  • 12 year old gamer's stoopid
Don't listen to "a 12 year old gamer". The hobbits are the best part. If you had enough skill to get past Shelob's Lair, the next two levels are fun. The black gate is the funnest level, although I was disappointed in the Nazgul. About 2 minutes and they were done like dinner. My character of choice is Faramir, although if you don't have the cheat, it takes a while to get him.P.S. my Sam is at level 10....more info

Really, really good. I thought that the levels were awesome. It is as good as the movie. At times it is funny, as in Escape from Osgiliath. If you are reading this review, I think that you should get this game....more info
  • Fun, exciting and fun
This game is great! It's just likeyou're actually in the movie or book. It's just like theTwo Towers but upgraded, like you go from playing 4 people to 9! You get to play as all your favourite characters. In fact, basically all the good guys, like Aragorn(of course, Legolas, Gimli, Gandalf, Sam, Frodo, and even Merry, Pippin and Faramir(but you have to beat the Crack of Doom to play Pippin and Faramir, and the Black Gate to play Frodo). You get to fight loads of enemies. You actually get to fight bosses like the King of the Dead, Shelob, the Nazgul Lord, Gollum and even the Mouth of Sauron! You have to fight enemies that get harder and harder like orcs, ghosts, giant spiders, Uruk Hai, Easterlings, Nazgul, Trolls and the dreaded Mumakils. The only problem is the game is a little easy. Some of the levels where you have to defend your fellow warriors or fight through levels swarming with orcs in a time limit and fighting Nazgul at the same time(like in Minas Tirith) but most of the levels are easy. All the bosses are easy, you can beat them on your first or second try. The only boss it may take a while to beat is Gollum, the final boss, but that only takes you three or four tries as well, it just takes a long time to beat him. The normal enemies are harder than the bosses and(believe it or not)the Nazgul Lord! You can beat him in about five minutes! But overall it's fun. It took me several weeks to do it, and I still play it, and it was months since I got it! Buy it, you won't be disappointed!...more info
  • Average
While this game was little bit better than the first overall it is just average. Even my kids who are big fans of the series were disappointed. The first one completely blows so if you are going to buy one of the games you should get this one. The graphics are really good but it seems like no attension was payed to game play. Somewhat of a downer....more info
  • fun to play,but...
This game is fun to play, and if you are a lotr fan, you should get it. The fighting is fun for a while, but you just keep fighting the same kinds of orcs, and it gets a little boring. Some parts confused me, because I didn't know what to do, but once I found out what to do this game was a breeze. It was also too short. Having said that, this game does have many great features. The graphics are very good, as well as the music and the character voices. After you beat the game, you get 3 secret characters, and they're fun to play with for a while, and for some reason Pippin is better with a sword than Aragorn.Overall, I gave it 4 stars because it is very fun and addictive, but it was not perfect....more info
  • A great game, but it goes too fast
This game based on "The Return of the King" features excellent gameplay with nearly flawless controlls. It is hard to think of something more entertaining than slaying orc after orc with the Narsil, or picking them off with a bow while controlling Legolas. However, this game ends too soon, there is not enough hack n' slash to satisfy me. If EA could make an epic LOTR game that gave us 50+ hours of gameplay(instead of the 10-15 in ROTK),with more free-roaming levels, I believe that they would have one of the greatest video games of all time....more info
  • '' ONE AWESOME GAME '' !!
  • sorry amazon but this is not a toy, more adults then kids that would play this game
First of all, I must say I got the ASPYR version for mac computers. It's ok but whenever too much is going on for the computer to handle, it pauses in 5 second incriments. Besdies that, it is a little delayed and it makes it harder to play. Besides that I really wish it was first person view not third. There are times when I cannot even see my character at all, in the middle of a huge fight even! What am I supposed to do then? Probably if the game was in first person view, I'd be able to beat it, even with all the other problems. One of the most annoying things is that in my book under the combo attacks, it either tells me a combonation of right-right-right click, or left-left-left click. Well guess what ASPYR? Macs don't have a right and left click on their mouse button, we only have one, what then? Why couldn't you just make a list of which attacks make up each combonation? Maybe then I would be able to know what to do with bigger enemies, like the king of the dead for instance. This looks like a very enjoyable game, i will admit it is fun, but very frustrating. Now I have to go through google to find the combos that i need to know and hope that will be enough to help me overcome all the other problems. This is very very very frustrating to me....more info
  • Tough but fun.
Return of the King is a fun game and a real challenge. I thought the Two Towers game was tough, but this is much tougher. Even on the easy setting. I had a hard time with a couple levels. The Walls of Minas Tirith was nearly impossible to beat. I got frustrated many times, but I eventually beat the game.

