About Recumbent Exercise Bikes
Despite the competition from trendy new fitness inventions, exercise bikes continue to be popular options for home exercise. They offer the same aerobic benefits of riding a bicycle at any time, in any weather, without leaving the comfort and safety of home. Exercise bikes don't take up much space, require little or no balance or coordination, and can provide an effective workout for all levels of users, from beginners to serious competitors. While the same could be said for a number of other types of home fitness equipment, the exercise bike is one of the few that allows you to watch television or read a magazine while you work out.

The term recumbent literally means "lying down." Exercising in a recumbent or reclining position allows the user to have full ergonomic back support, without causing strain on the arms, neck and shoulders, all of which can be common effects of using an upright bicycle. For many people, having convenient access to quality exercise equipment is critical to sticking with a long-term exercise program.

  • Stationary recumbent exercise bike with 16 resistance levels
  • Easy-to-read instrument panel with 3-position angle adjustment
  • Extra-wide comfort seat with dual-position lumbar support 10 preset programs; handlebars with integrated heart rate grips
  • Transport wheels for easy movement; adjustable cooling fan
  • Warranty information: frame - 10 years, mechanical and elecrical - 1 year, wear items - 6 months, labor - 90 days

Customer Reviews:

  • Schwinn 231 a winner
My whole family uses and loves this exercise bike. It's super comfortable and easy to use. It was a little bit complicated to set up, but the directions were easy to follow and tools were included. This bike is pretty heavy, but the handle on the back and wheels make it easy to move it around. I will be getting an exercise mat to put it on so the carpet doesn't get messed up; you may want to order one along with the bike if you get one....more info
  • Schwinn 231
From the time of the order to the delivery was less than a week. The packaging was in good shape and upon unpacking I did not find any damaged parts. Assembly took less than 2 hours with no issues.

My wife and I have been using the bike for a month and we are extremely happy with it. It offers a good set of features and is extremely quiet. My wife, who does not enjoy exercising, finds this bike to be comfortable and easy to watch TV while riding....more info
  • SCHWINN 231
I read other reviews and choose this bike on their basis. I was not disappointed. My husband was out of town and I put the bike together myself with no difficulty. The instructions were clear and concise. I have been enjoying the bike and its presence has led me to keep up my exercising. The bike is easy to use, comfortable and quiet. The levels increase as I get better and continue to challenge me. A good choice for limited space and a cardio workout....more info
  • Four and a half
I would have given it four and a half but that is not possible. Very nice, sturdily built; it takes a while, but it is a piece of cake to put together. With the wheels in front it can be easily moved. You sit on it to try it out and get to enjoy the smoothness of the mechanism, great! Then, all of a sudden, here comes the disappointment. Some moronic 'poof' in the marketing department decided that it needed a fan. So they put the fan, a completely useless noisemaker, on top of the console. I am 6"8 and can't see my TV over it, which means that I have to cant the bike at an angle. I would put up with that if the gizmo put out some air but all it does is make noise, OK, if I hold my hand three inches from I do feel a mild movement of air. The devil is always in the details....more info
  • Schwinn 231 Best Recumbent Bike I've Ever Owned.
Pros: I have tried two other makes of recumbent bikes and I got to say that this is the best one out there especially for this price. The bike is built solid, like you'd find in a gym and if you didn't already know it's really made by Nautilus for Schwinn. The bike's magnetic resistance makes workouts completely silent, so watching a movie/tv or reading is a real joy. I find that if I lose myself in something else I'll forget I'm working out and can go a lot longer. The bike is loaded with a lot of different profiles for all different types of workouts and if you don't like any you can program your own, that feature was not available on the other two bikes I tried. The bike was not that hard to put together, just patience and following the directions and it goes together really nice.

Cons: I would like to be able to adjust the angle or tilt on the back rest, but the lumbar support makes up for that short coming. The integrated fan that is built into the 231's control panel is not really that useful, but the control unit/display it's self has a lot more functions and is easier to see than the Schwinn 230 model, so to me it was worth the little bit extra for the added features and visibility.

