|Summer Infant Day & Night Handheld Color Video Monitor 1.8" Screen
- It does the job! But!!
It works reasonably well but the picture is just fair. I like it because I can see what is important. It is also 900HZ which is nice that it does not cause problems with the newer wireless devices that are on 2.4HZ. In a high tech home that is a real plus....more info
- Does the job
Have realistic expectations when buying this video monitor and you'll be happy with your investment. The picture quality is good (especially in dimly lit rooms), the video camera head is very light weight and tilts in four directions (ours hangs on the wall just above the crib suspended on a thumb tack!), and the battery so far has been really good (I've forgotten to plug it in a few nights and it's still juiced up). So, realistic expectations...
1) Don't expect to see the same vivid imagery of your baby that they promote in their packaging. Most likely you'll be setting up the monitor a safe distance from your baby's head/body so you'll get a more complete picture of your baby's body- not the close-up mug shots featured in the ads. The colors will not be as vibrant either, unless your little one has an affinity for sleeping in a very brightly lit room.
2) Do expect some feedback on your receiver. There are six degrees of 'noise' (green to red) to alert you of sounds in the room. I've become accustomed to only paying attention when I see it register 4+ repeatedly and with some length (feedback registers short bursts of 4+ and is common for my house). The feedback is audible so unfortunately I have to turn the sound down very very low at night (just enough to hear a cry), or I am awakened by the hisses all night.
3) You can't control how long the video display stays on when the received is not plugged into the wall, so if you're downstairs and want to see your baby constantly you will need it to be plugged in. Otherwise it will go to sound-only after about 3 minutes.
I would prefer that it came with two video monitors, because sometimes baby falls asleep in another 'regular' nap spot that you'd like to watch. Also it would be great if it were possible to move the video head remotely (so that when baby squirms out of view you can find her) but I don't expect to see that on a household product such as this. Overall I've been really happy with this tool, aside from the feedback annoyances, which channel switching doesn't seem to fix. (We do have a wireless router and cordless phones throughout the house)...more info
I love this monitor! The picture is so good that I can even see my twins breathing on the monitor while they are sleeping. Sometimes I get a bit of static, but I just move the monitor a couple of inches and the problem is corrected. I have had this product for ten months and just yesterday the picture stopped working. I can still hear sound, but the picture is gone. I just called Summer and they are going to send me a replacement. Great customer service to back this product!...more info
- Almost perfect
It would be perfect if the camera could also be used unplugged, just like the monitor, with a battery. ...more info
- Great baby gift...
Purchased this as a gift and received only praises on its clarity and ease of use. Definitely recommend it over the hand-held audio only devices. Saves you from getting up for each and every little noise to check up on the baby....more info
- Great for checking on baby without entering the room and as a nightlight for those late-night feedings!
We love this monitor! You could live with a simple sound monitor, but my husband and I love gadgets so we both agreed to get this despite the cost. Our daughter is now 3 months. It has the obvious benefits of being able to see her when sleeping and to check in on her when we hear noises but don't want to go into the room if it is not necessary. An added bonus is to use the monitor as a nightlight/flashlight when I go to her room for those late night feedings. We recently moved and this has proved to be invaluable to help me navigate around boxes in the hall! Battery life is great. I plug it in at night and use it all day around the house. The one down side is that I cannot talk on our wireless house phone in our daughters room without turning off the base because the frequencies interfere with each other.
I have also found the video monitor to be valuable when babysitting older children who can get out of their crib/bed. It lets me watch them and know when I need to go into the room to put them back in bed :) When we no longer need it for our children, I will probably use it to watch the dog at night! ...more info
- Love it
I love this monitor. This is the only one we have owned with our first baby. It works great. I usually leave it plugged in and only used it at night. However, it works well as a hand held also.
The screen stays lit if you have it plugged in. If unplugged it dims to save battery power. You can also shut the screen off manually either way.
