When computer users were searching for a term to apply to computer programs that came loaded with viruses, harmful DRM (Digital Rights Management) or other insidious ways of slowing down the user's computer, they eventually settled on "Malware."
Its time to coin a new term for programs like McAfee Total Protection. My complaints against the program are only partially related to its ability to filter out viruses and keep a computer free of junk.
The real issue with this program, and many, many others is that it will constantly steal the users focus by popping up text boxes from the Taskbar in Windows. These can come at ANY time the computer is on. They alert the user to the fact that "McAfee has installed updates," or "It is time to restart the computer" to the neverendingly frustrating "Your subscription is about to expire." These boxes can and will pop up while immersed in a full screen computer game, at times causing it to crash. They will pop up when you are working on editing digital photos, or watching a movie, or anything else that requires your full attention.
The term "nagware," came to mind, and maybe it will stick. Feel free to put your suggestions in the comments section of this review.
I understand why they do this. It is intended for novice computer owners who need to be reminded of all of these things, and who don't consider having their 'focus' (the primary task the computer user is working on. For example, as I write this review, it is my primary focus) stolen as EXTREMELY frustrating. That wouldn't even be a big deal, except that McAfee in their infinite wisdom has provided no remedy for the power user. We cannot turn off these irritating messages. They come regardless of my desire to see them or not.
They are amazingly irritating, especially if they disrupt something immersive, like a computer game or movie. Imagine: you are watching your new blue-ray of "The Dark Knight," and just as Batman is about to dispense with the Joker, a text box pops up with the message "McAfee has finished installing updates" in a gray box in the corner of the screen. Unacceptable in the first place, and even more so because you CANNOT TURN THIS FEATURE OFF! This gets unbearable when your subscription is a few months from expiring, and alerts informing you of that pop up literally every time you use the computer. Also, they don't just leave after they pop up, the user is required to click 'ok.' You cannot permanently disable these messages.
As a virus scanner, McAfee works relatively well. It will scan your system for viruses, and if your definitions are up-to-date, find them some of the time. However, it is pretty strange that after making virus software for so many years, they still cannot provide a reasonably well working Spyware hunter that is anywhere near as good as the free version of "Ad-Aware" offered by Lavasoft, or the retail version of "Spybot Search and Destroy."
Another major complaint is the sheer size of the system resource footprint that McAfee total protection takes up. If you have an older computer, less than 2gb of ram (4gb with Vista), this program will create a very noticeable slowdown in your computer's performance. Comparing to how it runs on my wife's laptop with 4gb of ram vs. some of the computers at my work with only 1.5gb, the older work computers are drastically slowed down by McAfee, while my wife's laptop with its 4gb of ram is not really affected. (I do not use this program on my computer for the reasons that I've laid out above).
In concussion, if you don't care about 1. Annoying pop ups that steal your focus and cannot be disabled, 2. Very limited spyware removal and 3. Slow and poorly written code that uses a large portion of system resources, you MIGHT consider buying this software. ...more info
- Reliable. Slowed my machine A LOT. Used to have Norton. Also, Amazon promised a $30 rebate. Never came.
McAfee is a good product, unfortunately it slowed my machine up noticably. The worst part is Amazon promised/listed a $30 rebate (not for using Amazon credit card) and that rebate never came. I'm in contact with them. I used Norton before, liked that better. My peers at work use open source and have better success....more info
- Only Trouble
There is multiple problems with this product I found. Basically slows down your computer by running constant checks, and updates. It does not allow you to set when these updates take place, so you could be in the midst of doing something like a game, and then your interrupted. This version actually slowed the computer worse than the 2008 system. I had trouble installing it on other computers also. The WORST problem is that it actually did not protect my computer from a virus it now has. Only a week after installing this product my computer was attacked by a virus, and is now looking to be repaired. The whole computer will not run normally now, and McAfee cannot even scan this problem and get rid of it. I contacted McAfee and they could not help me or answer as to why their product let in this virus. I can only say there has to be a product better than this, it is not worth the money. You are paying for only trouble....more info

- Great Software
I purchased this software little over a month ago and I have to admit that it works wonderful. Since then, I have visited many sites and the software has blocked at least 5 Trojan horses. Nowadays, the internet has become not only a free source of information but at the same time, it has become a way for companies and private people to sell items online. Unfortunately, as technology progress, criminals also adapt to commit crimes such as online fraud, and personal identity theft. That is why it is so important to protect your computers from unwanted guess and unwanted virus.
