Security camera installation may be delayed

Security cameras may not be installed in Orange's central business district until a new police station is built.

The city's crime prevention committee will ask the council to defer buying and installing the closed circuit cameras until the new police station is developed next year.

The chairman, councillor Glenn Taylor, says the money set aside for the cameras could be used to fund several youth programs.

"There are a number of positives about waiting for the new station also, they'll be able to allocate space in the station where the monitors will be positioned so the police can watch them and activate cars and so forth to respond to crime," he said.

"Also the fact of the matter is that at this stage technology is moving ahead very quickly and the cameras will only come down in price."
