Customer Reviews:

  • Motorola SBG 900
Excellent product, great speed and OK to install. replaces both modem and separate router, convenient to use just one item to perform both purposes. I don;t understand why other manufacturers don't do the same and combine products, you cant use one without the other so why not just combine. The SBG 900 is a smart choice to simplify, combine and improve speed and access.

  • Easy installation, great performance
This is my fist foray into wireless networking and I simply followed the suggestions of other reviewers in regards to being a Comcast customer, called them up with MAC ID and it went through without a glitch and I returned my rental modem the same evening.

Getting to setting up my own secure networking profile, I encountered minor difficulties which were easily remedied by calling Motorola, unlike some of the reviews I saw here, our tech was local (if you catch my drift, which nowadays is rare) and helpful, shared a few tips with me on how to understand the settings under my networking profile.

For ease of use, top of the line security protocols and consistency in signal strength around the home and even on separate floors, my signals never varies lower than 84%-97%. I recommend highly in my humble opinion....more info
  • Plug and Play functionality
I was eagerly awaiting the end of the evil clearwire contract so I could switch over to comcast's higher speed connection. All I had to do to start is plug in the modem and call comcast. After all the lights were solid I was connected. Wheee!!...more info
  • So far so good!
Easy to set up and so far no issues whatsoever (knock on wood). So much nicer not having a cable modem plus a wireless router....more info
  • Works Fine - watch out for 2.4 Ghz phone interference
I've had this modem/wireless router for about a month - it was easy to set up - i did call the cable provder to give them the mac ID, then i just turned it on and let my computer search for it - easy. I did not use the enclosed software cd. In fact, I found it to be worthless.

I thought, for a few weeks, it was faulty because it seemed to cut out randomly. Then i figured out that whenever the 2.4 ghz wirelss phone received a call it would cut the connection from the router - i just nixed the phone (it only is a tool for phone spammers anyway!). Now it's pretty much flawless.

Bear that in mind, about the 2.4 ghz phone. You might have to make a work around to fix that. Perhaps some smart person out there has already figured out a way around this (other than chucking the phone).

Another note - this modem is really fast - at least compared to the crummy one i had before. My whole reason for getting a better modem/wireless router was for the Netflix/Xbox streaming movie watching application. It works very well for that - flawless playback of high def movies through netflix/x box. Great success! (Works very well with x box live also)....more info
  • not compatible with xbox live gold
    got it yesterday from amazon.

it didn't work right out of the box, but a couple calls to comcast tech support at got me going.

i set it up via wired connection to my vista laptop; then i unplugged the wire and tested the whole house: vista laptop, iMac, hp network printer, and iPhone are all connecting wirelessly. no problems except for xbox live.

to the best of my knowledge, it is not compatible with xbox live gold because you can't configure the NAT for uPNP.

out of the box you won't even get to xbox live silver until you type into your browser and then under gateway/lan/DHCP config: change iMTU to 1500 (the default from Motorola is zero).

this is good enough for me so that i can download demos and game updates, but if you want xbox live gold then i think it requires a wired router to plug in between the SBG900 and the Xbox360? (i haven't comfirmed it but says you need a static IP and the router would give you that without screwing up the rest of the home network:

so overall it's a stable and fast cable modem!! but i am taking a star away because of the extreme geek headache it gave me while i spent a couple days trying to get my xbox to connect =(

  • Satisfied Customer of the SBG900
This product installed without any issues. The SBG900 was recommended to me by COMCAST 2nd tier technical staff. After installation the product performed as expected.

Unfortunately, I had to switch to COMCAST Business because of my Vonage phone service and personal mail servers not being able to work properly with COMCAST residential. As a result, COMCAST provides their own router and I require a wireless Access Point. Motorola does not offer a wireless Access point. The best solution is a NETGEAR WPN802 v2. This works great as well for those that run into the same problem....more info
  • No problems with Gateway
While I have never had a cable modem, or a router, before, I purchased this one because of the good reviews I had read about it. Even the cable guy was impressed, when he came to hook up my high speed, which I took for a good sign. I have had high speed internet for a couple of weeks, now, and I have had some problems, but they are caused by Cox Cable, not by my Motorola SURFboard. I haven't even had to read the booklet that came with it, because I've had no problems with it.
I'm not a techniphobe, but I don't understand a lot of the new products and features that are available for use anymore, however, I would recommend purchasing this modem, any day....more info
  • Wireless Surfboard
I have had this modem for a month. It seems to work good and have the range I need. Was easy to set up with my cable service....more info
  • Easy Set-up
I bought this after the modem I had stopped working after many years. I like this Motorola because it is both router and modem combined. The only negative is that it has only one CAT-5 connection.

It worked so well out of the box I bought one for my daughters college apartment. I can't say enough good things about it, except for the one negative, lol....more info

  • Easy set-up. Range is average.
Set-up wasn't too bad, but I'm not too impressed with the range. I've had to add a range booster for a computer I have in the basement....more info
  • Easy setup, works great.
I needed a combination cable modem and wireless router and this Motorola unit was the best I found. I had no prior experience in setting up a "home network" - whatever that is - and the Motorola was very easy to setup and works great. No hassle - I recommend it....more info
  • Easy!
After continual problems with our Linksys WRT54G I decided that when we switched from DSL to cable that we would try a different router. We have had the Linksys wireless router for about three years. I can't tell you how many hours I spent on trying to access the router with my laptop. About three months ago we purchase a new wireless Canon printer. In order to be wireless, I had to access the wireless router. I spent hours and couldn't access the network.
The Motorola took under an hour and not only allowed for easy secure hookup of my laptop,it also found the printer.I can't say enough about how happy I am with this router and you can't find it anywhere cheaper then amazon. ...more info
  • Great Product
Easy setup. If your doing online gaming you will need to either know some stuff about firewall ports, which is easy if you take a little time, or just take the firewall down. I dont know about torrent, but I could not get limewire to work without taking the firewall completely down. Works well with world of warcraft, command and conquer, and my nintendo wii with the custom firewall settings with the appropriate ports opened. Great all in one product....more info
  • Good Modem
