"Her writing is eloquent and her passion tremendous."

--Publishers Weekly

¡°Brigitte Gabriel's words should be read, and studied carefully, by all the law enforcement and government officials of the West -- as well as by everyone who values freedom.¡±

-- Robert Spencer, author of The Politically Incorrect Guide to Islam (and the Crusades)

Brigitte Gabriel lost her childhood to militant Islam, when militant Muslims from throughout the Middle East poured into Lebanon and declared jihad against the Lebanese Christians. Because They Hate warns that the US is threatened by fundamentalist Islamic theology in the same way Lebanon was¡ª radical Islam will stop at nothing short of domination of all non-Muslim countries.

Fiercely articulate and passionately committed, Because They Hate?tells Gabriel's?personal story as well as outlines the history, social movements, and religious divisions that have led to this critical historical conflict.

BRIGITTE GABRIEL is a US-based journalist and news producer who started her career as an anchor for World News, an evening Arabic news program. As a terrorism expert and the founder of the nonprofit organization ACT! for America, Brigitte Gabriel travels widely and speaks regularly on topics related to the Middle East. She has addressed audiences at the FBI, the United States Special Operations Command, the Parliament of the United Kingdom of Great Britain, and the Joint Forces Staff College, among others.

Customer Reviews:

As a CAPT in the US Navy, I have been in Iraq and have seen first hand people who are under Islam will do. The book "They Must Be Stopped" is an outstanding begining book that looks up front and close at the enemy of our world. I recommend this book to everyone who wants to understand the truth about Islam. I also recommend a book called "The Link": The Secret Relationship between Saddam and al Qaida is available for sale on in soft cover. If you like to read more. ...more info

  • "Long May It Wave 101"
Every United States citizen should read this
book, "Because They Hate," by Brigitte Gabriel.

It's written so well that it commands you not
to put it down! You get all involved in it,
as you might with a good mystery novel.

But the main message is one of serious warning.
This is a first hand, factual account, of the
way Islam works to take over the world, and I
do mean that they intend USA to be a part of
    their dictatorship.

If you still have doubts as to the danger of

  • A bit disjointed and incomplete, but what do you expect?
Books like this are always fun, when you read the reviews of them on Amazon or other places. The reviews are always "objective", which means that there are a bunch that give the book five stars, a bunch one star, and hardly any in between. Everyone either loves it or hates it.

The current book, by Brigitte Gabriel, is a semi-memoir/editorial which mostly deals with Islam. The author was a child when the Lebanese Civil War started, and she experienced hardship and suffering (she and her parents lost their house, and she and her mother were injured in attacks) at the hands of local Muslim extremists who she says wanted to exterminate Christian communities in Lebanon. She wound up fleeing to Israel (her parents were elderly, and died) and then came to the U.S. after marrying an American journalist. She recounts all of this in the first hundred pages or so of this book, spending a lot of time on her childhood. As her story progresses, she pauses to inject asides on current affairs involving the extremist Arab world, then returns to her story. By the time she's in Israel marrying her boyfriend, the editorials have taken over the memoir, and the rest of the book is one long editorial and call to action.

Gabriel's point is rather simple and straightforward. Islam isn't composed exclusively of extremists, but moderates don't do much to prevent extremism in their community, and do a lot to assist the extremists. She cites the lack of condemnation regarding various episodes since 9/11, and the amount of protest at various actions of the U.S. government (eg Gitmo, invasion of Iraq, trials of various terrorists, racial profiling, etc.) as evidence that Muslim groups in the U.S. are more interested in supporting extremists than they are in condemning their actions.

The book itself is somewhat poorly organized, and has a conversational tone to it which gives it immediacy, but also robs it of some of the authority it would otherwise have. The author also on occasion ignores aspects of the subjects she's talking about which don't advance her thesis. So for instance, she simplifies the nature of the Lebanese Civil War to Muslim vs. Christian, when it was sometimes not that. Frankly, I find the whole argument a bit tiring, in this regard. One of the reviewers of this book comments that Lebanon has had an election (in which Hezbollah got a large number of votes) and then insists that this makes Lebanon a democracy. Usually, more than one election, especially in a country like that, is necessary to prove that a democracy exists.

The author is, like many immigrants to this country, somewhat more patriotic than native-born citizens, and more impatient with those who complain about their rights being violated. Her list of things to be done in the back of the book would probably be viewed as outrageous by anyone other than strong conservatives here in the states. Especially outrageous is the instruction she wants to give to make sure that our children's textbooks aren't explicitly anti-American. While it's not a bad idea, you'd never get it past liberals or even moderates here in the states.

