- They tried to steal money from me!!!
I just wanted to warn everyone about this: McAfee, when you install it, automatically sets up a recurring annual billing cycle, whereby it's service is automatically re-billed to your credit card (or debit card, or checking account, etc.) every year. Under the right circumstances this could be a great convince, not having to worry about manually renewing their services every year. To some of us however the idea of ANYONE automatically taking money from our credit cards or bank accounts is appalling. I fall into that group. As a result I never sign up for recurring billing on anything. Well apparently McAfee has their anti-virus software setup in such a way that rather than having to sign up for recurring billing, you have to instead go out of your way to opt out of it, and unless I missed it somewhere in the fine print, they never inform you of this. So I discovered, about an hour ago, that McAfee had pulled $39.99 out of my bank account (via my Visa debit card). I am on a fixed income and live very much from paycheck to paycheck. For me, that is a lot of money, that will be hard for me to do without. When I spoke with customer service about the matter they were more than happy to give back the money... in 5 to 10 business days.
STAY AWAY FROM McAFEE! They are no better technically than any of the other anti-virus programs, and their business practices are unethical. ...more info
- Great Software
I purchased this software little over a month ago and I have to admit that it works wonderful. Since then, I have visited many sites and the software has blocked at least 5 Trojan horses. Nowadays, the internet has become not only a free source of information but at the same time, it has become a way for companies and private people to sell items online. Unfortunately, as technology progress, criminals also adapt to commit crimes such as online fraud, and personal identity theft. That is why it is so important to protect your computers from unwanted guess and unwanted virus.
McAfee is a great tool that works in your computer all the time, no more worries. Now surf the internet virtually free from software that may damage your computer in the long run.
Thanks McAfee, I have been using your product for several years, and I'm 100% satisfied.
- Only worth the price you paid if you get it for free.
My biggest complaing with McAfee is that it uses a lot of resources when running in the background. My 2nd complaint is that it actually stops working when the subscription expires, other anti-virus scanners will continue to work after the expiration date but will not download updates anymore. McAfee actually stops working which leaves your computer vulnerable between the time it exires and the time you put a new one on there (or pay them $50 to re-subscribe). If you have no virus scanner and can pick up McAfee for free then you might as well do it, otherwise I would pass on it.
A MUCH better product is Trend Micro's Pc-Cillin or any of their bundled products that included Pc-Cillin....more info
- Choose any anti-virus software except this one
If it wasn't scottrade, which provided me this software for free, I would never buy or download Mcafee. When is scanning for the virus, it makes your computer super slow. I have zone alarm on my other desktop, I have no problem with it when it is scanning....more info
- It will not protect your computer
I should have looked up the reviews on the PC Magazine website before paying so much for something that didn't work. I had multiple spywares and other malwares that were not found by McAfee. It made my computer run very slow too. I now have 2 malware programs and both do not make my computer half as slow as McAfee....more info
- Issues with McAfee
I had McAfee before and bought this for renewal.Few issues that I have noted so far are
1.It keeps popping up a message asking to activate and even though I try to activate it does not activate.
2.Recently there was a trojan attack on my computer and McAfee did not even detect the virus leave alone repairing it. I downloaded tools from McAfee and that too was not of any help. Then I downloaded MalwareBytes and that rectified the issue....more info
This product arrived sooner than promised, in excellent condition, less expensive than anywhere else I found on line and in stores, and it works beautifully. What more can I say?...more info
- Only Trouble
There is multiple problems with this product I found. Basically slows down your computer by running constant checks, and updates. It does not allow you to set when these updates take place, so you could be in the midst of doing something like a game, and then your interrupted. This version actually slowed the computer worse than the 2008 system. I had trouble installing it on other computers also. The WORST problem is that it actually did not protect my computer from a virus it now has. Only a week after installing this product my computer was attacked by a virus, and is now looking to be repaired. The whole computer will not run normally now, and McAfee cannot even scan this problem and get rid of it. I contacted McAfee and they could not help me or answer as to why their product let in this virus. I can only say there has to be a product better than this, it is not worth the money. You are paying for only trouble....more info
- still great!
