- TaxCut 2008 Prem Fed State Efile
I have used TaxCut for many years and continues to please me. I was surprised that changes to the software were still continuing as late as Mid March...but maybe that's some new Federal Administration doings....more info
- Did the job with no problems
I've used Taxcut (on both Windows and now the Mac) for several years and have had no issues. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a relatively inexpensive home tax solution!...more info
- Very easy to use even for an idiot like me!
This is the second time I have bought this software program. I used it for my 2007 and now for 2008. Even thought my income went down significantly in 2008 at least it easy to do my tax returns with H & R's Tax Cut...more info
- Pleased after switch from TurboTax
I've used ChipSoft and then TurboTax for over 20 years, so it was a major decision to switch to TaxCut. When they started charging ~$10 for every printout, that was the signal. I calculate my son's taxes as well, so this would be rather expensive. One son will be doing his own taxes next year, and the other the following year, so you can guess which application they'll use.
I have a moderately complex return with W2, home business, interest/dividends, capital gains, and limited partnerships. The switch to TaxCut was much easier than I expected, and it has better coverage of partnerships. The help section took a little effort to understand, but has worked well for most cases (and Google fills in the rest). Thus, I would recommend this application, and plan to continue with it in the future....more info
- tax cut
Had one issue with TaxCut software but support team was not able to fix it and software support did not contact me. Overall good program and will use again next year, though....more info
- Tedious and Glitchy
Despite my difficulties, I was able to prepare my 2008 taxes with this software. However, I found it tedious and error-prone and will not use an H&R Block product in the future unless they make significant improvements in the 2009 version.
The software is difficult to navigate and somewhat buggy. The state forms were the worst offender: I had to make several manual corrections to the MA health insurance forms because the software kept jumbling my answers. I've been paying taxes for many years and this year, for the first time, I find myself thinking, "I hope this software doesn't get me audited."
State e-filing should be included with the cost of the software. It should also work! My return was rejected due to a "processing error" and a note that I should print and mail my return. There was no suggestion that I had done anything wrong - the e-filing just failed with no explanation.
The last straw: when I printed out my state taxes, the software assured me it would print everything that I need to file. Reading over the instructions on the coversheet it printed, it notes that I need to manually print out another form from my federal return, and attach a copy. What? It knows enough to tell me to print it, but it can't print it automatically?
Expect better from your software. This product isn't worth your time or money....more info
- Works as advertised
I had no problems at all installing the software. It checked for updates as soon as the install was complete and brought me up to the latest version right away. I was able to import data from Quicken easily and going through the interview process was simple enough. The state download went easily and imported data from the federal return with no effort on my part. I have used Taxcut in the past and I will probably use it again next year....more info
- Major Limitations
I have used Turbotax for the previous 3 years and decided to try TaxCut this year. I was really surprised by the problems I had with TaxCut - it is not comprehensive and fails in many ways.
1) There are no forms for foreign nationals that have the benefit of a tax treaty with the US.
2) I moved mid-year, so had two states. The software never asked or would allow me to e-file the second state return - it seems to think you should only e-file one state return
3) I tried to prepare a return for a friend that involved three states. I paid 30 clams to buy the extra state for his return, and the software just simply could not handle it - we went through all the steps, but it just couldn't figure out how to allocate income to 3 states and reported zeros for all taxes on the third state
4) Printing and e-filing was another disaster. You never know when people ask for a copy of your tax return (anyone try to get a mortgage recently without full documentation?). With turbotax, I could efile and still print a full tax return like I was going to paper file - that tax return looked like a real paper return and not a "summary". With Taxcut, after I efiled, it only lets me print a "summary" return - it doesn't even provide the choice to print a paper return anymore. If anyone asks me for a copy of my official 2008 tax return I am out-of-luck.
DONT DO IT. I Don't love turbo tax, but it is much superior to this product.
