Kathy Bates stars as an unhappy wife trying to get her husband's attention in this amusing and moving 1991 screen adaptation of Fannie Flagg's novel Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe. After befriending a lonely old woman (Jessica Tandy), Bates hears the story of a lifelong friendship between two other women (Mary Stuary Masterson and Mary-Louise Parker, seen in flashback) who once ran a cafe in town against many personal odds. The tale inspires Bates to take further command over her life, and there director Jon Avnet (Up Close and Personal), in his first feature, has fun with the film. Bates develops a real attitude toward her thickheaded spouse at home and some uppity girls in a parking lot, but dignity is generally the key to Avnet's approach with the story's crucial relationships. Tandy is a joy and clearly loves the element of mystery attached to her character, and Masterson and Parker are excellent in the historical sequences. --Tom Keogh

  • Fried Green Tomatoes
Glad I'd read the book before I saw the movie - it helped me get oriented. I'm also glad the author wrote the screenplay - it was mostly true to the book, which was great. The movie was well crafted, well acted, and true to the South. It's a "keeper". ...more info

  • Fried Green Tomatoes
Love this movie. Evelyn Couch (Bates) meets Ninny Theradgoode (Tandy) in a nursing home that leads to an unexcepted friendship. Ninny tells her a story of 2 women who lived half a century ago in the town of Whistle Stop. Idgie (Masterson) and Ruth (Parker) became close friends that lasted a lifetime. Idgie is an independent women standing up for herself and her friend to "men" during a time when a women's place was in the home. Evelyn is inspired to take a look at her life and make drastic changes, often with hilarious results. It makes you take a look at your own life and search yourself to see if you are such a friend. This story speaks of a simpler time and the strength of the human spirit that our forebearers had and how it still exists today!...more info
  • The BEST chick-flick I have ever seen.
This movie depicts the stamina and the power to love which women of all ages possess. I identify with the young women who find true joy in a shared friendship with another woman. I connect heart to heart with the middle-aged woman, played by Kathy Bates, as she tries to resurrect her true identity which has been stifled by never ending service to a self centered husband. My heart melts as the wiser kinder older woman, played by Jessica Tandy, worms her way into the view's heart as one who understands life and is willing to share herself and her memories of a time gone by. My all-time favorite movie!...more info
  • Has everything
This movie has everything! Love, hate, devotion, forgiveness, humor, loyalty and a parade of some of the finest actresses in the business. A friend loved the character 'Idgie' so much that her dog is named 'Idgie'. The characters do have a lot of impact, and the story is well planned out with the flashbacks. I wasn't lost one moment during the trips through memory lane. I was almost saddened to think that there wasn't a real 'whistle stop' that served fried green tomatoes near me...

  • A Life Forever Changed... the end of the trilogy...
Have you ever watched a movie so many times, that it becomes embedded into you? You know every line and all the characters, as if it had all really happened to your life? Fried Green Tomatoes is one of those movies for me. Also, I think you will be surprised at the "real" connections my family has to the film.

Fannie Flag wrote a book about a peculiar little town called whistlestop. The newspaper has a fit about a comet falling from the sky, and all of the locals are in a dither. I live not ten minutes from there. It's in Irondale Alabama. Just a few months ago I ate in the cafe again. Its a neat place with home cooked vegitables and your choice of two meats. (Big spenders add pie.)

My Aunt Ida Hathcock was one of the afore mentioned peculiar citizens. She had some whopper stories, let me tell you. But according to her, all true. Crazy bulls that pinned people to walls - fireblazin' preachers that saw the world as the lake of fire, judging at will - (While they cheated on their wives behind the church). She was a hoot. I say all that to say, she knew the original characters Miss Flagg wrote the book about... Moonshine and all. How few are the treasured stories that remain.

The Film is one of my favorites. And is easily the best "chick-flick" ever made in my opinion. Thats not just because of my relation to the stories, I had seen the movie atleast twenty times before the connection was made about Aunt Ida.

Ninny is a lady in a nursing home that sees poor Evelyn crying her eyes out on the flower patterned love-seat, looking aweful, scarfing down candy bars. Ninny, seeing an opportunity to help the poor woman, sinks the hook of a great story, leading Evelyn to pry deeper. Ninny, "Just sit there, and I'll tell you all about it." Murder, conspiracy, true love amongst friends, racism, loss and hope are just a few subjects skimming the surface of this wonderful tale. I love it.

I could write a book, scene by scene, on the different takes and angles I have on this film. But, now is not the day for that. I'll think about that tomorrow. (-S.O.)

If there is one great moral to the story, it is the one that I have learned with my Great Aunt Ida. These people live, they have wonderful adventures, touch the world, then pass. In scripture it says to seek councel from the wise. Maybe listening to a few whopper tales wouldn't hurt either. (Sir Adam of Scots)...more info

    Fried Green Tomatoes DVD

Fried Green Tomatoes is based on the novel Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe. Even though the movie would have you believe that it takes place in Alabama, it was shot in Julliette, Georgia, a little north of Macon, and they still serve fried green tomatoes. Y'all come and eat you some, they're delicious..

Jessica Tandy is simply superb as a resident of a nursing-home, reliving her life to a an unhappy housewife who is a happenstance visitor.

Highly recommended for any one who has friends or family in a nursing home and fans of Jessica Tandy.

Cicely Tyson has about five seconds of time in the movie. I don't know why they bothered. You can ignore all that racial scatalogical matter, that's just Hollywood.

  • A beautiful illustration painted by talented artists
Fried Green Tomatoes is truly a beautiful movie. The senses are flooded with superior video and sound, the characters are compelling through excellent acting, and the heart is warmed through the wonderful story. Although many of the unpleasant traits of human beings are in evidence, notably racism, these scenes are done in a manner that is counterbalanced and overshadowed by the positive human characteristics and relationships that dominate the film.

Fried Green Tomatoes seeks, and draws out, the best qualities in people; and viewers can not only discern and identify with the characters, they can identify with the emotions inside them that make them beautiful. It is a film about loving and giving with touches of sadness and true human comedy in between.

Mary Stuart Masterson "makes" the film and compliments the superb acting of her fellow cast members. But none of this could have happened without the superior directing of Jon Avnet who illustrates and paints this story and then saturates our senses with every aspect of this beautiful film. ...more info