Easy to use and superior quality. McAfee has continued their great product with 2009's edition. The only anti-virus I consider for complete protection....more info
- Gets the job done!

- McAfee Total Peotection 2009
I am familiar with the total protection for business provided by McAfee. I was supporting a lan with 15 workstations and two servers last year without incident. Thus, when the time came for my own pc's protection I choose the total protection 2009. It installed without any problems on my first PC. After I registered online I downloaded/ installed the program into my other two pc's. They all work good. Unlike some other products in the market, total protection does not take control of all of the pc recources. It works unoticed to the user.
I am very happy with it so far....more info
- I despise McAfee
THe McAfee nagware annoys me everytime I start my computer with annoying popups with loud bells that disrupt whatever im doing. And if i forget to mute it before starting it at a library... 100000 curses on the mcafee programmers and business team.
so the other day, my computer catches some virus that tries to start explorer and crashes whenever i open word or notepad. mcafee and microsoft virus scans dont show anything so i try to download the latest version to see if they have a filter for the new strain of spyware or whatever. and mcafee tells me that they no longer support my software and they stopped three weeks ago.
after all that annoyance, when i finally need them... nada. f them. theyre so antisocial, i wouldnt be surprised to learn theyre the ones constructing and releasing viruses onto the internet....more info

- Will NEVER purchase this again!
While McAfee has been good with protecting our computer, I do not feel that it did a job any other program couldn't do. It made using the computer frustrating. I could not figure out how to set it to scan during certain hours. Trying to use the computer while it was scanning was unbearable!!! It slowed everything down to the point you couldn't do ANYTHING! You can set it to scan for updates at certain times, but you can also stop those scans if needed. When it was scanning for viruses, there was no way to stop it. It got so frustrating I just started turning the computer off if it scanned while I was doing something. I would definitely NOT recommend this to anyone!!!...more info

Great price and takes care of PC security fine, but does seem to slow processor down more than my previous Norton PC security....more info
- AOL 9.1 incompatibility issues
AOL 9.1 users beware. There is a compatibility issue between AOL 9.1 and the McAfee Total Protection 2009 and you would not be able to run AOL 9.1 after installing this program. I use McAfee total protection 2008 and had no problem with the older version. The problem was related to the SystemGuard services in the McAfee program. You could disable this service and AOL 9.1 would run. But then you are not getting the full protection for your PC. I contacted on-line support and they recommended to add the AOL IP address to the trusted network. This workaround does not work neither.
The only workaround that seems to work is to go back to AOL 9.0 which I verified with no problem. I do not expect either AOL or McAfee are coming up with a fix for this problem in the near-future....more info
- Works Great
Easy installation plus user friendly. However if your computer has other anitvirus protection you'll have to completely remove it or you'll experience difficulties. I've been using McAfee for years...no problem whatsoever. Nevertheless I always opt for buying the CD rather than the download....more info
- McAfee SUCKS this year
I've had the same problem as others who write that they need to reactivate over and over again. The program has promted me on all 3 of my computers that I need to reinstall the flipping program - over and over and over again. I've always been a fan of McAfee, but I may be switching over to Norton this year. They're definitely going downhill. Not sure if I want to gamble on McAfee 2010....more info
- Reliable. Slowed my machine A LOT. Used to have Norton. Also, Amazon promised a $30 rebate. Never came.
McAfee is a good product, unfortunately it slowed my machine up noticably. The worst part is Amazon promised/listed a $30 rebate (not for using Amazon credit card) and that rebate never came. I'm in contact with them. I used Norton before, liked that better. My peers at work use open source and have better success....more info
- Fed up and Switched
I got the message frequently: Your subscription can not be verified. Uninstalled and reinstalled, and this problem comes back after a while. So my PC is not protected!!! Click "fix" does not fix, and call to support line in India is no help at all.
