Product Description

It's tough trying to beat the 1934 version of the popular adventure-romance story, starring Leslie Howard as the 18th-century British hero who poses as a fop in London society but runs a secret mission to rescue the doomed in Robespierre's Paris. But this 1982 television version, starring Anthony Andrews (Under the Volcano) as the Pimpernel and Jane Seymour as his beloved but estranged wife, is quite a treat. Andrews and Seymour expertly capture the essence of a relationship suffering from misunderstandings and elusive passion, and there is plenty of crackle to the action sequences. Clive Donner (What's New, Pussycat?) brings some strong cinematic qualities to this television presentation. --Tom Keogh

The swashbuckling classic comes to rip-roaring life in this lavish production, filled with breathless romance and derring-do! In the eyes of high society, Sir Percy Blakeney (Brideshead Revisited's Anthony Andrews) is a typical fop, surrounded by adoring ladies and clueless gentry. However, he is also a master of disguise and bears an infamous secret identity: the Scarlet Pimpernel, dashing and fearless rescuer of victims of the French Revolution! Sir Percy also falls head over heels for the beautiful Marguerite (Somewhere in Time's Jane Seymour), who is also wooed by the villainous Paul Chauvelin (The Lord of the Rings' Sir Ian McKellan), Robespierre's Chief Agent for the Committee of National Security. Suave, stylish, and utterly irresistible, this dazzling adventure is sure to capture your heart!

Customer Reviews:

  • Great production values, good story
By far the best of the Scarlet Pimpernel films. Wonderful costumes and sets, but what really sets it apart is the way that Anthony Andrews captures Sir Percy, both as the fashionable fop and in his action-hero persona. Fans of the book should be warned that the second half of the film comes from a different novel altogether, Eldorado, and follows that story only in general outlines. Chauvelin's romantic interest in Marguerite is also an invention of this film, although it works. But the whole thing so beautifully replicates the spirit of Orczy's novel (is better than the original, in fact) that I highly recommend it for all Pimpernel fans. ...more info

  • finally after all these years of looking
For years I have tried unsuccessfully to find this movie. I graduated from highschool in 1987 and we watched this during one of my high school years in English class. We read the book, then watched the movie and I absolutely fell in love with this movie and never forgot it. I found the book that was aired on the Hallmark Channel, with pictures from the movie in it. I just loved Anthony Andrews and would dream that I was Jane Seymour. Even when I was in my 20's I was dating a guy and we watched and recorded it at his parent's house. The sad thing is that we broke up and the recorded copy was left at his parents house and I never got it back. I contacted Hallmark to see if they had it available, but because
it was not a Hallmark Hall of Fame movie they did not have a copy.
I kept searching over the years, video stores, my movie club, even
on regular t.v. NO luck. Then I had an idea to search on Amazon and
here it is, I am so excited, after more than twenty years I will finally
have it to watch over and over again. I agree, this movie should be on
t.v. more and made into a motion film picture. This movie is my all time
favorites of my favorites! I love the acting, the romance, the suspense,
the history of it, the wardrobes and the love between Sir Percy and
Marguerite and much more than I have room to write....more info

This movie is not a serious drama, but it is still entertaining. It is a good family movie.

  • Pimperlicious

If you enjoy the kind of old school, Robin Hood swashbuckler war hero style coupled with a very young Jane Seymour and Ian McKellan (before he was Sir) and you will have an enjoyable family movie night at home. However, it would be good to know your French Revolution history prior to viewing... along with some basic folklore of who the Scarlet Pimpernel was will help with the back story.

  • Gem-Dandy
How lucky I was to have discovered this jewel-of-a-movie in a stack of DVD's that a friend loaned me whilst I was recovering from a broken ankle and broken elbow. I wasn't expecting much because movies were getting boring at that point, and I wasn't familiar with this one. But--sink me--I'm a big fan now!

"Pimpernel" is witty and wise; watch that demmed quirk-y fella and smile awhile....more info

  • They seek him here...
The Scarlet Pimpernel in and of itself is an adventurous tale encircling the hero Sir Percy Blakeney and his role as the Scarlet Pimpernel. Add to this tale the talent of Anthony Andrews, Jane Seymour, and Ian McKellen and you have a thrilling movie that will not disappoint the viewer. The acting in this version of the film brings each character to life. The love between Percy and Marguerite in this version of the film seems genuine and intense. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who has taken the time to view this page... it is a classic!...more info
  • Great Movie! Great Service!
We love this story, and have seen the old movie and the new musical version. This is our favorite movie version. The lead does a great job - playing the fool, and the hero! We recommend it for families - decent, exciting, suspenseful, romantic, and educational, - all while being so entertaining!...more info
  • The Scarlet Pimpernel
This is an excellent movie about the French revolution. If you like period dramas, you'll love this movie. Anthony Andrews is absolutely perfect as the Scarlet Pimpernel and Jane Seymour is lovely as usual. Also you can see a much younger Ian McKellen, years before he played Gandalf in The Lord Of The Rings. I really enjoyed this movie and hope you will too. ...more info

  • The best Pimpernel
I think this Anthony Andrews/Jane Seymour version is superior even to the Leslie Howard Merle Oberon version. In addition to Anthony Andrews skill in his various disguises, he also shows an athleticism that is lacking in the Leslie Howard version. The plot of the Jane Seymour/Anthony Andrews version is more complex than the Leslie Howard version with the addition of King Louis son.