I love being able to see the baby. She is only 6 months old. But I have seen her stare towards the camera mutliple times. I think it is so cute to see her in the morning "looking" at me.
As far as picking up other signals. Yes this can happen. However, my husband says that if you have the camera and monitor on at the same time it blocks the other signals. So the only time you would be broadcasting your crib is when the handheld is off so your baby probably isn't in there anyways. ...more info
- Wonderful product!
I'm the Grandma of a 2 year old and 1 month old. Our daughter in law bought this two years ago and it is the best devise yet! They lived with us for a year while their house was being built and we just loved watching the baby while she slept or played in her crib. The picture is very clear. Fast forward two years and another baby. The first unit still works great! They bought another unit to use in another room. It doesn't work as well with both on but just turn one off while you look if you want a clearer picture. Grandma and Grandpa couldn't live without it so we now have one in our house when they come to visit. We also purchased another unit as a baby shower gift for a friend. They don't think they will need it but I said just wait until the baby is born and you won't be able to live without it! ...more info
- One of my MUST HAVE baby items
I love this camera. I have not had any problems with it due to interference from phones or internet. The range is good --I can go outside or downstairs and it still works. At night, the image is a bit dark-but still good enough to see whether or not the baby is sleeping or not.
I don't have any complaints, and this product made the transition of my daughter into her own room much easier on me!
Also, I was able to get this at a great price on Amazon. The price fluctuated quite a bit, so by checking frequently I got a great deal!!...more info
- Great baby monitor
This is a great video monitor, a mush have. Great sound and video. Gives you peace of mind to move about while baby sleeps. Easy to use....more info
- HORRIBLE PRODUCT!! FIRE HAZARD??
Summer Infant Day & Night Handheld Color Video Monitor with 1.8" Screen - Silver
We have had nothing but problems with this monitor! We purchased it 14 months ago and are no unable to use it at all.
We get tons of interference, sometimes we pick up our neighbors phone conversations, and we are in houses with a fair amount of space between properties
The rechargeable battery stopped recharging after 7 months, so it is no longer portable.
The audio has become intermittent about 6 months ago fading in and out all night long.
Last week I awoke to the entire face plate of the monitor melted and the plastic housing pulling away from itself. It was on my nightstand where it always is, but for some reason it overheated. I contacted Summer since it is 2 months past warranty they offered me a replacement monitor for $100.00 I laughed hysterically
What a waste of money!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!...more info
- Lasts less than a YEAR...
This initially was a great product and I loved it for many months. After 6 months the screen on the unit began to malfunction and there was no image coming thru. I replaced the handheld. In less than a year the screen did the same thing plus the screen stopped working altogether. I have two friends who also have the monitor and they have also had problems with the screen. The company will only replace it within a year of purchase. (why only within a year...becasue it will stop working after a while).
I find there are so many other models out there and hopefully one that will last thru more than a baby's first year.
I Do not recommend it at all. ...more info
- Best buy!
It's an awesome product. I don't have any problems with it. The screen shows clear picture, even when the room is complete dark. I'm impressed. ...more info
- Good Product
This is a great product in that you are able be mobile and have video. The color video is a little weak, but overall a good product....more info
- Finally - a static-free video monitor!
