Cool interface. Thru Expose there's a nice use of function keys. Weaknesses: None found so far. Summary: It's great that an Apple GUI is built on top of UNIX. Everything is faster, slicker, more polished, and finally all of the little irritations seem sorted out. When connecting to a digital camera, you plug it in and it just works. You don't have to worry about drivers or whether you've got the right software installed - all of the apps just work. To top it off, the operating system has not crashed ever. If you've got at least a G3 Mac, I can't recommend Panther enough. You'll never want to go back to OS 9.2.2, except in Classic mode. Reviewed by: kmerson from CA on Jan 19, 2004 Rating: Experience: 3 Days Strengths: nice improvements to Finder, Mail, Safari, etc. Weaknesses: none found yet Summary: Installation/upgrade process went very smoothly. Since there are already Panther updates available, I used Software Update to get those immediately after installing from CD (but that wouldn't be practical without broadband). Expos¨¦, the new window manager, is particulalry cool. Built-in fax support is very welcome too, though long overdue. So far, all improvements work as advertised. A nice update. Reviewed by: juliesunny from WA on Aug 4, 2004 Rating: Experience: 30 Days Strengths: Runs very smoothly~ Weaknesses: None so far! Summary: Easy installation. No issues with the OS crashing. I like the hiding windows feature. I am sure that there are many features that I have yet to discover, but so far so good. Happy customer! Reviewed by: Gloabe2474 from NY on Nov 14, 2003 Rating: Experience: Strengths: NA Weaknesses: NA Summary: I just purchased and installed Mac OS X-Panther. It seems Apple is getting better in their upgrades and installation techniques. I had no problem in its installation and, if it performs as well as the Jaguar, I am confident many PC users will buy Apple products. Reviewed by: jordanh18 from GA on Mar 7, 2004 Rating: Experience: 45 Days Strengths: No problems with installation. Computer actually seems to be a bit faster (as advertised). Other applications are a bit more stable, as well. Weaknesses: Long installation duration. Summary: I had been hesitant to get the Panther OS, given some of the published problems with installation and certain unsupported applications. However, now that I have it installed, most everything seems to be running better/faster than before (under OSX 10.2.8). The installation, while a bit lengthy, proceeded without incident and my Mac (G4 400MHz) restarted with no problems. I only have a few apps that have not been supported yet (most notably AfterBurner). Great evolution of the Mac OS. Reviewed by: kmandry from CA on Feb 21, 2004 Rating: Experience: 5 Days Strengths: Fast, Better Icons, New Programs Weaknesses: Takes a lot of disk space Summary: This version is a vast improvement over previous versions. The update from Apple's Web site is a must, though. Without it, you'll experience possible disk corruption. If you haven't upgraded yet, now is the time. Reviewed by: Edwin966 from CA on Apr 10, 2004 Rating: Experience: 60 Days Strengths: Highly intuitive operating system. Solid. Weaknesses: Very little support for older Macs with USB/FW port cardbus. Summary: I loaded Panther on a 500mhz G3 Powerbook(Pismo) with 1024RAM. It was a little troublesome to load at first but runs like a dream. It is very intuitive and offerrs assistants and help at the click of a mouse. The disk utility also checks for permissions conflicts on your system. This four disc set also comes with an X-tools disk that I have yet to explore. The only draw backs were the conflict with Palm hotsyncing that has an available fix for, the dangerous encrypting archival software that I chose not to use, and the lack of support for older Macs with cardbus USB/FW ports. Reviewed by: Wayneinco from CO on Jan 16, 2004 Rating: Experience: 6 Days Strengths: Stable OS, very good additional features. ALWAYS better than WINDOWS!!! Weaknesses: Apple still charging too much for minor upgrade packages, and not giving any upgrade discounts for those who already upgraded in the past year - come on Steve Jobs, let's not be so greedy! Summary: I like the new version. So far, no issues with the OS crashing or anything, I like the ease in hiding windows that I didn't have with OS 10.2 I do think it would be nice if Apple charged less for minor upgrades versus major ones, or provide upgrade discounts for those of us who have had OS 10.2 for less than 6 months. I got a great deal for the OEM version from eagletronics.com, one of Pricegrabber's storefront retailers, and service and responsiveness was excellent -- best price doesn't mean bad service with these folks. I paid $68.95 including freight, and I didn't have to have an educational connection to get this price. Reviewed by: rjcarmel1 on Dec 8, 2003 Rating: Experience: 1 Days Strengths: NA Weaknesses: NA Summary: Installation took 1 hour but was easy. So far I haven't noticed too many differences from OS 10.1. It is annoying that Safari has not imported my bookmarks from Internet Explorer. Reviewed by: tkborseth from IA on May 9, 2004 Rating: Experience: 2 Weeks Strengths: Easy to go between applications, I like the ability to see all my open windows or to send them off screen to see the finder. Able to find what I want easily on the hard drive. Weaknesses: Most of my applications and my scanner do not work in OS X. Therefore, I had to buy new versions of the software. Also, I am not able to keep track of all the applications open. Summary: I have been looking forward to getting OS X for a long time. Now I finally got a computer that could run it. I am very happy with the software even though I have had to purchase other software to run on it. I highly recommend OS X! Reviewed by: valramirez1_1058985039 from CA on Jan 15, 2004 Rating: Experience: 1 Days Strengths: NA Weaknesses: NA Summary: I have just received my "PANTHER" order. I am pleased with the price and the delivery was sooner that you estimated and sooner than I expected. I haven't installed it yet, but my daughter bought me the "Jaguar" version and she has highly recommended to get the "PANTHER". Let's hope that this will be an improvement to my system. Val Ramirez Reviewed by: coolest from GA on Jan 11, 2004 Rating: Experience: 30 Days Strengths: NA Weaknesses: NA Summary: cool ... way cool new tools. However, for a brand new operating system just released to public, unfortunately it already requires new software upgrades from Apple in order to work properly and as advertised. What happened to software quality assurance? or was it the rush to meet the Xmas shopping season? end. Reviewed by: raqui from CA on Jan 13, 2004 Rating: Experience: 2 Weeks Strengths: Very simple to use. I love the new option to hide windows, with the F keys. With the past version I wasn't able to load all the pictures at once like I cannow. great improvement Weaknesses: The calendar doesn't include notes , like Palm does. I wish it did, so I wouldn't have to use Palm. Summary: Simple and easy to use. I love all the icons. As a Graphic Designer I have to say that is great the fact that this system doesn't crash like the past versions. I only wished I didn't have to buy all the new Graphic Design software upgrades to make sure it works good. Reviewed by: intlpvti from OH on Dec 13, 2003 Rating: Experience: 30 Days Strengths: Nice update Weaknesses: None Summary: A continuing committment by Apple to improve and expand an already great operating system. A seamless environment which ought to encourage developers to get on the band wagon. |
