Customer Reviews:

  • Only option for Macs without USB 2.0
I have a 12" powerbook from 2003 which has only USB 1.1 and Firewire-- no USB 2.0 ports and no ability to upgrade. I found that this was the only webcam option for me. The picture isn't great, but it is easy to use and it works. Even the Apple store no longer carries a Firewire webcam and every other Mac webcam I found required a USB 2.0 port. I'm very happy to have found this camera (the third one I purchased). Maybe this will be of help to someone with the same computer....more info
  • Mac users
Not a good choice for Mac users on Skype in spite of what reviews say...more info
  • Great for the price!
I use this with Yahoo Messenger and my Powerbook. The video quality is far from perfect, and its a little annoying that you have to buy extra software to use the camera with iChat, but I don't really need to do professional video conferencing or anything like that, so it gets the job done for me.

Bottom line... for the price it works pretty well....more info
I was very disapointed with Icecam after installing it on my G5. I tried using it in the same room I have another windows based computer, the results are a desaster. The video is so dark compared to the other webcam, That I could not make out my own image. I really wish I hadn't wasted my money on it....more info
  • Its only for MAC
The product packaging fails to mention that it is made for Mac's only. I purchased it and had to return it.

  • Not good for movement
The update speed of this camera is horrible. Any movement at all results in a massive blur. Great camera for remote monitoring of potted plants. I returned it for a Logitech, which was at least usable if nowhere near as good as my MacBook's built-in camera....more info
  • Good camera for the price
Camera works as advertised. It requires iChatUSBCam software to be usable with Mac OS X's iChat. ...more info
  • not for old i-book
I bought this hoping to use it with a hand me down i-book G3 with 800 mhz, osx 10.3.9. Didn't work. Got and sent sound over Skype. Got video but could not send. Any help out there?...more info
  • Great for older iBooks/Powerbooks etc.
I purchased this for my old 600Mhz G3 Ibook (10.3.9). That particular laptop only has USB 1.1. I purchased this so I can use this with Ichat (using iUSBCam v2.2.5 software). Everything works great! This camera is definitely worth the 29.95 I paid for it. By purchasing this camera you also get 5.00 off the purchase of the iUSBCam software. This setup is a great alternative to purchasing a firewire camera (iSight). Anyone with older hardware like me with definitely enjoy this camera. Just remember its a $29.95 camera so please do not expect a Mercedes at a Honda Civic price. ...more info
  • Not happy with Macally Portable video
Is the price right for something that doesn't work well? Probably not. The Macally Portable Goose Neck USB video met the physical demands of the counter top our Mac sits on, but that's about all. We've used it twice (tried to use it twice). Finding the button, or combination of buttons, to actually send video has eluded both my wife and I. We think this product is a turkey. ...more info
  • Works Fine
This is about the only camera that works well with Apple computers. Since Apple discontinued the iSight camera, there are no firewire cameras available to use with iChat and Skype.

Not a perfect like replacement for the iSight camera but functions adequately and is a good price....more info
  • Safe Bet
I am satisfied with my purchase of the macally icecam and I can confidently recommend this product for the price. It is VERY EASY to set up and use and it works well; However, I took off 1 star for the following 2 reasons: 1. Room lighting plays with the focus and the focus needs very delicate fine tuning - but it has a great picture once you finally get it in focus and get the room lighting right. 2. A separate software (purchase, but only $5.00 w/coupon) needed for Ichat. ...more info

I gave my first one to a relative and got a second one for myself. The second one does not work very well at all....more info
  • You get what you pay for.
The image quality was terrible. I think I could make out a silhouette of myself, but I couldn't even last 10 minutes before I disconnected the camera in disgust. You have to buy an extra piece of software to get this to work with iChat.