Despite my frustration with its difficulty, I really do love the game and enjoy playing it. The graphics are great and the characters are fun to play (except for Frodo - he's very weak).

If you like the movie and like adventure games, you'll like this game....more info

  • The Best LOTR Game
I'm not a big fan of this game but it's definately alot better than the other 2 (especially the first one, one of the worst games ever in my opinion). I love the books and the movies were great but the games I wasn't impressed with. A plus on this one is that it will give you a challenge at times. This is definately worth renting but not worth buying....more info
  • great game
this game is great. When i first bought it i did not think it would be this fun. You play as 8 characters Aragorn, Legoless, Gimli, Gandelf, Sam, Frodo, and the three secreat characters(Famair, Merry, Pippen). But I'll some it up quickly, Buy it... And I'll say one last thing...Aragorn is the best!...more info
  • Great Secret Characters
The best part about this game is the secret characters. The secret characters are Pippin, Merry, and Faramir. At first I thought the secret character instead of Faramir would be Eomer. I mean Eomer is a much better character then Faramir, even though Faramir is pretty cool. I wish that u could play as anyone, like Elrond, Haldir, Boromir, Theoden, Eomer, Eowyn, Arwen, etc. The Fellowship of the Ring movie would have been better instead of Arwen meeting Frodo after he got stabbed at Weathertop, that the originall character Glorfindel would have been there. But besides just the characters, the levels are great. accept there are a few levels that are in the TT. Maybe instead of the hobbits while they were in Osgiliath, maybe they shoulde of had Faramir there like in the movie when the orcs ride ashore, and you would have to defend Osgiliath. Personally my favorite characters for each race are. Men: Eomer, Hobbit: Merry, Elf: Haldir, Dwarf: Gloin, orc/uruk: Lurtz....more info
  • Best Lord of the Rings game
Everyone who played the Two Towers yearned for 2 player longer levels and more characters, and EA happily responded. First the graphics are pretty darn good, except the in-game characters' mouths don't move, but that's my only nitpick with the graphics. The sound is spectacular, exactly from the movies, which is pretty cool, and the voice acting is great with the actors from the trilogy lending their voices(watch "Hobbits on gaming." It's downright hilarious!). Controls are precisely lifted from The Two Towers, not that it's a bad thing. My only complaint with this is that even with 15 levels, it's a tad too short, enemies can stop your combos way too easily, game can get intense and hard, even on the easy difficulty. But they're only minor complaints. If you're a fan of the movies or books, you owe it to yourself to pick up The Return of the King. You won't be dissapointed....more info

  • Absolutely Perfect!
I suck at gaming, so I was challenged by this game and still have not completed it. But if you are a great gamer you will easily breeze through this game.

Animation:Perfect. The animations don't make you feel like there aren't any at all, yet the game is not so animated that you feel like you are playing a game based on a walt disney movie.

Game play: The best! The game is divided into three paths: Path of the King, which gives you a choice of three characters to play as: Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli.
The Path of the wizard, wich allows you to play as Gandalf.
There is also The Path of the Hobbits, which you may play as Sam (and later Frodo, when you unlock him). There are also hidden characters, which I do not know because I have not unlocked them yet, but I am pretty sure they are Faramir, Pippin, and Merry (There is a chance one of them is Eowyn).

Multiplayer: Okay, once you get around the fact that you must complete the Crack of Doom in single player before you can play any levels other than The Paths of the Dead, The King of the Dead, The Southern Gate, and Pellenor fields.