They also play some games with charging for E-file. The packaging (some vary) says my copy of Taxcut includes Federal + State + Efile, but that is only Federal E-file (it will allow 5 federal E-files). Even though you have paid for the state software, the state E-file is another 20 clams, which is almost the cost of the whole software package....more info
- Meets my needs
I have been using TaxCut for a number years and I think that it gets a little better each year. It is easy to follow, it works well and it meets my needs. In the 2008 version, you get 5 Federal e-Files. Who really needs more than one e-file (unless someone is doing taxes for their entire family)? I would prefer that H&R Block bring back the free state e-file without raising the price of the TaxCut too much. ...more info
- Good Product / Bad Software
I have been using TaxCut for the last several years, so wanted to use it again this year. It makes my tax preparation simple and the less then $40 it is a bargain. After getting the product and installing it, the first thing it wants to do is check for updates, due to the last minutes tax code changes. No Problem, I want the latest and greatest version and the update is free, but.... Unfortunately, for the second year in a row, I couldn't get the update to install, had to call Tech support, get a link to the newest version, uninstall the version I purchased, download and re-install. After this all was good. The part that was really disappointing was the tech support people gave me the same excuse they gave me last year and that was the version I purchased from Amazon was the first version for this year...was real old and a lot of people were having problems getting the updates to install. Not really Amazon's problem, but frustrating none the less....more info
- H & R Block TaxCut Software
I have used this software every year for probably the last 7 years. I have never had any problems and it really makes sure you don't miss anything. This year it offered a free consultation with an advisor. I submitted my question and requested a phone call response. I never heard back from them and I never was able to find out how to make another request or try to find out what was going on....more info
- Not that great
I would give this product 2.5 starts but I rounded it up to 3 since it was shipped to me so quickly. I ordered it on a Wednesday afternoon and received it the very next day! I bought this product because I thought it was cheaper than Turbotax. It really isn't. Sure, filing federal is free but for each person, you have to pay $19.95 to file for state too. They don't really say that on the box. Personally, I don't find it as easy to understand as Turbotax and I get annoyed by the constant push to purchase other services they offer. I think I'm switching back to Turbotax next year....more info
- Not much change from the year before or the year before or the year before
Better than doing it without help. This product is not much different from earlier versions. There are some new tweeks every year.
This is also a better alternative to paying several hundred dollars for someone else to prepare your taxes. If you are somewhat confident and competant, that is. If you have something complicated going on and you do not know how to do the return with out this you may need to get other help.
I did not use the e-file, so I can not say anything about that part....more info
- Solid Program - However "+ State + e-file" Deception Demeans H&R Block
I have used TaxCut for eleven years and it has always been a solid performer. I am however bothered this year by the fact that they conveniently forgot to mention that "+ state + e-file" does not mean your state e-file is included. The product stands on its own merits and value and does not need such marketing tactics. In my opinion H&R Block demeaned itself with that type of buyer-beware tactic....more info
- TaxCut Premium Edition Review
We have used TaxCut for several years now and find it easy to use. It doesn't clutter up our PC with security nonsense. So far, we have had no audits....more info
- It's almost all good
Very easy, very helpful. Much easier than flipping pages and doing the tables, etc, yourself - it does them in the background. The only issue I have is it doesn't seem to let you change a line in the form if you want to override something. I found one mistake (I think - due to money earned without a W2) and it wouldn't let me override/edit the line in the form....more info
- Wouldn't launch
The CD wouldn't launch on my computer. I made calls to Amazon and then to the manufacturer for help. One manufacturer's rep did try all kinds of strategies to load it, but the other two just gave up. (It seems the persistent one was right, and I had to reconfig. and block some anti-virus)After I blocked my anti-virus, the TaxCut reps weren't knowledgeable about activating it again (call the anti-virus people) The tax program is adequate, but I'm wary about starting up with this again next year....more info
- TaxCut 2008
After being a TurboTax customer for years, I found TaxCut to be a superior product - more robust, more features, better information and links to federal forms - all this for less money than TurboTax....more info
- Not certain until you do back-to-back comparison with other software
This is my 7th year using TaxCut for my taxes, and this year it didn't let me efile. The reason being one of the W2s has wages that are lower than social security taxes. I think this is a bug in taxcut (I don't want to spend more money on other software, type in all the numbers and go as far as efiling to find out) as it is very easy to have zero net income and some finite SS taxes (you just send all the income into 401k account. Of course your company shoud let you do it).