I liked this book for the most part, and other than the problems I had with the way it was constructed, thought it well-written. Amusing to see everyone be at one end or the other on it.

  • A Book for all Truly Patriotic Americans
Brigette Gabriel does an awesome job of showing what Islam really intends to do on a world scale. I have been researching Islam for over a year, and this book only adds the personal testimony of a person who has lived through the result of ignorance regarding Islamic intentions. I anxiously await the next book to be written. If Brigette comes to my area I will definitely go to see and hear her myself.

  • Good read with an important lesson.
I enjoyed this book, especially the first half or so. I couldn't help but be moved by Gabriel's first hand account of life in Lebanon under siege. While I agree with Gabriel that Islam is a dangerous religion that needs to be stopped (hopefully through reason and education), she is too quick to conclude that Christianity is the solution. While Christianity isn't as harsh in it's treatment of apostates, it is still harsh. I think most Christians would summarize their belief as t the Creator of the Universe takes an active interest in me, approves of me, loves me, and will reward me after death; my current beliefs, drawn from scripture, will remain the best statement of the truth until the end of the world; everyone who disagrees with me will spend eternity in hell. The Muslim faith just takes things one step further in its dogma and threatens apostates with death. Replacing one religion with another one is not the answer. These primitive tribal beliefs systems (a.k.a. religions) need to be exposed to the harsh light of reality before it kills us....more info

I have never felt compelled to write a book review on Amazon, even though I read a ton of books. This book, however, I found to have opened my eyes, educated me in a way that only a first hand survivor could, such as Brigitte, and found it to be a must read for all Americans. I highly recommend you take the time to read this book. I believe our life as we know it depends on us understanding what really is going on around us and therefore we can see what is truly at stake, and what is probably the driving force behind Brigitte writing her books. She's lived it before and she sees it happening again in America and she is trying to get others in America to see what she sees through experience....more info

  • A frightening but pertinent and timeous warning
In this frightening but pertinent and timeous warning this courageous woman of truth and vision, Brigitte Gabriel, warns the USA and the world of the danger faced by Islamo-Fascism, and how ignoring or appeasing this threat will result in the ruthless and bloody islamification of the USA and other Western societies unless we face this cancer and act now.

Gabriel points out how "Today, radical Islam's war rages with varying degrees of intensity throughout the world, not only against Christians and Jews in the West but also against Hindus, Buddhists, Copts, indeed all non-Muslim infidels. The radical Islamists decree of zealotry even has them attacking other denominations within Islam itself. Islamic radicals are instigating and perpetuating terrorist campaigns, insurgencies, civil wars, minority suppression and ethnic cleansing and/or genocide in Afghanistan, Algeria, Bangladesh, Belgium, Chad, Chechnya, Dagestan, Denmark, Egypt, Ethiopia, Gambia, Great Britain, India, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Kashmir, Kenya, Kosovo, Lebanon, Macedonia, Mali, Mauritania, Morocco, the Netherlands, Niger, Nigeria, Pakistan, territories administered by the Palestinian authority, Philippines, Qatar, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Senegal, Somalia, Spain, Sudan, Syria, Tanzania, Tunisia, Turkey, the United States of America, Yemen and Zanzibar".

Brigitte Gabriel, lived as a ten year old girl through the terror as of Muslims from across the world flooded into Lebanon to wage a bloody and ruthless jihad against Lebanese Christians in which over 60 000 Lebanese Christian men, women and children were butchered. A horrific exercise in ethnic cleansing that was ignored by the world and by those who's self-proclaimed task was to stand up for human rights.

Gabriel recounts her idyllic childhood in a peaceful and cosmopolitan land before the PLO and Lebanese Muslims launched a war against Lebanon's Christian population.
They were joined by Muslim terrorists pouring into Lebanon from as far afield as Somalia, Syria, Iran, Jordan, Iraq, Libya and Egypt. Lebanon was turned overnight into a killing field.
Christian leftists who fought alongside the Palestinians for greater Islamic control over Lebanon, were so-blinded by their ideologically motivated self-righteousness that they did not see that they too as much targets as the general Christian population.
In Lebanon every person carried an identity document that identified their religion and what sect of religion they belonged to. Cars were stopped at PLO or Muslim, and if the Palestinians or Muslims realized that the occupants the cars were sprayed with bullets and the entire families inside, killed, with shouts of "Allahu Akbar".

Gabriel remembers her years as a frightened and starving child in a bomb shelter as missiles rained on her village from a nearby Muslim town.