McAfee is a great tool that works in your computer all the time, no more worries. Now surf the internet virtually free from software that may damage your computer in the long run.
Thanks McAfee, I have been using your product for several years, and I'm 100% satisfied.
- McAfee SUCKS this year
I've had the same problem as others who write that they need to reactivate over and over again. The program has promted me on all 3 of my computers that I need to reinstall the flipping program - over and over and over again. I've always been a fan of McAfee, but I may be switching over to Norton this year. They're definitely going downhill. Not sure if I want to gamble on McAfee 2010....more info
- not worth the money
I have ran mcaffee for 3 months. It worked fine. Now it tells me every three seconds that my computer is under attack. Every website I go to is now unprotected (Amazon, AOL, google, compuserve, even Mcaffee). I tried to download Panda antivirus. Mcaffee identified it as ,you guessed it, a virus. This is the perfect software for the person who wants to shut down his computer forever. Once I figure out how to delete it from my computer I am going to run with Panda security....more info
- TOTAL PROTECTION DOES NOT TOTALLY PROTECT-Total protection Mcafee 2009
Virus came after as soon as installing Mcafee 2009.
I accepted the change when virus attacked.
(Mcafee alerted me though,,I dont blame Mcafee fully)
TO SOLVE : I had to re-formatte the hard drive after scanning 3 times.
After 2 week of use again their is new virus.
Mcafee disabled it but was not able to remove it fully.
It has asked me to reboot and scan again.
TOTAL PROTECTION DOES NOT TOTALLY PROTECT.
We better watch out whats happening in the PC.
- Gets the job done!
I always buy McAfee due to this program having great compatibility with my other programs. It also detected something right after I installed the program. I'm very happy with my choice....more info
- Be very carefull
After I installed this on my XP I was not able to register the product because it totally shut my Internet connection down, when I called for help of how to get it to work they wanted to Charge me close to ten dollard to talk to them, I do have a different version of McAfee on the computer with Vista and it has been a very good program. I am still looking for a antivirus for the XP, that I should not have to be afraid to install. I did have Norton on it but the updates were very slow...more info

- 2 out of 3 Ain't bad
Installed this on 3 machines, Two of the machines I had no problems, but not the same story on the third. BSOD (Blue screen of death). Not sure why. The machine that I got the BSOD on is the same exact machine as one of the ones that did not have a problem. Uninstalled and reinstalled several times, still got BSOD. I've been using MacAfee for years and never had this problem before. I'm sure the problem must have been something that is (was) installed. ...more info

- McAfee Total Protection
I was a long time user of Symantec's Norton products and became unhappy with the way these products entangled themselves within the software on my machines so I wanted to try McAfee products again. This is my second subscription of the Total Protection product and I like the way it functions quite well. If I were to suggest "things" I would like to see in the product the first would be the cost. If I had not searched extensively to find this offering, the cost would have been excessive, in my opinion. I would also like to see the product run faster, if this is possible. All in all, I'm very satisfied with the features of this product and will purchase it again....more info
- mcafee worked excellent
mcafee worked great for me..I like the cleaner that comes with total protection...amazon had it for $20 cheaper then i could have gotten any were else..also like it that with mcafee you can right click any file and scan just that paticular one.....more info
- Took support to install
It's difficult to wade through all of the support questions and answers to help cure the problems that can go wrong on installing this package. I had to finally call support twice to get me installed. They were knowledgable (I guess) as I finally got it installed, however it shouldn't have been that difficult. The instructions that came with the package were in correct. Anyway, if you're upgrading from a previous McAfee product, be prepared to call support or else wade through their web pages for answers....more info
- Fed up and Switched
I got the message frequently: Your subscription can not be verified. Uninstalled and reinstalled, and this problem comes back after a while. So my PC is not protected!!! Click "fix" does not fix, and call to support line in India is no help at all.
What a stupid software verification, if Microsoft asks you to verify every week, it is not going to be Microsoft. ...more info
- It will not protect your computer
I should have looked up the reviews on the PC Magazine website before paying so much for something that didn't work. I had multiple spywares and other malwares that were not found by McAfee. It made my computer run very slow too. I now have 2 malware programs and both do not make my computer half as slow as McAfee....more info
- works well by me
It was easy to install and seems to be working well on all 3 computers....more info
- Issues with McAfee
I had McAfee before and bought this for renewal.Few issues that I have noted so far are
1.It keeps popping up a message asking to activate and even though I try to activate it does not activate.