I was a little scared about ordering something so big and heavy through the mail, that it would arrive damaged, but I'm happy to say like most people in the reviews "it arrive in perfect condition and in only 7 days from ordering it".

I purchase the bike during February fitness month when it was $[...] dollars off plus free shipping, that was a steal, Thanks info
  • Pleased as Punch
It arrived in no time and my grandson put it together for me in about one hour. He said very easy to follow directions. He showed me how to get started (I'm nearing 69) was on it for two weeks solid and then got a bad stomach bug, so trying to get my strength back. Hope to resume my program and I have one knee replacement and that is working well. So I am very pleased so far and the variety of programs is great. I'm grateful....more info
  • Good value, well made
Had no problems with packaging and arrived within two weeks after ordering. It took around 2 hours to assemble, wasn't hard, just took time and I found no steps missing. I'm a 5'3" woman and find that the seat adjustment works fine for my leg size, I am still not at the closest setting. Very impressed with the quality and workmanship. As other's have stated, when operating it is practically soundless. I set it up in my basement and was exercising when my daughter came down, it was so quiet she didn't even notice me. Good pre-programmed options. Like the fact that memory saves the last setting so essentially I can zip through settings and start working out quickly. Haven't had to use the fan yet. The workout is noticeablly strengthening my legs and the recumbent seat causes no strain on my back. Highly recommend....more info
  • 231 +++
Items was deliverd as ordered in about 6 business days. Package and contents were is good condition. After laying out the parts and reading the instructions, assembly took about 1 hour; mechanically challenged should expect about 2 hours. Quality of the 231 is good to excellent. The chassis is sturdy and the connection points are very well designed for strength. The seat & backrest are very comfortable and seem to be well constructed. The cons are: 1) the fan is useless & 2) why have the power adapter external; it should be internal with a long power cord to the wall plug. I intend to mount power strip across the front to plug in the adapter and a floor fan to move some air. Overall the 231 is as good as some of the commercial bikes I have used at the workout center. I have used the bike for several weeks, and as it sets in front of the big screen TV, it continues to "invite" me to pedal even during the presidential debates. Considering the price I paid, I call it a "best value buy". ...more info

  • Excellent product performance
For years, my indoor exercise has been accomplished via Nordic Trac. Unfortunately, lately I have experienced a sore back after using it. That is when I decided on the Schwinn 231 after reading the earlier reviews. I purchased it from and it took roughly a week to be delivered. The box had a few small dents and holes, however, the bike was well protected inside and there was no damage to the bike.

Assembly took roughly two hours, however, it was a relativly easy job. The manual was well organized and clear and the various parts were well marked and coded with good correlation to the assembly manual.

The 231 is runs smoothly and quietly. It exudes quality. The choices of programmed workouts are great and the LCD is easy to read even in a bright room.

When my exercise routine is complete, I have definitely experienced a great workout without the unwanted side effects of back aches and pains, etc.

This is truly a great machine!...more info
  • Excellent choice
This is an excellent recumbent bike. I have used it for a few months now and have managed to lose about 12 lbs (6% of my body weight). It has a wide variety of programs and it's very easy to use. The bike is very quiet and smooth. It took a little while to assemble but all the parts are easily identified and well laid out. Just follow the instructions and you can't go wrong. It's very well constructed. ...more info
  • Great Value, Does the Job Very Well
I've used lots of recumbent bikes before, mostly the high-end commercial models from Precor and the like, so for my home bike I wanted to make sure I got one that wouldn't be a let-down from the fancy models. I considered getting a more commercial-grade bike but those were $800-$1000. So I opted for this bike and got it on sale for only $450 and I am extremely pleased with it.

I will say this bike isn't quite as sturdy as the more expensive models and the $1000 bike I use at the gym is built better and the computer parts are much better. However, don't let that stop you from getting this bike! This bike works perfectly well, and I can get just as good a workout on this as I can on the $1000 bike. And in the end, that's all that matters, right?

