The Actron CP9180 OBD II AutoScanner Plus Diagnostic Code Scanner encompasses many professional features in an inexpensive scan tool. If you are new to diagnostic scanners, this handy tool connects to your vehicle, scans various parts of your car, truck or SUV, and retrieves a list of diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) and code definitions from your vehicle's computer. But even if you're a veteran to scanners and auto repair, you'll be impressed with the new functionality that Actron has added to the CP9180. This device not only scans your vehicle, it also allows you to freeze-frame live timing and pinpoint your vehicle's problem. Instead of having to recreate a scenario over and over again, you can now playback the timing to scrutinize all the data and make a clear diagnosis. Combine this with Internet connectivity and the ability to interface with a PC, and you have a powerful, professional diagnostic scanner in the palm of your hand. This device is compatible with all OBD II (On-Board Diagnosis II) compliant vehicles manufactured in North America, Asia, and Europe from 1996 to the present.

The Actron CP9180 easily scans and retrieves DTCs. View larger.

TrueLink Technology assures a fast and accurate diagnostic output.

The CP9180 is bilingual (Spanish). View other features.
In addition, the CP9180 is fully updateable via the Internet, so it is designed to accommodate future vehicles as well. The device features a large, easy-to-read backlit screen that shows the trouble code and its definition. And although you still have to fix the problem that your scanner detects, this device will deactivate the "check engine" light on your dash so you'll no longer be distracted while you drive. Every Actron scan tool and code reader incorporates CAN (Controller Area Network) and the patented TrueLink Technology which guarantees the tool will link to and communicate with every OBD II compliant vehicle. This assures a fast and accurate diagnostic output -- a key ingredient to an effective repair.

The CP9180 is simple and easy to use. The included OBD II cable provides both data and power connections, while the USB cable offers a quick and easy way to connect your scanner to your PC. In addition to connecting to the computer for Internet updates, you'll also appreciate the CP9180's USB connectivity because it makes printing DTCs and other information a breeze. Once the scanner is connected to your vehicle, the user friendly menu provides a variety of information in a snap. This device displays freeze frame data, O2 monitor tests, state emissions, and even records and displays live sensor data so you know what's happening with your vehicle as you make adjustments. Other features include an OBD II code library built right into the tool, an OBD II drive cycle mode, battery power so you can review diagnostic data even when the scanner is disconnected from your vehicle, and a bilingual (English, Spanish) mode.

Another important thing to remember is that all emission testing facilities will fail a vehicle that has the "check engine" light illuminated at the time of the test -- even if it is only lit to remind you of a past-due oil change or 60,000-mile tune-up. With this scanner, you can shut off the check engine light and pass the emissions test on your terms. The menu also alerts you of any pending DTCs and reads the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) status. By reading the MIL status the scanner gives insight into what might cause your "check engine" light to turn on in the near future. In this way, the scanner also provides some preventive measures to help you keep a close eye on your vehicle's systems. These functions, combined with the simple keypad used to read, erase, and navigate DTCs, make the CP9180 scanner a perfect solution for identifying problems with your vehicle and keeping you safe on the road.

Customer Reviews:

  • no computer support for apple
I am very happy with all of the functions of this product except its inability to support the mac format. The company needs to support its software for mac users. This lack of support was a surprise to me and that is why I am writing this so that others will be fully informed prior to a purchase....more info
  • Great item
I wanted to upgrade an older scanner and was told it was out of date, so I ordered this item to check on my truck, and clear some codes. I have found out since then how much more this can do!!!!! It has done all I wanted and more. I can monitor the engine while driving down the road in real time. Great tool!!!!!...more info
  • Works well, software not included in package.
This scanner works great, only reason I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars is that the software didn't come with the sealed package. I had to email Actron and give them a physical address (They refused my PO Box... I've had issues with regular mail disappearing, so I always try to have things sent to the box). From other reviews I've read, it seems that many of the units ship w/o the CD.

The software CD did arrive, but now that I've read my codes & fixed the issues on two of my cars, I haven't taken the time to install / eval it....more info
  • Actron CP9180 is a winner
Purchased this scanner and hooked it up and found it extremely easy to use, a lot of extras. The price was one of the best I found. I would recommend it to anyone....more info
  • Works Good
I looked at Actron, Sun, AutoXray, and Equus. Settled on this as the best compromise between ability and price. Purchased to use on a '98 VW, 108k miles. It was sputtering badly and I had looked at several things to no avail. As soon as I hooked this up it gave me diag' codes for #1 and #4 cylinders misfiring. I now had a direction to look. The fuel injector connector for #1 was loose and the spark plug wire for #4 was high ohm. It's already paid for itself. They did fail to include the users manual CD but an email had it to me in less than a week. -b-...more info
  • Excellent
Great unit. The trouble code on my pickup said it was a water temp sensor. But using this unit I was able to see that my second O2 sensor was out. Easy fix. Saved me a lot of time and trouble. ...more info

  • More Than Expected

I did some research before I bought this unit and it paid off... I was expecting the best unit at a fair price, but what I got exceeded my expectations. I would certainly recommend this unit to anyone that wants to find out what that "check engine" light is all about.

*First Class*!.. Buy it, you won't be disappointed.

