Product Description

Combining southern warmth with unabashed emotion and side-splitting hilarity, Fannie Flagg takes readers back to Elmwood Springs, Missouri, where the most unlikely and surprising experiences of a high-spirited octogenarian inspire a town to ponder the age-old question: Why are we here?

Life is the strangest thing. One minute, Mrs. Elner Shimfissle is up in her tree, picking figs, and the next thing she knows, she is off on an adventure she never dreamed of, running into people she never in a million years expected to meet. Meanwhile, back home, Elner’s nervous, high-strung niece Norma faints and winds up in bed with a cold rag on her head; Elner’s neighbor Verbena rushes immediately to the Bible; her truck driver friend, Luther Griggs, runs his eighteen-wheeler into a ditch–and the entire town is thrown for a loop and left wondering, “What is life all about, anyway?” Except for Tot Whooten, who owns Tot’s Tell It Like It Is Beauty Shop. Her main concern is that the end of the world might come before she can collect her social security.

In this comedy-mystery, those near and dear to Elner discover something wonderful: Heaven is actually right here, right now, with people you love, neighbors you help, friendships you keep. Can’t Wait to Get to Heaven is proof once more that Fannie Flagg “was put on this earth to write” (Southern Living), spinning tales as sweet and refreshing as iced tea on a summer day, with a little extra kick thrown in.

From the Hardcover edition.

  • Review of Can't Wait to Get To Heaven: A Novel
This item was part of a Christmas Gift for my daughter-in-law, who is head of the Autistic Department of a large Medical Center in Edison, NJ. This item was on her "Wish List" and she was delighted to find it among her gifts. She tells me that she has not had an opportunity to read it yet, but hopes to soon....more info
  • Can't Wait to get too Heaven
A great book, except I ordered a LARGE PRINT edition and received a small print book. I couldn't send back and go through that process because of time constraints. I had to reorder and ask for fast shipping to meet my obligation with this matter....more info
  • Fiction is always fiction...
A sweet book. I liked Elners' version of Heaven. Her simple way of
thinking about life made her a "Grand" person in all her friends and families lives. Maybe you can learn something from fiction after all....more info
  • Can't wait to read the next Fannie Flagg book!

  • Fun entertainment
This was a pleasant feel good book about an elderly lady and her attitude toward life and death. It has a happy ending, pleasant writing, good character development and leaves you smiling. It does poke some fun at conventional religious beliefs but it is done with humor and kindness, not animosity. ...more info

  • Can't wait to get to Heaven
This is by far the funniest book I have ever read, very enjoyable! I have read all of Fannie Flaggs and they are all great, but this one and Standing in the Rainbow were by far my favorites!...more info
  • Uplifting!!!
Fannie Flagg is at her best. This humorous book is about Elner, a wonderful old lady who falls out of her fig tree, "dies", and goes to Heaven. It's about how her life/death affected so many people she knew. . .her loving niece, her niece's husband during a middle age crisis, a young man she "adopted", the neighbors, and the only other person in the world who knows why the knife was in the bottom of her clothes hamper.

I ordered 6 copies of this book for my close girlfriends because we suffered the loss of one of our best friends in a tragic swimming accident in June of 2006. I like to think that her transition was as peaceful and enjoyable as Elner's. I know my friend is in Heaven and like to think it is like that Fannie Flagg has fictionilized.

I also relate to Elner's niece. I have an eccentric, bipolar Uncle in a nursing home who I am responsible for. Elner=Uncle Robert. Both of them hoots.

