Product Description

Carbon monoxide (CO) is the leading cause of accidental poisoning deaths in America, yet many people don't know they are suffering from CO poisoning until its too late. Since symptoms of CO poisoning are like the flu, you might not even know you're in danger at first. That's why a carbon monoxide alarm is an excellent way to protect your family. It can detect the CO you can't see, smell or taste in the air.

The First Alert GCO1CN combination explosive gas and carbon monoxide alarm uses an electrochemical carbon monoxide sensor-the most accurate technology available. It also detects natural gas, methane gas, and propane gas. Installation is as simple as plugging it in to any wall outlet or mounting it above an outlet and plugging in the higher line cord. Its easy-to-read large digital display gives you a clear readout of current hazard and levels. A peak level button alerts you to the highest level of explosive gas or carbon monoxide detected. The alarm includes a battery back-up giving you peace of mind in a power outage. The test/silence button both silences a non-threatening alarm or low battery warning and allows you to test the unit's functionality. The unit monitors and alarms if carbon monoxide or explosive gas levels persist sounding a loud 85-decibel horn. A low battery signal alerts you to replace the 9-volt battery (included). UL listed. --Bree Norlander

Customer Reviews:

  • Not for the bedroom!
We bought this for our master bedroom. Ours had a "convenient" testing function -- you could use your TV remote control to ensure the alarm was still operational. Unfortunately, it was pretty easy for us to set off the alarm by mistake using the remote...not so pleasant during late night TV viewing! I'm not sure if the fault was the alarm's or the remote's, but certainly our combination was dreadful....more info
  • A must have
Product is easily installed. A must have for any home with natural gas of propane....more info
  • False Alarms
Placed the product on the wall (they recommend placing higher for the Natural Gas detection) and randomly about once a day mid-evening the alarm goes off. Initially I got up to press the reset button, then realized that the alarm would go off for about 10 seconds and reset itself. Doesn't seem like it's really detecting anything......more info
  • First Alert GC01CN Plug In Combonation Explosive Gas/Carbon Monoxide Alarm with Battery Back Up
I chose this product because I wanted to have a battery back up for the alarm in case of an electrical failure. I was surprised that the battery that came with the product had expired before the date of manufacture of the product. Also, the door on the unit does not completely line up in order to completely close. When I called about these two issues, they did not offer to send another battery and told me as long as the door goes down, it's good enough. So, I guess the only thing I should be concerned with is that the alarm works when necessary -- and, hopefully, it will. ...more info
  • Good protection!
We live offgrid, and use propane for cooking, refrigeration, water heating, clothes drying, and generator. We had a propane leak, and this unit notified us before we could smell it. It also notified us of a CO2 issue when the generator vent was closed off. Well worth the money. Can't put a price on your families life!

  • Works GREAT and has battery backup
Better safe than sorry. Best price I could find anywhere including
on e-Bay. We have all gas appliances, furnace, hot water tank, and clothes dryer so have one in the washroom/furnace room and another in the kitchen.
Had a Kidde brand before I bought the First Alert and it was constantly going off with false detections which I had verified by my gas company.
Both of the First Alerts work just fine.
