Intel Core 2 Duo Processor
Experience faster, more nimble application performance and improved energy efficiency with this 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor. Its hafnium-infused circuitry--which reduces electrical current leakage in transistors--helps to reduce power consumption while delivering. powerful processing speeds. This 2.66 GHz Core 2 Duo processor is aided by a 1066 front-side bus speed and a super-sized 6 MB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)

The Intel Core 2 Duo's 128-bit SSE3 vector engine handles 128-bit computations in a single clock cycle, accelerating data manipulation by simultaneously applying a single instruction to multiple data. And its two execution cores are designed to share resources and conserve power, helping it to achieve higher levels of performance since it uses fewer watts.

Hard Drive and Memory
The 320 GB Serial-ATA (SATA) hard drive (7200 RPM) quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data--akin to FireWire and USB 2.0. The 2 GB of DDR3 RAM (two SO-DIMMs of 1 GB) have an industry leading 1066 MHz speed, and the RAM capacity can be increased to 8 GB.

Graphics and Video
The 20-inch widescreen TFT active-matrix LCD offers a resolution of 1680 by 1050 pixels. It has a brightness rating of 290 cd/m2 (candela per square meter), a contrast ratio of 800:1, and a viewing angle of 160 degrees (both horizontal and vertical). The NVIDIA GeForce 9400M shares 256 MB of DDR3 SDRAM with main memory. You'll notice the difference when you work with high-resolution photos and high-definition video, where graphics-intensive features in iPhoto and iMovie are smoother. And 3D game play--from Spore to Call of Duty--is faster and more responsive.

This iMac also enables you to connect a second display in either extended desktop mode or video mirroring mode. The Mini DisplayPort port offers support for DVI, dual-link DVI, and VGA video connections via an optional adapter.

Wired and Wireless Connectivity
The iMac gives you plenty of room to grow, accommodating as many as six peripherals at a time thanks to its four USB 2.0 ports and the two USB 2.0 ports on the Apple Keyboard. It also includes a single powered FireWire 800 port (one of the fastest peripheral standards available)--enabling you to quickly transfer content from compatible digital video cameras, hard drives, and other high-speed devices.

Share files around your house with built-in 10/100/1000BASE-T Ethernet as well as the next-generation high-speed wireless 802.11n technology, which is integrated into the latest Apple Airport Extreme Base Station. The iMac is also Wi-Fi Certified to work with base stations and routers that use industry-standard 802.11a, 802.11b, or 802.11g wireless technologies.

You get a full complement of ports on the back of the iMac, including four USB 2.0 and one Firewire 800.
The integrated Bluetooth wireless connectivity--version 2.1 + Enhanced Data Rate (EDR)--allows you to use a wireless keyboard or mouse, and synchronize peripherals such as cell phones and PDAs. Enjoy high-quality sound on almost any speaker system with double-duty analog/digital audio. Record digital and analog sources through audio line in, perfect for your latest podcast in GarageBand.

The Greenest iMac Yet
The energy-efficient hardware components in the iMac work hand in hand with Mac OS X to create a system that can dynamically adjust power consumption to reduce the energy used overall. The iMac uses an advanced power management system leveraged from the technology that makes the most of battery life in Apple's MacBook family. To reduce energy consumption, the iMac hard drive spins down automatically when inactive, and it also decides which processor--CPU or GPU--is best suited to perform a task efficiently. That means when iMac is idle, it's using as little power as possible.

Apple engineers have worked hard to eliminate many of the toxins that are a common part of desktop computer manufacturing, such as choosing arsenic-free display glass for iMac. They have also removed brominated flame retardants (BFRs) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) from circuit boards, internal cables, connectors, insulators, adhesives, and more. And the entire iMac computer is integrated into an enclosure made from a single, solid piece of recyclable aluminum, while the display is made of recyclable glass.

The Mac mini meets the stringent low power requirements set by the EPA, giving it ENERGY STAR certification. In addition, Mac mini meets the latest efficiency requirements of ENERGY STAR Version 5.0 Specification for Computers before its July 2009 effective date. It has also earned the highest rating of EPEAT Gold. The Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool, or EPEAT, evaluates the environmental impact of a product based on how recyclable it is, how much energy it uses, and how it's designed and manufactured.

