I brought this product with high expectations based on the reviews here and my past experience with Norton's Security products. This one is still-born at the gate. All attempts to install the program were thwarted by my inability to register the software because the installation process somehow corrupted the IP address of my computer. After installation it was impossible to connect to the internet. After uninstalling the product and re-establishing internet capabilities, I even called Norton and gave them remote access to my computer. They encountered the same problem that I had once the software was installed: internet access stopped and they were no longer able to remotely control my system. After three hours on the phone with them, they could not resolve the problem. I uninstalled Norton again and upgraded my current security program. ...more info

This product appears to work well. It was easy to install. The only thing I did notice is that it makes my computer run quite a bit slower. ...more info

- Improved and reliable
The Norton Internet Security 2009 is definitely an improvement over all the previous versions. Installment is easy and quick; scanning is also fast and seems to be fairly thorough. I use Firefox 3 so I had to change some of the Norton settings to avoid crashing. After about 8 weeks, everything appears to be running smoothly. ...more info
- Never thought Norton could improve so much
This comes from a former Norton hater who swore he would never buy another Norton product again.
I got a new Dell with Windows Vista. Trend Micro did not allow me to transfer the license from the old dead computer to the new functional one, so I decided to give their competitor a try. I downloaded a trial version of Norton Internet Security. The program worked so well that I never looked back again. Three months later I am still very satisfied.
1. Very rapid scans thanks to Norton insight, an intelligent feature that identifies trusted files and does not keep scanning them over and over again unless it detects an interim change
2. Surprisingly easy on system resources (not like it matters anymore with dual core and 3 gigs of RAM)
3. Potentially dangerous Internet links are marked with a red icon based on Norton's database of harmful web sites; as a result you stay forewarned
4. Very frequent updates
5. Excellent Vista/IE7 compatibility (although see the issue below)
6. Automatically detects and disables intrusion attempts
7. Mostly useless but still cool indicator of CPU usage by the program displayed in the main Norton window
1. The "System Restore Wizard" requires special deactivation of Norton under Windows Vista in order for the wizard to work; see Norton web site for details
2. The interface is less intuitive than Trend Micro, but not a dealbreaker
3. The only way to stop internet traffic is by going through a convoluted succession of menus; you cannot do it from the program tray icon like you could do in Trend Micro
Overall a great program, and I would certainly recommend it (never thought I would say this about a Norton product)...more info
- Works as advertised, faster/better/easier - and customer support came through
The other reviews explain the details. Suffice it to say that the product works as advertised.
Idle time scans are quicker and the default settings now mean that it is rooting out tracking cookies quite efficiently (although I periodically go thru and get rid of them using Norton or Ad-Aware, I have been surprised by how many keep getting deposited and that Norton is finding them so quickly and without any action from me).
It is also noticeably less bloated and resource intensive than the 2008 version. Actions load more quickly and even a full scan leaves me plenty of processor to continue doing my work in Word or a browser.
I've always defaulted to Norton for reasons of ease and inertia. And while I've never been thrilled with the bloated nature of the software, it has always worked just fine and been simple enough that my mother can handle a virus alert.
With this version they've alleviated almost all my prior concerns.
I've read about installation being speedy and am not sure what is wrong with my world. Two machines installed and both took a LONG time to uninstall 2008 (requiring a reboot after uninstall and another reboot after I ran live update on the new install), although the installation of 2009 went much quicker. I can't say that it was in 1 minute, but it was short enough that I didn't notice so wouldn't bother timing it.
The three PC package is an honest balance between protecting their sales and allowing reasonable use of the software at home. Now if they would only let me include my wife's Mac as one of the three, it would be absolute perfection.
New interface is much cleaner. And the new smarter scans have been described in other reviews. The manual and documentation IS terrible, as described by others; thankfully, I don't need it as the software worked out of the box and the configurations were simple enough to run thru quickly on my own. The pulse updates concerned me at first, but I have to admit that I don't notice any heavy load when they are happening (and they do seem to happen often).
