About Utility Benches
Despite the competition from trendy new fitness inventions, free-weight lifting continues to be a popular option for home strength training. Free weights offer a special benefit in strength training because they promote quicker strength gains. Free weights also work a larger number of muscles than resistance machines, which tend to focus on isolated muscles.

Specially-designed adjustable pads, grips, and bars help limit and guide movements to minimize the possibility of muscle or joint damage. Plus, from a single utility bench, a vast number of exercises can be performed. Whether it is focusing on the abdomen, arms, chest, or any other muscle group, a utility bench can help you maximize your strength training goals while minimizing your risk of personal injury.

Customer Reviews:

  • Sturdy bench for home use
Having owned and consistently used this bench for over two years, it's about time I reviewed it.

I also have the matching SelectTech dumbbell set, and use them with the bench religiously 3 to 4 times a week. The bench has held up well, showing few signs of wear.

Initially assembly was straight-forward, but not painless. The hole tolerances and placement weren't exact, so getting everything together was a little time consuming.

Once together, as others have mentioned, it has a wide variety of bench and leg adjustments that work well. The vinyl covering looks brand new still. Once issue I came across was the two rubber end caps on the support brace for the incline. They quickly fell off, and I've had to re-glue them a few times. An easy fix.

The gap where the bench folds can be somewhat irritating, but I actually just use a small hand-towel rolled up and wedged in there for flat and slight incline exercises, and that makes it much more comfortable.

Everything else has held up well, the vinyl, foam, metal, welds, etc. still look fine.

While there is a premium cost associated with the Bowflex name, this is still a good buy. I would definitely purchase it again, and would recommend it for home use.

  • High Quality!
This item arrived within 2 days. It was easy to assemble. Attractive addition to my home gym. Just what I needed!...more info
  • Awesome
This bench is great- very sturdy, does what its supposed to. Doesnt feel flimsy in anyway. One piece of advice, when you assemble, the fron two bolts that connect the front of the stand (they are the 3 inch bolts, the longest ones their are only two), once you put them through and screw on the nut, you cant tighten it any further- i thought there was something wrong with it or i needed a ratchet or a different wrench, but that is the way it is supposed to be- it seems loose, but it doesnt matter as long as the bolt is in there (i verified this with bowflex cust service, who was awesome btw....
    Very pleased....thanks! ...more info
  • Great bench, fully adjustable
This is a great bench for the home gym. It is fully adjustable and even does decline. It is comfortable, well made, and even has wheels on one end for easy movement around your workout space. I bought mine with a set of 1090 dumbbells, including the stand, and everything goes well together....more info
  • Great bench
It took less than 30 minutes from opening the box until I had it all put together. There is a gap between the seat pad and the back pad and it is there to allow adjustment of the back pad. It has several settings to let you maximize your workout. The wheels are a bit of an issue, you do have to raise the bench up quite a bit to engage them....more info
  • bowflex selecttech bench
This bench is basic but does all I need. Both the seat and the back are adjustable with the back going from from vertical to past horizonal (so that your head is lower than your feet. It is plenty wide which is a complaint about some benchs. It is heavy enough to be stable, but not difficult to move with the built in wheels. I would recommend this bench as a good bargain and a good complement to any home gym if you use weights....more info
  • Overall, very good bench
This is a solid, sturdy and versatile bench that so far has been worth the money spent. The number of adjustable positions makes it a better fit for me than the 3.1. The only complaint that I have is that it takes up a lot of room. It would be nice if it could fold up against the wall to conserve space. ...more info
  • awesome bench
I bought this bench for its adjustability and solid construction. It lends itself well to situps when in its negative angle setting and you can focus on different upper body muscles with the various positive angled settings. Easy to put together with included directions, if one needs them....more info
  • Bowflex 5.1 bench
Just received this within 3 days of ordering it, which included the weekend. I expected to see it in about a week so I was surprised that it was delivered so quickly. The box was in terrible shape and my first instinct was that there would be parts missing. But after I opened the box and did an inventory, all necessary parts were there. It took me about 30 minutes to assemble after reading the instructions and grabbing my tool box. The only thing I needed was a 1/2 " socket and a large screwdriver to spread a bar that needed a little coaxing to insert a bolt. Other than that, it was a breeze. The overall quality is excellent. Very sturdy and easy to incline or decline the backrest. I did a series of crunches first and it was effective in use and very stable. Great deal and prompt shipping. Can't ask for much more. Hope this helps. ...more info
  • Sturdy and well built for the price
This bench is well built for the price, but could have been a bit better. The wheels, as stated in other reviews, are largely useless as you have to have it almost perpendicular to the floor to use them. The bench does not wobble even when I use my Selecttech 1090 dumbells (I am 200lbs plus the 180lb for the dumbells). Using the decline bench is great for your chest and is something you may not even be able to do at your gym....more info
  • The thing is not sturdy!
The thing is not sturdy and feels cheap. It wobbles over time because of the poor design...where the various level notches are placed.

