Customer Reviews:

  • Unreliable
I purchased this drive from another vendor but wanted to ensure that I get a review posted somewhere on my experience. This drive appeared to be a good deal and my use was to run virtual machines on my Mac laptop. I have returned this drive twice now due to failures. Service support via the Toshiba hard drive folks has been pretty bad. Can't find the model on the web site to automatically generate an RMA leaving one to send an email. No response to the emails, or if there has been one, it's taken a week or so. Voice mails are not returned. Only successful way to get service is to catch them on the phone. Once the drive begins to act up, it fails pretty quickly.
I would not purchase another Toshiba hard drive again due to reliability and service support....more info
  • Holds to other positive reviews
Product is up to speed relative to most of the positive reviews. Actual disk size 465 GB. This is true relative to printed size, is very convenient, plug and play works with no problems on xp and vista machines haven't tried other OS's. I have had no issues.

  • A Good Buy
This is a good buy. I received the purchase very much on time. The product is very useful to me....more info
  • sleek
for some strange reason, i was very suspicious. the 500Gb was cheaper than 400Gb. The warranty information on the site was very vague and unclear. It was not even clear if the part# was right as there were mismatches between this and those on the toshiba website.

But decided to buy it anyway as 100$ seemed a steal with free shipping. Just checked it out today. It works fine. The cable is really long..... NOT. It is the most stupidly designed cable i have seen. it is a whopping 8 in long tip to tip which makes it very inconvenient. I need to look for a longer cable. Otherwise its too early to tell about performance but it seems to be fine.

Oh and it does have a 3 yr warranty.

The product information should state that this external drive isn't compatible with a PowerBook G4. If I had known this I would never have wasted my time ordering it....more info

  • Alright.....
Delivered on time, in good condition and was as described. No problems so far............Takes a while to transfer data as it's only usb powered and 5400rpm..........It was very good for the price in comparison to the other competitors....more info
  • Great price, kinda slow :)
It is small, portable, and very nice looking. It works great, but a tad on the slow side. That doesn't bother me any because I had the time to let it transfer. I put about 100GB on it all at once and it took about an hour. So if you don't mind letting it do it's thing, I'd say this is a great buy! :)...more info
  • Toshiba hard drive
You need to know that an external hard drive comes formatted with FAT 32 and will have to be reformatted to NFTS prior to being used with a Windows operating system. This can be done with your computer. After formatting the Toshiba hard drive performs as I had hoped and I'm glad I purchased it. ...more info
  • Sometimes small is better
This is very light weight. unlike the external Seagate drive, this one does not require a separate power source. All power/data transfer is done via one standard USB connection. There is no need to tie up (2) USB ports with this model.

  • Great Portable Hard Drive
Great Portable Hard drive just make sure your computer is compatible! I have a power book G4 laptop and it would not recognize the hard drive. On the package (and description) it said compatible with MAC I thought I wouldn't have a problem. It would recognize it on my desktop G5. I had already opened the package and I didn't want to deal with the whole returning the item, I did some research and I have to use a USB hub in order to use this hard drive on my laptop. It's a bit of an inconvenience but I can still use it and it works great! I just wish they were more specific on what type of MAC you can use it on. ...more info
  • Poor Quality - drive hum/vibration.
I have a 2 year old seagate 160 GB portable drive and recently bought this 500 GB Toshiba. There is a world of difference between the two. I don't hear or feel the seagate run. Quiet and very reliable even after running all the time - for the past two years. The brand new Toshiba by contrast, has a vibration and hum to it. Essentially the drive platters are not finely balanced. This is very poor quality control on Toshiba's part and I don't expect this drive to last very long.
I used to have the best experience with Toshiba products - but in the past 2 - 3 years this is the fifth time that a Toshiba product has proved to be significantly poor in quality. The first was a laptop that kept crashing - turned out that the heatsink was not screwed down correctly on the CPU (found out when I opened it up). The second was a laptop that broke its hinges (even though it was used very gently). The CPU cooling fan on this laptop also gave up very quickly. Both turned out be known problems when doing google searches. The third was their DVD player which stopped working after a year (and about 10 hrs worth of use) - and on Amazon reviews it turned out that others too had similar issues. The fourth is my upconverting toshiba DVD/Divx player - won't read most discs after about three years of very very light use (about once a month).

