Adtran Announces Industry's First Integrated Power over Ethernet (PoE) Switch-Routers

New Functionality Brings Savings of Up to 50 Percent and Simplifies Migration to Voice over IP Applications

Huntsville, AL February 28, 2005 -- Adtran?, Inc. (NASDAQ: ADTN), a leading provider of network access equipment, today announced the industry's first all-in-one integrated Power over Ethernet (PoE) switch-routers and the addition of standards-based (802.3af) PoE functionality to its growing line of Ethernet switches. Standards-based and designed with the reliability of an Adtran-engineered powering solution, these products provide a lower-cost future-proof switching solution that eliminates the need for external power sources to accommodate applications such as VoIP and provide power to LAN-powered devices such as IP phones, wireless access points, and security cameras among others. These products establish a new price point in the PoE switch market, with list prices up to 50 percent lower than competing products.

NetVanta 1000 Series switch-routers are the industry's first all-in-one network access solution that combine a 24-port managed Ethernet switch, a full-featured IP access router (with a modular WAN interface), a stateful inspection firewall, and optional VPN and dial backup capabilities. The NetVanta? 1224R and 1224R PoE combine all of this functionality into a single 1U rackmount platform, designed for businesses of all sizes needing converged WAN/LAN, branch office, or multi-site connectivity. For high-speed server access, uplink or stacking requirements, the NetVanta 1224STR and NetVanta 1224STR PoE add integral Gigabit Ethernet ports. These multi-function devices eliminate the need for multiple network devices, conserve rack space, simplify network administration, and lower the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) with a complete solution for WAN-to-the-desktop connectivity. A full-featured integral IP router allows for cost-effective Internet access, corporate Frame Relay, or point-to-point connectivity utilizing industry-standard routing protocols such as OSPF, RIP, and BGP.

"When we entered the switch market, just under one year ago, we promised our customers a diverse product line that would help them expand their growing networks, ease the migration to new applications such as VoIP, and save money without sacrificing quality or reliability," said Tim Saunders, vice president of product management, Adtran Enterprise Networks Division. "With the launch of our PoE and Gigabit switch-routers and switches we have done just that. These solutions will help us reach a growing number of customers by making VoIP more affordable and easier to deploy, resulting in quicker Return on Investment (ROI) and lower Total Cost of Ownership."

Four new products, the NetVanta 1224R PoE and NetVanta 1224STR PoE switch-routers and NetVanta 1224 PoE and NetVanta 1224ST PoE Ethernet switches simplify network planing by providing full power for all 24 ports, up to 15.4 watts per port (the maximum power allowed). These devices use the data pair to provide data and power to networked LAN devices, and allow customers to retrofit their network for the addition of new applications without the added cost of modified wiring to support IP-based devices. NetVanta PoE products are equipped with a specialized Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) Application Layer Gateway (ALG) that ensures seamless delivery of VoIP calls across SIP-based phones, IP PBXs, and other disparate devices in the network without having to disable firewalls and compromise network security. As an added benefit, these products offer five-year North American warranties, free toll-free technical support, and free firmware updates for the life of the product.

An extension of Adtran's widely deployed NetVanta internetworking solutions, all NetVanta switches and switch-routers use the ADTRAN Operating System (OS) to provide advanced standards-based functionality for interoperability and ease of integration in multi-vendor networks. These switches are equipped with 24 Ethernet/ Fast Ethernet ports for non-blocking Layer 2 switching functionality at the network edge. A familiar Command Line Interface (CLI) ensures ease of use and eliminates the need for extensive retraining. An intuitive, web-based Graphical User Interface (GUI) provides step-by-step configuration wizards to aid in remote configuration, the ability to upload or download configurations, and the ability to upload firmware as newer versions of the ADTRAN OS become available. Other standard features include support for 802.1Q Virtual LANs (VLANs) and VLAN trunking, GVRP, LLDP, Stacking, Mac-based port security, Spanning/Rapid Spanning Tree, Link Aggregation, Quality of Service (QoS), SIP ALG, a stateful inspection firewall, and optional VPN functionality.

These NetVanta devices are currently shipping. NetVanta PoE switches are list priced at $1,795 (NetVanta 1224 PoE) and $1,895 (NetVanta 1224ST PoE), while NetVanta PoE switch-routers are priced at $2,195 (NetVanta 1224R PoE) and $2,295 (NetVanta 1224STR PoE). The Enhanced Feature Pack can be purchased for $495 (List).

For more comprehensive management of NetVanta-based networks, ADTRAN offers n-Command. This network management system simplifies large-scale changes to firmware and configuration files from a central location.

n-Command is available in two versions: NetVanta Internetworking Essentials (for networks with 15 or fewer NetVanta devices) and n-Command Enterprise Edition (for larger networks). NetVanta Internetworking Essentials is available free of charge and can be downloaded from the ADTRAN website at www.adtran.com/n-command. n-Command Enterprise Edition carries a retail price of $995 (list).