Customer Reviews:

  • GO MAC and NEVER GO BACK
Until now, I've used only PCs since the early eighties beginning with DOS and an IBM286. I was quite apprehensive about switching to Mac. After the first week, all of my concerns have vanished. Apple's video tutorials make learning simple. For new Mac users, I suggest setting aside the first few days to absorb Mac Basics 123. Thus far, there has not been an hour to pass without discovering some new and exciting feature. As far as I can tell, that joy will last for years to come. My first photo download using iPhoto was pure jubilation. Within 3 minutes, I had a superb slide show complete with my choice of music. I've used Adobe Photoshop for years. I don't believe I need it anymore. The hardest thing for me to adjust to is no backspace key, but that is a learning curve. I was worried about the small keyboard, but after one week, I would not switch back. There are thousands of positive features and too many to list here. iWORK is pure genius and brilliantly user friendly. The 24" HD screen keeps me barefooted. It knocks my socks off every time I turn it on. The speed is incredible. My initial setup incorporated the Apple Airport Extreme wireless base station and router which provides complete homegrown security. Booting up used to take 5 minutes for all the protection and security programs to run. The constant upgrades were ulcer producing. Booting up now takes about 30 seconds and most of that is waiting on the DSL modem to light up. The cooling fans on my Pent IV HP used to drown out any TV show or movie I was trying to watch. The Mac is totally silent. Not even a whisper. Instant response, too. Before buying, I spent months reading every review I could find. As a result, with my initial purchase, I ordered items like the Logitech MX1100 cordless laser mouse. I have yet to connect it because I really like the Apple Mighty Mouse. I would recommend that anyone who is switching from PC to Mac for the first time to go with the original Apple equipment first - and then upgrade later. It might save you some money. I might not even use the Logitech mouse. By lightly pressing the center roll button on the Apple Mouse, a calculator, calendar and clock instantly appear. I'm constantly using the calculator. I should have stopped already, but so many attributes keep coming to mind. The total buying experience with Amazon.Com was a pleasure. I'll close by saying with some certainty, "Once you go Mac, you'll never go back."...more info
  • Love the iMac
Never had used a Mac before. Wish I could move EVERYTHING to the iMac and toss the Windows PC....more info
  • The best purchase decision in the last 10 years
I am a loyal PC user for the past 15+ years, Toshiba for 10+ years. I am 35. Under pressure of what I had seen and heard from my Mac user friends I decided to buy my first Mac. Decided to buy iMac, not a notebook because the switching costs would be too high which would have reflected on business.

This was my best purchase decision in the past 10 years. First, because it is Mac, second because it is iMac. I will avoid listing all features and stuff. The issue is I still cannot believe this thing comes from this planet. Well, probably after having used PC for so long.

In November 2008 I met Guy Kawasaki at a conference in California, who had been inside Apple for quite a while. After I had met him, I had an impression that I am missing something out of my life, the things that are created by people like him. It turned out to be true.

If you want a completely after-PC experience, if you like watching movies, work with videos and graphics, and prefer to do that at home: must buy....more info
  • Great Machine!
This is my first Mac, and I have 3 other PC's and have been using windows for 15+ years, and every year I end up upgrading equipment and formatting my drives and re-installing windows to get all the crap out of them. With the money I spent on pc's I could have invested in more reliable mac's, It's like buying a toyota instead of a Dodge, a Dodge looks good and have cool gadgets, but a Toyota reliable and maintains it's value. Used mac's still sell for a pretty penny, there's a reason....more info
  • Makes Windows PC's Seem Out-of-Touch
I bought this computer three weeks ago. It is my first Mac after spending 22 years with DOS and then Windows PC's. I will never go back as long as Apple is still making computers. This system is everything a 'personal computer' should be. It is easy to use and understand, boots up extremely quickly, shuts down fast, zips through the web with it's cool Safari browser, and does all of the tasks a Windows system does just better. The included apps are terrific. Everything runs so easily because Apple writes the applications, the Operating System, and builds their own systems. Mail, iPhoto, and a host of other apps run superbly. I even bought Quake 4 for the system and it runs fast and smoothly.

I was so excited about this Mac that I went out an splurged on a MacBook that I am writing this review on.

    HIGHLY Recommended!!...more info
  • Best Computer I ever purchased
I can't rave enough about this product. I had a very good purchase experience through Amazon. I am new to the Apple brand and this is the second product I have owned. I currently own a Mac Mini for my small business and I like the OS and simplicity of operation. It runs my point of sale software very well and I was so happy I decided to buy an iMac for my office. Could not be happier. All in one is the best way to describe this computer. I opened the box, plugged in the computer and keyboard/mouse, and voila....finished. I needed something simple, with a large screen that could handle multiple applications at one time. This fit my needs perfectly. If you feel you need something that runs a ton of high end games, then you might need to look somewhere else. I use this computer for a media center around my business. It runs music, security cameras, book keeping, internet traffic, and more all in one small system. I would buy it again in a heart beat....more info