Altogether, this is a pretty good game, and I reccomend it most to those of medium gaming abilitys....more info

  • A Challenging, but Fun Game
This third installment in the Lord of the Rings series has a superior control system, and extremely fun missions, it is lacking, however, in one key aspect: it is impossible to skip cutscenes unless you have already seen them. Each cutscene has clips from the movie, which you will have undoubtedly seen if you are willing to shell out the money to pay for the game, so I don't see why you are forced to watch the cutscenes. In the game, you are able to play as any of the original nine members of the fellowship (except Faramir replaces Boromir), but Faramir, Merry, and Pippin are only unlockable once you complete the game. Each character is unique, and the way that each character does combinations looks slightly different, adding to the realism of the game. All in all, it's definitely worth getting, especially with Amazon's low price....more info

I so far love this game I baet it in three months and the enemies dont put up a good fight. they some times just remain still and dont bother to attack. there are only a few hard levels in this game the black gate and pelenor fields and minas tirith top of the wall. the trolls dont put up a figth either.
The only hard enemies in this game are oliphonts and enemies with life meters. Over all a good game....more info
  • Cool idea but way too hard
My husband and I LOVED the Lord of the Rings movies, so we couldn't wait to play the game. We wish we'd never heard of it. Both of us find the game much too hard, to the point that the game is irritating, rather than fun. It's neat to be able to be Gandalf or Aragorn or Frodo, but even when playing the most powerful characters, we have to play the same scenario over and over and over and, well, you get the idea. This game could have been awesome, but as it is, my husband and I wish we hadn't bought it. (If you are 10 years old and have really fast little hands, this may not apply to you. :-))...more info

  • Gaming Perfection.. well, almost.
The only complaint I have of the wonderful game is that there isn't more of it and that the footage that's included in the game isn't mostly from Return of the King. But, This is the way movie games should be... this and Spider-Man 2! Way to go EA! A must buy!...more info
  • All hail the King
Like The Two Towers before it, EA's Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King is pure hack & slash action. Loaded with even more action than the last game and containing plenty of extras that fans of the films will enjoy, you are thrown head first into battle the moment you load the game as you begin fighting in the ultra epic battle of Helm's Deep from Two Towers. From then on, Return of the King basically follows the three seperate paths of Gandalf, Frodo, and Aragorn; while allowing you to play as Gandalf, Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli, or Sam in different scenarios. The hack & slash gameplay against hordes of enemies mirrors that of Two Towers, so those who enjoyed that game will most likely enjoy Return of the King. The graphics are somewhat better than before with some improved character models, while the game's sound and music are excellent. All in all, fans of the Lord of the Rings film series owe it to themselves to pick this game up; it's the best video game to use the Lord of the Rings license yet....more info
  • CRAPNESS thy name is the lord of the rings
People who think that anything to do with the Lord of the Rings is good are twats. This is the crappest trilogy of books and films ever created. J.R.R Tolkien is an idiot to create such a pathetic set of books, and Peter Jackson is a fat wanker to create such a crap set of films. • An Amazing Movie, An Amazing Game
This game is beyond words. The levels are so complex and detailed it's a wonder it was made by computer animation, rather than filmed live from the sets! The characters are exact replicas of their actor counterparts, and the voiceovers by the actors make it all that more realistic!

The complexity of the different battle techniques one can use are awesome. This is not a "press alt to kill" type game, it requires some thinking through and getting used to different attacks and parries. You will definitely not get bored with it. Also, the game is not going to be done in one day. The cool thing about it is that it stretches itself out. You're not going to defeat the whole game in one sitting and then wonder what to do next. It's a challenge, though not too difficult to handle. It's an addicting game that will bring you back every day to keep going.

Once you're done, you unlock cheats, interviews, new levels, and new characters! Also, you can repeat the whole game using characters that were locked before. For instance, you can try and see how Aragorn would fare getting the Ring to Mount Doom, or how Pippin would have survived the Paths of the Dead.

Amazing game, make sure to get this one! You'll be so glad you did!...more info

  • Even better then the Two Towers! *shocker*
Well as my title says, it is better! Not that I though it possible, but I've been proved wrong before.

