About Utility Benches
Despite the competition from trendy new fitness inventions, free-weight lifting continues to be a popular option for home strength training. Free weights offer a special benefit in strength training because they promote quicker strength gains. Free weights also work a larger number of muscles than resistance machines, which tend to focus on isolated muscles.

Specially-designed adjustable pads, grips, and bars help limit and guide movements to minimize the possibility of muscle or joint damage. Plus, from a single utility bench, a vast number of exercises can be performed. Whether it is focusing on the abdomen, arms, chest, or any other muscle group, a utility bench can help you maximize your strength training goals while minimizing your risk of personal injury.

Customer Reviews:

This item is of very high quality and the price was very reasonable. I could not have made a better choice....more info
  • High Quality/Reasonable Price
This bench is quite versatile and very well-built. It is perfect for dumbbell exercises. The bench was assembled in three simple steps and had no missing parts. The manual was clearly written in proper English. Overall I am very impressed....more info
  • Bowflex SelectTech 3.1 Weight Bench
This is a very nice bench that I bought to go with my new Bowflex SelectTech Dumbbells. A perfect match for working out with hand weights...more info
  • Great Bench
Can't say enough about the 5.1 bench. It is comfortable and moves into five great positions for all the excercises you need. Don't much care for the dumbbells but love the bench. The best on the market!...more info
  • home gym addition
I purchased this to go along with the bowflex adjustable dumbbells. It makes a perfect match. The bench is more than enough for home use. It has a clean look to it and feels very stable. The 4 positions are perfect for my needs....more info
  • NIce but not great
nice bench, more than adequate for light use, and probably OK for medium use. Not gym quality or suitable for heavy use (multiple users every day). Still, good bang for the buck!...more info
  • Well-constructed and great value
This is a very nice bench by any standards and as other reviews mention, it was very easy to put together. The instructions are well-written, the diagrams clear and the whole thing is well-engineered and heavy duty construction. The manual says it can hold a 300lb. person plus 300lbs. or weight and I don't doubt that at all. It is also very easy to adjust and doesn't have a lot of little parts. It took me about 50 minutes to assemble it and I went very slowly.

It is true that there are only four positions you can use on this bench, but for most people that is plenty. Also, it is a perfect product to use with a dumbbell workout. If you go this route, I recommend either Pair of Personal PowerBlock Adjustable Dumbbells - 5-45 Pounds in 5 Pound Increments or PowerBlock SportBlock Dumbbell Set. These adjustable dumbbells are rugged, less expensive than other brands and the safest that I know of.

Some other details about the bench... the material is a medium thick vinyl and mine came with a 1 inch tear. I did not consult customer support yet, but I will update this review to reflect my experience of them when I do. I think a better material and padding would improve the product overall, but at this price point I think it's plenty rugged.

If you get this bench, you can eventually get a power rack that can be used with your bench and as a squat/deadlift rack. One that I like is Phys-x Half Rack 10418, but you there are others depending upon your needs.

If you are new (or old) to this type of training, I recommend Build Muscle Lose Fat Look Great: Everything You Need to Know to Transform Your Body and Starting Strength. These are probably the ONLY two books most people will ever need on strength training, building mass, etc. They are BOTH dense with great information systematically laid out. I have other suggestions on my listmania lists, check my profile if you are interested. I also reviewed most of the adjustable dumbells on available on here....more info
  • great bench for dumbbell workouts
This is my first bench for dumbbell exercises. It's a great buy for the price. Works nicely, very sturdy, and very reliable. I give it 4 out of 5 stars simply because the gap between the bottom seat and the top bench is a bit too much for my liking. Recommended...more info
  • Nicely Built and Fast Assembly! ~ Fast Delivery Too!
First of all I would like to say that Amazon has once again shipped me my purchase in record breaking speed!

I previously purchased the Weider Pro 230 and found it to be an awkward to use bench. You could never set it up to be a flat bench so I returned it to Sears and purchased this Bowflex 3.1 Bench. A little more money but well worth it. It is a heavier bench that sits sturdy and solid. Easy to assemble and adjust for different angles.

I would absolutely recommend this bench!...more info
  • Very nice bench
Ok first of all I think if you just look at the picture you can tell this is not a sit up bench.
This is a dumbbell workout bench!
It is a very well made sturdy bench that is perfect for dumbbell workouts.
I bought mine off the net used for $50 from someone who bought it and then figured out weights are heavy. :)

  • Nice Solid Bench
This is a nice solid adjustable bench. It is put together well and functions good for doing free weight workouts.

My only complaint is the little black plastic pieces on the ends of the support beam want to fall off. Other than that this is a great bench.

