Worked first time I plugged it in. Still workes great.

    CONS: None.

  • Fast Drive at a Great Price
I am a personal fan of Western Digital drives and this one doesn't disappoint.

The drive is very fast and very quiet. It worked perfectly with its twin in a RAID configuration. The price was great. Unless you absolutely need more storage this is a great drive to get.

Just be aware that this is just a bare drive, you get no cables, no mounting screws, nothing except the drive itself....more info
  • Good Value
Drive performs very well and runs quiet. The WD website has good helps for installation and configuration. Buy a SATA drive cable or make sure you have an extra one already....more info
  • WD6400AAKS
Connected drive to spare SATA Port, booted up, went into control panel, disk management to setup drive. The drive came up with no problems. Used Acronis True Image to Do a Clone Disk from my old C: drive to the WD drive.
I then removed old drive and booted up. It did ask to Activate Windows Vista Again but one click and it was done. Runs much faster than my old Maxtor 250 drive and very quit. I can't hear it running over the fans. I have to look at the drive light to see if it is running. A good price for 640 GB drive. I plan to buy a 2nd one later on.

  • WD 640GB,7200 rpm,sata. Very good product!
This hard disk is an excellent buy, price is so reasonable for the quality and capacity of it.I have had several Western Digital hard disks over the years and never had the slightest failure with any of them.Very satisfied with it and highly recomended!...more info
  • Works as advertised.
My old drive crashed with a virus and I didn't have a very current back up:(

Don't make my mistake, keep you're data backup up!

I bought this one to use while I retrieved my old data off old drive.

This disk comes with no sata cord or instructions. But GREAT price.
I plugged it in and let it format the drive over night.

I couldn't believe how cheap it was. It is a little louder than my old drive, but it's 10 TIMES the storage.

I was a little shocked at how bad the failure rate seems to be on hard drives, especialy external drives. Maybe people only complain and don't compliment. I've only had this drive for a month or so. I hope it lasts!...more info

  • Great Hard disk
I bought this to deposit video on after recording it from a TV tuner. It was used as an internal SATA drive, and I filled it up at one point. It withstood numerous recordings and then renderings as I edited out commercials and created my personal collection. It is now in an external case and connected to my laptop via USB 2.0 and still works fine. We play videos off of it through the network. I will say that when I got it, it had trouble initializing, but the included software solved that problem. It has worked wonderfully since then under what I would consider to be pretty rigorous use....more info
  • Probably the Current Optimal Drive
I just ordered my third WD6400 over the last 6 months. This drive seems to be the current optimal design: only two platters (2 X 320G), very quiet operation, and very good cost/capacity ratio. Larger drives have more platters (more noise, less reliability?), and seem to have more problems.

Personally, my main goal for a drive is low noise, second is reliability, and third is low cost/capacity ratio. Seagate was the low-noise winner with their 80GB Barracuda drives a few years ago, so I stayed with Seagate drives longer than I should have. Their later drives became noisier; I find recent Seagate noise levels unacceptable. Each drive or series needs to be evaluated on it's own; continuing to favor a company after they start degrading quality is a mistake....more info
  • good standard hard drive
I use this in a RAID configuration with the original hard drive that came with the computer, without problem....more info
  • Awesome Drives
Bought 2 of these drive and put them in a Linksys NAS200. They have been working now for over a week and seems to be running great so far. For the money these drives are well worth the money....more info
  • Quiet Drive
Very Quiet Drive. Doesn't run hot. averaging temps at 31-33 C.

I am using it as part of a 3 drive RAID. Too soon to tell about long term stability obviously....more info
  • This drive does what it should
I have always had a grudge against WD. My first computer had a WD drive that dies 2 months after the 1 year warranty and they refused to even offer a discount for a new one. Well, about 2 years ago I tried them for an "enterprise version" hard drive with a 5 year warranty. It has handled my music server just fine. This drive is for a backing up the system and so far so good. It does what it should and without much noise. If both keep working beyond their warranty dates I will be very happy with WD....more info
  • simple and rapid HDD
there is not much to say about this product, unless its high quality, good brand dendimiento large and attached to this disk.
compared with their counterparts WD has never wrong to talk about with regard to their products, and this is no different.
over the Maxtor 7200.11 (which are a disgrace) I choose this because it is the green edition Blanck or more for fans of extreme speed....more info