  • Does what its suppose to do.
This ODB code scanner works as I expected.
So far I have used it on three different cars (Subaru, VW & Toyota)
and it worked fine on all of them. Scanner paid for its self on
    the first use....more info
  • Actron CP9180, Great Scanner, Great Price
The Scanner arrived EARLY, in great shape, but the software was not in the package. The blister pack was factory sealed. I called Actron and they are sending the software. The scanner performed well and was easy to use. ...more info

  • Paid for Itself
The scanner was easy to use right out of the box and operated as advertised. It paid for itself on the second use and saved me a lot of time as well. It would be even better if it were compatible with the O2 sensors on my truck....more info
  • Half-Baked PC interface.
Scanner works fine, downloaded error code, cleared code, and triggered recording on code just fine. Then I tried to get the recording off on to my PC.

The PC software is half-finished and barely working.
A). USB drivers don't install unless you install them manually.
B). PC software has only 2 features, update firmware and print data. Since the last firmware release was in 6/8/2007, it is safe to assume Actron is not updating their firmware, so that means the PC software has only ONE piece of functionality: Print data. Print data just prints what displays on the Actron screen. Easier to write it out by hand then to try and install the software manually just to download the data.
Further, the PC software has all sorts of buttons and functions that just don't work, like they started writing the software then just stopped. There is a wizard to register a scan tool, called "Add a scan tool" the wizard just stops on screen 3, and the title of the screen says: "Title of enter manually screen" like some non-English speaker just never finished the software, it's that much of a joke.
I'm considering trying to return this to Amazon, just because the PC software is not finished, and totally useless.

  • So far So good!
I recently purchased and used this scanner on my 2002 Tundra. It read just like the Emissions station scanner and gave the same info. Change the O2 sensor, saved the info then erased the trouble code. Worked as described so far but need to master and use in more situations before I can give a real indepth review. Am happy with purchase and recommend this product. ...more info

Actron CP9180 AutoScanner Plus Diagnostic Code Scanner with Live, Record and Playback Data Capability and O2 Monitor Test for OBDII (Post-1996) Vehicles]]
This is a very good product and does what it's supposed to do and is very easy to read
The only problem I had is they shipped it USPS Select and it took 14 days to travel 200 miles...more info
  • Not sure how it could be easier to use
With the caveat that I've not tried using the software that came with it, using the scanner itself with both my 2003 GMC Sierra and my 2003 Subaru Baja couldn't be easier. Codes were easily read and the real time data readouts helped me understand my Subaru temperature gauge - which tended to have wild swings between hot and cold depending on whether I was going up hills or not. Leaving the scanner plugged in while driving allows you to monitor many system variables. A solid tool that's easy to use and relatively easy to understand, especially if you have a set of factory service manuals available (which I do for the GMC, but not for the Subaru)....more info

  • Work as advertise
This product works as advertise. I tried it right out of the box on my wife 2003 impala and was able to retrieve a 02 sensor pending code.
It lets you read some sensors, including the coolant sensor, and run live diagnostics. You can also monitor your o2 sensors.
It's easy to use, and doesn't require advance knowledge.
The price is very reasonable too.
The built in library of definitions is nice, but you'll find much more info online for your specific code.
Window Vista users beware!!! the Actron software is not compatible with vista. You can install it on the computer but you won't be able to update the scanner. I have to update it at work where I use window XP.
Something else: the case that comes with the scanner is too big for it. It's not a big deal, but I don't see why Actron can't provide a case that is the right size. ...more info
  • Great Tool!
I'm very happy with this purchase. This tool has already paid for itself. I was able to diagnose and replace a faulty crankshaft sensor myself, saving a couple hundred dollars.

Also diagnosed an issue with a friends Mazda that turned out to be covered by warrantee, so she was happy.

If you like saving money and doing auto repairs yourself, get this OBDII code scanner....more info
  • was ok
The good thing about this scanner is it supports the new cars and trucks. As well, it is compleatly up-gradeable if the car companys decide to change again. However, one of the other units with half the cost could have done what I needed, and a complete system for twice as much would have done all I wanted. The more expensive system(with your laptop)allows you to do minor adj. to the ingnition timing,air/fuel mixture and shift peramiters for the transmition to compensate for engine wear..oh ya and allows you to reset the check brake lite(was hoping this unit would but it is a completly different system function)...more info
  • Easy to use
I chose this over the competitors because of the feature set in the ~$150 price range. On paper it appeared to be an excellent value, with all of the features I was looking for and then some. O2 monitor test was a plus, especially considering that O2 sensors on my car are known to have issues.

Soon after I received this in the mail, I had the package opened, directions read and device hooked up to my car. In all it took less than half an hour to understand all but the data record functions of this unit. Having never used a code scanner before, I was a little worried that it may be complex to operate, but that is not the case. Basic functionality was extremely straightforward. I ended up diagnosing a rough idle condition that was pinpointed to cylinder #4 ignition coil.

In one use, I have saved myself hundreds of dollars. Never again will I pay a dealer to read the codes in my cars! Many would be happy with a smaller unit that does only the basics, reads codes and resets the MIL. But, if your budget allows and you would benefit from the code descriptions displayed on-screen, I highly recommend this unit!...more info
