Customer Reviews:

  • Get the standard edition
It's a great game, but the Special Forces Edition blows.

The special units aren't so special. The art book that I thought I was getting turns out to be a tiny cheapo instruction manual with pictures in it. At least you got a fully bound, respectable book for special editions of other games like Guild Wars, for example.

This special forces edition is kind of a waste. Save your money and get the standard game instead....more info
  • Awesome game!
This game is huge! The battles have a lot of variety and are always a lot of fun. The graphics are amazing, too. The only possible con is that the campaign is a lot more complicated than in previous Total War games; it's much bigger and deeper.
When you install it, you have to have a Steam account to tie it to. That lets you install and play it from Steam from then on, so you never need the discs again!...more info
  • The game is fun but flaws make it frustrating - SF edition not worth the extra price
First of all, I love the Total War series. I've been waiting for this game for a long time. I pre-ordered it as soon as it was available.
The game itself is fun, but the raw number of bugs make the gaming experience very frustrating. You never know when you are going to crash to desktop, or the graphics will go odd. The recent patches have addressed some of the crash issues, but not all of them.
The second pain is the Steam DRM. What a way to ruin the game.
I received my game just hours before a business trip. I was to spend two days in a hotel room with nothing to do, so I was glad to have ETW to install on my gaming notebook. Guess what? You can't install and play the game without an internet connection!! So here I am sitting in the hotel room in a remote area with no internet connection and a game I can't play. Nice going Sega/CA.
This is the final straw. I'm not buying DRM games anymore. There are plenty of other games I can spend my time with without having to worry about this DRM hassle.
The "Special Forces" edition seems to me that it is not worth the extra 50% in price. You get the "artwork" book, which is just some paper stapled together into a little "book". The map, which is another fold out piece of thin paper (not cloth or even printed on heavy-gauge paper), and the extra units I have yet to see in 60+ hours of game play.

  • Do not buy this thing
I bought this game expecting much more than it delivers. I have played all of the ones in this series. This is by far the worst. Riddled with bugs, frequent crashes and errors, one has to presume that they never really finished developing it let alone testing it. If you are willing to give it a try in the future at least wait until it goes on sale. Might be fixed by then.

The special force edition is rediculously overpriced. What do you get?
    1. a cheap black and white map
    2. a poorly written manual that does not properly explain the game. A much better explanation is available on a users forum.
    3. a rediculous art manual that is poorly designed
    4. the first part of the history channel dvd series on the revolution
    5. one copy of some of the so-called special units to use in the game if you can get it to work-a scam
    6. and by the way the period is pre-Napoleon

  • Ruining a respected series....
I have loved the Total War series since Shogun Total War so you can imagine how excited I was to hear about a new release in the series. Flash forward a year or so to March '09 and I have just received my new drink coaster. That's right folks, I am using it to keep the condensation from my Coke off of my desk. That is likely all the use that I will get out of it as my brand new Gateway laptop with the 9800m GTS and DDR3 CANNOT PLAY THE GAME due to one of (according to a quick web search) a large number of crippling bugs.

This is the worst software release that I have seen since the release of my current operating system (Vista 64). Ignore this review at your own peril.

Amazon, as soon as I am done with this soft drink, I will be repackaging Empire Total War and returning it for a full refund. Make some shelf space......more info
  • DO NOT BUY!!!
Title says it all. This is my first time buying an Empire game and I will not be buying another one. The funny part is, I never even got to play the game. I payed full price, waited for my purchase, installed, then was confounded when Steam (a program you are forced to install to even install Total War) kept giving me a "Game is unavailable at this time" error. The game is on my hard drive... yet Steam will not let me access it, at all. The game itself is probably great, but if Steam is involved you wont be allowed to enjoy it. Sega and Creative Assembly have really ruined a good thing, and will not be getting any more business from me, and hopefully not you. ...more info
  • Be careful what you buy!!!!

I love all Total War games. This is perhaps the best one yet. There is just one small problem. YOU CAN'T PLAY IT!!!!!!!!!!
In order to install the game, you need an internet connection with a Steam account. The game takes over 5 hours to install. If that wasn't long enough, every time you go to load a game, it takes almost 10 minutes!!!! Also, Steam comes up with constant updates. That means that you have to update several times a week just to play the game. If your internet is down or if the update fails, you can't play the game. THEY SHOULD HAVE TOLD YOU THAT ON THE BACK OF THE BOX!!!!!! I would have loved this game, but I can't get it to work. ...more info