The bottom line is this bike is a tremendous value for only costing $450 on sale. This bike is extremely good and will not disappoint. If you want the best comfort and design, then spend $1000 on a different bike, but if you want a good bike that you can be count on to help you reach your fitness goals, then buy this one....more info
  • Excellent Bike - BAD courier
Everything about the bike (we actually got two) is fine and matching the many positive reports on this site. Assembly is easy and everything - even the tools - in the box. Bike and display are as good as the $2000 models you find in the gym.
HOWEVER: BEWARE OFF ABF, the courier! In our case, they claimed that 1. we could not be reached and 2. that we refused delivery. Despite the fact that we called them immediately when receiving an e-mail from Amazon asking us to contact them directly leading to delivery on the following day, they threaten us with storage charges.
This, to me, reeks of a systematic attempt to up their shipping charges. "We are not amused" - to say the least. I don't have a clue how people who work away from the house during the day can manage not being ripped off by their tactic... ...more info
  • Don't buy it!
I have had my Schwinn 213 for just over a year and have used it for about 40 hours in all. Unbelievably the computer in it is broken which means that you can no longer do anything with the $550 bike except sit on it and ride it at the easiest level. No settings, no timings, nothing! A new computer would cost $279 and that would be foolish - being the first one lasted only a year! Do yourself a favor AND DON'T BUY THE SCWINN!...more info
  • Schwinn 231 Recumbent Exercise Bike
Was leary to order through mail because of delivery problems I read in reviews. However, mine arrived in excellent shape and I could not be more pleased with this product. Assembly was very easy, except for two mistakes that I made by being in a hurry. I highly recommend this product. If your looking to buy one, type schwinn 231 recumbent exercise bike in your search bar. You will find an extra $100 off when it returns you to amazon for a total of two hundred dollars off price. If you order directly while searching in amazon you miss out on the additional $100....more info
  • Great Bike!
This bike was easy to assemble and works great. The multiple programs add variety and almost make exercise fun....more info
  • Some Assembly Required
Actually a lot of assembly. The good news is that the instructions are very clear, tools are provided, and the hardware is laid out with each item carefully identified.

Once you get it together and start using it you will find that the operation is very smooth and quiet. It is comfortable, easy to adjust, and very stable. It does creak a bit if you peddle at a cadence over 85 or so but you can notch up the resistance and that will slow you down.

The controls are very easy to use. It asks for a lot of information when you start to use one of the built in programs but if you use the same program over again it remembers your input so you just have to press enter unless you need to change the value.

The built in fan is a nice addition. After you get heated up from exercising you might want it to blow harder than it does.

Overall it is a very good machine and I am glad I purchased it....more info
  • Schwinn 231
I read all the reviews and in spite of reading about some having received damaged goods and difficulty with assembly, I took a chance and ordered it anyway. It arrived via AFB shipping with the box intact. My husband offered to help assemble but since I'm the mechanical one of the family I declined his offer and assembled it myself in about an hour. It was very simple. The instructions were perfect and everything works including the elusive pulse monitor that everyone else seems to have trouble with. It's a great piece of exercise equipment. When assembling just lay out all the parts, make sure everything is there, and follow the instructions. You can't go wrong....more info
  • Great bike for the money! And a cheaper option...
I did a lot of research before deciding which recumbent to buy. Originally I was going to get the Schwinn 230, but then I decided that the 231 would be worth the extra $100.

Then I found out that a local home/garden/tool department store carries a bike called the SR23 recumbent (exactly the same as this, minus the fan, available only here). I got it on sale for the same price as this 231, plus you can order it shipped to the store for free (some locations may even have it in stock).

Why did I do this? Because the #1 complaint with this product seems to be that it gets damaged in transit with home deliveries. And I also wanted to make a purchase this big some place that has an actual store front where I can go if I ever have any problems.

