Eaton Unveils Award-Winning Home Heartbeat?at CES, IBS
Home Heartbeat? winner of a Consumer Electronic Association Innovations Award, is a wireless home awareness system that provides consumers with anytime knowledge of the inner workings of their homes. The plug-and-use system enables consumers to add simple remote monitoring to ordinary household systems and devices.

Three main components make up this award-winning system:

Base Station ?The heart of the system, it communicates with the Home Key and sensors wirelessly and maintains constant awareness of the state of the home. The Base station interprets the alert and status messages from the sensors and relays the information to the Home Key.

Home Key??The Home Key communicates wirelessly with the base station. Homeowners use the Home Key抯 LCD display to monitor the home and to add additional sensors to the system. As soon as the Home Key is out of range of the Base Station, it captures a snapshot of the current state of the home. If a homeowner wonders if an iron was left on or the garage door open, one glance at the Home Key will confirm exactly the status of the house at the time the Home Key was last in range of the Base Station. If there is a change in state of one of the sensors while the homeowner is away, a 揅all Me Awareness?option sends e-mails or text messages to the homeowner抯 cell phone.

Detection Sensors ?The backbone of the Home Heartbeat system is a network of detection sensors: water sensors, open/closed sensors, power sensors, reminder and attention sensors. The sensors can alert the homeowner to a wide range of problems, including pipe leaks and flooding, opened doors and windows, and appliances that are left on. An additional feature is a water shut-off valve that can be controlled and activated by any of the sensors. Reminder and attention sensors can be set to alert homeowners about easy-to-forget tasks, such as changing batteries in smoke detectors or cleaning out the gutters.

Home Heartbeat operates on a new wireless networking standard, IEE 802.15.4 (also referred to as Zigbee). This standard connects small, embedded sensors and transmitters that don抰 need much bandwidth, but do need long battery life, built-in network security and scalability. Because the Home Heartbeat system is wireless, it is easy to upgrade by adding new sensors and components. Out of the box, Home Heartbeat can quite literally be up and monitoring the status of the home in minutes. Home Heartbeat makes it easy for homeowners, whether at home or away, at work or on vacation, to get quickly alerted when potential problems occur at home.