Gabriel outlines the history of the 1982 Lebanon War from the perspective a victim of Palestinian/ Islamic ethnic cleansing and explains how Israel's eventual intervention (in response to murderous attacks by the PLO from Lebanon into Israel), was welcomed by the Christian Lebanese desperate to be rescued from the hideous genocide the Palestinians and Muslims, with the support of Syria, were inflicting on them.
Gabriel explains how Israel provided health care to all Lebanese, Christian and Muslims, and even Palestinians. They were treated free of charge in Israeli hospitals.
After Gabriel's mother was critically injured in a PLO shelling attack, she was transported to an Israeli hospital, where Gabriel recounts her amazement at the great kindness and love shown her by Israelis, who the Islamo-Leftist media had been so demonized in the eyes of Lebanese population by the Arab media and Islamo-Leftist PR propaganda machine.

Gabriel discovered how the Palestinian propaganda could not have been further from the truth, and that she had been told a fabricated lie by her government and culture about the Israel that was the opposite of reality
Israeli Jews were the only people in the world who realized what the Christian Lebanese were going through.

The Israelis were able to bring peace to the area and drive out the terrorists. Lebanon had been turned into a base of terror, but as always Israel was condemned for defending itself and the victims (both the Israelis and Christian Lebanese) were painted by the world media as the criminals.
The skirmish at the Sabra and Shatilla PLO camps in October 1982, in which several hundred Muslim terrorists from around the world, were killed (and a few civilian casualties) in a retaliation action by Christian Lebanese fighters provoked a hysterical world reaction. But the massacred of Christian Lebanese villagers, and the mass murder of Lebanese infants, children and women by the PLO and Muslim Lebanese for the seven years before that had elicited no reaction round the world whatsoever, as their continued atrocities would be ignored in the years to come.
She explains how the media fabricated lies and played a role as part of the PLO's propaganda machine in Lebanon and the The Land of Israel.

The second part of the book describes the presence of massive Islamic networks in the USA, how Arabic petro-dollars and nihilistic left wing ideologues use the media, civil society and universities in the USA to prepare the Islamic assault on the world's freedoms and demonize Israel and the West.
At universities across the USA students are being brainwashed in an anti-Western and Israel-hating diet that is shaping a hate-filled new generation. At university campuses murder of children is condoned and openly seen as justified by Muslim and hard left students.
Those who oppose the Islamo-Leftist nihilistic agenda are prevented from speaking at universities.

She clearly illustrates how Islamic radicals have made their goals of seizing power and imposing radical Islam clear to all. You can't read this book and not be ware of the threat the free world faces.
We are faced with a threat to the world as great as that faced by the Nazis in 1938, with the potential of death and destruction on a far greater scale than that of the Holocaust.
Gabriel explains how the USA and the West is being strangled by it's own political correctness.
As she so correctly points out : "There is no time for any more delusions. There is too much at stake. America needs to wake up from a gullible state of ignorant bliss, and start learning Islamic history. We must expose the truth and must get involved in ensuring that our elected officials have our support to throw political correctness in the garbage. We must clearly state that we are sick and tired of the lies and deception that we want to know the truth about the enemy we are fighting, and what we can do to win this war. Only then will we have a chance of winning this battle. Once our elected officials know that they can count on our support and not be demonized for stating the facts, they will be more courageous about coming out in the open and declaring war on our enemy."...more info
  • The book has many wrong translations, very weak
I just want to comment on one thing on this book that made me not even think about buying it. That is when Miss Gabriel translated the word "Qital" in Islam as it means slaughter and killing.
"Qital" does not by any means mean slaughter or killing. It means "Fight". Any fight that breaks between two groups of people is called "Qital". Also, when Quran ask Muslims to fight or prepare for fight, that is only in the concept of defense. Quran never ask or urges Muslims to attack others. You have to be very very expert in Arabic Language to understand Quran. And very obviously Miss Gabriel does not even have the basic understanding of the Arabic Language.

  • Interesting Story, Weakened By Radical Right-Wing Bent.
Brigitte Gabriel has no doubt gone through some powerful experiences as a Christian Lebanese woman. There is little doubt some of the atrocious stories she shares in her book, "Because They Hate," did and continue to take place in some corners of the world. But the impact of her message is lost when she herself resorts to a hateful dogma essentially calling for World War 3. Gabriel is almost like the Cuban exiles in Florida who denounce the repression of the Castro regime but fully back terrorist attacks on the island and civilians as long as it's "fighting Communism." Gabriel takes the same tone in her book, calling for even more disastrous military campaigns into possibly Iran. It is no wonder she is a featured speaker at many radical right-wing Christian events including CUFI, the notorious John Hagee cash cow used to promote Israeli aggression and expansion.