So if you wanted a different alternative but a comparable bike, look around. It's out there... I just can't tell you where :)....more info
  • Schwinn 231 Recumbent Exercise Bike as Advertised
I received the product in perfect condition and on time. Amazon had easily the best deal. Assembly took about 2 hrs with the tools provided and the directions were easy to understand and accurate. I read the user's guide and was comfortable with the operation in about 15 min. The bike is so quiet that I watch tv at normal volume levels while I ride. If you prefer to ride with the fan on, that will, of course, change. There are so many programs to choose from that any desires for variety can be easily satisfied. The display is big and easy to read.
I cannot at this early stage in my ownership, vouch for durability, but out of the box, I couldn't be happier. This bike appears to be a great value for the money....more info
  • Pleasantly Surprised by Positive Experience
Having read the many reviews I was concerned about ordering this item from Amazon. Would it take forever to ship? Would come in a damaged box? Would parts be missing or malfunctioning? Would putting it together be a nightmare? Would I have buyers remorse?

THE ANSWER to all of the above is NO! I placed my order on the Friday and it was shipped on the same day. The delivery people called my house on the following Monday for delivery on Tuesday. It was so fast I had to delay the delivery myself until Thursday!

Box in good condition. Everything accounted for and in working order. Took me 2.5 hours to assemble with relative ease. All tools provided.
Plugged it in and it worked. First workout this morning was great.

Pros = Super quiet. Very stable. Book rack is functional.

Neutral = Fan seems useless at first, but it does create a faint breeze that I find I am actually using. While I do not notice the "funky smell" that some have complained about, my wife's sensitive nose has picked up on the distinct order put out by the bike.

Cons = No way to keep track of total miles biked. Having to use a power source and dependent on computer technology will make the life span more limited due to possible power surges and computer malfunction, but that is required in our day and age.

Amazon provided a great price, great shipping, and access to a great product. Hopefully the life cycle of the bike will be as pleasant and positive as the initial experience!...more info

  • Schwinn 231 - Smooth and Quiet
I have had the bike for about 1 month. Assembly was fairly straight-forward. I did drop a washer down into the front housing and haven't found it yet. Otherwise it took about 2 hours.

The bike is whisper quiet and smooth pedaling. It is great for sitting in front of the TV and keeping active. There is no bike noise to interfere with the TV sound. (The fan is noisy and weak and I don't usually use it) The pedaling is natural and the shift between "gears" is smooth. You could read while on the bike with little difficulty. I wish there was some way to shut off the "beep" every time it advances a step in the program but it is not that loud.

The programs are good. I like the cross-training and ramp programs. The recovery function is a nice addition. I haven't really done the fitness test or other add-ins. You can get a really good work-out with this bike. I can get my heart rate to about 80-90% maximum.

I would buy this bike again. It has a lot of nice features you would expect to pay more for. I though it might be flimsy but it is quite solid and sturdy....more info
  • Good but smelly
Schwinn has made a good product at a decent price, but it's not perfect. First the good points. This bike is solid and quiet. It really feels sturdy when you're peddling away due to the wide base. It has a great back-lit screen that is clear and easy to read. And of course like all recumbent workout bikes this is great for watching TV, reading, or even playing Xbox games while working out.

There are some features I would have liked. This unit has no memory to save the results of your previous workouts like the more costly units. It would be nice to see a few progress charts and have the computer suggest programs and set target speeds based on your previous results. They really need to take advantage of the computer by adding a guided exercise program.

The water bottle holder is adequate but since the bottle is on its side you need to make sure to close your bottle or else it will leak. The unit is very tall and long, so it doesn't pack away into a corner very well. Also the computer monitor stand does not raise or lower (it only tilts) so it can get in the way of the TV. And finally, the rubber seat material smells terrible. There is a strong, musky odor that hasn't gone away after a week. I called Nautilus for support and they suggested spraying it with Armor All Protectant to seal it up so hopefully that will do the trick.

Overall I am very happy with this purchase and can feel my health improving already. It's a great way to combat laziness while watching TV....more info
  • I love this bike :)
I bought this bike about 2 weeks ago. Amazon called with a choice of delivery dates, which was very convenient. It was delivered with no problems. My husband put it together for me and was extremely pleased with the easy to follow directions, and that a set of tools with everything needed to assemble it was included in the package. Thanks to those who posted about jotting down the serial # during assembly - good hint. When people wrote that this unit is "quiet" when in use, they weren't kidding. What a pleasure. I've only been using it about a week and half - starting out slow a few minutes each day, and adding time as I go. I still haven't figured out all the programs, but I like that I can do just straight biking, with various levels, or the pre-set programs. I've been doing "riding in the park". So far I would recommend this bike.

