When is a clock not just a clock? When it provides so much more than just the time: temperature, phase of the moon, and accuracy within one second per year, for example. This handsome wall clock, with its dual LCD screens and black-accented oak finish, is an example of household life being enhanced by science. The WS-8117U can hang on the wall or stand freely, with a built-in, fold-out stand. Radio-controlled time (to the hour, minute, and second) and date are prominently displayed, along with indoor and outdoor temperatures measured in either Fahrenheit or Celsius. The day of the week can be displayed in English, French, Spanish or German.

Time can be displayed in 12- or 24-hour modes, and time zones from Greenwich Mean Time to -12 GMT can be selected, with three-letter identifications for US time zones. An alarm feature is useful as a timer, and, if the clock happens to hang or stand near a bed (or a couch that's used for napping), a snooze feature allows for gradual wake-up. Moon phase shows in twelve increments, from new moon, through gibbous and crescent phases (waxing and waning), to quarter and finally full moon.

The clock comes with La Crosse transmitter TX37U-IT. Clock and transmitter each operate on two AA batteries. For options in wall mounting, three screws and screw anchors and a strong adhesive tape are included. The WS-8117U measures 12-1/4 by 8 by 1-1/4 inches. La Crosse provides a one-year limited warranty on its clocks. Each clock comes with a thoroughly detailed instruction booklet. --Garland Withers

Customer Reviews:

  • Excellent Clock...Features May Confuse
The setup and operation of the clock is very easy. The time is perfectly accurate, as compared to my other atomic timing devices and it looks great on my wall over my oak desk. I gave it a four-star because some of the features could be confusing to some of us. But even with those quirks, I would definitely buy this clock again if I had it all to do over again. Quirk #1, getting used to the reverse color of the moon phases takes a conscience effort. Maybe one day I'll get used to it, a real challenge after years of reading moon tables with the opposite colorization. The other quirk is the date, which is in day/month format, so 2/3 is March 2nd, NOT February 3rd. (If the model in the Amazon ad showed 13/12 instead of 12/12, customers might be alerted to this beforehand.) Don't know about most folks, but I was brought up on mm/dd/yy. I realize that other folks use different date sequences so I would suggest that La Crosse include several date formats to choose from in the clock's options menu. I did NOT have any problem seeing the time in low light as I read in some reviews. Overall, good clock for the money....more info
  • Another $ Saving At Amazon
Hassle free setup for all functions of this item. Large clear display with no problem to read.
Better than expected. You will not be disappointed with this product.

  • Does the job
Although we could never get this to sync up with the atomic clock, I set it manually per the easy instructions and it's working fine. I like the moon phases, although they seem kind of "backwards" - i.e., full moon is totally black, new moon is totally light - but once you get used to THAT all else is working well for us. We have it mounted on the back of a brick wall (double-sided fireplace) and the temp registers a little differently than the other thermometers in the house, due I'm sure to the mass of the bricks. The clock is easily visible to me about 12 feet away in the kitchen, the day/date is a useful feature when trying to remember which day's vitamins to take, and overall we like the look of the clock....more info
  • No Electric Available and Loses Settings
1: You cannot plug this clock into an electric outlet. It only runs on batteries

2: Once the batteries die, the clock loses all settings.

3: The battery life is only 3 months

4: Every 3 months, you have to reconfigure the settings...more info

  • Works great!
I'd give it five stars if the numbers were easiar to read from a distance. It's a nice looking clock and is accurate!...more info
  • Works as advertised
Just received the product a few days ago, set it up, mounted it and the outdoor temperature sensor. You need to follow the instructions on the battery insertion sequence: Sensor 1st, Clock 2nd. The atomic clock synch didn't synch during the first night but did the second day. I mounted the clock high up and it is still very readable during the day (all parts of the display - see photo). At night, it will depend on your room lighting but for me it was ok even with some small low mounted FL puck lights mounted on my computer desk facing down. YMMV. Plan and test your mounting locations. Note batteries NOT included and outdoor sensor is NOT waterproof. I mounted it hanging from under a porch....more info
