Universal Waterworld - HD DVD/DVD Combo
Kevin Costner, Dennis Hopper and Jeanne Tripplehorn star in a "10+!" (Gary Franklin, KCOP), turbocharged action-adventure epic, unmatched in sheer excitement and heart-pounding suspense. In this futuristic thriller, Earth is covered with water and the human race struggles to survive on dilapidated boats and makeshift floating cities. Costner portrays a drifter who becomes caught up in the struggle between the evilDeacon (Hopper) and a child's secret key to a wondrous place called "Dryland." With refreshing humor, groundbreaking special effects and awe-inspiring action suspense, Waterworld sets a glorious high-water mark for imaginative, thrill-packed entertainment.
Let's be honest: this 1995 epic isn't nearly as bad as its negative publicity led us to expect. At the time it was the most expensive Hollywood production in history (it had a Titanic-sized $200 million budget), and the film arrived in theaters with so much controversy and negative gossip that it was an easy target for ridicule. The movie itself, a flawed but enjoyable post-apocalypse thriller, deserves better. Waterworld stars Kevin Costner as the Mariner, a lone maverick with gills and webbed feet who navigates the endless seas of Earth after the complete melting of the polar ice caps. The Mariner has been caged like a criminal when he's freed by Helen (Jeanne Tripplehorn) and enlisted to help her and a young girl (Tina Majorino) escape from the Smokers, a group of renegade terrorists led by Dennis Hopper in yet another memorably villainous role. It is too bad the predictable script isn't more intelligent, but as a companion piece to The Road Warrior, this seafaring stunt-fest is adequately impressive. --Jeff Shannon
- Excellent Fun and Adventure
This movie is great fun. and the action scenes are incredible. I cant undrstand why this movie got so many negative reviews. I got to love this film after seeing it more than once. Its like watching mad max. Its plain fun and Dennis Hoper is great as the bad guy. ...more info
- Someone Likes this film?
I cannot believe that there are positive reviews for one of Kevin Costner's worst films. Predictable plot full of stereotypes and bad links to current affairs - villans are called "Smokers" and ride around in the Exxon Valdez. People with cigarettes in an oil tanker? In the end a dribble that cannot even compare to Mad Max films which were made on shoestring budget for the most part. Even the weakest entry - the 3rd was better than this movie....more info
- Not as bad as people said it was ...
Including me! If Jay and Silent Bob had made it, everyone would have said it was brilliant, the problem is the KC bought his "worthyness" to the project no doubt and managed to make a fun movie with no worthyness at all! Go figure.
I couldn't really see a moral to the story, the science and technology is debatable to say the least, its too long and an extended version is actually sanctioned state punishment in some countries. For example, in Malawi, minor criminals are made to sit though the normal version and then the "extended" version for re-offenders.
That been said, if you view this film as just a Mad Max on water clone, its good fun and not a bad film.
Not enough fish in it though. And too much effort trying to grow stuff. Catch fish instead. Fish is the secret to survival in Waterworld. And solar stills for water.
- Underrated movie
For some good ol' post-apocalyptic fun, this movie fits the bill just fine. No, it's not a particularly intelligent movie, but it's not trying to be, and the action and adventure are all there. It's taken a lot of flak for going way over budget and "bombing", but if you take into account that a storm destroyed their island set, requiring a rebuild, it may have very well been profitable domestically. Then, once you factor in global sales, the movie, storm or not, was actually quite profitable. ...more info
- The whole movie, the whole movie...
