More about PVR Technology
PVR stands for PC Video Recorder. The WinTV-HVR-950 is a PVR that allows you to play television through your computer and record the broadcasts digitally. PVR doesn't use standard videocassettes; instead, it uses your computer's hard disk to store the broadcasts.

Once you record a television show to your PC's hard drive, you can burn a CD or DVD that will allow you to play the show back on another computer or on your television. With video editing software (not included with the WinTV-HVR-950), you can even edit the shows. This is a great feature if you want to save clips from movies or sitcoms, or keep your favorite player's grand slam or TD kick-off return for posterity.

And just like a typical VCR, the WinTV-HVR-950 offers you several recording options, depending on your play back needs. If you want the highest quality recording for playback through your HDTV, all you need is enough hard drive space to support high-quality recording. By using the lowest recording option, you can use your WinTV-HVR-950, along with an inexpensive video camera, as a low-cost on-site video surveillance system. In fact, the possibilities of how you can take advantage of the WinTV-HVR-950 are endless.

Customer Reviews:

  • More than just a TV Tuner
Not only does this let me watch TV on my mac, but it also lets me hook up a composite input, so I can play old school video games through my computer monitor! There's a yellow-white-red to mini USB dongle that comes with the TV Tuner that's pretty awesome. It does more than my old PCI-card tuner, plus it's portable.

And since it's windows AND mac compatible, it's even more awesome. This was the best deal i could find for something like that.

The program that comes with it (meant for Macs) does a pretty good job. interface could be a little more fluid, but it covers all the bases. Those with windows will probably be satisfied using Windows Media Center....more info
  • Good "alternative" to Elgato eyeTV hybrid; some software quirks
This is the same product as the Elgato eyeTV Hybrid, so it's a good choice if you want to save a few dollars over that brand. It includes Elgato's eyeTV Lite software, which is just fine for live viewing and simple recording; if you decide you want more advanced scheduling, there's a reduced-price upgrade to the full version of the software. The eyeTV software is a little quirky, though; it wants an administrator password more often than it seems it should, and updates / upgrades aren't always as smooth as they could be. Still, these are just minor annoyances.

Performance has been just fine on a dual-processor Power Mac G5....more info
  • Low quality, charged a mint for "restocking fee".
The thing worked fine for me, although the quality was much less than i expected. It was okay if you are simply watching TV on your laptop in a small window, but I actually recorded the video to my hard-drive and burned them to a DVD, and although it played in the DVD player, the quality was terrible. This is an okay item if you only plan to watch TV on your computer.

What I AM mad about is the ridiculous $17 "restocking fee" Amazon charged me! I mean, this TV stick is the size of a large thumb drive, and I simply and neatly put it back in the box and mailed it back, so I find this charge a little ridiculous, and will probably never buy from Amazon again if I get charged like this to send something back....more info
  • Quality Video
I bought this since it would work with both Mac/PC. I have been using it on my MacBook Pro, and the video quality is exceptional, and the reception is better than you would expect for a dinky little antenna. The video recording and tv listings are integrated well. It may cost more than the PC only ones but it is a quality tuner. Keep in mind that although it is HD and has a coaxial cable input, it probably won't do HD cable directly, it would need to go through your set-top box and be input as analog. But the quality would still be better than you need....more info
  • Did not work for me
I have Time Warner Digital Cable and do not use a Cable Box. I have the coax going straight to my TV. I disconnected the cable from my TV and connected it to the USB stick, then the USB stick to the computer after loading the Eye TV Light software and following the steps. It would not get 1 channel. Not sure what the reason is behind it but you can't put your cable directly into the computer with this device. You have to use a cable box and change the channels with the cable box remote. Silly.
It's easy to blame the cable company but I think they are the ones who prevent you from doing things the easy way. Why would I need to use a cable box to watch TV on my computer? My TV doesn't need one. By the way, I am using a Mac Pro (Early 2009) and 10.5.6. I returned the TV stick....more info

  • Shows lines on screen if not digital signal.
I got this for Christmas for use with my MacBook [2GHz Core 2 Duo w/ 2GB RAM]. I do have Leopard (factory) installed. I am using the included EyeTV Lite software. I do have a fair knowledge of computers and trouble shooting, so the problem is more then just an improperly installed device/software.

The device comes with a small antenna to pick up digital broadcasts, which is able to catch the local stations nicely. When I use it in this manner (watching broadcast digital TV) there are no problems, beautiful picture that stays good for the duration of use. But the device also connects to your analog cable (coaxial) and composite (through a USB device included), and allows you to watch TV. This is where I have a problem. I have been in touch with both Hauppage and Elgato (EyeTV) in an attempt to remedy the problem, later on their responses.

The problem is if I am not using a mouse, or let my mouse idle for 5-10 seconds I get lines on the display. I had hoped that this was just a minor issue and that when I recorded the lines would not appear. I was wrong. The lines are reasonably thin, but are many, and appear to be the TV image shifted 30-50% to the side. If I wiggle the mouse, the lines disappear, but if I have no mouse connected the lines do not disappear at all. I have updated the Elgato software to it's current version (1.1) but without any effect.

Since the problem only shows when I let my mouse idle, it seems likely to be a software issue. I sent messages to both Hauppage and Elgato as previously stated, received from both an automated response to show that they had gotten the message. Neither company associated with this product was overly helpful. Hauppage responded in a few days saying they had not heard of this before, but that it sounded like a software issue and directed me to Elgato. From what I can tell, I agree; though could simply be blaming the other guy. I sent Elgato my plea for help over a week ago, and have yet to receive anything other then the automated reply. Poor service indeed. ...more info

  • Great HD TV on my Mac & Laptop PC
I purchased the Hauppauge WinTV-HVR 950 Hybrid TV Stick because I wanted a device that worked on both a Mac and A PC. Wow the quality in HDTV is fantastic. The product installed easily and works flawless. Great portable device for travel or at a wireless connection point. I highly recommend this product. Some of the reviews were negative regarding the quality of the picture, so I was a little nervous about taking the plunge. My guess is the negative reviews were caused by improper installation, inadequate hardware or older versions of the software. The software used on the Mac is superior to the PC software for ease of use and for setting preferences. I definitely would purchase again and highly recommend the product....more info
  • Pretty good.
I believe this is the same device as the one sold by El Gato, but half the price. It comes with a connector to hook to an external display like a TV and an external antenna for receiving over the air content. Reception from the included antenna is just average, but this is expected because I live amongst tall buildings where I normally get poor reception. But of the channels I can receive, picture quality is great....more info