I just cannot afford reliability problems with my data. Advise you to stay away from at least this product....more info
  • Light, fast, big
Can't add much to what others have said. Bought to backup and supplement my new netbook...golly what a powerful combination. I've had USB hard drives in the past that needed a double USB connection (with a cable that didn't always reach) or AC. What a pain. The Toshiba runs great on one port. No negatives to report....more info

  • You've Got Something In Store"age" For You!
Excellent product. Toshiba (name drop), in my opinion makes one of the better products on the market. I own a Toshiba (another drop) Laptop & bought this HDD because I trust not only the name, but the reliability that I always find in Toshiba (oops, must have a hole in my pocket).

This HDD from Toshiba (anyone got a needle and thread?) has fast communications and quick read/write capability.

I recommend this to anyone looking for a small, external and on-the-go HDD. Make sure you pick up a case for it as well.

  • Pretty handy and useful
I have been using this for a month now and its flawless yet. Its small enough to fit in your pocket etc. The only problem is that the USB cable is short and if you have to move your laptop even an inch, it is either dragged or hangs. This is especially disturbing if you want to use it while traveling etc because you can not keep it fixed at some place around. Overall, its a fine product and is extremely useful considering its size and its ability to run on USB power rather than requiring any external one. On another note, you will not get a full 500GB space on that. It will give you some where around 460GB. ...more info

  • 250 GB USB drive
I work in the intelligence industry and needed a way to securely transport important information in bulk. This device was a great alternative to multiple USB flash drives. Just one HDDR250E03X could hold a large volume of KMZ and RDF files, while a small 8G flash drive could hold only a few of each.

I encrypted the hard drive and password-protected it for additional security.

The only negative is upload speed. But for someone who is not uploading multiple 32 GB files, the device should prove efficient....more info
  • Drive okay but horrible cable
I bought two of these, one for my main files and one as a backup. I use these with a laptop. I have had them for several months and have had no problems with the drives themselves.

However, both cables have died. One died after just a few days of use. The second one finally died after about 6 months use. The drive has a recessed jack so it is hard to find replacement cables. I have bought or tried many cables but find that they often fall out every few minutes which is quite annoying.

I finally found some cables with a tapered end that look like they will fit into the recessed area and am hopeful this will resolve this issue. If you buy this drive I would suggest investing in some cables right away too. ...more info
  • Portable External Hard Drive a MUST HAVE item!!
This is a great product for storing information. I don't have to worry if my laptop crashes as all of my information is safe on the portable hard drive. It is surprisingly small (about the palm of your hand) and has 8x more GB than my laptop. It's great!...more info
  • Works perfectly, great value
First I bought one drive to see what it was like, having read some of the negative reviews. When it arrived, I plugged it in (Dell Optiplex running Windows XP), it was recognized immediately and installed in an instant. The backup software is OK, but I use another, so I deleted it and reformated to NTFS. Reformatting is very easy (in My Computer, select drive, right click, select format) and NTFS enables the larger files my backup system generates. I was highly pleased with this product and purchased two more. The drive is sort of cool looking, small and lightweight. My devices measured (mm), 125 x 80 x 15 and weighed 144 g each without the cable. Short cable is good for plugging into my Dell Tower and setting the drive on the top, but many users may want to buy a longer cable, as other reviewers have pointed out....more info
  • Great Product
I have to say that I really love this hard drive. I take it with my everywhere. Hook it into my X-Box 360, and my friends PS3 and it works quite well. Small and compact, fits in your pocket without being too much of an annoyance. One issue I had was that I wanted to upgrade my 360's storage space so I bought this HD to store my saved files and games but it doesn't allow you to do this. I suppose this is more of an issue with Microsoft and not a short coming of the product so I didn't factor that into my review....more info