and nothing but the movie (Well, there are the extras that come with a 2-volume set, of course) but after seeing edited copies of this fine sci-fi/fantasy flick for so long, it's really nice to get every minute of the action. This is a fun film and even more fun w/o the editing....more info
- poor attempt at extended edition
This is the second movie that I have purchased produced by Universal Studios, which included a extended/director's cut that was simply a production of an edited version that was shown on broadcast television. It differs in some significant respects to the actual theatrical version with regard to the deletion or altercation of some dialogue and other scenes considered too explicit for television networks. This is a lazy and sad attempt by Universal Studios to produce a extended/director's cut. Most studios, when releasing an extended/director's cut, include ALL the material included in the theatrical release with the additional scenes cut seamlessly into the movie. Moreover, the sound and picture quality on this extended edition is also noticeably worse than on the theatrical version disc. If I wanted the version that was broadcast on television in that form, I would have videotaped it when it was on. I will seriously consider whether I will purchase another extended edition from universal studios given the little effort they seem to put forth and the little care they seem to demonstrate in pleasing their consumers and fan base....more info
- You Have to Apprciate A Good Idea .....
The Story is a good idea. As well as appriciating that you must appriciate the time and money spent on this film. They really went all out. ALL OUT.. Just the effort put forth, I connected with.
Kevin Costner..... Always a pleasure to see him in a film. Unfortanatly he fell off track as of lately with his selection of films to star in, but jumped right on track when signing on for The Gardian. He really knows how to pick em. If you loved this movie then I know you'll love the POSTMAN as well. Be open minded to a great story idea that hasn't been done before. You know BATTLEFIELD EARTH tried to create that connection also, but it was shot down. I dont get it, I really dont. ...more info
- The theatrical version SUCKS but this is awsome!!!!!!
This is the version that has plot, characterization, backstory, all the things that make movies watchable!!!!!(ARE YOU LISTENING MOVIE STUDIOS?!?!?)This used to run fairly regularly on Sci-Fi and USA networks back before NBC bought Universal and I haven't seen this version since;I was awfully afraid I'd never see it again, and I truly loathe the theatrical version.
I will be buying this! ...more info
- If you enjoy this type of thing...
I know intellectually that "Waterworld" is a dog, but I still have a soft spot for it and enjoy it when it's on tv. It's hard to go wrong with glistening oceans, millions of dollars of floating sets, a wonderful score, and Dennis Hopper chewing the scenary. (He was actually scared a lot of the film - his costume was very heavy and if he had fallen over into the water, it would have been hard to get him before he sank.)The extended cut (I've watched it) fills in a lot of story gaps, so if you've enjoyed the theatrical cut, you'll definitely want to check this version out....more info
- Finally, the extended cut!
I gotta say this but i love this movie and i have been looking forward for the extended cut for a looong time. Wich will give us more!
For example we see Helen and Enola standing atop of a cliff watching the Mariner leave before the films end credits. As they are standing there they uncover a plaque which tells us that they are at the peak of Mt. Everest.
It would be nice to see this on Blu-ray as well, there is a Hd-dvd version (the original cut) and it looks great on a big screen.
- Don't listen to the Critics! Waterworld isn't Bad at All!
It is really an urban legend that this movie, Waterworld, was the biggest flop ever made. It actually made profit. Not the mayor profit that was expected, but it did make profit.
It are the critics that panned Waterworld into the ground, which it doesn't deserve.
Well now, the movie isn't bad at all. It is a fun, action-adventure that has a lot of thrills, action, beautiful special effects and great locations. It is pure eye candy and the sets are truely amazing to look at.
Kevin Kostner was blamed for making Waterworld "fail" and it is said that this movie put his carreer downhill. That is all because the bad critics made people believe that! Costner does a fine job playing the frustrated anti-hero in this story. He does a good job.
Jeanne Tripplehorn also keeps herself standing in this movie and doesn't act bad. She looks beautiful and is part of the eye candy in this film as well.
Now Dennis Hopper is the one that doesn't do the best he can. As the badguy he does a good job, but still: he doesn't leave an impression. He acts without heart and seems a bit lost in the film sometimes.
Now the action is absolutely spectaculair and very well filmed. It is true enjoyment and just feels right. Expect big explosions, impressive battles, mindblowing special effects, and cool stunts.
Another thing that is absolutely fantastic is the music. The music is wild, adventurous and gives the scenes a great powerboost. It sounds great and it fits the mood of the film perfectly.