The form is cool, but the utility... is not. ...more info
This is a great little camera and a good value for what you get. That said, if you have a Mac, you MUST *BUY ADDITIONAL SOFTWARE*. It should only be $5, but this isn't stated anywhere on the packaging - you may figure this out only after troubleshooting why it won't work with iChat/Skype. A good value for a little flexible, portable camera, but be aware that there's an additional cost involved....more info
  • It works with Mac OS 10.4.6
It works with OS10.4.6 without buying anything else, although you need install an attached driver in your computer. To the best of my knowledge, this is the most reasonable webcam for Mac users. The design of the webcam and the image quality are not that great, but I find it satisfactory to show your family/friends how well you look....more info
  • Okay for the price
Picture quality is a bit fuzzy, and it doesn't see a wide area, but you can't expect a lot from a webcam in this price range. The gooseneck is very convenient, and for a cheap camera, it gets the job done....more info
  • Doesn't work with IChat or Skype
I was surprised to find that this works not at all with iChat and very poorly with Skype. I've bought MacAlly items before and have found them to be good products. Not this webcam. To use with Ichat you must BUY another program. Got it to work once with Skype after I reinstalled both Skype and the Ice Cam drivers. Next time I started up Skype same thing happened. Not worth the money....more info
  • Good for the price
I was surprise at the price, but for something that is temporary, less than a year, it is my price range. I'm not happy with the quality, I just thought I'd look better. I guess that's not the camera fault. The resolution is a bit grainer than I'd like. The easy of use is good. I have an old Mac G4 laptop and can tuck this little camera in the backpack I use to tote my computer stuff around and it does well. I do recommend it for the price, portability and easy of use.

  • Works very well except for lighting
I got some easy pictures / movies.
I did have a bit of file recognition trouble:
The movie files not being recognized by other applications as being Quicktime movies....more info
  • Good for what it does, just don't expect miracles.
I bought one of these for my mother to use with iChat AV and Mac OS X 10.3. With the addition of Ecamm's "iChatUSBCam" software (not included) it does work quite nicely, given the limitations of this USB camera and assuming you don't go into full screen mode. Physically, the camera is hardly imposing at all. The actual camera itself is slightly smaller than, say, a Bic lighter. The cable to connect it to your computer is strengthened; you bend the wire like a coat hanger to position the camera. The good thing is this makes the camera infinitely positionable. The bad thing is if you want to use this as a desk camera you'll find even the slightest vibration makes the camera wobble. I've found that if you wrap the wire around a solid object like a desk support, the camera becomes significantly more stable. Of course, this camera is really intended for travel use which makes all of this pretty well moot. IMAGE QUALITY: Image quality is decent for a USB camera but it won't win any awards. It does NOT like shadows or dimly lit areas; artifacting becomes a problem when lighting goes down. Given proper lighting conditions it produces an acceptable image. The ring around the lens allows you to focus it, but since the aperature is so tiny those with large hands may find it difficult to adjust. Macally has VERY good customer support and has historically been very Macintosh friendly. BOTTOM LINE: If you're looking for a cheap (Mac-friendly) webcam and you're not terribly concerned about premium image quality, this is a good way to go....more info
  • can't get icecam to work with yahoo
Has anyone been able to use icecam with yahoo messenger? I'm using it on a mac G5. Every time I click start my webcam in yahoo the program crashes. I contacted macally, but no help... I contacted yahoo and no help. They finally sent me a message saying they are experiencing technical difficulties. I think they just wanted to shut me up. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the cam and messanger, but to no avail. Should have forked over the cash for isight....more info
  • Excelente por el precio
La camara es super, lo mas funcional para Mac por el precio. Lo unico es que soy novato en osx y no se muy bien q software usar. Pero la reconocio de inmediato despues de instalar el software y es muy versatil.

  • Good for the money
If it weren't for a fantastic tech staff at Macally, I would never have gotten the camera to work. They bent over backwards to help me get online with iChat AV. The tracking is slow and focus could be better but what do you expect for the price. It works... and the goose neck is long enough to be visible above my iMac screen. It woud be nice if there was a stand for it but since mine only worked if connected directly to the usb port on the computer and not a hub, the goose neck will do. Until Mac reduces the price on their iSight, this'll do me fine. ...more info

I have a G4 iBook, and installed the software and had it running in only a couple of minutes. It's really easy to use, and has a nice design..very small and modern looking. Also the flexible cord is so nice! The quality is can be a little slow if you make big movements, but overal not bad. ...more info

  • BAD WEBCAM...I'm surprised at Macally!
I usually trust and buy Macally products, but why bother making this camera at all??? it had a horrible photo. It looked like I was playing with Photoshop's image washes. And it uses a driver. there are plenty of driver-less webcams out there. try something else.

  • Best Option for OS X 10.4
You only have two choices if you're running OS X 10.4. You can get the Isight for $150.00 or you can get the Macally Icecam for about $30.00.

The Macally gets the job done with just a few drawbacks. 1) You have to buy a driver online for which there comes a coupon when you buy the camera. 2.) The USB cable is only about 15in. long. ...more info