Gabriel frames her book around traumatic childhood experiences involving her family and persecution by Muslims of local Christian communities. She describes the horrific practice of mothers who's wombs are ripped open by militias, the fetuses taken out (a practice very common among U.S.-trained forces in El Salvador during the 1980s by the way). Gabriel is no doubt throwing meat to the lions of the Christian right, who believe we are in some cosmic battle against the Satanic forces of Islam. The main problem is that "Because They Hate" ironically makes you wonder about the deep-rooted hatred among those who celebrate Gabriel and her book.

The book essentially calls for fighting hate with more hate, read some of the reviews on this page and you'll find fans smashing Islam as "incompatable with Western values." Gabriel fails in her efforts to inform readers on the dangers of radicalist Islamic groups by creating a dangerous, toxic scenario of us (civilized Western Christians) against them (barbaric Muslim hordes). She quickly dismisses Israeli atrocities in the occupied territories or the fact that U.S. interventionism has played a great part in encouraging the rise of radical dogmas in the region. Consider that we overthrew Iran's only democratic government in the 1950s because it nationalized the nation's oil, or that Hezbollah gained strength in Lebanon after Israel basically destroyed the nation's infrastructure. Ronald Reagan didn't help much when he funded and armed the radical Islamic groups that later morphed into the Taliban and Al Qaeda in order to defeat the Soviets in Afghanistan (Reagan's CIA Director said he preferred Koran wavers to Communist atheists any day). These are crucial moments in history that the reader should know in order to understand "why they hate."

The sections where Gabriel touches on domestic policy are frightening fantasies taken from Mussolini's favorite daydreams. Gabriel encourages citizens to "report terrorist activities" or other suspicious going ons and that we must fight to promote "patriotic education" in our schools. Gabriel apparently believes that any form independent thinking is simply too dangerous and opens the door for Islamic radicalism to rush in (ironically, both Gabriel and Islamic radicals have a lot in common when it comes to these topics). She pretty much tells anyone who disagrees with the war in Iraq to shut up and "support the troops." Gabriel also promotes some bizarre fantasy that if we don't act soon, Muslim hordes will overtake America and destroy our democracy (eventhough George Bush has done quite a fine job at that thank you). Gabriel's evidence for this hypothesis is flimsy and uses some immigration data from Europe. So lock your doors and bolt the basement shut because the Muslims are coming!

So what are Gabriel's solutions? Basically more war, the U.S., Israel or both need to destroy Iran (why not Pakistan? They actually HAVE NUKES) and try to impose Western values on the region. How the U.S. could handle a third conflict she doesn't explain, or what happens if Islamic radicalism is even more inflamed from greater imperial interference?

There are some positive aspects to Gabriel's book, mostly when she condemns hateful practices by Muslim extremists, but she never feels compelled to condemn our own violence (starting with the invasion of Iraq which Gabriel praises). She champions the struggle of women to fight for more freedom in Islamic societies, which is also admirable. Of course she fails to mention that activist women's groups, such as in Iran, are desperately calling for an end to threats against the Islamic Republic considering outside interventionism never helps domestic groups calling for change.

Gabriel's book suffers from the same handicap of her good friend John Hagee's books, they make some valid points (Hagee denouncing anti-semitism for example), but then lose any real credibility when they detach themselves from reality and start trying to sell the reader this apocalyptic vision of good vs. evil. The political, cultural realities are much more complex and Gabriel fails to grasp that and instead resorts to hateful preaching against a particular religious group that caused her family harm. There is a creepy, ironically for a Middle Easter woman, colonial bent to the book in the way it tries to show the reader how OUR way, no matter how equally violent, is much better and should be adopted by the East if it wishes to progress. "Because They Hate" lacks any valuable scholarship, and instead just delivers more hate. ...more info

  • Because you are an infidel
The first part of this book reads like a thriller: a peaceful small town, a ten-year-old girl, then the Islamists make their move.

The striking things are the parallels with present-day America:

Lebanon was the only Arab democracy.
Lebanese people prided themselves on their apparently successful multiculturalism. They had all brands of Christianity and five kinds of Muslims: "the Shia, the Sunni, the Druze, the Alawis, and the Ismailis." (p. 11)
They were prosperous even though they produced no oil.
They were modern and progressive and wore modern Western clothes.
They (both Muslims and Christians, surprisingly enough) were taught to hate Israel and Jews.
They took in political asylum-seekers from Israel and Jordan.

    So, what happened?

The Islamists increased their population faster than the Christians. Soon, they began demanding "one man, one vote." The open-immigration policy exacerbated the problem.