This movie may not have been the one for a lot of Academy Awards, it certainly didn't deserve the Razzie awards it got! It is pure adventure on film, pure excitement and just good old fun you'd expect going to the movies.
So sit back, relax and enjoy Waterworld as just some fine popcorn entertainment on a Saturdaynight.
3.5 stars out of 5 - Enjoy! ...more info
- Severely cut version. Rating relate to the DVD, not to the movie!!
Please note that my critique does not relate to the excellent picture staring Kevin Costner, Jeanne Tripplehorn and Dennis Hopper. It is not my intention to write another summary of the story line.
Maybe we are spoiled, but when we purchase a DVD, we expect to receive an uncut version. In fact, I have a 3 hours version of Waterworld on my VHS tape. This DVD offers mere 2 hours of the story! You can imagine how many of the scenes are missing: whopping 1/3 of the movie is cut off!! Sure we will get to see a few scenes removed from syndication by censors. Sadly, its the American way. But the matter of fact is, that the disappointment about the missing 33% of the movie is great. The scenes which we have not seen on the TV screen contain the Mariner peeing into a bottle at the beginning, and later a glimpse of Jeanne Tripplehorn in nude, when she offers herself to the Mariner to save Enola. Harmless, I suspect that the entire planet saw these scenes in the TV anyway, except for the United States. Welcome to the world of cultural differences.
Furthermore, this DVD does not carry any stories behind the scenes, documentaries or interviews. I am sure that the publisher will than later release yet another Waterworld DVD, or maybe even 2 DVD version, called (say) "collectors edition," and will try to sell it to us as well.
If you have seen this movie, and maybe recorded it on tape, hold your breath, wait for the complete edition! ...more info
- Guilty Pleasure
Aw common! "Wet turd of a movie" is a little harsh! Better to call it a guilty pleasure. Okay, it's not Hamlet, but a fun action/adventure film with Kevin Costner. I agree with the previous reviewer. The special effects ARE great, the James Newton Howard score IS terrific, and Dean Semler cinematography IS awsome!
I'm thrilled about an extended version. Hopefully more will be more. ...more info
- One of Costner's best
Despite what some people say, this is an excellent movie. Now with the added footage which I only saw on network television before, it is even more complete and entertaining.
Costner does his usual great job portraying a man on his own in a disastrous future or similar situation where he has to rely on his own devices and survival skills to live through them. The movie paints a realistic view of an Earth mostly covered by water.
I think most viewers thought The Dennis Hopper part was overblown and ridiculous, but it only added to the entertainment value in my opinion.
And to those of you you think SNAKES ON A PLANE, THE DUKES OF HAZZARD and SHOOT 'EM UP aren't highly entertaining summer feel-good movies; I say - go watch a piece of junk (the word 'junk' here represents a long string of expletive deleteds) like THERE'S SOMETHING ABOUT MARY instead!
And please remember, these are just my opinions. You must be your own critic, whether you are paid for it or not!
And to the highly paid TV critics who constantly bemoan about having to sit through bad and awful movies, and are offended when the studios refuse to preview thier new movies for them; I say - Quit complaining! And get off your high horse once in a while and admit that it's just your OPINION, and nothing else while cashing your paycheck.
If you don't buy the DVD, you can always rent it!...more info
- Hollywood: Take Science Classes For God's Sake!
Did no one do any homework before this turkey was OK'd? IF there were enough water to cover all the land masses on earth, the first place to find land would be Mt. Everest! Being that Mt. Everest is over 29,000 feet high, earth would
#1: Be a perfect iceball. Better to name this movie Ski World.
#2: No one could breathe at 29,000', so all of mankind is either dead from altitude or frozen like popsicles.
Can't Kevin Costner find another plot? Always bad guys come in, take over a territory (Postman, Dances With Wolves, Open Range, Waterworld.) Does no one own a comb or take a bath?
