Customer Reviews:

  • What No One Is Saying Here...

I have a Mac iBook and I have had no trouble -- maybe there is just some incompatibility with the 13" model people are complaining about...

BUT, I will not disclose the nature of my problem with my old cable lest people try to take advantage -- lets just say that *I* did something really stupid. Kensington REPLACED my cable for free, even though what happened to it was TOTALLY MY FAULT, and they knew it!!

I just think that a company that cares about its customers this much deserves to be acknowledged and deserves 5 stars!

Also, here is something I learned on the Learning Channel back when they showed studies and not just Choppers and people decorating their neighbors' houses with plywood and spray-paint...

There was a study where, before people got up to walk away from their stuff, on beaches, in libraries, in cafes and bars, etc., they asked a complete stranger to keep an eye on it...then they sent in someone else to lurk around the stuff and maybe try to take something. In *EVERY* case, EVERY SINGLE CASE!, the stranger got up to defend the things they were asked to watch. There is something about entrusting your stuff to another person that makes that person take your side and feel a responsibility to back up their promise.

Think about your own experience...isn't there something that makes you extra-vigilant when someone says, "Hey, can you watch my stuff?"

So DO lock up your computer with the Kensington, but then, just ask anyone to also watch your stuff for you and if they say they will, they will. Then you have 2 deterrents to theft. Nothing is ever going to totally protect your computer from theft, but this cable and other humans work pretty darn well....more info
  • Shoddy, poor quality
The cable itself is OK, but the lock is very poor quality. The internal mechanism on my lock unscrewed itself from the body of the lock after about six uses -- and no, it was not tampered with, or at least the anti-tamper mechanism had not been activated. This product is worth about $5 and does nothing more than avoid tempting honest people. I'm sure the proper tool would pop the lock out of the security port in two seconds. ...more info
  • Grand so it is.
Not a bother with it. Works fine and all that. I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a computer lock. Bit pricey....more info
  • Light, Effective, Laptop Security Solution
I have three of these and I'm pleased with them. I leave two laptops secured to the desk at all times and the third sits in my laptop backpack ready for travel. These are light, and simple to operate. No complaints. I've used the Kensington brand laptop cables for years - I think since they first came out. I lose them periodically but keep buying more. I highly recommend.

As a bonus, it looks like the newer external hard drives are now being made with the laptop security "hole/notch" so you can secure these with the security cables also. Very nice. My new Seagate 500GB FreeAgent does for sure but I've seen the security features mentioned in reviews of other drives as well....more info
  • Peace of mind
I recently had to go out of town for a couple of days. I was able to use the notebook lock to lock my computer to the desk in the hotel room. I didn't worry about someone easily walking away with it.
It's like they say, "locks are made to keep honest people honest." If someone really wants to steal my computer, they will steal it. However, the Kensington notebook lock gave me some peace of mind. ...more info
  • Peace of mind with Kensington notebook lock and security cable
I'm a bit paranoid about using my Powerbook in public, since it is so easy to turn away for a moment and have someone grab it and run. And with my banged up knees I sure can't catch them! So after looking at reviews I purchased the Kensington Microsaver Notebook Lock and Security Cable. Now, whenever I use my laptop in public, I routinely cable lock it to a chair, table or whatever else is handy. I usually run the cable through the handles of my laptop bag as well for bag security. You do need to be realistic about the lock and cable. It does give you peace of mind, but use common sense about where you leave your laptop and for how long....more info
  • Works great
The lock works fine. Only problem I had was that I had to remove the extra black ring otherwise it's too hard to fasten....more info
  • Works as advertised
This product works well and while not impervious to tampering, when used properly, is an adequate deterent to the casual or sneak miscreant. The locking mechanism fits snugly against the notebook side and stays firm. The key is in proper and steady positioning while turning the key in the lock. We have experienced no damage to the notebook casing....more info
  • Kensington 64068F Notebook Lock & 13" MacBook warpage
I read another post at a different site concerning warpage of the 13" MacBook caused with this 64068F Kensington Microsaver notebook security lock. I read there is a fix--file the "T" bar down about one milimeter (about the thickness of a credit card) to correct the problem. I own a 13" MacBook and an older version of this Kensington security lock and have no problems....more info
  • Incompatible with 13" MacBook, hard to operate
I just bought one of these at our University Bookstore, and returned it a week later.

    * I used it on my 13" MacBook, it pulled and warped the exterior plastic each time I locked the computer, enough so that it wouldn't surprise me if continued usage of this lock would permanently damage the MacBook casing.

    * A store employee who recommended the product tried to show me how to "correctly" use the lock. Not only did it warp the plastic for him, too, but to his apparent surprise, it also took him several frustrating minutes just to get the lock on and off. He indicated that the quality appears to have dropped considerably from the Kensington unit he had previously purchased.

Thus, I cannot recommend this product for 13" MacBook users. Users of other computer models may wish to exercise caution when purchasing as well....more info
  • Hard to use, keys kinda big
Maybe it's just me, or where the locking slot is my docking station, but it's awfully hard to get the darned key to turn. You have to push in and compress the rubber ring to get the key to turn. Difficult in an awkward space. And the keys are biggish for use on a key chain. Ended up not using it for docking station use - will use it only when traveling, which means it'll rarely get used.

  • Does its job
So it took me a few minutes to figure out how to line up the little pins and the head thingy. Once I had that under control, this works just fine. Inserts and removes easily and the cord doesn't get in the way. Just goes about its business and does what it is supposed to do....more info
  • Looped to bedframe
I just got back from a two week vacation and I used this lock for the first time. I looked all over the place and aside from the plumbing under the sinks -- which didn't seem like a good idea -- the only place I could loop it to was the bedframe. This is in no way critical of the device; just you might want to consider what you're going to attach it to.

The only flaw was a bit of a burr in the cable sticking through the plastic coating, which I filed down. You might want to inspect it when you take it out of the box so you don't get surprised and bleed all over the place.

The cable is of course vulnerable if a thief has a substantial pair of cutters; I lost a bicycle locked with the same kind of cable many years back. But this seems like a good-enough product, considering that limitation.

  • It works
It's a good lock. The cable is much thicker than some other cheap locks, which would probably serve more as a deterrent than an actual safety measure. And it locks your computer, which is, of course, what you want....more info
  • I can finally pee!
Nothing sucks more than when you are sipping on some tea studying at a coffee shop and you need to go pee. However, you don't want to leave your lab top unattended. Thank god I now have this cable to secure my investment. Its lightweight and convenient. ...more info
  • Works as advertised.
I bought it to work on laptop being used to control an environmental chamber, and all I had to do was take it out of the package and implement it right away. The laptop was a few years old, and the lock fit in no problem, and the orientation of the wire off the lock rotates 360 degrees so there will never be a problem with the positon....more info
  • fast
Fast delivery, but the package was badly mistreated by the delivery company. However, the cable itself and the contents were in excellent condition....more info