We just had a new baby and bought this to replace our Sony MobiCam that we've been using with our toddler. I couldn't bring myself to buy another MobiCam camera since the picture on the first one is so bad. It is definitely our house, as the MobiCam works elsewhere (sometimes) but at home the picture has a lot of interference and the sound is useless. We decided to spring for the Summer monitor and cross our fingers that it would work... and it DOES! The picture is totally clear with no lines, static, or fuzz. The sound even works too... I was surprised to hear every gurgle and sniffle of the new baby when he was upstairs snoozing and I was downstairs. Wow. One note, we can't have the MobiCam on at the same time... the 2 devices interfere with one another... so we just ordered a second camera for our toddler's room and then it's goodbye MobiCam....more info
- One of the best things I've gotten for the baby
We have a baby who's a very light sleeper and who also seems to make noises and whimper sometimes in the night. Even when she's sound asleep in the deep sleep part of her sleep cycle, just opening the door to her bedroom will frequently startle her awake. This monitor has been a lifesaver -- I can check everything (except whether she needs a diaper change!) by just peeking at the monitor. I can see if she's kicked off her blanket, making sleep noises or telling us she's really awake now, and lately, I can see if she's standing up in her crib. The camera portion is very easy to adjust to point to another area and I've also frequently used it to keep an eye on her while she's playing in a playyard or on the floor while I do a quick chore like washing the dishes or putting laundry in the washer. I really love being able to just peek at the monitor and see her sleeping, too -- it took a long time before we ever got to really watch her sleep peacefully!
- obviously, a picture - worth a thousand audio-only monitors which we've also used
- very clear picture and good range for picking up the signal - I can go to our neighbor's house and use it (she uses the same monitor, though, so we have to make sure we're on different channels - we had a really good laugh awhile back - they were having a cookout and I brought the baby home to put her to bed, then went back to the party, monitor in hand - I looked at the picture when I got there and it didn't show my baby's crib. Instead it showed another baby in a playyard. I realized it was her baby and so she switched the channel on hers and I was back to watching my own baby while enjoying the rest of the evening.
- when the video part is on a lot, the battery does wear down rather quickly - or maybe I just keep looking at it too much!
- it's a little big - doesn't fit easily in my jacket pocket if I'm outside, though it does clip to my jean's pocket/waistband decently if a little loosely
- the lights indicating the noise level are really bright and also seem to be very sensitive so there's a lot of flickering and flashing - I hve to keep it upside down (lights down) on the nightstand during the night
Overall, the cons are really measly. It's a great way to keep an eye on the baby without worrying that I'll wake her up by checking on her. Haha, maybe I'll still be using it when she's 16....more info
- Love it!!
We bought one for our daughter in 2006 when she was born and still use it. It was recommended to us by friends as their favorite baby product and we totally agree. We just bought one as a gift for our new nephew. Can't say enough about it! I don't know how people do it with just sound alone and no video. Light, convenient, easy to use, never had any problems with it....more info
- Nice monitor, VERY POOR battery life
Its a great monitor and we have thoroughly enjoyed having it - until the video shut down and finally the whole unit stopped working. The battery pack in it went kapfloie and our daughter is only 5 weeks old! The monitor cannot be used while hooked up to AC - it works while on battery mode only. It must be charged regularly, and after a short time the batteries could no longer hold a charge. If you open the back of the monitor to check the battery pack it clearly states, "Use only original battery pack. Warranty void if other batteries are used." A replacement battery pack is $30-$35, but I don't want to have to buy a replacement every 2 months for a warranty-less monitor!?! That would be the price of a whole new monitor over the course of a year! Grumble. ...more info
- Great picture in the dark
I am very happy with this product. I live in apartments and have had no noise issues whatsoever....more info
- Poor quality product
As others have noted in their reviews, there are only 2 channels on this monitor, so if you live in an apartment building, there's a fair chance that a stranger with the same monitor may be watching your broadcast.
Static and interference from the unit is horrible. No matter what the distance from the camera, the unit emits a terrible wailing noise that sounds positively unearthly. I tried unpluging my wireless router and other electronic devices, but to no avail--I suppose interference from electronics that my neighbors are using (I live in an apartment) are likely causing the problem, so there's no way around it.
Even if the sound and security weren't enough of a problem, the picture quality is. Even in the brightest light, the 'color' images look pale and washed out. In low light, contrast is so heavily exagerated that the image is barely usable.
