Product Description

Ever since Barack Obama was young, Hope has lived inside him. From the beaches of Hawaii to the streets of Chicago, from the jungles of Indonesia to the plains of Kenya, he has held on to Hope. Even as a boy, Barack knew he wasn't quite like anybody else, but through his journeys he found the ability to listen to Hope and become what he was meant to be: a bridge to bring people together.

This is the moving story of an exceptional man, as told by Nikki Grimes and illustrated by Bryan Collier, both winners of the Coretta Scott King Award. Barack Obama has motivated Americans to believe with him, to believe that every one of us has the power to change ourselves and change our world.

  • It is what it is
Before I get into this review, let me say that books of this kind are nothing unusual. In the 1800s, schoolchildren read texts that glorified George Washington and Abraham Lincoln (the cherry tree, walking miles to return a book, etc.) as a means of inspiring patriotism and as examples of positive initiative for them to follow. In my own childhood in the late 1960s and early 1970s, I read similar texts on Martin Luther King and John F. Kennedy, as well as many others. In that respect, this book is no different. I'm sure that at the time, British loyalists, Confederate sympathizers, and those who disliked King and Kennedy had the same complaints about those books in their day.

Overall, taking this book as it is, it's clear intention is to use Obama's story written on a children's level to inspire them in the same fashion as the above mentioned books. We have the well known tales of Obama's confusion of his identity, the absence of his father, and the example his mother and grandparents set for him, and most everyone by now knows the rest. The presentation of young Obama's goal of uniting the various sectors of American society comes off as more admirable than worshipful to me.

Granted, those who are not inclined toward Obama's politics will not want this for their children (just as today's Democratic parents would be disinclined toward the current children's book on John McCain). But consider this book with an open mind and take it for what it is-a child's biography of Barack Obama-not a brainwashing guide for the future Obama nation....more info

Barack Obama: Son of Promise, Child of Hope

This book was very inspiring. My 5 year old saw this book in her School's Library and asked to check the book out. When she brought it home I was happy that not only was she excited about finding it in the Library but that also she was excited about me reading it to her from start to finish. I promised her that I would buy this book for her so that we could add this book to her little world of History and that she may feel proud of the first African American President of the United States in a way that she could understand him. ...more info

  • swill...
absolute swill. It's deeply disturbing that an american publisher would be so blinded by the money to be made, that they'd be willing to put their name to this. Unadultered propaganda, full of conceit and fantasy... what gall it takes to put this in front of 5, 6 and 7 year old children. BO sees the ghosts of MLK & JFK ? why is this the first we are hearing of this ? Obama himself and the DNC ought to be ashamed, but i guess that's the problem that makes this book possible, a lack of shame. It goes beyond simple politics, way over the line, to worship. This book encourages the idea that Obama should be worshipped. What happens when the 5 year old who had it given to him for Christmas, or read to him on inauguration day at school, learns as an 8 year old of a presidential failure or character flaw-induced incident...he is human, that will happen...where will the adults, who made money by telling children that obama should be worshipped, be then ? will they be around to pick up any pieces ? It's never a good idea to tell children that adults are worthy of worship...isn't our culture already too star-struck...too willing to overlook any lack of character as long as they can continue the euphoria of the gazing... the words 'hell in a hand basket' come to mind......more info
  • A Model for Children
This picture book for elementary aged children tells an amazing story about Barack Obama. The President's story is inherently unique and fascinating, so it's a delight to see it told for children. Although the stylized drawings are not my favorite style, they are detailed and appealing. Young children will find this inspirational American story and the illustrations engaging....more info
  • You have GOT to be kidding me..........
I didn't read the book. I passed by it as I shopped at Target and then browsed thru its pages. The title stopped me in my tracks and simply made me want to gag. Obviously the liberals have no shame at all. Despite what the title may imply (and what libs want us to believe), Obama is NOT the new messiah. Politically, the man hasn't accomplished a thing at all, except hypnotizing the most unthinking sector of the US.

GAG. Do the libs think we're all in awe and in, as another reviewer nicely put it, "breathless worship" of the man? If someone published a book about a conservative with such a title, it would make national news and liberals would RABIDLY (and yet euphorically) use the book as an example to demonstrate how conservatives are such duped, dopey "sheep."

Want to be a smarter, better-informed American? Start with reading the Weekly Standard magazine. And absolutely do not pass up an opportunity to read McCain's book Character is Destiny - that will show you the humble yet steel-girded soul of the opposing candidate who was never once peddled as the new messiah. GASP! Conservative DO have brains!...more info
  • You have got to be kidding!!!
I am absolutely disgusted. Racism and complete media bias is the only reason this type of propaganda is allowed to exits. Child brainwashing has begun.

My child will never be allowed to waste his time with this garbage.

It is insane that anyone could waste brain power creating, or reading, such a monstrosity. The Obama cool aid must have been flowing deep.

Son of promise, Child of Hope - AhMen. This just stinks!...more info

  • So Sad
What a shame. I was sure that the "anointed one" would have walked on water as a youth. Is he saving that miracle for a more glorious occasion? Perhaps he will walk across the Potomac and into the White House. Save us Barack! Perform a miracle...turn America into France!! This type of adoration for a man who has done nothing significant in his lifetime, makes me sick to my stomach. ...more info
  • Barack Obama: Son of Promise, Child of hope
Very Informative books for children. The illustrator did a wonderful job as well. I am an Educator and would recommend this book to all Educators. I used this book during my writing block while we were on the Unit of Informational Writing. The children loved the book and gained a lot of knowledge. I bought one book and had to go back and buy 10 more and give them away as Christmas 08 gifts for some deserving friends and my pastor who all have children. What a great book at a awesome price. Thanks Amazon!...more info
  • If you don't buy this book, then you must hate America!
Obama. Messiah. These two words are just meant to go together. Obama is our savior, and those faithful to him will be rewarded, just as all faith is always rewarded.

Yea, my children, if you love America, buy this book. If you hate America, then don't buy it. You will be tallied accordingly by the Department of Homeland Security.

As much as I love Obama, and his depictions in this book, I must sadly give it one star. Now that doesn't mean that you shouldn't buy this book, please buy it! But the one star review is consistent with my belief that this book does not portray Obama in quite enough of a messianic light. Obama is the creator and sustainer of the entire universe, not just the US, and this book should depict him as such.

Nevertheless, buy this book, especially for children. Every night, wrap your child in a warm comfy American flag and read them this book, taking extra care to point out the rays of light emanating from Obama's scalp. We need to indoctrinate our kids quickly and effectively, before the terrorists do!...more info
