  • Coolest Clint Eastwood Ever.
    Not very original (Clint got some ideas from previous westerns) but probably the coolest Clint Eastwood western of all time. Although "Unforgiven" was more realistic and "The Outlaw Josie Wales" had a better story, this one is cooler. The "Preacher" was also a better character than "The Stranger" from "High Plains Drifter." They should definitely put this one on HD DVD or Blu-ray....more info

  • 'Shane' Revisited
    This was a solid western, one of many through the years from Clint Eastwood, who knows how to make an entertaining film.

    "Pale Rider" is almost like a modern-day "Shane," in which the quiet stranger enters to help the picked-on landowners and then winds up with a showdown with the evil men in town. In this film, Eastwood plays a "preacher," (that's all he's called in this movie, but he's really a gunfighter) who saves the day for the town miners, led by Michael Moriarty.

    **** possible spoilers ****Eastwood's "Preacher" handles the immature love-struck teen (Sidney Penny) well, but blows his moral reputation by having sex with Moriarity's fianc¨¦ (Carrie Snodgrass) near the end, although no one knows that except the viewer. So - as usual - there are a lot of mixed moral messages in this film.

    A couple of things that are for sure: 1 - the interesting characters; 2 - the convincing bad guys; 3 - the beautiful scenery and photography; 4 - the involving story that makes you care what happens. All of these make this an entertaining film you would watch a number of times. ...more info
  • Excellent movie...okay DVD
    4 stars for the movie "Pale Rider". Yes, it is very "Shane"like. True, it is not the very best Clint Eastwood movie out there. Yet, overall it is a very involving movie. The scenes are gorgeous (some of the scenes could easily be Ansel Adams stills if they were in Black and White). The plot, while borrowed at several points from other classic westerns, is straight forward and good. It is a film that you can watch and watch again.

    3 stars for the DVD. It just doesn't offer that much more than a VHS. Obviously the picture and sound quality are better but the "Special Features" are just average. Get the DVD because the quality of the film is better but don't expect the "extras" to blow you away.

  • A Fun, Decent Western with a small Fistful of Problems
    Pale Rider is a nice, eerie western. It is almost the opposite of Eastwood's masterpeice, "High Plains Drifter." Eastwood plays The Preacher, a ghosly, um, well... ghost, that appears out of nowhere to help a town under attack by a corrupt mining tycoon's henchmen. He, oddly, becomes adored by the women of the town(unlike in High Plains Drifter, in which he was despised). He is actually more ghostly than in "Drifter," being there one second, and when you turn your back for a second, dissapearing. Eastwood delivers his normal, quiet, squinting appearance. However, it seems like the bad guys have nothing better to do than look out the window all day, and the main villain walks right up to Eastwood in the final battle, as if he WANTS to be shot. You keep wanting to say "WHY DIDN'T YOU SHOOT HIM?" Pale Rider is a fun western, and quite enjoyable....more info

    Old Clint really delivers in this movie. Justice is served to a company of blast miners who try to drive out a town of prospectors. Clint truly is the Pale Rider....his name was Death and Hell followed with him....more info
  • A Masterpiece
    You might be tempted for thinking that a theme as routinely mythic as the lone gunman saving a town would make for some fairly predictable stuff, but Pale Rider defies the odds and achieves a wholly new level in the genre. This is partly due to the extreme simplicity of the plot (Mining tyrant attempts a ruthless eviction of honest settlers), the astonishing scenery, but mainly a result of Eastwood's gritty, monosyllabic anti-hero, who by the end of the film seems completely enigmatic, genuinely mythic. The film draws on the old Kurosawa themes so richly plundered in 'The Magnificent Seven' and other films of the like, but this is finally a simple, age-old tale, beautifully filmed and a perfectly executed tour-de-force. It's better, even, than 'Unforgiven' and that's saying something....more info

    This was a very good movie. Clint Eastwood plays a hired gunfighter who comes to the rescue of the miners in a local