This year, my subscription to 2008 was expiring in a month so I looked at renewing. Turns out there was a great sale and the price of the newer 2009 was less than the 2008 renewal (yes, I've seen the posts about upgrading versions after renewal being included, but the 2009 was at way under 1/2 the price of the 2008 renewal).
Only problem I had was that I had 24 days remaining on my 2008 subscription. After installing 2009, I had one year. In essence I had lost a month. I emailed tech support from within the application itself. Had an email back in under 24 hours agreeing with my assessment and telling me that my subscription had been extended for 30 days. I just checked and I now have 394 days remaining. Given the other reviewers' notes on service I was concerned, but they did the right thing and did it quickly (ideally they would handle this better when an upgrade is detected, but whatever... it all worked in the end).
There are free options and even lighter/faster options, but for the typical home user this works and it works very well. Shop it and look for the normal rebates; the price on amazon has fluctuated a lot over the past month even.
- Fantastic product
My previous experience with Norton was not exactly what you would call pleasant. I had used one of their All-In-One Suites back in 2003-2004, and it was heavily laden with problems, random crashes, reboots, and extreme computer lag. At that point I switched to ZoneAlarm Pro which I had wonderful results with until 2008. After a time though I started experiencing some rather surprising problems with ZoneAlarm which dealt with several false positives. Apparently ZoneAlarm was releasing some ill prepared updates which led to it at one point saying my video drivers were a virus and attempting to uninstall them. I noticed in their forums that I was not the only one with these issues, so I started researching for a better and faster program.
All of that researching led me back to Norton Internet Security 2009. I read every review in magazines and online that I could find and all of them led to the conclusion that maybe I should take a "risk" and try it. I figured what the heck; at least I would still have my video drivers-ha.
So I ordered it and at that time it was substantially priced lower on Amazon than anywhere else-even in-store pricing. I uninstalled ZoneAlarm with no problems and installed Norton in about 5 minutes from start to finish, and that included updating Norton to its current update level. I have had no problems running it on my current older computer P4 2.8 running XP. I have no experience with Vista so this is from an XP point of view. My biggest surprise was how fast my computer shuts down now. It used to take at least a minute to completely shut off but now I am down to 15 seconds. My boot time is also much shorter which is always good. I do a great deal of online gaming and ZA sometimes would interrupt that with all it's warnings but Norton just quietly goes about its business and I couldn't be happier. I also use Webroot SpySweeper as a secondary spyware app and they seem to coexist happily.
So I do give this program thumbs up-it seems Norton finally figured out how to do it in a top-notch way without slowing your computer to a crawl with the updates. The background pulse updates really are one of the coolest ideas I had ever heard of and they implement them with ease and speed. Way to go!
- Nobody and no worse
I find very little difference between this edition of Norton's Internet Security and previous versions aside from some small cosmetic changes. Maybe, it's my computer and maybe it's the program, but I don't see a difference at all in the run time. It takes just as long as it always has and on occasion has felt as though it's taken several hours to run a full system scan even when it isn't in the background, quick scans are alot faster and I feel as though it does slow down my other programs when running. I would recommend this product as it works great however, in my experience I just have not seen a beneficial difference in this years edition and last years....more info

- This was a total disappointment
I have had both good and extremely bad experiences with Norton products. I have had two computers completely crash because of Norton products, and I vowed that I would never use another one. However, my Kaspersky license was expiring, and I read the rave reviews of Norton 2009 on both here at Amazon and on various sites with reviews of computer software. I decided to give Norton another try based on the fact that even former Norton haters had been won over by this product.
When I first installed it, I was impressed with the speed with which my computer operated. However, within hours, everything began to go haywire. I uninstalled it and then reinstalled it. Again, it worked for several hours, then every program I worked on caused the screen to freeze up. I uninstalled this product, and reinstalled my Kaspersky for the few days I had left on its license. I then purchased Kaspersky Security Suite 2009 and I'm very happy with it.