Glad I got this as a gift--I can send it off to the recycling bin without attempting to get a refund....more info
- GREAT monitor
I love this monitor. It is very clear (we keep it about 4 - 5 feet away from her crib). The nighttime picture is great too. It's even better than the old school night-vision type of cameras where the eyes look like white lights. We can walk downstairs and outside with the rechargable handheld unit and still get great reception (and we're a wireless house). It's such a relief to just have a look at what's going on in the crib rather than listening and wondering. We have fun just watching her when she wakes up to see how she plays by herself too. I can't recommend this more highly, especially to new parents who don't know what they're in for!...more info
- SO glad we went with a video monitor!!!
I am so glad that we decided to get the video monitor! This is convenient to use, and it is wonderful to be able to turn on the monitor when my son makes a noise and see if he is awake or just rolling around. The picture quality is surprisingly good in both light and dark, and the sound quality is good when there is no static. Static is a problem sometimes, but instead of carrying the device around with me, I have located a couple of static-free areas of my home and set it up there, and it works like a charm. The battery life is not particularly good, but the device does plug in as well, and so it hasn't been much of an issue. Overall, very pleased with the purchase. This item retails for $179, so if you find it cheaper (like here), it's worth the money!...more info
- a lot of feed back
I love the idea of being able to see my baby and it ha kept me from running into her room on several occasions because I can see that she is sleeping, but I am now looking for a different brand because this one has so much feed back I have a hard time falling asleep and it wakes me up in the middle of the night....more info
- Great Monitor
This is a nice monitor. It is really nice being able to see your little one instead of relying strictly on noise. Being able to see will prevent you from going into baby's room when not necessary. I also like the idea of adding another camera to monitor a second room which I plan to do for my 4 year old. The time out feature is really nice too and a must have for the night time monitoring. Easy to use, easy to set up and works great. The only negative I have so far is the picture is not the best but the baby's room is dark, even in the day. Even with that, the picture is enough to see when he is awake and needs me. ...more info
- One thing we could never live without
We can not imagine raising our children without this monitor. Although it is kind of pricey, it is worth every penny. We owned it for 2 years and a half and works perfectly. The image is clear and we can take it with us everywhere we go. It's a great peace of mind looking at your kids and knowing that everything is fine.
- Video baby monitor
This monitor is great! A friend of mine has one and my husband and I loved it. When the opportunity arose for us to buy this, we took advantage of it! The hardest thing about setting it up for us was where to put the camera for the best view of the crib. Our nursery is small and wider than it is deep with low ceilings, so it took some work, but we got it to work beautifully for us. The color setting during the day is really cool and being able to see him at night is just what we needed...I would recommend this monitor to anybody that can afford it or has some Amazon.com gift cards (like we did). It is worth the cost!...more info
- Peace of mind and well worth the cost
We purchased this monitor shortly before our second child was born. It has been wonderful. The handheld monitor is so much more convient than the monitor we had with our first child. (Small 5" tv type monitor) The sound quality is excellent.
The most important thing for me is being able to see if he is really awake at night or if he's just moving around and making noise. Being able to see when his eyes are open is wonderful. (our little one is a noisey sleeper.
He is 15 months old and we've had no trouble at all with this monitor.
I would, and have recommended it to many. My sister has twins and purchased two cameras with just one monitor. She can switch from "A" to "B" to determine who is awake or fussy. My neighbor purchased the same monitor after seeing our's for just a few minutes. Another friend whose baby is due next month has also purchased one.
It is a color monitor, but B/W in the dark. The monitor requires light to show color. I prefer to keep my little one's room dim so black and white works. However, if the curtains are opened (and its sunny outside) you can definitely see the color. Soft pastels, nothing bright, glary or harsh.
Believe me, the last thing you want to do is go into a sleeping baby's room.... thinking he is awake only to realize he wasn't... but now that you've entered and made noise...he is awake. This monitor will keep you from making that mistake.
I also enjoy watching my little one at naptime. He likes to play for 15-30 minutes before going to sleep. I can turn on the monitor and watch him play with his taggie, or with his bunny or sing songs. It is truly wonderful to be able to watch.