  • Very useful utility bench
The Bowflex 3.1 is very useful, easy to adjust, lightweight and heavy duty. I've had this bench for over a month now and have had no problems what so ever. It was very easy to assemble and I have used it with my power rack ever since. Very sturdy. Great product!...more info
  • I should have ordered the 5.1 model
I wasn't trying to break the bank when I decided to order my Selecttech setup. I went cheap on the bench and now wish I had gotten the 5.1 one. This isn't a bad bench, infact it's sturdy and easy to adjust, but the 5.1 offers extra positions, and not just frivolous ones. a 90 degree would be perfect for some of the presses I do. I think aside from the 2 extra inclines you can use with the 5.1 they are identical. I don't need the 2, but it would be nice as it could give me more work out options.

But this is well built and will serve it's purpose, I'm sure you can get better benches for cheaper elsewhere, but these go well with the Selecttech's and the Stand I bought. Overall I'm happy with all 3....more info
  • Pricy, but Great Value
I decided recently to get back in shape. I changed my diet, and began an exercise program. I looked into buying a Bowflex home gym, but decided against it after trying out one in a retail outlet. Instead I chose the Bowflex SelechTech dumbells and this bench. I'm very happy with my choice.

The bench itself if very well built, comparable to what you find in expensive gyms. I chose the 3.1 over the 5.1 because I required an adjustable bench, and the four positions provided with the 3.1 were plenty. No regrets there. Another nice feature of this bench is the foot rest. I use this for sit ups on the bench, and it works very well.

It took me about 45 minutes to assemble. The directions were easy to understand. It's a great combination with the Bowflex SelecTech dumbells, allowing for a very complete home workout. Be careful on price, however, as local retailers often offer these items at a discount. I purchased the 3.1 Bowflex bench at about 65% of the price now displayed on Amazon (with tax, unfortunately, but without the shipping costs). If you decide to buy on Amazon, wait until it's offered at a discount, or Amazon decides to cover shipping costs.

All in all, a great addition to the home gym. Highly recommended....more info
  • Superb Bench!!!!!!!!
I think that the Bowflex 3.1 bench is a superb piece of equipment, it is quite sturdy, holds up well, and is strong with a decent amount of ways to work out that will benefit the user in a lot of ways!!!!!!!!!Also mind you this is not a kids review, i clicked the wrong button, i am 47 yrs of age!...more info
  • Not for sit ups
This bench is very sturdy and would be good for free weight workouts. I bought it to do sit ups and it just doesn't work. The leg hold down brace is positioned awkwardly and because the back support declines but the bottom support doesn't you end up in between the two pieces. Bowflex doesn't offer any optional hold down braces for this bench. I've used much cheaper benches with better results. I bought this one because of the Bowflex name and the ratings about how sturdy the bench was....more info
  • Adjustable bench
This bench is solid. The only thing negative would be that it is slipery. You really need to attach the the leg support. The support came with my bench. I do recommend this product. The adjustable positions cover all the lifting positions I need....more info
  • Perfect Bench for Basic Weightlifting
I considered this bench among many others and chose it for it's sturdy, attractive design and the reasonable price tag. There aren't many features of this bench other than what you see; in fact, there probably aren't any beyond what is shown. I've purchased other benches in the past with a more abundant array of features, and I have been let down by both their effectiveness and the weak design of the bench itself. It almost seems like you've got to be willing to sacrifice the quality of the bench in order to gain some of these extra features. I prefer to have a solid bench with less features, and thus I chose this model, and have been very satisfied by doing so.

The incline and decline feature is VERY simple and I prefer it over to retractable pin style of incline/decline that is common in many other benches. Assembly was easy and seemingly impossible to do incorrectly, and the end result really does look stunning. I have used this bench for a variety of dumbbell exercises and stretches and have not run into any problems or shortcomings. The leg brace is a nice substitution for an inclining seat, though in all honesty I would probably prefer the seat to have some movement.

Overall, I am very satisfied and I highly recommend this product for anyone looking to do basic to moderate exercise from home....more info
  • 4 and 1/2 stars
I love this bench. It suits my needs and works well. If it had one more position between the 1/2 way point and straight up it would be perfect. Since I bought it used at a great price it works for me. Workmanship is better than I thought at first...more info
  • Perfect For Us!
I just got finished assembling the Bowflex 3.1 Adjustable Bench and came away impressed with both the ease of assembly and great construction. I am a 61-year old lady and I had it together in about 45 minutes with no outside help. Instructions were detailed, holes were all pre-drilled in the correct places, and critical-sized Allen wrenches were included in the hardware package. It was boxed well, and there were no tears in the vinyl cover, as other reviews have mentioned, although a small area on the red portion of the cushion was flattened and "smushed" and not sure if this will work out with time. The box arrived with minimal damage in record time (4 shipping days) in time to have a bow on it for Christmas.
The bench has plenty of adjustment for the type of dumbell exercises that we plan on and appears exceptionally well-made. The rollers on the base make it easy to move around and the bench is very stable. I am pleased with all aspects of this purchase. The price with free shipping from Amazon was less expensive than the "on-sale price" from our local big box sporting goods store, even without figuring in sales tax and a 30 mile round-trip to go pick it up....more info
