While it may seem a bit strange to some to find out that Nokia is launching a security camera product, it does signal the realization that the technology used on cellular networks isn't just about mobile phones -- but can be seen as a platform for other devices and applications. While we have no idea if the cellular camera idea makes sense or will be even remotely successful for Nokia (seems unlikely), it's basically using the same technology found in many camera phones. It has a camera, a GSM radio and MMS capabilities. It detects motion and sends an MMS video to either a mobile phone or email. This is just finding a new, non-phone application for technologies that already exist. It's about viewing the technologies as a platform, and then looking for applications to build on top of it. |