I would not recommend. I only purchased this b/c I was buying the adjustable dumbbells at the same time.

The customer service and warranty are also worthless. Spend your money elsewhere.

I replaced with far superior bench that was half the price....more info
  • Very good all-purpose bench
I purchased this bench with the intention of being able to complete a solid dumbell workout on those days that I could not get to my local gym. The assembly instructions are clear (which apparently is an improvement). The bench is easily assembled in about an hour. The construction is solid and there is no significant wobble. Position adjustments are quick. Although the gap between the butt and back pad bothers some people, it does not seem to be a major issue with me. As others have mentioned, the bench does not move on its roller wheels very well. All in all, the quality of this bench is comparable to what one would find in most fitness centers....more info
  • Watch out for FedEx shipping on this item
I was on vacation when someone at my company accepted the shipment - I would not have accepted the item from FedEx. The package was very beat-up. Internal components had come through the cardboard in four places. The strapping that was left was loose because it had cut deeply into the cardboard. There were 11 external puncture places in the package and part of the cardboard had been ripped away exposing the interior of the package. Be very wary of FedEx on this unit because it is so heavy and they are so rough.
Now the good news - besides some minor marks on the plastic bench parts, everything else looks great. Assembly went well and the unit is solid. ...more info
  • Bowflex SelectTech 5.1 Bench
I would give kudos to this fine consumer product for the home gym. It is nice and very adjustable. But what good is it for an outstanding product do be damaged time and time again via shipping. For me 3 times. This is not due to the quality of the bench nor the shipper, but the quality of the box. It is quite sub-par. It is flimsy and does not take very much to rip open the box and expose the contents. It also does not keep the contents stationary. I find it so hard to believe that such a good quality product and the reputation of such a company to put it in a non-sturdy box so that it can be damaged so easily. When Bowflex decides to get off of its duff, and produce a higher quality and sturdier shipping box, then I will be the first inline to purchase this product. Until then I will look at other alternatives. Because what good is it if parts are missing, or if the structure is heavily damaged....more info
  • Fashion Worthy but not worth the Cash
Looks good but cost way too much! Other benches with the same features for less is what I would buy the next time. ...more info
  • Wobblefest & injury waiting to happen...
I would hope that this is specific to the bench I received, but I wouldn't know as Bowflex has yet to respond to my email (over 1 week ago) telling them about it and asking for how to fix.

Anyway, I assembled the bench and found it to be a total wobblefest - not in terms of the legs which I assembled, but the upper bench frame itself, which comes pre-assembled. I figured the factory must not have tightened it properly, so I tried to do it..only to find that the screws used are a slip type that do not allow any tightening...so they just keep spinning with no effect on stability/tightness.

This thing is an injury waiting to happen - no one in their right mind would use any kind of weight on this bench or else risk ligament injury due to a sudden shift while using it.

I have had many benches, all have been solid, this is by far and away the worst bench I have ever seen. I will post a video review shortly to 'show' how bad it is if Bowflex keeps refusing to even reply to my request for a way to fix or have it replaced.

  • Solid...but
This bench is a nice solid bench, but...

    1) The plastic covers on the bottom end of the adjustment bar don't stay on. One of mine fell off after a couple days, only then to be eaten by the dog. No big deal, I took the other one off and it works fine, but a rubber end or glue would have fixed that problem.

    2) The bigger issue for me is the front feet (the bar that stablizes the front of the bench). Maybe it's my personal preference, but that bar sits right where my natural "drop the dumbells" motion ends. It's just a personal preference of mine, after being used to gym benches without the front wide foot.

    3) The bench is easily adjustable, but the one decline setting is not really much of a decline.

    4) The gap between the back and butt pads seems a bit excessive. If you keep the foot bar on, your backside inconveniently sits right in the pad gap, not exactly comfortable.

    5) I will add a positive, the head cushion is separate from the back cushion, so when the time comes where the cushions start cracking (usually the head starts first), it looks like all you would have to do is replace the head cushion.

Again, these are just my personal thoughts on the bench as a long time gym member, and my first go-round with setting up my home gym. Next time around I'll pay closer attention to these things. ...more info
