Network connections are the backbone of business connections. Cisco Small Business RV042 Virtual Private Networking (VPN) Router supports up to four wired and 50 off-site connections. The latter allows users to connect into your network with secure access to your files and intranet. The RV042 comes with dual Internet ports that can serve as a failsafe system for 24/7 network uptime, or as a secondary connection to a separate Internet provider. Whether they're used for backup or speed boosting, the router's networking hardware will keep bottlenecks away from your network, period. 10/100 Ethernet switch to connect four PCs directly, or you can connect more hubs and switches to create as big a network as you need. The Virtual Private Network (VPN) capability creates encrypted "tunnels" through the Internet, allowing up to 30 remote office or traveling users to securely connect into your office network from off-site. Users connecting through a VPN tunnel are attached to your company's network - with secure access to files, e-mail, and your intranet - just as if they were in the building. You can also use the VPN capability to allow users on your small office network to securely connect out to a corporate network. The 10/100 4-Port VPN Router can serve as a DHCP Server, and has a powerful SPI firewall to protect your PCs against intruders and most known Internet attacks. It can be configured to filter internal users' access to the Internet, and has IP address filtering so you can specify exactly who has access to your network. Configuration is a snap with the web browser-based configuration utility. As the heart of your small office network, the connection-redundant Linksys 10/100 4-Port VPN Router gives you the connection reliability your business needs.

- Router Works Great
Received in New condition and in timely manner. Put in place of old exact one and been working ever since. I use it at a Dentist office which allows camera surveillance to travel through and open port. I would recommend this product...more info
- Great VPN Router
This device was brought to provide NAT Firewall and VPN function for our small office of 20 users, and I would have to say, it worked pretty well for our environment. The setup and user interface is typical Linksys, not complicated and very flexible.
The VPN setup can be very tough to configure, but once get it going, you'll find it extremely robust. Although other VPN router might have easier VPN configurations, the drawback of course is that those units are not as flexible and do not perform nearly as well as this unit.
An advice, always keep the device firmware up to date, a lot of issues reported in the forum were fixed in the latest firmware. The newest firmware now supports Custom DNS from DynDns.org in Dynamic DNS which was notable.
Many complain about VPN connection with XP is complicated and difficult to configured, RV042 also provide PPTP now, which I found extremely convenient, users can create PPTP client using XP PPTP client to establish IPSec connection with RV042 without the complicated XP IPSec setup.
Overall, great product, I highly recommend to Small Businesses with a good network admin....more info
I had an urgent project that needed the cysco system, I must tell you that it worked wonderfully!!!!...more info
- Must Upgrade Firmware
To avoid complete frustration and most importantly avoid Linksys's terrible support. Make sure you upgrade the firmware to ver. 18.104.22.168. This fixes the problem of every 2-4 minutes QuickVPN disconnects. One other thing to be aware of, I have yet to get XBOX live to work through it. I am pretty sure it has something to do with the way it handles ICMP. ...more info
- Terrible Experience
I don't usually post negative comments, but this experience has been so bad that I have to warn others. 2 weeks trying to get this RV042 to work right and Linksys tech support has been the worst I've ever encountered. 4 calls and 4 chat sessions, each time they were just wasted time. At best, it works intermittantly for a few minutes, then hangs. I'm returning mine and looking for something else. Too bad for Linksys, they used to be a good company.
UPDATE: 12/11/2006 - We finally tried using the PTPP server option with only the native Windows client and it worked. Don't use the Linksys VPN client software with it. I think that was part of the problem. This way seems to be working much better....more info
- Would not buy
I purchased this product and the first two were defective. I had to pay for the shipping back to Linksys, they refused to pay it. After dealing with their lame tech support overseas for almost a month I finely spoke with someone in tech support here in the United States. The bottom line is in a month and a half no one at Linksys can make the thing work period. They refuse to refund your money even though their own tech support cannot create a VPN tunnel with the device. Linksys used to be an awesome company to do business with but I am done. I am network +, A+ and a MCP. I am done with Linksys and will be selling this product online to try and recoup some of my losses....more info
- Complete rubbish, do not buy
Quite simply, this product does not work as advertised. We upgraded from a previous Linksys product to this router purely for VPN capability.
