Wounded Deputy Kills Bank Robbery Suspect after Chase

PHELPS, N.Y. (AP) - A suspected bank robber was killed Wednesday in a shootout with a sheriff's deputy in a small town in western New York.

A man armed with a 12-gauge shotgun blew out a security camera after walking into a branch of Ontario National Bank in Phelps, 30 miles southeast of Rochester, Sheriff Phil Povero said.

Bank employees called 911 and a veteran deputy arrived just in time to see the suspect driving out of the parking lot, the sheriff said. The deputy chased the suspect for about a mile before the suspect's car drove off the road and hit a utility pole.

The man got out of the car and shot the deputy in the ankle, Povero said. The officer then returned fire and killed the man, the sheriff said.

Further details about the robbery were not immediately known.
