Customer Reviews:

  • No useless bells and whistles.
This product delivers as advertised. It's a compact, $200 video camera. If you expect the video and sound quality of a traditional video camera, you will be disappointed. I also own a mini-dv which I rarely use. I find myself carrying the Flip MinoHD and using it more often than my still camera. The video quality is great when viewing on my computer (24"), but not so great on my TV....more info
  • Great Camera, When It Works ...
This camera is lots of fun. Takes reasonably good footage for its size. Intuitive interface and pre-loaded software. Works right out of the box (battery is charged and everything). Feels kinda like taking an Ipod out of the box.

Problem is, from the start, it worked about 8 out of 10 times I turned it on. That is not acceptable for a product that is designed to capture precious moments. Moments don't wait for you to hold the on to the button for 10 seconds, then wait for a reboot. (Missed a once in lifetime shot of my three year old this morning.)

I received this as a Christmas present (December 2008). It's April 11, and it now does not even turn on. Worse, it has video on it that I can't download to my computer. So three months, and now it's a paperweight.

My advice is to find a different camera.

    April 29, 2009 update:

Customer service is atrocious. Only e-mail is available. And they keep asking me to give them "more detail" about it "not turning on." It won't turn on. How do you give more detail? I hit the "on" button and it doesn't turn on.

When it did work, it froze up 20% of the time, meaning I had to stop and hold down the on button for 10 seconds. Half the time it would reboot, the other half of the time it would freeze up again.

Other times, when you hit record it would delay 5 seconds before recording starts (but your left standing there wondering if its frozen or just delayed). Again, that's a big problem for a video camera. You're sitting there with the camera on, then a moment comes you hit record, and the moment is half way gone before the recording starts.

Don't buy this camera. You were warned.

  • decent if you can live with 60 minutes and have a steady hand
    pros:
    decent color reproduction
    H264 youtube-ready format
    decent low light performance
    good detail
microphone pics up intended audio in most cases
battery life. you'll probably run out of space before battery life

    cons:
    mono sound
    non expandable memory
usb connector feels cheap/fragile. i would have preferred a mini usb jack
cmos rolling shutter: creates the wobble effect for shaky camera or fast subjects

  • Love It
I am someone who likes having video and pictures of trips and events, but really could not justify the costs of some cameras for my needs and really did not want to have to be carrying alot of things (size and weight).

The Flip was exactly what I needed and wanted. It is very small so you can have it with you at all times, and easily fits into handbags or pockets so you always have it with you. I have taken it on a couple of vacations and really appreciated its size for air travel.

The video and sound is fine and more than I actually expected in terms of quality for something this small at this price.

    Very good....more info
  • Wonderful new Flip MinoHD
Absolutely love this video recorder. Carry it in your pocket when you wouldnt carry a large video camers. The pictures are so clear and you can save them frame by frame with little effort to reprint as pictures. If you are taking pictures of a baby you will get the perfect picture by choosing the perfect frame. Have it available for "unusual events" any time in the flip of a switch. The easy of charging and downloading to a computer can not be beat. I bought a second one for my 14 year old grandson...more info
  • Good, pretty limited...
The HD Flip is pretty cool if all you want is an easy point-and-shoot Video camera with minimal options. Very limited zoom, virtually no customizable options on the camera. The image quality is great for the price but the tiny, directional mic built into the camera gets kinda crummy audio. The software that comes with the Flip is also painfully limited in its use. You can edit a 'movie' but all that means is combine videos and add a black title screen with white Ariel text (no chance of changing the font size either) If all you're looking to do is upload quickie videos to You Tube or Myspace, this camera will do this. Beyond that don't expect much....more info
  • Keeps breaking...
I am on my second mino. They keep not turning on. Supposedly there is a lot of problems with the batteries. You can Google it to read about it more. The tech support is really unhelpful and disorganized. Be warned....more info
  • Perfect for the value and for what I wanted
I bought this camera for a foundation that I work for. We needed a small camera we could use as a 'behind-the-scenes' camera, secondary to our main camera at events. Anyways, the MinoHD is exactly what we needed as it's small enough to fit in our pockets and still takes amazing video, indoor or outdoor. Complement that with the fact that it's extremely simple and straight-forward, and even the most technologically uneducated still want to use it. Also, the MinoHD is so small that most don't even realize it's a video camera so it just adds to their comfort while they're being recorded. The only feature I feel is lacking is the fact to pause a clip (because right now everytime you start and stop it creates a new video file), much like we used to do with tape, but then again, that would probably just make it harder to use.