    One of the best Clint Eastwood westerns of all time. A retelling of the Shane story, but done so much better. I don't even own Shane since this beats it in every way....more info
  • Better than "Unforgiven"!!!
    This Clint Eastwood western got little attention in 1985, but it still holds up well today, with Eastwood playing the man with no name mantra, it starts out with many outlaw cowboys terrorizing mountain settlers who they are trying to run off because of possible gold that could be there, we discover that the town's owner wants the mining expedition all to his self & will do anything to acquire it, this is where Eastwood comes in, in which he helps the settlers keep what is theirs, with Michael Moriarty(Law & Order) as the settler's leader & Sydney Penny(T.V.'s All my Children) as his stepdaughter who developes a fixation on Eastwood, we learn he is a priest or so we think who has sort of a mysterious past & not much is known about him, when the town's owner realizes they have outside help, he attempts to bribe him to join his cause, when that fails he then hires a ruthless sherriff & his 6 deputies who uphold whatever law there is to the highest bidder, a sherriff which Eastwood has a past with, but not much is revealed about their past, in which they have a showdown towards the end, this movie has many subplots in it that really work & the look on the shrriff's face when he realizes who he is up against is creepy, I am not sure if Eastwood was trying to make a sequel to "Outlaw of Josey Whales" or what, but it sure plays on that theme as if the sherriff was one he missed in that one, or vice versa, & is better than "Unforgiven" which in some ways could be a sequel to this one, but this one stands out & could be a stand alone movie, it should be noted that Eastwood directed all 3 films, & might have had that intension all along, I used to like "Josey Whales" the best, but this one is the better one I think!!!...more info
  • "...and its rider's name was death"

    The situation is familiar enough, previously dramatized in another film, Shane (1953): A stranger appears and becomes involved with good people who are being tormented by a powerful adversary as they struggle to eke out a living as miners camped along a river. Eastwood has duly acknowledged several similarities with Shane while explaining that he wanted to create his own version and commissioned a script based on that basic situation. As for the film's title, as she was reading the Bible with her mother (a widow, played by Carrie Snodgrass), Megan Wheeler (played by Sydney Penny), comes upon this passage: "And I saw, and behold, a pale horse, and its rider's name was death, and hell followed him." Soon after, a lone horseman (Clint Eastwood) dressed as a preacher, rides into camp. His name is never revealed, nor is his background, but the miners soon realize that the Preacher is probably much handier with a gun than he is with holy scripture. Of course, the confrontation with LaHood and his hired gunmen (led by a man named Stockburn) is inevitable. There is a vague but inescapable implication that the Preacher may have once ridden with Stockburn. There is no doubt that they once knew each other.

    To his credit, Eastwood underplays any Biblical implications. In fact, most of the action occurs slowly. Opportunities to develop a sub plot are rejected, probably because Eastwood wants to sustain the focus on the conflict between decency and mendacity. Although the widow is obviously "taken" with the Preacher and he feels at least some attraction to her (as was also the case with Shane and Marion Starret), the Preacher rides off as the film ends, as does Shane. Hull Barret is Joe Starret's counterpart. Both are willing but neither is equal to the challenge of saving their friends from oppression. Shane and the Preacher become involved because they care about the good folks, of course, but also because (it is implied) their destiny is to confront and eliminate evil, then depart. Stockburn is a contract laborer, as is Jack Wilson in Shane. Literally, a hired gun. Nothing personal, although Stockburn (as portrayed by John Russell) seems to me somewhat world-weary whereas Wilson still seems to enjoy killing whomever he must to complete an assignment.

    One final point: I have admired as well as enjoyed the development of Eastwood's skills as a director over several decades, beginning with Play Misty for Me (1971). I think there is much greater diversity in his selection and presentation of material as a director than there is as an actor. Some have characterized this as a "noir film" and in certain respects it is. The somber tone he establishes and then sustains in Pale Rider (1985) may well have contributed to the effectiveness of a comparable tone in later films, notably Unforgiven (1992). I am eager to see what new challenges he takes on in films yet to be directed but I am equally eager to see relationships of those films with earlier works such as this....more info

  • Adult, Mischevious, Camp, Classic American Western
    I'm tempted to give this paralell-universe "Shane" five stars if only for hired-gun Stockburn's infamous deputies. Six silent men in pale dusters, who throughout never utter a peep, never talk among themselves, never smile, never scowl, never even blink -- it is absolutly classic American Western filmmaking. You laughed at WB Cartoons' spoofs of such melodramatic Wild West moments if you're old enough to remember those.

