Stanley Kramer's sprawling 1963 comedy about a search for buried treasure by at least a dozen people--all played by well-known entertainers of their day--is the kind of mass comedy that Hollywood hasn't made in many years. (Another example from around the same time is Blake Edwards's The Great Race.) After a number of strangers (including Milton Berle, Jonathan Winters, Sid Caesar, Phil Silvers, and others) witness a dying stranger (Jimmy Durante) identify the location of hidden money, a conflict-ridden hunt begins, watched over carefully by a suspicious cop (Spencer Tracy). The ensuing two and a half hours of mayhem has its ups and downs--some bits and performers are certainly funnier than others. But Kramer, who is better known for socially conscious, serious cinema (Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?), is in a mood for broad comic characterization, and some of his jokes are so intentionally obvious (Durante literally kicks a bucket when he dies), they'd have a place in Airplane! Watch for lots of cameo appearances, including Jerry Lewis (who had called Kramer and asked him why he hadn't been invited to participate). --Tom Keogh

- This DVD is flwed
Like many of you, this is one of my favorite movies of all times. I bought the DVD a couple of years ago, and although it wasn't a 'perfect' copy, it was suitable for my needs. Missing was the overture, color timing, and a number a 'jittering scenes' probably due to the conversion to DVD process. The extra 'behind the scenes' feature is well worth the price of the DVD, however, if you are looking for perfection- you will not find it here. Last week, 8/25/07, Turner Classic Movies Cable Channel did present the "PERFECT" COPY. Why this copy didn't make it to the DVD, I would like to know. This had the overture, intermission & exit music- along with all of the extra scenes that had been chopped out of the movie years ago. Colors in the opening credits were vibrant and changes as when presented in the theater- and is in Wide Screen. And although this was shown on the Cinerama Screens, it was not filmed in Cinerama- but in Ultra-Panavision (which is a different film technology altogether). I 'DVR"ed this copy and plan to transfer it to a DVD soon. If you love this movies as an event, as much as I, make sure you DVR this movie the next time it's on Turner Classic Movies. This is the 2nd time I've seen it so they probably run it again. Please check out this link for more info- and scrool down to VERSIONS:
- Great slap stick comedy
I love this movie. It was one of my family's favorite movies when we were kids (in the days before video or DVD). The jokes are so funny like when Jimmy Durante dies and "kicks the bucket". Such a terrific cast and cameos but I always wished the had other great comedy personalities in this such as Lucille Ball and more to have been involved in the movie. Guess you can't have it all! Buy this and you'll never be sorry you did!...more info
You will never stop laughing with this one, it's a crazy comedy with all the classic stars included....more info
- "An all-time comedy classic"
Even though this movie was released 46 years ago,it has held up rather well-You had a veritable who's who of comedy:Milton Berle,Phil Silvers,Buddy Hackett,& Jonathan Winters just to name a few-Loved the cameo appearances of folks such as Jack Benny,Jerry Lewis,& The Three Stooges-This is definitely family-friendly & age appropriate....more info
- It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World
This version of the film has been edited, leaving some of the nice little gags out, such as the man popping off Phil Silvers' steering wheel, and Mickey Rooney dumping water on Buddy Hackett in the airplane...suddenly the cut back to the scene, Buddy is wet but you don't know why if you haven't seen the uncut version before. This is not the version for the true fans of this flick. I don't understand why the company who transferred the film chose to cut out little funny scenes but kept the tedious intermission with it's blank screen and theme music...omitting this instead could have saved the original humour and flow of the film.
- Greatest Comedy of all Time
This movie is really funny. I saw it the first time on my first date in the 60s. I laughed so hard I was really embarrased. Now I watch it with my grandchild who really enjoys it. Great cast. Great directing. The script is terrific as the story keeps building to an outlandish finale....more info