Based on the fact that reviews of this product and other computer security products are either extremely favorable or unfavorable, I have come to the conclusion that some computers are just not compatible with certain software. ...more info
- Poor customer service
I have been using Norton Internet Security since 2004. It does a good job of protecting the computer. However, it slows the computer. Contacting the company is a big headache because it is hard to access them. Their customer service leaves much to be desired. Moreover, inorder to gain the rebate money, there is another harrowing ordeal. They send you a debit card which is often declined by many merchants especially online. So try another comapany like Zone Alarm or Kaspersky...more info
- Does not clean all spywares

- Very happy
We had our computer get a virus around Christmas time and have been paranoid about doing anything online ever since. I wanted to get a virus shield as well as a firewall and didn't want to get two seperate programs. CNET downloads had some good options but, again, we didn't want to download anything. We've had Norton 2009 installed for a few weeks and have already had viruses detected and erased as well as other random things. I was really weary about going with this brand since I had had problems with their software in the past, but I am completely impressed with the ease of use with this version. Very easy to set up and it didn't transform our IE display, it just added a tool bar at the top that allows you to access your set up. The only annoying thing is that is asks you if you want to have some security set up every time you sign in to an account. Kind of annoying but you can turn it off. Very pleased overall....more info
- Comprehensive Coverage but light on memory and CPU usage
This product covers many different internet related threats as well as anti virus, anti spam, anti phishing, internet security and identity protection. It is comprehensive in nature but at the same time very light on memory usage and CPU processing. I would definitely recommend this product to any one considering internet security suite. I gave 4-stars and not 5-stars because I want Symantec to cover more than 3 PC's that it currently covers. ...more info
- NIS 2009 Finally a Terrific Symantec Product - But..!
I've used Norton products since long before they were acquired by Symantec. I wept when that happened...having had nothing but problems with Symantec's software previously. Over the years, I saw my worst fears realized as each successive version of Norton Utilities and Norton Antivirus degraded under Symantec's stewardship. That changed in May after my subscription to NIS 2008 expired, and I decided (aided by two rebate programs)to install NIS 2009. It appears they finally got it right. Installation was easy (a first for NIS in several years), the program has added new and welcome security features seemingly without increasing system overhead, and nothing has crashed...yet! The program seems lean and mean, and more important, very effective.
It does have one nasty nasty feature...and that is Symantec's insistence in forcing a subscription renewal at the end of one year. The cost of renewal is ridiculously high, and the sudden loss of protection if action is not taken is unconscionable. Personally, I solved that problem when my subscription to NIS 2008 expired in March. I simply switched to the McAfee program offered free by my Internet provider UNTIL Symantec offered one of its frequent rebate programs, which allowed me to purchase NIS 2009 in May for a net cost of $[...].
It ticks me off that the scum prowling the Internet ruin it for the rest of us by making it absolutely essential to purchase protection. I blame Microsoft for not writing secure code to begin with, but until a competitive vermin-proof operating system is available, I guess we just have to live with the expense and inconvenience of Norton Security and its ilk....more info

- I thought Norton have good products
It has been 3 weeks since I got this software. So far I had 2 problems and both time I had to contact Symantec because the problems were not easy to correct. First time, the software had been working fine for about 2 weeks, it did scheduled scans, the firewall worked fine until one day about a week ago, the smart firewall had an error, I clicked on FIX and it would not fix itself. I contacted Symantec support, I was told that an when downloading the latest virus updates an error ocurred and that I had to uninstall and install the software, it did not make sense to me but I did it and the problem was gone. Two days later, the history log of scanned items was growing and there was no way for me to clear the log, before the latest install I could clear the log with no problems. I searched in preferences, settings and there was no option to turn the 'clear log' button on. Called Symantec again, the support person asked for permission to connect to my pc, I kept watching what he was doing, I do not know what he did behind the scenes to fix the problem, that if it happens again; I would not be able to fix it. He restarted my pc, went to Norton SEcurity and there it was the 'clear log' button available, I click on it and the log got clear. That is 2 problems within 3 weeks. I still have about 340 days left but when is time to renew I will probably look for other software. ...more info
- Norton finally gets it right
I've avoided Norton's security suites for years, based on their consistent ability to make the most powerful computer run like an old 486. I finally gave in to the flood of good reviews for Norton Internet Security 2009 and gave it a try... and I'm glad I did.