Other irritating feature is that it didn't let me take life time learning credit/HOPE credit even though I paid tuition for 3 courses. It is insisting that I have 1099T from the university which I didn't get. I want to do my taxes right but this software isn't giving me confidence. ...more info
- Not as good as TurboTax
Not as good as TurboTax and I didn't feel in control of what it was doing. Wasn't able to change info without starting over. Hope I don't get audited....more info
- For anyone wondering about TaxAct.com...
I've used TaxCut for many years and then switched to TurboTax last year. This year I tried a downloaded version of TaxAct. It's very similar to both TaxCut and TurboTax, but much less expensive. I didn't encounter any problems with TaxAct, from downloading to preparing my taxes to e-filing them. I'll be sticking with TaxAct next year....more info
- Seemed to work fine for me, federal, self-employment, and state returns
With a simple business and just a few depreciation items, the software seemed to handle it all just fine. Electronic filing worked nicely, no complaints....more info
- Good Product, Deceptive Sales with Hidden State eFile Costs
Product: Tax CutPremium Federal (includes State)
Amazon had best price and quick delivery. Buyers beware. HR Block has deceptively hidden the cost of the e-File for the state tax return. I searched the HR Block web site and could not find a single reference as to how you can even do a state e-file, let alone what the cost is. This is pure moral evil.
HR Block (and Turbo Tax did the same this year) are like the banks which astronomically jack up your rates if you are 3 days late on a credit card payment.
This is a way to increase the actual price paid to HR Block while decreasing the initial sale price to the customer and decreasing the total revenue to the sellers of the product like Amazon. Of course, when you get ready to e-file the state return be prepared to pay a jacked up non competitive fee to do it.
I am filing with a tax preparer this year for the first time in over 30 years and just used Taxcut to get my stuff in order. I like that HR Block will not get to gouge me on the state e-file. Tax cut does a very good job, but does have some quirks which do not you squeeze out everything you are entitled to. My tax preparer does not use HR Block....more info
- H&R Block Taxcut (Sort of)
Let the Buyer Beware! The H&R Block Tax Cut Program seems to have a mind of it's own sometimes and I don't think the program is geared toward handling all comers the way it should be. I am disabled and on SSI and my wife is retired and working part time; one of us is over 65 and one isn't and I found it hard to override what the program thought should be my responses. I had to go back three times on routine checks to correct items checked (like the allowance blocks to ID age and disability status) because the program had 'assumed' my answers and answered for me incorrectly. These incorrect responses would have costed me money and probably triggered an IRS audit....more info
- TaxCut So-So
I switched to TaxCut from Turbo Tax because of the cost. I have used TaxCut for three years. If you have a simple tax return using 1040 with itemized deductions it is fine. The interview stage is not as detailed as Turbo Tax and I found TaxCut doesn't explain the tax law as clearly as Turbo Tax. If Turbo Tax offers free State software, free fed e-file and the price is close then I will be switching back to Turbo Tax....more info
- Don't use this if you moved to a different state
I moved from PA to VA during the 2008 tax year and I used this to do my taxes. My first problem was that I had to pay an extra $30 to do both states. The program would not let me fill out one state by hand and do the other state using this software. The boxes that I would have needed to fill out were not able to be filled in. After purchasing the extra state return for Virginia, it wouldn't let me allocate 1099 Misc income between two states.
I ended up printing out both state returns and filling them out by hand. I have used TaxCut for three years and I was pretty happy with it before this experience. But if you move between states, I wouldn't bother using this version of the product....more info
- Got the Job Done
I've used H&R Block's TaxCut for years so I'm use to the quirks with the application such as excessive hand holding to complete a tax return.
This year's version didn't break any new ground which was fine with me considering their feature set is already pretty complete.
I especially like Deduction Pro (now standard with at least the Premium version) as I would otherwise significantly under claim my non-cash donations.
H&R also does a good job keeping their application current with the latest tax laws. My home state made a tax law change 3/17/09 that affected 2008 returns. TaxCut had an update ready a week later that incorporated the change.
A couple of features could be more intuitive and better implemented such as printing hard copies of a return. Unfortunately, TaxCut doesn't allow you to control your printer such as selecting duplex (two-sided) printing within the program. The option is available from the File menu selection.
It would be nice if next year's version of TaxCut had quick access options to allow: saving, backing up, printing, etc.
Overall a good product and a solid 4 stars. ...more info