Terrible movie, so many good scripts out there languishing that will never see the light of day! But this crap does! ...more info
- This may be the ABC Broadcast Version, with Profanity dubbed over.
DVDtalk.com has reviewed this disc, and they claim the extended version is the ABC Broadcast version, which dubs over all the profanity. Brief nudity has also been removed. The extended version also aired on Encore networks without this censoring, so it doesn't make sense that Universal would choose to release an edited version of the extended cut instead of the Encore version. Buyer beware....more info
- It's not that bad....it's WORSE!
This movie was a total waste of time, money and film. It was awful on every level. The characters were lame and unbelievable, I had no sympathy for any of them. In most movies Kevin Costner is a generally a bland, cardboard actor to begin with, now combine that with a really badly written character, slow script, weak supporting roles and a predictable ending and you have this so-bad-it's-tragic movie. It isn't even "So bad it's good" material, it's just painfully bad and super boring. It's a shame too, because it's a good concept and they could have done a lot more with the story. Instead they made a weak story with super-inflated budget. Maybe if they spent less on all the explosions (which after a while ceased to be impressive) they could have hired some decent writers. I really kept wishing every character in the movie would blow up, drown or die a horrible death. This movie was a 'washout' in every way. Waterbarf, Waterweak, Waterbad, Waterbore...any nickname I could think of would not be bad enough. I would never watch this again even if someone paid me!
- I'd give it zero stars if I could
It is often said that immitation is the best form of flattery. Well, the directors of this abomination known as Water World must have LOVED 1981's "The Road Warrior" staring Mel Gibson (a 5 star movie -- buy that one instead of Water World; and also get a 4 star movie Mad Max, but avoid Beyond Thunderdome because it's not very good). What a bad knockoff of RW! On top of a plagerized script, the underlying plot is unbelievable. The world cannot drown, even if all the ice melts. There are mountains that are 2 miles tall! Think about it! The acting and action were aweful, and the characters lacked any motivation or credibility. Yeah, it is that bad! They certainly don't behave correctly, that's for sure. Where do they get their limitless ammo and fuel. At the rate they burn their fuel and ammo they'd be out of it rather quickly. I could go on and on but this movie was just so stupid and badly done, it isn't flattery to the Road Warrior but instead an insult. ...more info
- Waterworld Extended edition
Been loking for the extended edition for a long time. Saw it ( the long version) on tv, after that I did'nt like missing parts in the cut version. Me and my wife love the move....more info
- I know MANY people don't like it but I DO!
Ok, I really like this movie. A lot of people don't and that's fine. My boyfriend doesn't. Neither does my mom, or dad..or sisters. In fact, no one in my family likes this movie. But, I guess that makes me the odd one. I think I like this movie because, though it is a bit cheesy and lacks any real strong characters, it's still original. I mean, the plot is really good and unique. Another reason why I like this movie is because it helps inspire me when I write (I write stories). Everything from where the people live to their clothes to their attitudes gives me inspiration. I love the world they live in. It's different. So..I just really like this movie. I own it haha. I am such a dork.....more info
- Perfect vision of future....or past!
It`s amazing movie, really. I couldn`t even imagine and think that it would be super film with different elements: quality of directorial work, unbelievable high level of visual effects and actors` work. So good, so nice! The feeling of something kind and great stood up at me after watching.
You may not pay attention at this film, but, in my opinion, this picture is one of the best what have ever made in our unpredictable and wonderful world.
- Darmok on the ocean
Al Gore may have warned us about global warming in "An Inconvenient Truth," but Kevin Costner and co. actually showed us our disturbing future ten years ago. The polar ice caps have melted, flooding the entire earth. Costner plays The Mariner, one of the surviving humans who has adapted by growing gills and learning to drink his own body fluids.