  • Love my bike
I did a lot of research before purchasing the Swinn recumbent bike. I have another exercise bike and a treadmill. Both are excellent exercise machine. However I never could get a comfortable seat for the bike, I purchased three. It has arms to pull and push which could not be turned off. I have shoulder problems and can not use the arms. I have arthritis in my feet and can not walk on my treadmill, which has made me very unhappy.
I really enjoy this new bike. It is quiet and very stationary-I watch the news or read while I ride. I like the different programs. I usually go for a "ride in the park" and have been able to increase the intensity level. My goal is to ride to California. I have to have a goal.
I highly recommend this bike to anyone but especially those with arthritis in lower extremities who can not walk very far without pain. ...more info
  • Excellent Choice
I did my research, and the toughest choice once I narrowed it down was upright or recumbent. Next was Schwinn 231 or Schwinn 230.
I went recumbent because of a bad back. I have been a runner for years, and all that pounding has taken it's toll on a bad back condition. So buying this bike was a huge step for me in finding an alternative to running.
Upon shipping receipt, box was slightly damaged, but very well packed and protected. All parts were in fine shape and nothing was missing. It took just under 2 hours to assemble. No issues here.
I have been using the bike for about a month now. It is excellent and deserves the 5 star rating. It's sturdy and very well built. It's extremely quiet as many other reviewers have noted. The program choices give you many options from challenging plateaus to a ride in the park. You choose what type of ride you feel like doing. The difficulty levels switch gears very smoothly and also very quietly. The back lumbar support is very comfortable and my back has felt great with no issues since I started riding this bike. I would recommend this to anyone.
There are 3 differences between the 231 and 230: adjustable back support, wider pedals, and backlit with program enhanced control panel. Worth the extra $100. I say yes, you make the call. ...more info
  • Best purchase ever!
My husband and I are in our mid-50's, each with health issues that prevents us from strenuous exercise. We had recumbent bikes recommended to us, and after extensive website searches, review comparisons, and actual demo rides on other models, I began searching for the Schwinn 230 or 231 BEST DEAL. By far,'s pricing on our Schwinn 231 was the best, especially with free shipping! The bike was complicated to assemble, but my best friend had gotten hers from the same day, and said she would come over and assemble ours, too. It took me about 45 minutes to 1 hr. to check off the parts, since the originating shipping company delivered the box to the local delivery company opened entirely up the length of one side! Parts were falling out of the container, and I signed with that disclaimer on the delivery ticket. Miraculously, all were there. It took my friend, with a "little" help from me, approx. 1.5 hrs to assemble the bike. BUT, best thing: we USE it daily. It is SO quiet, we can watch TV, read, talk on the phone or to each other, etc., so it doesn't have to isolate the user from everything in some basement or back corner of a bedroom! The only disappointment I have is the fan - poor quality, very little air circulation. That was one of the main sell...more info

  • Versatile Exercise Bike
The Schwinn 231 Recumbent Exercise Bike is the first exercise bike that I have owned. I have used exercise bikes that others owned, but really never seriously considered buying one for myself. However, when I noticed that Amazon were selling the 231 for $100 off their regular price, I decided to buy it. I had no problems assembling the 231, but after assembly, it would not initially work. I spent some time on the phone with Nautilus support, and we came to the conclusion that the problem was the AC Adapter. They sent me a replacement Adapter; but in the meantime, I discovered that the Adapter contacts would not make contact with any of the AC recepticles in my house. I finally simply plugged it into an extention cord, and it worked. The bike is very quiet, has many exercise options, and even has a rudimentary heart monitor. I am very pleased with it. Even more importantly for me, I am actually using it regularly....more info