    So it's campy, but in a great way. In Westerns, Clint Eastwood is a true player, though I think he must have had his toungue in cheek a lot. I love the metaphysical hints in the plot, the flirting with biblical identity, his version of upholding the honor and "code" of the West as a man-of-the-cloth/gunslinger, both of whom bear the Eastwood Curse of always being attractive to women (!) -- it's great stuff! He pushed the envelope in this brazen variation of Shane and although it was made in 1985, I'd say it was really more of a '70s movie in some regards, but that's part of its appeal. Eastwood is a good filmmaker and a tiny bit mischevious.

    It has gratuitously violent gunplay in some scenes, and the manner of the implied sexual attractions is nearly as gratuitous. That drops it a star in my book, as it makes it an awkward film to watch with kids or older folks from a more modest and dignified era. That said, part of the film's appeal for me is that those lustful tuggings were very believable and actually must have been part of the equation in many real-life pioneer situations. There was a time I could have been in Megan's very shoes; teen-age girls could learn something from this movie!

  • Shane its not
    Clint Eastwood needs to be credited for making 2 very important Westerns, especially the first, in The Outlaw Josey Wales and The Unforgiven. Though famous for the spaghetti westerns, filmed in Spain, made by the likes of Dino Delorentis, when Clint turned his own eye to the genre he chose to not only be serious, but to remind us that life in that era was far from glamerous. With that in mind, he took a crack at remaking Shane. Sure, there are some significant differents. Still, the stranger rescuing innocents is right out Shane. I still found this story to be a little TOO cookie cutter. When I first saw Shane, I really wasn't sure our hero was going to win the big duel. In this case, there was no doubt. I recommend this film with the proviso that you don't expect too much....more info
  • "High Plains Drifter" Meets "Shane"
    Clint Eastwood's "Pale Rider" (1985) is an entertaining yet derivative Western that represents the flip side of the actor-director's "High Plains Drifter" - a far-superior effort. Though Eastwood delivers a fine performance as the mysterious Preacher, with good support from Michael Moriarty and Carrie Snodgress, the overall film lacks the dramatic resonance of "The Outlaw Josey Wales" and "Unforgiven." Instead, "Pale Rider" tries to evoke the classic tradition of George Stevens' "Shane" and partially succeeds. The film has some good action sequences, but drags a bit in the midsection.   • Pale Rider blu ray review
    I am a HUGE Clint Eastwood fan and I love all of his movies in any way but Clint on blu ray is a dream come true for all fans. They all havent come out yet but I have the ones that are. It makes an older movie look bran new and the old picture looks completly amazing. I would recommend all of his movies on blu ray cause its like watching a new movie all over again.   • Eastwood's return to the saddle will make your day.
    Made years prior to his classic Unforgiven, Pale Rider offers positive proof that no other contemporary filmmaker understands the mythic texture and rhythm of the American Western better than actor/director Clint Eastwood. Combining elements from Shane and High Plains Drifter, Pale Rider tells the tale of a mysterious gunslinging preacher that comes to the aid of embattled settlers in the Pacific Northwest. While the film does have its weakness, namely too closely resembling superior films, it has its strengths as well, mainly invoking the laconic, rugged individualism that is the hallmark of all great westerns, some rousing actions scenes, and well drawn characters and situations. The religious underpinnings are also of larger interest thanks in part to the screenwriting of Dennis Shyrack and Michael Butler (who used similiar theological symbolism in their scripts for the Eastwood chase thriller The Gauntlet as well as the B-movie level horror show The Car)....more info

  • A somewhat mystic Western with a refreshingly positive story
    Hull Barret (Michael Morairty) is the defacto leader of a group of pan miners dreaming of finding their big nuggets of gold on their tiny stakes. But the powerful Coy LaHood (Richard Dysart) wants to run them off their claims so he can seize them and use his powerful hydraulic mining techniques to get at the gold he is sure is there. His son, Josh (Christopher Penn), runs the day to day operations and uses some of his workers to harass and injure the pan miners so they will give up and move away.