A whole new side of Middle-earth is seen in this game and through new character's sides and through different paths. Play as Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli, Gandalf, Sam and Frodo as well as 3 other locked characters, gotta beat the game for them though and NO, the cheat codes won't free them until you've beat the game. I know, I tried. :-)

Just as in the Two Towers, this game had loads of nice extras like actor interviews, behinds the scenes, image boards and movie cut-ins. Along with the old actor voice overs, some new ones join in, such as Dominic Monaghan, Billy Boyd, Sean Astin, Andy Serkis and David Wenham. Can you guess who the locked characters might be?? :-)

You start the game with Gandalf at the end of Helm's Deep and then take your pick of 3 different paths. The Path of the Wizard, play as Gandalf but do it alone as he is alone on his route. The Path of the King takes Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli to the Paths of the Dead to face the dead army and on to face Mumakil and Trolls to Sauron's front door or the Paths of the (stout little) Hobbits as Sam and escape Osgiliath while hiding from the Ringwraiths, to Shelob's lair and fending off the enormous Spider (ew, bug) to finally facing off with Gollum as Frodo in the fight for the Ring.

Music from the movie, great special effects, actor voice-overs, atractive backgrounds and just a flat out good fight to stay alive make this a really good game. You almost feel like a part of it.

But before you go and buy something you might not like, rent it. ...more info
  • Cool, but it could have been better.
DC here. I think this a great game and I like it very much but I still think it could have been better. Anyone who's played The Two Towers or Fellowship of the Ring probably remembers the characters mouth move while speaking and it gave the game a real feel to it. You think they would do the same for this one right? Wrong. I don't understand why they wouldn't take the time to finish that. Oh well. Next, the levels weren't all that challenging except for shelob, she was one of the most challenging bosses I have ever fought. I like challenging video games and this game sorta fails on that. Well, that's my review for this game. I still play it anytime I can and think it's a must have for any LOTR fan. Well, that's a rap....more info
  • Awesome, Challenging Yet Fun... A must have!
This game rocks! It is so cool! If intense battles, magicical attacks, and awesome combos are what you want, BUY THIS GAME! You can play as Gandalf, Gimli, Legolas, Aragorn, and Sam. They each have their own unique attacks and upgrades. Challenging levels where you fight off squadrons of Orcs and other enemies makes the game suspenseful yet fun. The graphics are great. With Gandalf you can power up your staff and then release its power all around you, destroying many orcs. Legolas can use arrows to swiftly take out many orcs. Aragorn and Gimli fight fiercely. Sam fights swiftly and efficiently. In short, this game is for everyone, non-LOTR fans and LOTR fans. THIS IS A GREAT GAME!!!...more info
  • Awesome
I've played in both single-player and co-op modes. This game is awesome! Even after many, many hours of gameplay and level restarts, I still love doing battle. Gandalf was hardest to play in the single-player mode. My boyfriend and I just finished co-op mode. The only negative was that you can't jump between paths as in single-player mode. After completing the path of the king, you take the path of the wizard, you have to complete all those levels before taking the path of the hobbits. A walkthrough guide helps sometimes. Excellent challenges, graphics and upgrades provided many hours of hack 'n' slash entertainment....more info

  • Great Game
This is the best two player game I've ever played. In the dark, on a big screen TV, hooked up to a good stereo, just adds to the excitement. The graphics are great also. I would recommend going on-line and printing out a faq (help/walkthrough). Some parts are tricky- like the level where you have to run out of the place before it falls down. Not only do you have to know where your going, but you have to wiggle the directional button back and forth while your going forward so the bolders don't stop you as much. So now that you that, you may have even more fun than I had! Look up how to beat Golem also- push, hit, kill move!...more info
  • best movie of the year, and best game of the year
The Return of the King as three paths to it that you can take. First, (for everyone that has'nt played the game yet) it starts out at Helms Deep at the very end of the battle when Gandalf comes with the Riders of Rohan and crushes Sauruman's uruk-hai. The you finally get to choose what path you want, their is The path of the king which is Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli and you fight through such levels as Paths of the dead (the paths of the dead is a boring level if you play one player, but it is much funner in co-op (two player)) also you will play the king of the dead, the southern gate( my favorite level), pelennor fields, and finally the black gate, then there is path of the wizard you will play as gandalf in this path and play the road to Isengard, Minas Tirith: On top of the wall, and Minas Tirith: Courtyard. They are all pretty easy levels. Then their is the paths of the hobbits the first three levels of the hobbit you will play as Sam ( escape from Osgiliath, Shelob's lair, and Cirith Ungol) then on the last level you will play as Frodo aganist Gollum in the crack of Doom. I think this game has no cons and is probably one of the best game's ever, make sure you buy this game, and also buy the TT and play that, I hope you have enjoyed my revieew and maybe learned some things that will help you...more info
  • Fun, But Sometimes Difficult
Let me start by saying that I'm a HUGE LOTR fan, and so of course I had to get the video game. I wasn't disappointed, for the most part. You can play as 5 charcters: Gandalf, Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli, and Sam. 4 more are unlocked after you beat the game. There are 3 paths to choose from: the wizards path(Gandalf), the path of the king (Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli), and the path of the hobbits (Frodo and Sam). Also has clips from the movies as an introdction to most of the levels. There are several pros and cons to this game:

    - Awesome, realistic graphics. Return of the King by far has the best in the series.
    - Smooth movement. Every movement and attack is super realistic and super smooth...just like watching the movie.
    - Plenty of locations from the movie to play in.
    - Allows you play with a friend in co-op mode. The best part about that is there's no more split screens- just one big screen.
    - After you beat the game you unlock several secret characters (Merry, Pippin, Frodo, and Faramir), along with interviews of some of the acters from the movies. But the big bonus to me are the codes they give you. After you punch in those codes, the game is all too easy.

    - Some of the levels are just too darn hard, even when you have the game difficulty set to easy. It took me a couple trys on some of the levels to get past them.
    - The introductions to the levels are too long. They include clips from the movie before almost all of the levels, and after you've already seen them it gets annoying. However, you can just skip them by pressing X if you've already beaten that level.
    - After you've beaten the game, there's not much to do except endlessly slay orcs and men.

Overall, if you enjoy fighting games, then this is for you. If you're a diehard fan of LOTR, this is for you. If you're neither, then I'd rent it first, and if you fall madly in love with it, get it.

    ** Select Codes**
While playing, press start. Hold down the L1, L2, R1, and R2 buttons at the same time while punching in these letters. You'll hear a confirmation sound every time you've correctly entered a code:
    Unlock Faramir: X,X,triangle,triangle
    Unlock Frodo: triangle,circle,circle,circle
    Unlock Merry: X,down,down,X
Unlock Pippin: triangle, circle,X,circle (this one won't work for me sometimes)
The following codes are character specific; enter the code that corresponds to the character you're conrolling:

    + 1000 experience points:
    Aragorn: up,square,triangle,X
    Faramir: square,triangle,up,square
    Frodo: down,triangle,up,down
    Gandalf: circle,triangle,up,down
    Gimli: circle,circle,triangle,X
    Legolas: X,triangle,up,X
    Merry: down,down,square,X
    Pippin: triangle,X,square,X
    Sam: triangle,X,down,X

  • Satisfaction Guaranteed
Unlike some of the other reviewers that feel they have to write a whole essay on the game, I'm going to make it short and sweet.

This game, like Two Towers, is great because you have multiple characters to play with and also, different paths. The graphics are tight as are the sound. The controls are also easy and the combos are neat. I like the fact that not only can you purchase upgrades for your character but the whole team as well. I would purchase upgrades for everyone, because my tactic is to complete each level using all the characters. After all members completed that same level, I'd move on. So, purchasing upgrades for everyone made it easier for me to advance as the next character.
The game did get a little overwhelming, especially the levels where you had multiple enemies to fight, but the game is just awesome anyway.

So, should you buy it. Yes. But, be warned you'll get addicted and play for all hours of the night!!!...more info

I bought this game first for my PC. But it didn't have Co-op. When I bought it for PS2. I had lost of fun. Though I finished it with my brother in about the same amount of time it would take to watch the extended edition movie.

Fun simple fun. Good fanfar, with interviews and interesting opinions the actors share about the video game. Voice-work and music is good. I enjoy the animations given to orcs (it's a good thing because I've killed a lot).

Short, as I said. After you played though it once there is little incentive to play it again (other then fun)....more info