- Glad it's Mad
If it isn't already, this is certainly destined to be a cult film.
Some of my favorite scenes:
Jerry Lewis running over Spencer Tracy's hat. Lewis' facial expressions are a delight.
Phil Silvers waving bye-bye in the rear view mirror to Jonathan Winters
after ditching him in the desert.
Jonathan Winters wrecking the service station.
A heavily hung-over Jim Backus on the pool table as Mickey Rooney and Buddy Hackett try to revive him.
And of course, beatniks Dick Shawn and the dead-pan Barrie Chase shakin'
it up to the Shirelles' kooky lyrics:
"Got a baby who can give me 31 flavors,
and we like tutti-frutti best,
I call him Ice Cream Joe,
he is the most delicious boy I know,
everytime his tasty lips are kissing mine,
he gives me 31 flavors,
and we like tutti-frutti best,
I just love him so,
he's my confectionary Ice Cream Joe,
everytime I kiss him I feel mighty fine,
I love his 31 flavors,
and we like tutti-frutti best,
pineapple fruit - coconut and banana, some of the fruit,
chocolate too, and tell him right that when we kiss,
he give me 31 flavors,
and we like tutti-frutty best..."
A truly Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad scene. Gotta love it!
- It's wild, wild!
It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (Stanley Kramer, 1963)
Of Stanley Kramer's major films, It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World has probably been the most neglected, and that's a shame. It is truly epic in scope, it's much deeper than it first seems, and if you're looking for an all-star cast, it's pretty hard to beat this one; there are at least twenty well-known actors (not all of them comics) credited, and if you watch closely, you may well see another twenty people you recognize in cameos (Jack Benny, Minta Durfee, and Jerry Lewis are just the best-known of the bunch). Adam Baldwin once said of the movie that everyone who was anyone in comedy in 1963 is represented in this movie, and it's pretty hard to come up with anyone they overlooked.
The wafer-thin plot centers around $350,000 buried by Smiler Grogan (Jimmy Durante). After a road accident, Grogan kicks the bucket (quite literally, one of the movie's least subtle, and yet best, sight gags), but not before revealing the location of the treasure to a number of people who'd stopped to help him-- Russell Finch (Milton Berle), Benjy Benjamin (Buddy Hackett), Dingy Bell (Mickey Rooney), Melville Crump (Sid Caesar), and Lennie Pike (Jonathan Winters). These five, along with a number of female travelling companions (the finest of whom is Finch's mother-in-law, played by Ethel Merman in a truly grand performance), begin an every-man-for-himself race to the treasure, all the while tracked by the police chief (Spencer Tracy) of the town whose cops were tailing Grogan originally. Along the way, others get roped into the chase, and the whole thing takes on a monstrous, Rube Goldbergian mien.
Running just shy of three hours, this is a movie that, on the surface, stands out simply because it runs just shy of three hours-- who on earth would make a three-hour comedy, and worse, a three-hour comedy that's all slapstick and sight gags? (And Kramer's previous film was Judgment at Nuremberg, to give you some historical context.) Everything about this movie screams "hate me," which is why it's even more intriguing that it's so very likable-- I can't tell you the number of people I know, or whose reviews I've read, that have said something like "this movie encapsulates everything about American big-budget comedy, and yet it's hysterical." Indeed. The reason for this is that this isn't your basic Three Stooges short-- there's far more under the hood in this movie than it's often given credit for. It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World is Erich von Stroheim's Greed with a nasty Sterno addiction living on skid row. Like most of the comedies I truly adore, this movie is, at its core, mean to the point of brutality. From the moment the five men and their respective companions decide to stop working together, the movie takes on a tinge of bitterness that, one feels, were it unearthed would paint a wide black swath over the celluloid. These characters, to a one, including those who get roped in later (the sole exception is Sylvester, the rather simpleminded son of Merman's character, played wonderfully by Dickie Shawn), show themselves for the morally bankrupt swine they are, and thus, when the inevitable denouement occurs, we can heartily cheer. Because we're not supposed to like these people, though we do. Topping it all off is Ernest Gold's wonderfully chaotic Oscar-nominated soundtrack, which is all the punctuation this movie needs.
It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World is a great film. Great, I tell you, great. **** ?