    When Hull takes a risky trip into town to get supplies, some of the LaHood thugs beat him and start to set fire to his wagon, but in comes a stranger that we come to know only as the Preacher (Clint Eastwood) he shows the thugs how to really use a good piece of hickory (an ax handle). The Preacher seems to be interested in helping the pan miners to pull together, find the strength they don't even know they have and stand up for themselves. Yet, he also negotiates a good deal for the pan miners to sell their claims. They reject the offer, in part because they believe the Preacher will fight with (for) them. However, the Preacher disappears. Their courage fails them.

    How all this works out isn't hard to guess, but I will let you watch the film for yourself. There is also a rather uncomfortable love complication with the widow, Sarah Wheeler (Carrie Snodgrass) who is supposedly Hull's woman (they are just living together). She is obviously taken with the strong Preacher over the merely normal Hull. Sarah's daughter Megan (Sydney Penny) has also fallen head over heels for the Preacher and throws herself at him in an acutely painful scene. Again, you can see for yourself how this works out.

    There are some memorably funny scenes. For example, The 7' 2" Richard Kiel plays a LaHood henchman named Club who is sent to intimidate the miners. He approaches the Preacher and Hull who are hammering hard on a boulder that Hull believes is hiding a big nugget of gold. Each blow removes a handful or rock and it will be slow going, but Club takes one of the sledgehammers and splits the boulder with one blow. After the Preacher dispatches with him (to Club's profound respect) attention returns to the boulder. The Preacher adds to his mystic nature (one thread of the story says he is dead) by also splitting the boulder with one blow.

    This is a good movie and very much worth seeing. The performances are all good and the story, for all its Western conventions, has some fresh takes and an interesting story. I particularly liked its positive themes rather than the usual post-Western-Western bleakness. Yes, some of the special effects and props are a bit weak, but who cares. The movie is about the story rather than the visuals.

  • A Good, Though Cliched, Western. 3.5 Stars
    The late 70's-early 80's were not very kind towards westerns, and it was feared that the genre might be gone forever. But then, in 1985, Lawrence Kasdan's masterpiece "Silverado" blazed across the screen, and westerns were back again, unfortuanately for a rather short-lived comeback (until 1994, with the last great western: "Tombstone"). "Silverado" was not alone, however, because that same year Clint Eastwood also returned to the saddle after a nine-year period (his last, "The Outlaw Josey Wales", was back in 1976). And though not among his best, "Plae Rider" makes for worthy entertainment. The story concerns a group of prospectors who are constantly harassed by the neighboring millionare and his thugs, warning the miners to clear out or else. But the prospectors have held strong, though none of them are sure how long they can keep it up. One day, however, a mysterious stranger rides into town (sound familiar?) and decides to help them out. The whole film is basically nothing more than a rehash/merging of "Shane" and "High Plains Drifter" (Eastwood's first directorial western), with Eastwood repeating his signature role (no, not Dirty Harry) of the mysterious gunman without a name. I know that critics have declared Clint Eastwood one of the greatest actors who has ever lived (and I fondly agree), this is getting a little old, isn't think?! I mean, the man has played the part a hundred times over! "A Fistful of Dollars", "For A Few Dollars More", "The Good, the Bad, & the Ugly", "Two Mules For Sister Sara", "High Plains Drifter". . . . . . . the list goes on and on.

    Okay, those were the cons, and now for the pros. However unoriginal the plot is, it has little sprinkles of the supernatural here and there, and the film possesses the dark, errie atmosphere that was found in "High Plains Drifter". And this time, the stranger is a preacher (or claims to be). And, like Eastwood's first western, you never really can tell: is the stranger just an ordinary man out for revenge, or is he a shadow of the past from beyond the grave? Whatever your opinion on it, the whole feel of it is really cool. As usual, Clint is at his squint-eyed best, and the rest of the cast does an overall great job as well. It's really nice to see John Russell ("Rio Bravo") back in a western again. Just that whole thing with the Preacher and the teenage girl I found weird, out of place, and simply pointless. The climactic showdown holds some suspense, but it's nothing to get excited about.

