Customer Reviews:

  • As expected
I've found the product to perform its function. I'm not very hardware savvy, but it was simple to use; basically plug-n-play. There have been no poor connection issues related to the modem. My current internet provider is Cox....more info
  • Works like it's suppose to.
Had a previous motorola model that worked fine until it stopped working and was apparently unsalvageable. This product will probably follow the same course. Work for 4-5 years and then need to be replaced. My only complaint would be the longevity of these products is poor....more info
  • As promised
For my setup, I have my cable service from Cox, my cable modem, and an Linksys wireless router. The day my modem arrived, I took it out of the box and plugged it in. I called Cox, navigated through their automated phone menu system, and read off the MAC ID to the tech services person. He did some stuff on his end to first recognize the new cable modem. Then he had to do some other configuration on his end because of the router. Once that was done, viola! We've been using the cable modem for the past week or so without problem.

Be aware that a number of ISPs can block certain ports - this does not matter what modem you have as all are mainly DOIS compliant. This may not be a problem for you. But for some people, it can be. Before you buy and sign up for service, look around the web and make sure it's what you want. Cable people will deny they do this, but they do. And it can really mess up your experience if you are a "power user" and give you lots of trouble.

  • Motorola Cable Modem SB 5101
This Motorola SB 5101 Cable Modem replaced my Toshiba 2200. Motorola's Modem is compatible with Cox Communications, and can be upgraded when DOCSIS -3 goes into effect. It is slightly faster than the older modem. It also has a button on top if you wish to leave the computer for a short time and it will go into standby mode. A nice touch. No complaints in two months or so. ...more info

  • I was skeptical, but it's true!
After many years with the original Toshiba PCX1100 rented from the cable company, I decided to buy one of these units, hoping that I might start to see some change in my connection speed as hyped by Comcast's "Power Boost" marketing. When I ran internet speed tests I consistently got download speeds from 4-6 mbps, when Comcast said that PowerBoost now gave me up to 12. Upload speeds were pathetic - under 100 kbps! Just as others have said, once I plugged this in and registered it with Comcast, I started getting speeds over 16 mbps - three to four times as fast as I had been with the old modem. Upload speed is now faster than download speed had been. The Comcast folks chuckled when I brought in the old modem - "I haven't seen one of these in forever!" Buy this - you won't regret it! ...more info
  • Works like a charm
After researching what modems were compatible with Comcast, I picked this one. I decided to buy rather than rent from the cable company. It came, I took it out of the box, hooked it up and after a rather long call with Comcast (not the modem's fault) everything was up and running. Added an airport extreme, and my house is now wireless with a very fast connection. Totally satisfied with this product, have had it for about 6 weeks with ZERO problems/issues....more info

  • Cable Modem Review
We all would love to have unlimited access to the internet nowadays, especially since everyone has gone wireless. But if you're not going the wireless way, I would suggest this product to anyone looking for a Cable Modem. Motorola knows what they're doing, and they've been around for more than 20 years. ...more info
  • Quick and easy speed boost!
I just replaced my Linksys WCG200 cable gateway modem. The Linksys was installed for the past 4 years on a Comcast network. Bandwidth speed test always came back as 7Mb/s download and 1Mb/s upload. It started slowing down lately and had trouble with web pages hanging up. I called Comcast and they told me the signal was good to my house. I thought I would try and swap the modem and see if there was any improvement. Right before I swapped the modem, I ran a speed test [...]. Results came back 5.9Mb/s download and 1.1Mb/s upload. I unhooked the Linksys and plugged in the Motorola. I called Comcast and gave them the MAC address of the new modem and they activated it. It was quick and easy. Except for the 18 minutes on hold waiting for a Comcast support rep. The first thing I did is run the same speed test I did before I unhooked the Linksys. I was shocked to see the results. It came back as 26Mb/s download and 3.2Mb/s upload. I was hoping for an improvement but was really shocked to see that much improvement! Now I feel cheated because my old modem was holding me back for all those years.

I added an Apple Extreme Wi-Fi base station to this modem. It worked like a charm and now all 5 computers in the house have the same high speed results.

I would definitely recommend this modem....more info

  • seems fine
When I first got it, it seemed to speed up my laptop... but didn't do much for the desktop that was attached to it. May be a little peppier, but seems to have settled to seem about the same as the old Motorola 3000 I had.
