Customer Reviews:

  • Technical errors abound
I'm only halfway through the book, and it appears well-written; it's interesting enough to read and has few typographical errors. The problem is that there is an abundance of not only technical laziness, but also outright technical inaccuracies and errors throughout the text.

I am trying not to be too harsh; I am a CCNA, and probably have a deeper understanding of networking than is necessary for this test. I'm trying to branch out my skillset and credentials, and figured a low-level security certification would be a good way to start.

If the level of technical detail required for the test is adequately represented in this book, then the test should be a breeze. General security concepts seem to be covered a bit better than the underlying networking and system-specific material. That's great, as security is obviously the thrust of the book. However, this does not excuse the authors or any technical reviewers from the numerous errors and gross oversimplifications present. DO NOT rely on this book for accurate technical information. • From someone in the business
Great Book. Freshly written in a non-literary style filled with dry humor and experience. The information in the text is top notch. Some of the drawings are so simplistic, I had to keep a perspective this is the first time many readers are exposed to the concepts. Still, they are however, mundane and canned. That doesn't take points away. Just keep your sense of humor and it actually increases the enjoyment of reading the material. The authors read like good stand-ins for "NicK Burns" of Saturday Night Live, which I love. We all are inherently stupid at various points of our day and it's great fun to point at the fact without being cruel.
Contraversely, this is not a "chick" book and that fact should be considered by women and some men who prefer the writing style of female authors.
One note about the style in the material, being that the information is virtually flawless; the authors have placed bombs of joy or bombs of frustration, depending upon your mood, by using words like "Clandestinely" and referring to hackers as "Miscreants". You get the feeling that when not riding their skateboards, the authors are under a tree reading Dean Koontz.
If you miss the "keep your sense of humor" style in the writing, you're probably going to miss a few points on the Exam for being so uptight. So, loosen up and enjoy the book. It's well written.
The part I yearned for, because it is desperately needed, was a "Top Ten troubleshooting". Why is it not there? It's like dating. Most people who are eager don't do it well and those you'd love to see do it, don't. ...more info
  • Just Not Enough
Unfortunately, this book just isn't enough to pass the exam by itself. It gives you the basic knowledge and would probably have been good enough for the SY0-101 but -201 is updated and quite a bit harder. The experience requirement is not a joke with the new test and this book can't give you that. I would suggest that perhaps in combination with street smarts, you would have a better chance....more info
  • Excellent study guide, accurate sample questions
This is an excellent study guide for the Security+ exam. The sample questions on the CD are almost exactly what is on the real exam, in fact I actually found one question that was identical verbatim to what was on the CD. I think going through the chapter exams and reading on the subjects you miss questions on is the best way to study for the Security+ which is a fairly tough exam. This is the only resource I used and I got an 885/900. You will not be disappointed with this book and especially not with the CD which is worth the price by itself thanks to its excellent sample tests....more info
  • Just what you need for the exam
The Security+ exam has expanded the topics it now requires you to know and this book is written to include all of those - as evidenced by the seal of approval from the CompTIA review. This - the fourth edition of the book - study guide continues to be a solid aid to use when preparing to pass the certification exam....more info
  • The bonus material makes a big difference!
This book (the Deluxe Edition) is the same as the Study Guide with a few exceptions and those are exceptions worth noting: more study material in the form of bonus questions and appendices. One of the appendices - the lab manual - gives you hands-on exercises to walk you through the steps to not only know what the exam questions are talking about, but be able to relate them to the real world....more info

  • Excellent Book
This is an excellent book as all the others from Sybex. I haven't take the exam yet, but after finishing this book, I bet I'll pass with no problem!...more info
  • Fact and fiction

I used this book to study for the Security+ exam, and passed. But consider that I have twenty years of computer experience, not a big surprise either. Though the book covers the majority of the exam material, it has some wildly inaccurate and misleading statements that should have been caught by one of the two authors, and certainly noticed by any technical reviewer. I found the actual exam also strayed from the stated fundamentals....more info
  • Good reading material in preparation for the exam
Good reading, but the practice questions could be better. Also leaves out a few categories that I had to brush up on from other sources, but that's to be expected with just about any single book.

*******review update******* This product is outdated since the exam was updated in 2007 and this book is based on the 2005 exam...more info
  • Security+
Out of four study books I used, this one covers more than any other, but it still is not complete and sometimes up do date....more info
  • Great book, but you will need complementary materials to get certified
The book is built on a clean language, the ideas are well organized inside each chapter, but you could perceive that chapters themselves are not in the optimal order...Sometimes you have to jump from one chapter to another to cover completely an idea exposed in this book.

On the other hand, you will have to buy additional simulations and practice questions to complete your preparation, because this book does not offer you practice questions with the appropiate level of complexity compared to the real exam....more info
  • Much better books available
I started using this book to study for the CompTIA Security exam, and it seemed to cover the topics necessary to pass. However, most parts only gloss over the details, and there are some rather poor examples that complicate rather than help explain some topics. If you can memorize the book, this might help someone pass. But if you need to know the why and how of security, get a book that has hard examples and more details than this one....more info
  • Infantile testing engine - poor material coverage.
I just took this exam with this book as my primary source. In my opinion, it is a POOR choice. The content did not adequately cover the material. The questions were too easy compared to the reality of the exam. I was completely taken off guard. I will not purchase Sybex books again. I just drained $258 on the test & Sybex let me down. At the very least, it SHOULD have covered the content better.
Poor choice on my part....more info
  • Comprehensive, accurate reference - gets the job done!
I found this textbook to be comprehensive and accurate in the information it conveys. It was relatively easy to read and put forth the material in such a manner as not to bore one to death!

I passed the exam with an 803 and even saw two questions that were word-for-word out of this text. I highly recommend this textbook as the predominant reference, along with another cross-reference just for completeness....more info
  • Time Well Spent!
Excellent book for preparing for the exam. Accompanied by CD with relevant questions. If you can pass the 6 part test included, you
will..I think...pass the exam! Give yourself enough time to study
each section, then the tests and final reviews on the CD. There's
much to read so, settle in and get to it! ...more info

  • I liked the flash cards....
This book does a pretty good job of giving you definitions of terms you will find on the Securit+ exam. It also includes a good set of flash cards you can use to help prepare for this test.

CompTIA exams are very much definition based it seems and with some experience in the field this book will be both a good supplement to you knowledge for the exam and a nice quick reference guide after you've taken the Security+

I teach the Security+ classes among others and I recommend this guide to all my students....more info