    "Pale Rider" has been placed under the awesome Clint Eastwood Collection brand of DVD's. But it's a bit of a disappointment, especially after buying/viewing the CEC of "The Outlaw Josey Wales". While that western received a seamless remastering job as well as special features worthy of the title Special or Collector's Edition, this DVD's picture and sound quality are only passable. It's a bit blury, and the darks (especially during the night scenes) seem more blue than black. And all you get is production notes and a trailer. Oh well; I guess the better the movie, the better the DVD treatment.

    Conclusion: If you're an Eastwood fan, buy it. If you're partial to originality, go get "Shane" or "High Plains Drifter" instead....more info

  • Clint as avenging angel
  • Pale Rider - Melodramatic but very powerful!
    After almost a full decade away from the western genre, Clint Eastwood was presented with the script for this melodramatic but very powerful western. Taking up his usual roles as producer, director and of course star, Eastwood handles each role admirably and ultimately put a classic western on the silver screen and the home theater screen. Of particular note is the score for the film, which but for the beginning and the end of the film is almost nonexistent but very ominous and powerful when present.

    The premise:

    Welcome to Carbon Creek California where a group of tin pan miners are demoralized and ready to quit due to the efforts of mining boss Coy LaHood (Richard Dysart) and his men. In what can only be described as prophetic, after the opening sequence, young Megan (Sydney Penny) is burying her dog, praying for a miracle and we see the Preacher (Clint Eastwood) riding into town. We then see Hull Barret (Michael Moriarty) riding into town despite warnings about what happened to him the last time he went there. In classic Eastwood style, Barret is being beaten brutally in the middle of town and Eastwood as the stranger saves the day. What follows may not be Eastwood's best western of his career but it certainly has a very intriguing and poignant plot that is quite memorable.

    I would highly recommend this film to die hard Eastwood fans or the casual western fan as I believe you will find yourself pleasantly surprised by this film. {ssintrepid}

  • Not Clint's best, but good.
    If you're a Clint Eastwood fan, I'd recommend viewing this movie. If you like movies that are true-to-life and that make some sort of statement, this isn't one I'd recommend.

    The plot is well developed, although it's the usual David vs. Goliath story. John Russell gives an excellent performance as Marshall Stockburn, a man who you'll love to hate when the movie is over. Richard Dysart also does a nice job as the wealthy miner Coy LaHood, bringing out the snobbishness and arrogance of 19th Century aristocrats very well.

    Eastwood gives his usual performance as the "bad" good guy. This time Clint Eastwood plays a man known only as "Preacher", descriptive only of his name, certainly not of his profession. I'd compare "Preacher" to Robin Hood, robbing from the rich (Dysart) and giving back to the poor (Michael Moriarty and others). If you can handle a little blood and violence, this is a very watchable film, though it's not Eastwood's best, and it's not something I'd let a five-year-old watch....more info

  • Good vs. Evil, with a twist!
    Let's face it, nearly all Westerns are morality plays about good vs. evil, you know, the "good guys" verses the "bad guys." The challenge for film makers is how to package this morality play in a new, refreshing, and interesting way. Pale Rider succeeds in doing this in several ways. First, the scenery and cinematography are stunning--the American West has spectacular vistas, and this movie takes full advantage (check the credits for site locations, you may want to visit them someday). Secondly, the characters are well developed--you cheer for the good guys and loathe the bad ones. The mining camp occupants being the good guys are here depicted as clean, decent, moral, family types (though in reality, mining camps were probably full of greedy crooks, gamblers, whoremongers, and drunkards). The bad guys are the greedy, corporate miners led by LaHood and his employees, plus the hired guns he employs to drive out the poor, subsistence mining camp families. Enhanced by elements of answered prayer, love triangles (or in this case, a love quadrangle), coming of age innocence in a young girl, rescue missions, and supernatural overtones, Pale Rider brilliantly weaves together all these elements leading to a spectacular reconing as the Preacher turned gunslinger strikes out to obtain justice for all. "Preacher...we all love you Preacher....I love you....Thank you....Goodbye." The ending just about brings tears to your eyes. If only we all had such an advocate in real life....more info
