  • Excellent Product . . . instructions a bit cryptic
I now have two WD My Passport Essential 320 GB Drives. They are used for monthly back-up of several computers. The software works quite well but the operating instruction are a bit cryptic. ...more info
  • Portable external hard drive
This is one of the best purchases I've made. I've gone through so many of the small USB flash drives. I would highly recommend this product. It was also one of the easiest pieces of electronics to setup. This one can turely be called "Plug and Play". ...more info
  • A note for PowerBook G4 Owners
I have an Apple PowerBook G4 (15") and the USB port does not supply enough power to run this HD (the power light comes on but the computer doesn't recognize the drive). SOLUTION: Also purchase a Western Digital USB 2.0 Power Booster Cable (Model WDCA029RNN - $9.99). Not carried on Amazon but available through the Western Digital website directly. This cable has 2 USB connectors, the second is solely for supplying additional power. Note that the cable between the two connectors IS long enough to plug into the USB ports on either side of the computer simultaneously. There may be comparable cables on Amazon, but I can vouch that this one works for this HD/computer combo and is long enough.

The drive works fine on newer Macs with the included cable.

Beyond that, it works great. I transferred about 80gigs of data in 10 minutes....more info
  • Nice Product
This is a great little hard drive. It's quite small and attractive. It doesn't need a power supply so it's very portable. I bought it for my boyfriend and he really loves it. Nothing negative to say about it....more info
  • So far, so good.
I purchased this drive for the purpose of transporting large quantities of files for access between work sites. It's fast and so far very reliable. Other features include a simple connectivity light, and flashing data transfer light (one is the same).
Here's a technical note: if at first the drive isn't recognized by your desktop PC's front panel (wired) USB ports, try the ones in back that are part of the motherboard itself. Sometimes front panel USB ports--and some on older laptops (which can be wired as well)--lack the power to run the drive.
Good luck, this drive will most likely suit your needs....more info
  • 320 GB in My Pocket
This was an "on the whim" purchase that was quite a deal on sale. I had been looking for a physically smaller external hard drive that was larger than 100 GB for quick back ups. I am very satisfied....more info
  • Pretty good.
I bought this hard drive to store a large amount of digital media. I wanted something small, that would look good on my desk. Do yourself a favor and reformat the file system to ntfs immediately. I did not find a need to do this until I already had about 200 gigs stored on the drive. I converted the drive to save myself from another time consuming backup, this worked well, the transfer rate remains decent. Overall this is a very good product for the price. In retrospect, I may have bought a larger model 1tb drive because I underestimated the amount of storage that I needed. For now I will be more selective about which files I will keep in my library....more info
  • Excellent performance
The shape and style are great, very easy to handle and storage almost anywhere, but the best is the elegant design with an excellent size, you can just put in your jacket's pocket to travel with it like a little PDA. I think the color is very elegant and easy to clean just with a little tissue, without the problem of leaving marks like the old versions.

In the matter of performance, it's ok, the little USB light show's you when the hard drive is working, and also when you can detach it from the computer in the safe mode (so that is very useful, cause sometimes after you detach de driver in the computer, the hard drive still working for a few seconds or maybe more time, so that's very annoying in the older versions of this product line).

The speed is the same, I mean its good, but the capacity I think it's not enough for these days, unfortunately this is the larger capacity (500G) in this product line, so I'm little disappointed in that fact, But besides that everything its perfect.

  • Great value for this amount of portable storage
Hard to believe there could be so much storage in something only slightly larger than a deck of cards (and not even as thick) but it's true. The transfer rate could be faster but for $79 I am not going to complain too much!...more info
  • Horrible...second one dead!
We had two of these, and now they are both dead. It didn't take long...a few months, then the clicking started (sounded like aliens), and soon after both died in the same way. I think I'll bury them outside under a tree I'm planting, so hopefully they will break down within 100 years and my data can fuel some green. I'm glad I didn't trust my sole backup to them...use other external hard drives at home. Needless to say, WD will not get another dollar from me!...more info
  • Very useful tool
I have been traveling since I installed my Passport Drive. I find it very useful as I can carry all my working files along with me and add more items to it as they are produced. It's working as it was intended to do. I would have preferred mat rather than shiny finish....more info
  • WD external hard drive
The w D harddrive has worked perfect i use it for music and have no problem. it is quite and does not get hot. I would recomend it to my friends. you can't beat the price Billy Newman Texas...more info
  • Run away from it!!!!!
Ok, so, I bought this sucker 2 years ago. Today, it started making some clicking sounds (google it and see for yourself). The problem is not with the data - it's physically damaged (and I did not drop/hit/smash it!!!).
To retrieve my data will cost me between 600 and 900 dollars - a preliminary quote....... And I NEED that data, mind you.
Conclusion? Better buy a solid state drive, pay waaaay more, but be safe and sleep tight at night. Ordering one for ~500 dollars right after posting this review.
Don't be fooled by cheap "storage". This is one of those rare cases when paying more makes sense....more info
  • _
Works exactly like it should. Tons of space for the price. Also, the drive is compact and does not require a power supply. This makes it more convenient to use than a tradition external hard drive....more info

  • Buyer Beware: Poorly Constructed, Far Too Fragile
I can't warn users enough about the fragility of this HD. I had to find out the hard way that these HDs are poorly constructed and if you upset them in the slightest, your data will be GONE with virtually no way to have it repaired. A couple of months ago, my foot got tangled in the cord and the HD took a light tumble on plush carpet from a height of a little over 12 inches.