What a stupid software verification, if Microsoft asks you to verify every week, it is not going to be Microsoft. ...more info
- Partially effective "nagware" that does not properly remove Spyware
When computer users were searching for a term to apply to computer programs that came loaded with viruses, harmful DRM (Digital Rights Management) or other insidious ways of slowing down the user's computer, they eventually settled on "Malware."
Its time to coin a new term for programs like McAfee Total Protection. My complaints against the program are only partially related to its ability to filter out viruses and keep a computer free of junk.
The real issue with this program, and many, many others is that it will constantly steal the users focus by popping up text boxes from the Taskbar in Windows. These can come at ANY time the computer is on. They alert the user to the fact that "McAfee has installed updates," or "It is time to restart the computer" to the neverendingly frustrating "Your subscription is about to expire." These boxes can and will pop up while immersed in a full screen computer game, at times causing it to crash. They will pop up when you are working on editing digital photos, or watching a movie, or anything else that requires your full attention.
The term "nagware," came to mind, and maybe it will stick. Feel free to put your suggestions in the comments section of this review.
I understand why they do this. It is intended for novice computer owners who need to be reminded of all of these things, and who don't consider having their 'focus' (the primary task the computer user is working on. For example, as I write this review, it is my primary focus) stolen as EXTREMELY frustrating. That wouldn't even be a big deal, except that McAfee in their infinite wisdom has provided no remedy for the power user. We cannot turn off these irritating messages. They come regardless of my desire to see them or not.
They are amazingly irritating, especially if they disrupt something immersive, like a computer game or movie. Imagine: you are watching your new blue-ray of "The Dark Knight," and just as Batman is about to dispense with the Joker, a text box pops up with the message "McAfee has finished installing updates" in a gray box in the corner of the screen. Unacceptable in the first place, and even more so because you CANNOT TURN THIS FEATURE OFF! This gets unbearable when your subscription is a few months from expiring, and alerts informing you of that pop up literally every time you use the computer. Also, they don't just leave after they pop up, the user is required to click 'ok.' You cannot permanently disable these messages.
As a virus scanner, McAfee works relatively well. It will scan your system for viruses, and if your definitions are up-to-date, find them some of the time. However, it is pretty strange that after making virus software for so many years, they still cannot provide a reasonably well working Spyware hunter that is anywhere near as good as the free version of "Ad-Aware" offered by Lavasoft, or the retail version of "Spybot Search and Destroy."
Another major complaint is the sheer size of the system resource footprint that McAfee total protection takes up. If you have an older computer, less than 2gb of ram (4gb with Vista), this program will create a very noticeable slowdown in your computer's performance. Comparing to how it runs on my wife's laptop with 4gb of ram vs. some of the computers at my work with only 1.5gb, the older work computers are drastically slowed down by McAfee, while my wife's laptop with its 4gb of ram is not really affected. (I do not use this program on my computer for the reasons that I've laid out above).
In concussion, if you don't care about 1. Annoying pop ups that steal your focus and cannot be disabled, 2. Very limited spyware removal and 3. Slow and poorly written code that uses a large portion of system resources, you MIGHT consider buying this software. ...more info
- An outstanding product at an execellent price!!!
This is an outstanding, easy to install and very effective product at an excellent price!!! Strongly recommended, especially for people who run older Windows versions!!! As a matter of fact it is the only security product that I know of that still protects PCs running Windows 2000!!! ...more info
- Poor Product Support
I am now cursing myself for not checking Amazon reviews first. As other reviewers have noted, this thing does not work with IE8 Beta installed on Vista. This is frustrating because McAfee website does not talk about this anywhere. Uninstalling IE 8 is another issue which is not to be discussed here. I would not recommend this to anybody. I had figure out myself about the IE 8 issue....more info