VPN on this product does not work - I repeat, it DOES NOT WORK. If you expect VPN, buy another product.
I've spent 20+ hours working with Linksys and still do not have a workable VPN solution. Linksys has:
-asked me to make scores of shot-in-the-dark changes, none of which fixed my problem
-sent me 4 different firmware versions (2 of them beta), all of which slightly changed the problem without fixing the problem.
-asked me to diable the firewall in an attempt to fix VPN (this is like taking your car to the dealer with a broken engine and them removing the transmission as a solution).
-asked me if (this is the best) I have tried any of the other RV-series routers to see if they work. (honestly, they asked me this -- Sir, could you please purchase one of our other, more expensive routers and see if it works?)
Do not buy this product!!!
- I should have read the reviews
I sent this unit back and got the RV082 which works fine.
The QuickVPN refused to work with this unit and LinkSys was no help.
It does not support the Native VPN Client in XP either.
I got the RV082 and use the Native XP VPN client. No extra software and works like a charm.
- Avoid if you need VPN and where is the value for money?
Used the unit in a small office with 50 users.
First the good.
- Easy to set up
- Reliable firewall and router
- keywords used for internet blocking of web sites
-VPN does not work properly. Wasted weeks on this. Tried the cisco/Linksys software and it was useless. Also only supports 5 users when using PPTP. Continual issues with unreliable results.
-When the battery dies you need to replace the unit.
-Cannot block messenger apps
In the end I switched to m0n0wall for the firewall. Installing it onto a retired NT4 box. Removed the hard drive and booted from the CD ISO image. Config saves onto a floppy. Felt good going "green" by resurrecting this old box.
For the VPN and content filtering i am still looking. M0n0wall allows a lot more VPN clients than the RV042 but not intuitive to set up. M0n0 also has graphs of through put an CPU usage.Have used OpenVPN for IPSEC and works more reliably than the RV042 for VPN. While these two options take longer to set up than the RV042 they are FREE.
For a product I pay for I want:
-Ease of set up.
-Trouble free VPN set up
-No restriction on VPN connects.
-Decent monitoring and logging tools.
-Ability to KILL IM and Torrent traffic, or at least capture and log IM traffic to deter staff goofing off
- Avoid this router at all costs
The router has an excellent feature set but it is plagued with problems. The main problem that I have (aside from the awful Linksys technical support in India) is the WAN performance. I tried to tweak the router's MTU setting, re-flash the firmware, change Ethernet cables, disable the firewall, etc., etc. to make it work with my cable modem, but nothing seems to help.
I get decent ping times when testing my connection but download speeds are horrible. Typically downloads begin at 200k/s then immediately slow to 21k/s.
After spending 4 hours on the phone with technical support the technician told me to return the router. Amazon gladly took the router back and even sent me a replacement via 2-day shipping!
The replacement router has the EXACT same problem but Linksys has no clue about what might be wrong...
Sorry Amazon but this one is coming back too!
*By the way, I am a network admin so I am pretty familiar with networking.*...more info
- Stable and trouble-free for our purposes
We used this router to connect up 3 client branch offices on different subnets, with permanent IPSec tunnels. Keep in mind that you may have to tweak the MTU values a little to get it to be stable (impt, if you are hooking up distant or very different networks). This setup works very well.
If however, you are counting on using the Linksys-provided Quick VPN client extensively, or planning to support many roadwarrior clients with it, then you are probably better off going elsewhere. On testing the client (somewhat throughly) we saw some flaky, non-repeatable behaviour. Not my primary need so didn't try to probe further. So YMMV on that.

- VPN Router
The Router was easy to install. I was able to set up the VPN PPTP connection pretty easy. I am still trying to set up the VPN tunnels with little success. I found that the VPN connection may not work if you have a Linksys WRT54G at the outgoing side of the VPN. I had to change out this router to get the VPN's to connect. There not as easy to set up as they say....more info