2.Recently there was a trojan attack on my computer and McAfee did not even detect the virus leave alone repairing it. I downloaded tools from McAfee and that too was not of any help. Then I downloaded MalwareBytes and that rectified the issue....more info

- Unethical billing for online purchases -- BEWARE!
I posted this review first for the VirusScan 3-user product, but it is SO IMPORTANT that folks understand up-front about McAfee's billing practices, that I'm posting it here as well. It would be really great if McAfee monitored these reviews and made changes as a result.
Let me say right up front if you DO NOT USE the online download and payment process which McAfee offers, then you should not be subjected to their unethical practices (unless/until you renew online.)
I've used McAfee for several years now, and the product, once paid for and installed, in my experience, has been fine. Yes, it gets annoying at times, with its checks and confirmations, but that's what we want: software to protect us, and that comes with some caveats.
But McAfee has finally LOST me as a customer, with their insidious and unethical billing practices. These practices are so awful that the product absolutely deserves zero stars, regardless of its functionality.
My 1-year subscription to VirusScan ended a few days ago. This was a 3-user subscription, which I had obtained for free from a financial services company with whom I do business. It was a one-time deal, so now I need to pay to renew. This was my experience:
First, the renewal price was discounted through the financial services company, to around forty bucks, which was less than I saw online elsewhere. I proceeded to pay with PayPal. Just BEFORE I pressed the "return to McAfee" button, Paypal told me that I could review the "billing agreement" (what billing agreement?) by logging back into Paypal, going to "Profile," and kicking "Pay List" (what Pay List?) I did so, and found that McAfee, WITHOUT ANY NOTICE, AND WITHOUT MY PERMISSION had set up an automatic billing allowance on my PayPal account for one hundred twenty dollars per month! Here is the exact text: "Billing Limit: $119.97 USD (per month)" Needless to say, I immediately canceled that authorization, before "returning to McAfee." McAfee of course complained that there was an "error," but I simply proceeded to pay with credit card.
That's when I saw the very small type, in GRAY (hard-to-read) coloring, saying that my credit card would be billed automatically, upon expiration of the license, at the full renewal rate at that time.
That's enough, McAfee! You stop these unethical billing practices right now! You've lost another customer, and hopefully many more with this review....more info
- McAfee is great!
Easy to use and works effortlessly in the background. never had a virus or attacks on my system. A+...more info
- Help I'm Trapped! Watch Out You Don't Get Trapped
I have no complaints about the operation of this product on a Windows Vista system, but somehow (in my opinion in a sneaky manner) without my awareness, the "Auto-renewal" feature was set up that automatically updates at the end of the year and directly charges your credit card!
To stop this "feature", they give you three options, but none are easy. Using phone call costs you. The chat client doesn't download, and the email means you have to wait 48 hours for a reply.
I am disappointed. Be careful you don't get caught in this trap. Otherwise, is OK product as far as I can tell....more info
- Works Great
Easy installation plus user friendly. However if your computer has other anitvirus protection you'll have to completely remove it or you'll experience difficulties. I've been using McAfee for years...no problem whatsoever. Nevertheless I always opt for buying the CD rather than the download....more info
- I despise McAfee
THe McAfee nagware annoys me everytime I start my computer with annoying popups with loud bells that disrupt whatever im doing. And if i forget to mute it before starting it at a library... 100000 curses on the mcafee programmers and business team.
so the other day, my computer catches some virus that tries to start explorer and crashes whenever i open word or notepad. mcafee and microsoft virus scans dont show anything so i try to download the latest version to see if they have a filter for the new strain of spyware or whatever. and mcafee tells me that they no longer support my software and they stopped three weeks ago.
after all that annoyance, when i finally need them... nada. f them. theyre so antisocial, i wouldnt be surprised to learn theyre the ones constructing and releasing viruses onto the internet....more info
- Choose any anti-virus software except this one
If it wasn't scottrade, which provided me this software for free, I would never buy or download Mcafee. When is scanning for the virus, it makes your computer super slow. I have zone alarm on my other desktop, I have no problem with it when it is scanning....more info
- McAfee Total Peotection 2009
I am familiar with the total protection for business provided by McAfee. I was supporting a lan with 15 workstations and two servers last year without incident. Thus, when the time came for my own pc's protection I choose the total protection 2009. It installed without any problems on my first PC. After I registered online I downloaded/ installed the program into my other two pc's. They all work good. Unlike some other products in the market, total protection does not take control of all of the pc recources. It works unoticed to the user.
I am very happy with it so far....more info