It has to be one of the most entertaining period movies around. ...more info
  • Excellent remake of a classic
I'm not usually a fan of remakes, but I was just plain blown away by this one. I rented it from Netflix figuring it would not compare with the 1934 classic. I loved it so much, I purchased a copy from Amazon.

I can't comment on how this movie compares to the books because I have not read them...yet. However, I have seen the 1934 classic and have always loved it, although it always left me wanting more. I wanted to know more about the characters.

This 1982 remake has what I found lacking in the classic. I like seeing the relationship between Sir Percy and Marguerite develop from first meeting, through courtship, to marriage, estrangement and reconciliation.
The 1934 film just drops you into the midst of the estrangement with very little explanation about what caused it.

I can't seem to stop watching this film; I am so intrigued by Anthony Andrews performance; every time I see it, I find more depth in his portrayal of Sir Percy. I am fascinated by how he can move effortlessly between the several facets of Sir Percy's personality and guises.

I could go on and on...but won't. I now have both the 1934 and 1982 versions in my library and plan to keep watching them both. I think the performances of the actors in both films are wonderful. I highly recommend both films, but overall prefer the 1982 screenplay. I only wish Leslie Howard, Merle Oberon, and Ray Massey could have had such a screenplay in 1934. I would like to have seen what they could do with it. Anthony Andrews, Jane Seymour, and Ian McKellen got that opportunity
    and created a masterpiece....more info

What an awesome story! I have watched it many times. Can't get enough. Anthony Andrews and Jane Seymour are a beautiful couple. And the league of the Scarlett Pimpernel are a wonderful group to watch. • Outstanding production
This is an outstanding production. My wife and I found transfer to DVD to be just about perfect. Stars, pacing, storyline, scenery, sound, lighting, costumes--everything--just first rate. Anthony Andrews is great as the elegant but often foppish, then heroic, Sir Percy. Jane Seymour is quite good as Marguerite, too. Supporting players, including Ian McKellen as Chauvelain, all do well. And we have a happy, surprise ending. Running time is a generous 2 hours, 16 minutes, so you have to allow time to take in the whole saga.

When comparing to the original version from 1935, starring Leslie Howard and Merle Oberon, there really is nothing to compare. The 1935 offering we bought was released in December, 2008, by Reel Classics. Apparently, it was done for widescreen applications as the video was severely letter-boxed. We don't own a widescreen TV, so maybe it's unfair to evaluate. Nevertheless, video and sound were poor and there were no subtitles, chapters, or special features. Being a -R format, the disk would not play on our trusty Philips 711 player so we had to figure running time on our newer Panasonic. It came to a sparse 1 hour, 36 minutes. The whole story would have been unintelligible had we not read the book or seen the 1982 version beforehand. Sadly, we have trouble even giving the 1935 a single star.

The 1998 version of "The Scarlet Pimpernel," starring Richard E. Grant and Elizabeth McGovern, is also quite good but we give it 4 stars, compared to 5 for the 1982 offering. In the 1998, there were three (3) separate installments, totalling about 4 ? hours, so the story line has been expanded. Production values are fine, as well. But this DVD set rates just a notch below the one from 1982, in our view.

Back on the 1982 version, what is rather puzzling to us is the fact that Anthony Andrews was not propelled to greater stardom after this movie. He really is so appealing and dynamic in this show, you'd think he'd have been offered all the Leslie-Howard-type roles by Hollywood. We've read that he turned down the lead role in "Remington Steele," though, shortly after "The Scarlet Pimpernel," so maybe he was blacklisted by movie producers. (If he'd accepted you wonder if he, rather than Pierce Brosnan, would have gone on to play James Bond). Anthony's still extant, however, and we see he's to be starring in a London stage production of "Camelot." Apparently, he's also done work in "My Fair Lady," as well. Being born in 1948, Anthony's only 61 at this point; so maybe, like Rex Harrison, he'll find greater stardom later in life. We hope that proves true.

  • A Wonderful Adaptation
I watched this film shortly after reading the book and I fell in love. Anthony Andrews was PERFECT as the Scarlet Pimpernel, playing both the fop and the hero with ease. I would have preferred if Marguerite had been written as she was in the novel, but Jane Seymour was both lovely and extremely talented in the role as it was written for the movie.

The end of the movie was changed from the book, but the way they chose to do so was wonderful and I was not disappointed.

I HIGHLY recommend this movie for both those who have and have not read the book. It is an amazing story of heroism, true love and adventure....more info
  • The Scarlet Pimpernel with Jane Seymour
Fabulous movie . . . there's not a better version of this movie available! This one is full of wit, humor, great costumes and disguises, and tells a good tale in a classy way with Jane Seymour and Anthony Andrews as the main characters. They are wonderful in their roles. Even if you're not normally a fan of this type of historical adventure, this one is a must see/must own movie! Its been a favorite of mine for 20 years!!! :) I highly recommend this movie! Its a fabulous escape from reality for a few hours! You won't be disappointed!!!!!...more info
  • Romantic but a bit slow
Although I love the actors in this version, if you're looking for action, the B&W version is a bit better. But the beauty of the color, costumes and people is wonderful. Jane Seymour is the ultimate beauty and I couldn't wait until she knew her love was the hero and the hero was her love....more info
