Customer Reviews:

  • Outstanding Printer, Gorgeous Prints
I've been using this printer for over a year now. After getting my paper and profile choices dialed in (Ilford Galerie Gold Fibre Silk with profile provided on Ilford's web site) the 3800 has been making consistently outstanding prints. Color prints are as good or better than Lightjet or Chromira prints I've had made by high-end professional labs. Black and white prints, using the ABW driver, exceed the quality of anything I was able to produce after years of work in the wet darkroom or messing around with 3d party inksets, tone curves, etc on earlier Epson printers. And the 3800 provides a near infinite range of toning options at the "touch of a button." The printer has worked flawlessly; not a clog yet. There are also some excellent on-line resources for the 3800(worth checking out before making the decision to buy). The only downsides for me have been the time and hassle involved in moving back and forth between the matte and glossy blacks (with the result that I almost never use matte papers anymore) and the cost of cartridges when you (finally) have to replace them. Although, to be fair, I'm just needing to replace my first cartridge after a year of moderate use. I expect that I will be very happy with this printer for years to come....more info
  • A stunning ++ Printer Follow-up! 2/4/08
It is amazing what this printer can do with a high quality 5MP file on a 17x22. Most who see the results are quite surprised. Fast - well made and very easy to use. Very pleased - I am a regular home type photographer. The colors are beautiful - the renditions smooth and sharp! I have had this printer for 8+ months now. (follow-up 2/04/08)I am a very low volume family photographer - one who would tend not to buy this printer. I remain very pleased - some clogged heads and easy to clean. I shake the carts. every other month. The new print drivers cleared up the networking problems. The prints and the media choices are superb. So far so good! I just love the large prints....more info
  • Excellent printer, but build quality is average
I had to exchange the first 3800 I bought because the tiny plastic clasp that holds the front cover closed was broken. My previous 2200 had a much better closing mechanism. However, the replacement printer's door stays closed (knock on wood) and the print quality is superb. The Epson inks, despite costing an arm/leg, are the best out there. Plus, the supplied ICC profiles supplied for Epson papers are also excellent. So, overall, I give the 3800 a five rating. I just wish the build quality was better. ...more info
  • Right off the bat - absolutely amazing.
First impressions mean a lot, especially when it comes to setting up expensive new equipment and giving it a first go. I just received this printer today (ordered from here). Packaging was sound, instructions were clear, setup was a breeze, and I've so far printed about 5 photos and pieces of very high resolution artwork and have been truly stunned at the results. For only owning this for a few hours, I can't give an 'experienced' review, but I can say that this printer's first impressions have been nothing short of spectacular so far. ...more info
  • Gorgeous, Gorgeous... Right out the box!
Printer looks pretty good on my desk thanks to my wife who gave it to me as an early Christmas gift today.... Smiles. But who cares, right? What about the printer? Well, superb prints right out the box. I've been printing with the Canon I9900 and thought nothing compared with it for color and detail.... I was wrong.

  • Just the Best
As said by others, the 3800 does a beautiful job right out of the box. I have been using an Epson Photo 785EPX which does a good job but will only print up to 8X10. This is an investment and to me is well worth the money....more info
  • Wonderful Printer
I have used this printer for about 3 weeks. It is awesome, I love it. I am a photographer with experience doing B&W and color developing. This printer is a major advance. The large format creates such impact and the quality is so good that, for the first time, I am hearing comments like, "You can sell these prints!" I like the sound of that....more info
  • Exceeds expectations
Received the SP3800 on Dec6; it replaces an SP2200 which I have enjoyed. (I also use an SP R800 and SP960.) I have tried both Matte and glossy, 4X6 to (finally!) 17X22, and everything works as advertised. A very notable difference may be seen when comparing printouts side-by-side with those from the other printers--a subtle improvement in shading and coloring from the SP3800. I had not even noticed a deficiency in the earlier outputs. It seems trite to say it, but the 3800 output just seems "more realistic." I have one photo of a rainbow over Niagara Falls, with the walk below in deep shadow. The SP3800 shadow has enough shading subtleties that the objects on this walk may be discerned. In my case, the SP3800 gives me more than I expected....more info
  • Exceeded my Expectations
This printer met and exceeded my expectations. I had read several reviews from others but was surprised to see how easy it was to use such a powerful tool. If you have properly calibrated your monitor and this printer your will produce a exceptional quality prints. ...more info
  • Much to like but one setup challenge
I just bought the printer but had problems setting it up. My first prints (on Epson Ultra Premium Luster Paper) came out smudged and had rows of little pin pricks on them. I had to call Technical Support (very good - especially that Epson has a special service for professional printers) to get talked through widening the platen gap. I have not yet found a permanent way to widen the gap - it starts out at standard width whenever I turn on the printer.

Colors and sharpness are very good. It's not very fast, but then other large format printers are probably slow too when printing an 11x14 at 1400 dpi....more info
  • Knockout prints
Couldn't be happier. Colors are rich and accurate, no matter what the subject matter or lighting conditions. Perfect....more info