    Pros:
-Small and pocketable (fits easily in my skinny jeans)
    -Easy to use
    -Very good looking
    -Simple controls
    -HD Quality (1280x720p)
    -Not very grainy indoors
-Great software, helps with resizing, as well as uploading to various websites (AOL, Youtube, etc.)
    -Fun to mess around with
    -Nice carrying case
    -Very fast startup
-Great screen even though its so small
-Even though it's so small, it barely picks up any camera shake

    Cons:
    -Wish I could pause clips
-The obvious, if only the screen were bigger but you can't complain because of how small everything is
-The mic has a tendency to pick up wind, so maybe they could include an external mic slot, or just have it be a little focused

Overall I'm extremely happy with the purchase, both for the price and the quality of the MinoHD

For anyone who needs something small and portable and easy to use, there's nothing better for me to recommend!...more info
  • Good Picture, Bad Battery
The Picture and Sound quality are good but the battery only lasts about 5 minutes so what good is 60 minutes of space....more info
  • Buy a Vado HD! Not the Mino
In short, i purchased both this and the Vado HD. The Vado blows the Mino HD away in both picture and functionality. There is no comparison. I use the Vado every day now and the extra space as well as perfect picture (you can also change picture format unlike the Mino) is the best compared to all pocket HD camcorders.

I sent the Mino back.....pick the Vado!...more info
  • Handy little camcorder!
I like that you can carry it with you and it doesn't take much room. So if you want to take a camera also, this is no bother. Takes very clear clips and is easy to use. I'm taking it with us on vacation too....more info

  • Ideal for Video Blogging
I used this camera for a daily video blog on my first tour as a singer-songwriter (hiramring.com) - you can check out the footage of the 68-day trip on my YouTube site: http://www.youtube.com/ringrecords

I find I can record about 50 min of video (all that the camera will hold), then dump it off onto the computer and record another 45 minutes before the battery dies. It takes about an hour to fully recharge, and the only way to recharge it (or get video off) is to connect via USB to the computer.

The light sensors are really good, so even in low-light situations it gets a very natural picture (the tripod is useful to keep it in one place so the sensors don't have to do too much adjusting), and I find the sound quality to be decent as well. You can check out my latest YouTube video of my friend Matt playing jazz in a local club to see what I mean.

It also comes with handy video-editing software that loads from the camera (which is why it only fits 50 min of video rather than 60) and allows you to select the length of the clip you want. If you want to create several clips from the same piece of footage, you have to copy and paste the clip and select different spots within the original before creating a movie with the selected clips. So that part is pretty limited, but you can always drag the clips into another editor if you want.

As far as I can tell, though these are the only drawbacks: needs a USB computer port for both getting the footage off and re-charging, and doesn't take pictures at all (you can take a screenshot from the video using the editing software, but the quality is not great). It's been a great little gadget for me, though! =)...more info

  • Great device for the money
Good quality video considering the the package, seamless integration with the Mac, fun and easy to use. I've been using it for about a month now and have no complaints. The video quality is acceptable, and that coupled with the small size ensures you'll take it lots of places that you just wouldn't bother with a full sized camera. I'd highly recommend this product....more info
  • Fun toy.
Love this little camera. Can't beat its portability. Video quality is better than I expected and the software is great. Wish the battery was removable. Not very green of the maker and made me feel a little guilty buying it....more info
  • Flip Proprietary software
Beware of the Flip Proprietary software. I am not able to separate the Flip files into separate .AVI files that anyone can use and view. In other words, I am unable to edit the video unless I use their stuff. I consider myself a little beyond the average computer savvy person but this.........drives me crazy!...more info
  • Flip minoHD
This thing is the bomb! The video quality is fantastic, takes up the whole screen on a 15 inch Macbook Pro. The software that is included is good, and it works great with iLife as well.
The only problem is that sometimes it is hard to stabilize the camera so the video doesn't shake, or maybe I need to cut back on the caffeine....more info
  • Failed after 2 months
I received the MinoHD for Valentine's Day, 2009. By mid-April, the USB charger failed to work. We tried the recommended re-set, but the camera was still dead. We managed to reach someone in customer service, and were given a RMA number. It is now May 13, and we have yet to receive any word from the manufacturer. We did call last week, and were told that they "received it", and that it was "probably" being looked at. The company provides no communication as to the progress of the repair/replacement. We will call again this week. Very frustrating, and not worth the hassle. It was a good recorder while it lasted, but beware...if there is a problem, there is only a 90 day waranty. If a problem occurs during the 90 days, you can return it for repair, but don't expect to hear anything from the company, once they have it in their care.