At the start of the film, The Mariner stops at an island made from junk to try and sell a tomato plant. The inhabitants of the island notice The Mariner's gills and throw him in jail -- they don't like mutants. While in jail he meets Helen (Jeanne Tripplehorn from "Basic Instinct" and "The Firm") and her daughter Enola (Tina Majorino from "Andre" and "Napoleon Dynamite") He talks to Helen about his entrepreneurial ideas involving tomato growing and body fluid filters, and Helen thinks he is flirting. The Mariner is about to correct her when the island is attacked by the Smokers, a group of pirates on Jet Skis led by Deacon (Dennis Hopper "The American Friend" from "Speed").
The Smokers kidnap Enola, who has a map tattooed on her back, which shows the location of Dryland. Deacon needs to get to Dryland to get oil for his army of planes, boats and jetskis, but he can't decipher Enola's map. The Mariner eventually rescues Enola and defeats Deacon. When they get to Dryland The Mariner offers to pay for Enola to go to private school. This upsets Helen -- she says she doesn't want another man giving her daughter false hopes. The Mariner closes the film saying he just wanted her to learn how to subtract.
The film isn't nearly as awful critics made it out to be in 1995. The story is somewhat generic, like Mad Max on water, and sometimes it's hard to see where the 235 million dollars went, but for the most part "Waterworld" makes for solid action adventure....more info
- Good Concept But Ineptly Executed.
As a Post-Apocalyptic Reluctant-Hero Flix it doesn't measure up to its peers. Some of the ideas about scarcity and recycling by the inhabitants of a water covered world were interesting. But, ultimately, it borrows too many elements from the Mad Max series of films, so much of the plot seems familiar i.e Civilized Tribe's quest for mythical Utopia thwarted by Barbaric Tribe. The relationiship between the Hero and the woman and child seemed forced and unnatural. Costner comes across as unnecessarly cruel and aloof towards his charges. The Villians were a little too cartoonish to diffuse menace or dread. Even the parts of supposed whimsy were clouded by a depressing atmosphere. The ending was predictable and lackluster. The movie lacked tension and diminished my concern for its charaters. Aviodably, The movie suffers from an ambivalent tone resulting from the difference between the gravity derived by a brutish society where life is tenious and cheap contrasted with pantomine-like(funny, uneffecting) violence. Caused,(I believe) by pressure or interference by the Studio to make it more kid friendly (eg. PG-13) and increase its audience, (other movies that are inflicted with this marketing centric strategy include eg. Mad Max Three, Terminator Two, Star Wars Return of the Jedi & Indiana Jones 3). Overall, I found that the movie did not live up to its potential....more info
- Product defective!-Junk

The very concept of global warming is so stupid. Has it ever occured to anybody that the oceans contain 97% of all water on Earth? Only 3% of this planet's water isn't already in the oceans! There's simply not enough water in the world to drown the continents. ...more info

- Underrated Movie- Did anyone even watch WATERWORLD...Its not that bad
I admit the movie has some flaws and its still a descent film. Not one of my favourites but I was entertained nonetheless. If someone today said mentions WATERWORLD, they just say "urh thats a terrible movie". The chances are they probably haven't even seen the movie. People just follow everyone elses opinion because they want to be with the crowd. I am not a Costner fan. He does not fit the bill well for our fish-man lead. Mostly because there wasn't much development in characters. Ok the bit when Costner drinks his own pee was just awful. Its not the first thing you want to see when you enter a movie. The world flooded is quite impossible but theres your story. What pissed me off was it was too much like "Roadwarrior". If you can forget about that you might think the movie is okay. The special effects were great. It was nice to see a movie without any CGI. This was not one of the most expensive movies for nothing....more info

- My Guilty Pleasure Too
No matter what I find this movie captivating and I am hopeful that the directors cut will add in the missing puzzle pieces. I can never turn away from the cinematography, or the premise of the story. I know there were dissapointing characters, over the top actors, and useless scenes in the movie and I certainly felt like it had so much more potential. If things had not gone so horribly wrong it could have or should have been an epic for Kevin Costner. I hope others will this movie another chance. I know I will always enjoy most of this movie!!!!...more info