The Muslims had never really accepted the Christians anyway, according to the author. The Christians did not realize this until it was too late. They thought they were all one big multicultural family.

The political asylum-seekers were also militant and wanted Lebanon purified. They killed every Christian they could.

"This hate was not because we had armies in the Middle East or because we supported Israel or for any of the reasons people easily turn to today. It was because we were Christian, infidels." (p. 33) "We didn't believe it either when the war started in Lebanon." (p. 220)

The Christians' only hope was to escape to America.

The question now is: Where are Americans going to escape to?

The Islamists cannot be appeased, mollified, or softened. One of the most revealing incidents is the story of a Muslim woman who had been injured. She was rescued by the Israelis, taken to an Israeli hospital, treated for 10 days--all free of charge. What was the woman's reaction? "I hate you all! I wish you were dead!" she snarled (p. 80). This is the enemy America faces.

"Why do they hate us? I have a very simple answer ... : because you are `infidels.'" (p. 19) As they keep telling us over and over. Maybe we should do the American Imams the courtesy of believing what they say.

The unfortunate truth of a misguided people (followers of Islam) continues to play havoc in the lives of Christians and other faiths around the world. Ms. Gabriel's heart wrenching story is just another sad example of how unprovoked hate has driven, for centuries, a society to murder and torture innocent people. This is an excellent and informative book that is a must read for everyone concerned about the rise of Islam in the US and all over the world. It is a wake up call. Brigitte details her secure and loving life in Lebanon and how it was shattered with the outbreak of the civil war, which was actually an Islamic jihad to take over and dominate the country. • "First Comes Saturday, then Comes Sunday"
There will be a moment, in reading "Because They Hate," when the force of Brigitte Gabriel's theme hits home. Suppose she's right. Suppose that Hezbolla's takeover of Lebanon truly does reflect the Muslim stranglehold foretold in the Qu'ran and the Hadith. Suppose that the hellish violence which the author endured as a young girl in a Christian town in southern Lebanon is what all of us in Western Civilization can expect when Muslims bring their jihad to our doors. After all, they hate us not because they envy our wealth, or because we are intolerant, or because we support Israel, nor for any of the rationalizations you may have heard. They hate us because we are "dhimmis," non-Muslim. Even if you are Muslim, they can hate you if you are not sufficiently devout for them.

Read "Because They Hate," and you will never again accept the moral equivalence argument. You will never again say or even think that Muslim fundamentalism is no worse than Christian fundamentalism, or Jewish orthodoxy. The fact is that they want to kill you and to destroy your democratic institutions. You are a dhimmi and it is their religious obligation to kill you. Every non-Muslim is an insult to Islam and may be killed with impunity; there is no such thing as an innocent Christian or Jew. If you think you know a moderate Muslim, ask him what motivates suicide bombers, the 911 hijackers, or televised beheadings, and that "moderate" will justify every act of violence one way or another. Here's how Gabriel puts "moral equivalence" into perspective. If a Christian preacher were to take out a contract on someone we'd be outraged. Yet Muslim imams commonly issue fatwas requiring the murder of journalists, politicians, and of course even cartoonists, and where's the moral outrage?

Gabriel watched, through the eyes of a teenage girl, the influx of Palestinian refugees, and the escalation of violence against Lebanese Christians as immigration altered he country's demographics. As long as Muslims were a minority, peace was maintained, but when Muslims became a majority, hellfire erupted around her. She watched her beautiful home destroyed, her father's restaurant destroyed, her friends killed, and the landscape bombarded. She watched the Lebanese civil war through the cracks in the bomb shelter which was her home for six years. She dragged her badly wounded mother back into the shelter after a rocket attack, and saved her life by getting her to a hospital in Israel. She watched as Israeli doctors and nurses cared for injured Christians and Muslims, even ahead of wounded Israeli soldiers, solely based on the severity of the patient's injuries.

Gabriel went on to become a war correspondent, then news anchor, in Israel. She married an American and emigrated to America. She doesn't want what happened to her childhood home happen to her new home. You may believe that the likelihood of widespread Muslim violence in America is a distant threat. The argument that the author makes is that the less we take Muslims at their word, the more conciliatory we are, the more tolerant we are, the more likely that day becomes. Actually, let's try a simple test. Ask a few Christian friends the meaning of "first comes Saturday, then comes Sunday." Then ask a few Muslims. Christians get it wrong every time, but Muslims don't; they know. It means that first we'll overthrow Israel and kill all the Jews (whose Sabbath is on Saturday), then we'll overthrow Western Civilization and kill all the Christians (whose Sabbath is Sunday). It is not Brigitte Gabriel who is warning you; it is the enemy itself who is.