  • Can't Wait to Get to Heaven
I don't believe Fanny Flagg can write a "bad" book. Even the twist near the end of this one added to it's delight....more info
  • Cant Wait to get to Heaven
Fannie Flagg Is the Best Writer I have come across in many years. She has a magic on par with Mark Twain. You will fall in love with her novels and I would recommend any and all. I cant say enough good things about her. Even before I finished my first book of hers I ordered all of the rest! I only hope she writes many more as they are each a jewel and a treasure. Happy reading....more info
  • Flagg makes you love her Characters
I loved Standing in the Rainbow, and I loved Can't Wait To Get To Heaven even more. The characters are lovable and laughable. Aunt Elner's comments are priceless and made the book in my opinion. The town of Elmwood Springs is a special place that Flagg has created and I hope she continues to bring it to life. One of the greatest things about America, and something that not everyone will get to experience, is life in a small town. Well, Fannie Flagg brings that experience home for everyone, and she is a joy to read. ...more info
  • Sometimes you just need to have a little fun
And that's what this book was for me. It was a sweet look at an elderly lady and her influence in life and death. There were moments when I laughed out loud, and other moments when it was just plain sappy, but in a fun kick-up-your-feet-and-just-enjoy-the-ride kind of way. ...more info
  • A Flagg Waver!
I was going to give this book a four as I was initially turned off by some of the cutsie writing. The quirky names were a little too quirky. The handling of the heavenly visit was a little too odd. But then I asked what kind of book deserved a five? Is it a book you want to read straight through cover to cover? Is it a book that leaves you feeling good? Is it a book that leaves the reader with some resolve to live life more fully? Is it a book that sometimes makes the reader misty? If so, then this book has it. I said to myself, "Put down the highbrow attitude and just relish in the fun." And this really is a fun book. Curl up with it and just let it happen. The chapters are very short and the pace keeps on going. Best of all, old Aunt Elner reminded me so of my own grandmother that I want my kids to read it so they might know a little bit about her. All the other characters were also a pretty good representation of someone I have known. Fannie Flagg is an American treasure. But now I have to go as it has been some time since I read "Welcome to the World Baby Girl" and I'm fixin' to reread it. ...more info
  • Funny Fannie!
I gave this book to my mom to read while she recuperated from knee replacement surgery this past year. She loved it and then passed it on to my aunt to read. I suppose I will get it passed to me one day!...more info
  • Can't Wait To Get To Heaven
Absolutely Easy & Fun to Read. If you thought you liked Jan Karon you will absolutely love this book. Written in the same style of a small hometown where you get know all the characters, Fannie Flagg's style is just so much more fun to read. You will really enjoy her writing....more info
  • lacked a plot
Elner Shimfissle, of Elmwood Springs, Missouri, was picking figs when she was stung by wasps, fell off of her ladder (which her niece, Norma, told her to stay off of), and then found herself in a Kansas City Hospital- dead? Or maybe not. Can't Wait to Get to Heaven is about how Elner touched so many people's lives, and how those people react when they hear about her death.

I was not impressed with Can't Wait to Get to Heaven. I think this book would be more enjoyed by an older audience. Many of the characters are seniors, and I found that I was not really relating to the story. I also thought the dialogue was unrealistic. When Elner reaches heaven on page 117, she sees polka-dotted squirrels, and discovers that the makers of our universe go by Dorothy and Raymond. Heaven itself in this book seems less thought out, and more just plain crazy.

This book did do a good job of portraying the feelings of its characters. One page 50, when Norma gets the news of her aunt's supposed death, she "collapsed and slowly slid off the chair, and Macky and the doctor were just barely able to catch her, a second before the back of her head hit the floor." Norma was very close to Aunt Elner, and she was devastated when she found out. She was appointing the blame to herself and her husband, Macky. I felt really bad for her.

I did not like this book, because it there was no plot, and I thought it seemed to drag on and on. I just couldn't relate, but maybe you will enjoy it more than I did.

  • Great characters - nice plot twist
I received this book as a Christmas gift from my mom. I have read other Fannie Flagg books and was excited to get started on her newest novel. It was wonderful - I couldn't put it down and finished it in one day. The characters are well defined and very real. I was pleased with the plot twist at the end. I can see myself reading this book over and over. ...more info
  • As wonderful and funny as all her books.
I've read each of Fanny Flagg's books and this one - as all the others holds my interest from page one. These are keepers. I have loaned only one - with the promise of breaking knees if it wasn't returned. Many of my other books are recycled to resell books as credit for newer ones - but NEVER Fanny's books. This is funny from start to finish. Don't miss out on reading this book....more info

  • Such Fun (And So Sorry When It Ended)!
Some people guffaw when they read, but I'm not one of them--generally. This book had me howling with laughter and slapping my knee. What a happy, feel-good book. What a great sense of humor. I'm jealous of anyone who has not yet read it....more info
  • Storyteller
I love Fannie Flagg's books. She is a wonderful storyteller who brings her characters to life. I almost want to 'Google' them to see if they are real. I loved this one, and went back and re-read Standing in the Rainbow, which has many of the same people. Since I'm not a small town girl from middle America, I don't know why I love her books. I just do. ...more info