- Loved it as a teen, Loved it as a retiree
I saw this film the week it was released at the Cinerama Dome in Hollywood. The walls of the theater literally vibrated with the laughter. I watched it again last week on DVD, 44 years later, but laughed in the same spots. Plot? What plot - a bunch of wacky 50's & 60's comedians try to best each other on a treasure hunt. The lot of them thrown together is what the word "Juxtaposition" was invented for. Who would think of casting Ethel Merman, Terry Thomas, Spencer Tracy and the Three Stooges in the same film? But it works! Enjoy....bg...more info

- It's a Mad, Mad, Mad... It's a Must... !
Although there are a few excellent Comedies made in the fifties and sixties, "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World" is unbeatable, unforgettable and a remarkable movie production identifying the many traditional American life and family values besides those not so respectable ones. Behavior, Ambition, Consciousness, Cheat & Trick... they are all there. A very funny story made in a very intelligent way. Does it sound too serious? Couldn't be so easy and amusing, yet fast going with something new and unexpected at every second scene!
Undoubtless my favorite movie ever!
- Scattershot Laughs In Cinemascope Comic Epic
"It's A Mad, Mad,Mad ,Mad World" is a curio for sure. With it's sheer size and scope things could have either gone entirely right or completely awry. Steven Spielberg's "1941" comes to mind. The large cast of comics on hand are more than adequate but with everybody elbowing each other for space nobody truly distinguishes themselves. Despite some good large scale set pieces, Jonathan Winters demolishing a garage, Mickey Rooney and Buddy Hackett piloting an out of control airplane, Sid Caesar and Edie Adams destroying a hardware store, the two funniest moments are a banana peel joke and a kick-the-bucket gag. It was inspired to cast the taciturn Spencer Tracy to anchor the comic mayhem. The ultimate fun in this film is spotting the talent on hand, either featured or in cameos. I particularly got a kick out of identifying the voice of George O'Hanlon on a police intercom. O'Hanlon later was the voice of George on "The Jetsons"....more info
- It's a funny funny funny funny movie
Think of a huge ensemble of the major comics of the day, throw in Spencer Tracy (in his last - a comical - role), situations that defy the imagination and you've got a great comedy. Never a dull moment and you get to see where some of the greats of the genre came from....more info
- No movie is funnier.
No matter how many times we watch this movie, the laughter is still the same. One of the best - if not THE best - classic comedies ever made....more info
- Disapointed in tape.
I ordered the movie "It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World on tape because it was supposed to have closed captions. The tape version was the closest to the original movie. it was a 2-tape set. My wife requires closed captions. Tape #1 was without closed captions. # 2 had it. The seller tried to make things right by sending another copy of tape #1. It too, was without closed captions. My wife and I have been wanting to see this movie in it's entirety for a long time. The DVD's are missing almost 30 minutes from the original. The tape are only missing 11 minutes from the original. My only chance to see the entire movie will be when it comes on TCM again, don't know when.... The problems were NOT the fault of the seller. rather the people who made the tapes. Thank you....more info

- Love the laughs, but I agree the format needs improvement
I agree with everyone here, this is one of the funniest movies ever made. I'm with the other guy who said there was originally 192 minutes in the 1963 premiere - and the aspect ratio was 2.76:1. I have never seen a video release that was ever done correctly, with this running length and aspect ratio. MGM, let's do a full-on correct release finally of this great classic, with every frame restored and packed with special features. Maybe even a featurette on Cinerama and the overall history of widescreen movies would be a good addition on Disc 2. Hey fellow fans, how do we get a letter-writing campaign started at MGM? It worked for Superman II!...more info