  • good hardrive
this thing is very good, looks nice, works great so far. ive backed up my files and im storing my pro tools sessions on the hard drive.

the one thing i disliked is that it says 250 gb but when you plug it in. you only have 230 or so gb, kinda lied about that?? dont know why that space is taken up?? besides that its a good buy!...more info
  • Time Machine Backup
The Toshiba device with its success rate and price is an ideal little tool. I own a Mac and bought this hard drive as a back up for Time Machine. However, this is not a good back up program for saving extra files; it is intended for week to week back to allow your computer to return to its last saved state after a crash. So, if you're a Mac owner who wants to hold files remotely do not choose the default Time Machine option. The hard drive works fine for both Time Machine and standard, I'm just giving you warning if you're a person who like to set things up with out reading. ...more info
  • 1 Month Old and Still Running Strong
I bought the drive on March 9, 2009, after reading all of the reviews left by others. I didn't pay more than $60 or something, but I believed that given the year I bought it in, the product itself should be fixed of the bugs reported by others.

So far, I have only one complaint: Why is it FAT32 and NOT NTSC???

I waited a month (on purpose) to review the drive. I also (heeding the reviews) waited to delete the files that were copied onto the drive from the computer, just in case my drive failed.

My computer, also Toshiba, was purchased in 2003. It runs on (hopes and dreams) WinXP, and has achingly slow virtual memory. I got the drive to ease up some space on the limited 60gig HD, which has been slowing down.

So far, the drive hasn't let be down yet. It loads up fast and strong every time I plug it in. The reassuring hum lets me know it's running right, and the light keeps my hopes up that it wont break.

My advice to anyone looking to buy any of the Toshiba drives, read the reviews. See if your computer is too new for the old software, or if it could possibly just be what you're looking for.

I'll leave another review in a month on whether the drive has stopped working yet....more info
  • lovely
Stylish, passport size, and fast. Just what the doctor ordered. But I can't give it 5 stars unless it doesn't crash for at least 2-3 years. (I've used it for 6 months.)...more info
  • No warranty
I thought at the price paid that this item would be a steal. A steal it was indeed. After 4 months of usage, it began ticking and no computer would recognize it. After performing some diagnostics on it, I found that it had kicked the bucket. I went to toshiba's site to submit a warranty claim but found that none of their external HDs come with warranties. What a junk product....more info
  • It it what it says it is
So far the drive has worked perfectly for me. My only complaint is that Itunes wont let me set it as my primary drive (Not Toshiba's fault) The supplied cord is short (4 inches), but this is working with a laptop so it has not been a problem for me. It does require a USB 2.0 plug so some older computers may have problems. My work PC which is 2 years old accesses it just fine though. Design wise the product looks slick and fits nicely into my pocket when i need to take it somewhere. All aroudn I would say it has met all my expectations....more info
  • Nice Drive good price
I purchased this drive on amazon for under $100 as it seems to have gone back up in price you can take my opinions with a pinch of salt. Its a nice drive fast data transfer (was) good price point for the capacity I got, its light attractively designed and doesn't seem to get warm, it comes with a nicely engineered short USB cable. Overall I am happy with my purchase, only demerits that prevent a 5 star rating are the lack of an included case, eSATA or power port and the near impregnable plastic packaging.... ...more info
  • Great Portable Drive
I've owned several devices of this type and must say that this one is the best I've encountered. Some of the flash type drives that don't use external power are slow, but not this one. The cable is quite short and looks flimsy, so may need to be replaced some day.

It also comes with really nice backup software, the NTI Shadow, for both Mac and Windows. I have experimented with many backup programs and found shortcomings in all of the affordable ones, but this freebie is ideal for simple home backup: easy to use, and it writes actual files, not in some proprietary format that will be hard to read when restore time comes along.

Great drive, great software, great value!...more info
  • File Saver
At about the size of a deck of cards, this attractive, easy to install and easy to use hardware is a great storage device for any important documents, photos, music, etc. that you do not want to keep on your computer hard drive. Plus, it is a good back up system in case your computer crashes and you lose everything. ...more info