That was the end of my HD and a lot of my one of a kind data that I had ported over to it. Gone. Kaput.

Certainly, there is no expectation for HDs to take serious beatings but the poor construction and lack of durability on this Western Digital model is terrible. After I lost all my data, I googled and found that there are MANY others like me who have lost their precious data with this product. Repair is not an option because even at the 'diagnostic' costs of over $1,000, there's no guarantee that they will be able to fix anything. I took mine to a specialty PC shop and tried to get it fixed but the technician (owner) told me it was toast due to the way these are built (apparently a lack of access to the drives).

    So BEWARE....more info
  • Great Product
This is a great product. I purchased it mainly to back up my files and hold the bulk of my media files. I've freed up a lot of space on my laptop.

The drive is quiet. And, has quick access to my files.

I'm very happy with the product thus far....more info

  • Disappointed
I bought this with a lot of confidence in Western Digital. My problem is that it didn't come with any instructions and I can't figure out how it works. I checked their website and couldn't find any tutorials there either. The vendor shipped in a timely manner so my problem isn't with him. I just need to know what I should do. It may be a wonderful product but if I can't get it to work, what good is it to me?...more info
  • great product except you need special cable
it worked fine but I had to wait for a month for WD to send a dual USB cable for it to work on my laptop. remember the HD need alot of power to run and single USB port may not provide enough power.

WD support is not all that great...

  • Fast, Reliable, Works as Advertised
This is my 3rd purchase of a WD passport, and each works exactly as advertised. the backups, after the inital, are very fast. I can back up a couple of laptops and a home PC with this 320 GB. Works GREAT for loading your favorites, documents, email/calendar/contacts (PST files) back onto comptuer. I do frequent OS installs, and so this is an easy way to get back up and running afterward. Lightweight, and small form factor makes easy to carry in my laptop bag without adding any noticeable weight. Glossy black paint job is very nice-looking, but prone to fingerprints and small scratches. That said, i'd still get the black for my own personal preferences. ...more info

  • Durable Portable Harddrive
Just bought this for my husband who was mainly interested in backing up his e-mail from Outlook. I bought this brand because I'd bought basically the same one, with a smaller capacity, about two years ago for my son. My son is a college student who needed a harddrive for his music, videos etc. and who loved the drive. It has run beautifully and held up well. With the capacity, usb plug-in cord, it's a great value for the price. ...more info
  • Awesome Product
I did a lot of digging around before finally deciding to get the My Passport drive. But now that i did, i am extremely happy with it. The performance is good, it looks nice (as nice as a hard drive can look), it is durable, and the price per GB was great.

The only thing that I don't like 100% about the drive is that the edges of the case are a little rough in some spots, it would be nice if the cases were a little more stylish. But I'm not trying to win any fashion awards with it, it's a storage device that i carry data around on.

So all in all, excellent product!...more info
  • Great so far . . .
The drive worked perfectly out of the box with my mac and windows machines. I've had it for a month and so far, no problems. It is USB powered and fits in my shirt pocket along with its 18" cable (when detached and folded). To me it is about 80% as convenient as a flash drive with many times the capacity (and far less probability of my losing it). I can't judge the speed, but it seems fast enough for backups and routine file transfers. I've played video clips and music files from the drive with no interruptions. The outside case is made of what looks like the high impact plastic used in children's toys. The case seems well constructed, however, with solidly bonded seams. So, it seems like a good buy....more info
  • Stay Away!
Many people seem to have luck with this product. It was a complete bust for me!! I had only owned the product for a week. It seemed to be working quite well. So, I decided to reformat my computer's hard drive. I made sure I had everything backed up on the WD external drive.

After reformatting, I had trouble getting my data off. Then, it completely crashed. I had to pay $170 to recover data. I had to recover the data from my PC's hard drive, because the WD external drive was fried. Get something that is made to last. This product is not worthy of any amount you could pay for it. Stay Away!! ...more info
  • Old Reliable
I decided to purchase for my wife a gadget that she needed at least as much as I. (Not that a portable external hard drive should be considered a "gadget" for someone who teaches CS.) But my mistake was in trying to save a few bucks. First, I went with Acomdata which, despite firewire and usb adaptability, proved itself unequal to the task in the first week, thereby permitting me to return it and exchange it for an Iomega drive, which unfortunately ran flawlessly for over a month, past the point of return. (She transports her drives to and from campus on a regular basis, connecting them to a host of Macs and PC's.) Her previous Passport hadn't missed a beat in over six years but was only 80 gigs, so there was no longer any choice to be made except size and color. 500 GB and azure blue it was, and she's a happy camper once again. Except for the times the drive gets misplaced which, given the Passport's compact size (these things have shrunken considerably in the past several years), is not an uncommon occurrence....more info

  • Great Little External
So for years I had this ancient external hard drive that was incredibly loud, and took up gallons of space. When it started dying, I went over all the options for portable drives, and came up with this one as the best option.

    Pros: silent, tiny, portable, cute.
Cons: ... the casing is a bit smudgy?

Really, I haven't run into any cons yet. It's fast, it's silent, and it's highly portable. Not having to plug it into an external power source is a huge bonus for me. For the amount of space and the portability, it's a great deal.

I can't comment on the included syncing program - preferring to control my files manually, I haven't touched it....more info
  • Excellent product