Resource use is minimal... and I mean *minimal*. When the program isn't performing an activity, it's almost invisible to system monitors. When it is active, it's still very low-key. I run it on 3 different systems (as allowed by the license), one of which is an old Celeron 800mhz. The old Celeron runs just as well as it did before Norton was installed. The freeware virus scanners I have used on that system (Avast!, AVG) really taxed the meager resources, making a huge performance hit.
The other thing I really like- it's quiet. Norton has decided (rightfully, in my opinion) that the average user doesn't really understand- or *want* to understand- computer security. It therefore makes it's own decisions about system configuration, including when & how to alert the user about virus's or firewall intrusion prevention. The experienced user can still dig into the settings and make the program 'loud', with lot's of messages and warnings. Me, I like the quiet. I kept a very close eye on my systems for the first month, to make sure I was satisfied with how Norton Internet Security 2009 was handling things. Then I forgot about it... the way this stuff is supposed to work.
All in all, Norton has a winner here. I hope they use the same design philosophy in the rest of their software suites....more info
- Worked excellently and then...
I am an advanced user and had purchased NIS 2009 several weeks ago by downloading through Amazon. It had been working extremely well until yesterday after running their Live Update. After a required reboot, I was unable to use Windows Explorer to copy, cut, rename, etc., any files or folders. Anytime I right-clicked on a file, folder, or icon, I got the infamous "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." error message. After using my laptop (Dell Inspiron 6000) for a few minutes, an NIS 2009 window popped up and said I had a "3039,1" error with instructions for me to follow. The instructions were to run Live Update again, restart the computer, and run a Full System Scan. It said if this didn't work, download the Norton Removal Tool, which I did. (This was provided as part of the instructions.) It uninstalls more than a dozen "older" versions of Norton software. After I rebooted, my computer began operating normally again...except NIS 2009 was not installed to protect my laptop of course. They sent a link for me to download the latest version and I did. I installed it again (per their instructions) and the problem reoccurred...which being unable to use Windows Explorer makes it unusable. I then contacted Norton again and entered a chat session with an "analyst". After several minutes of chatting with him, he provided me with a link with instructions that would have taken an incredibly long time, and which would have just been the beginnning of the debugging process. This first step was to start only Microsoft and Norton services. It was obvious that I was going to be online with this gentleman for at least an hour or two. It was also obvious that he was not certain that all these changes expected for me to make would even work! I became very frustrated as things went on and eventually told him that I would simply uninstall NIS 2009 and use the previous software I was using instead of doing all the steps he wanted me to perform. So, as soon as I submit this review I will uninstall NIS 2009 and reinstall the free version of Zone Alarm, McAfee Enterprise 8.7i, and various antispyware freeware. Oh well...live and learn. I only wish Amazon had 0 stars as an option because that is what software that doesn't work should score....more info

- So far so good...
Well, so far so good... I've had a 'bad taste' in my mouth about all things Norton since the mid to late '90's, and have never tried them since, until the purchase of this product today. I have to say, I'm very pleased at the install ease and 'seemed' protection I'm receiving. I've had CA, & CounterSpy recently, they were 'ok', but it seemed that my CounterSpy had been freezing up my pc on an almost daily basis, I can't swear that it was CounterSpy, but I have since uninstalled it before installing my new Norton Internet Security 2009, and I've had no freeze ups yet, in fact my pc is running considerably faster after the NIS install... As long as it works this good for the life of my computer and yearly $50 updates, I'm happy......more info