*5-19-09 Finally heard from the repair center. They said that a new one is scheduled to ship to me, but they are out of stock right now. No idea as to when they will be able to send one to me....more info
  • great new gadget
a fantastic "at-hand" video recorder. Makes shooting, editing and storage really simple. Easily imports to iphoto, imovie and its own software is quite useful also for non MAC users. Quality is excellent, though without a zoom function, physical movement in and out does destabilise the shots. For people with young kids, this product is a must to capture those everyday moments....more info
  • A little bit buggy
I will echo what most of the other positive reviews say:

    - Pros: always have it with me, great video quality for computer display/pretty good for burning to standard DVD and TV display.
    - Cons: small size makes it difficult to hold steadily so the video is often jerky. Small screen makes it tough to monitor. I shoot my daughter's swim events and sometimes lose track of which tiny dot in the water is her, although it's quite clear when the movie plays back on the computer.

Also, the field of view is not always as large as I'd like it. If you are shooting people a few feet away from you, rather than across a swimming pool, you may find yourself backing up a lot. Originally I considered the Creative VadoHD also, which has a wider-angle lens, but I tend to like to be closer rather than farther from my subject. So I was surprised to find myself backing up with the MinoHD. From waist up is fine, but if you frequently want to get more than that, this will be too close.

The only thing I have to add that others might not have is that the MinoHD seems to have some electrical bugs. I have had it since March and had to hard reset it at least once. (Hard reset by sticking a paper clip into the tiny hole in the tripod recess.) The battery drained and it would not recharge or turn on. Sometimes the battery will not recharge when I have it plugged into a USB port, but if I run it down a little further by shooting more video, that seems to take care of it.

In light of that, beware also the short 90 day warranty from Mino. I contacted their customer service before ordering and confirmed that they will still accept the unit for servicing after 90 days, and they "will try to fix it". I am not sure what that comment was supposed to mean -- out of warranty I expect to pay for repairs, but I also expect them to know how to fix it. The warranty was almost a dealkiller except that I was able to get the item for "free" with my credit card miles. Knowing what I know now about reliability, if I had to pay with real money I would probably go with the Creative -- or the 2nd gen Mino....more info
  • Love it
I always carry my Mino whenever I go out, especially on special occasions with my son. I love the option of freezing a frame and converting it into a picture to share with family and friends. We are also buying customized Mino's with pictures for our family as gifts!...more info
  • Doesn't perform as advertised
Advertised as providing ability to "edit" videos. The only editing it provides is the ability to add a title, credits and music to videos. But the kicker is, even that doesn't work. Their technical support group was unable to provide a solution....more info
  • Well worth its price
I previously owned a Flip Ultra and decided to upgrade to Mino HD. The video quality is superb for such a small device. I also loved that it can charge itself when plugged to the computer. No more batteries expense! Also, very light and somewhat smaller than Flip Ultra. Very satisfied....more info

  • Great camera - wonderful picture quality.
This is a wonderful little device. I own a Canon HD camcorder which I haven't turned on in months because it was too bulky to carry around for day-to-day stuff. This thing fits in the diaper bag, in my pocket, and I take it everywhere. Very handy!

My ONLY gripes are that the screen is small (but if the trade-off is battery life or cost, I'll keep the small screen) and you do have to hold the camera very steady to take pictures. I would like a snapshot button the way some camcorders have them, rather than having to clip pictures out of movies.

  • I really like my Flip Video MinoHD
I read all the reviews and I agree with most so I won't duplicate. The thing I like about the product is that it is simple, easy-to-use, and gives me a great picture. The only thing that would be nice is if it had image stabilization and better zoom capabilities. But for the price and as a video camera replacement I'm happy. I took my Flip Video MinoHD skiing last week and the product did not disappoint. The videos turned out great and I was able to transfer quickly and be able to view the videos in seconds. I was able to keep the camera in my pocket and whip it out quickly and start videoing quickly on the slopes. So far I'm quite pleased....more info
