- Still the Best Antivirus
I recieved this product on time and followed the directions on the box. They were not exactly correct. It seems that no matter what you should uninstall the old product first and then install the new product. Otherwise its a great antivirus that does not slow down your computer like others do....more info
- It's 10:30 pm, and why am I sitting at my computer.
I have used McAffee for a couple of years, but this one is real junk. Since the last update, the console that allows me to stop a scan no longer appears. It scans whenever it feels like it. The infected files list in the log has a length of about 10 characters ( nothing like you have an infection in C:/Program_f. ) It gives false positives.
So, why am I sitting at my computer. Well McAffee decided to scan even though it was scheduled to run at 7am. I can't stop it, and it will not let windows shut down. So, I suppose I do what I now have to do to shut down my computer - pull the plug.
- Good product
I got this product last month from amazon.com promotion. It was working good for me so far . Nice to have it bro!!!...more info
- I HATE THIS PROGRAM
I HATE THIS PROGRAM. Everyday there is something it does to waste my time. The most annoying ritual is I have to activate it several times a day. When I missed doing so, I had to re-install the program (downloading and installation - about 90 minutes). Several times a month the automatic update causes errors, at the least I have to stop everything and re-boot several time, or more often than not, the program informs me I have to re-install ... again. It doesn't work in the background either, whenever it decides to do something, (scan, download, update the program). Everything I'm doing crawls to a halt. No warning either, if I am doing something that needs the processor or the internet... too bad. (The only thing you can stop is the scan, if you look for the hidden icon, but by then it is too late.) If you try to change the settings (if you can find them) it announces you are unprotected all the time. Finally, they send you a butt load of ads that pop up on your desktop and you have to click the button "continue with what I am doing"...more info
- Very good. Worth the investment.
McAfee Internet Security 2009 - 3 user version
I've tried most of the security application brands over the years including McAfee, Norton, Zone Alarm, MS, et. al.. Sadly, there's no perfect solution but it's a game we all must play if we want to keep our PCs operational. What may be good one year will be terrible the next so be prepared to switch. There are too many variables that can affect the installation, operation, and effectiveness of these applications to know which is best. That said, I believe that McAfee IS 2009 is worth the purchase.
I postponed my switch, and subsequent review, from my current application to McAfee, and then I wanted to use this one for a while and see it in action before deciding if I could recommend it.. I can and do without reservation. All testing has been done on XP Pro (Vista comes next) I took the time to go through the settings before I let it lose. There's a lot to configure, including how it handles updates (to your computer and McAfee), virus scans, junk email, disk backups, firewall interactions, and your network. So far, it handles all these extremely well. On the first scan it picked up a Trojan that MS Onecare has missed (repeatedly) but McAfee did nag me about something that was not a problem. Better the nagging than the miss I think...
Most of the usual goodies are included but there are some nice touches to the way these controls work. The network selection shows you a network map, clearly illustrating your computer, the modem (and its connection status) and other devices such as laptops or other computers, NAS (network drives), etc. Clicking on one of these elements provides additional details such as status and IP address. This is a handy too in my opinion as some of the elements in my network have different IP addresses at different times.
There's a Shredder that lets you delete (permanently) files from your computer which is unlike the typical windows version of delete that just erases the FAT entry (or equivalent depending on OS and disk format). You can choose a shredding level (effectiveness) from 3 options: 1) "Quick" which used one pass, 2) comprehensive (7 passes) or 3) custom with up to 10 passes. That data will be gone for good, so make no mistakes here.
There are a few questionable items too, like the Virus Map. The purportedly tells you, real-time, "where the latest viruses are infecting computers worldwide". As expected, both the US and EU are highlighted as active areas. Useless... Where are the most computers in the world? I leave it to you to figure that one out... I'm also not too sure about the effectiveness of the visual IP trace feature (identifies routes to your computer) as I haven't used it much. If it does work, it can be a great feature for tracking bugs.
In summary; so far so good. McAfee 2009 has the features, quality, and ease of use most people will appreciate and I'll recommend it to everyone. I'll update this review should problems develop, but I'm quite satisfied right now. The next steps are to test it on my two Vista machines in both 32 (Business) and 64 (Home Premium) bit versions. I'll add those comments, positive or negative, after I'm satisfied I've give it a thorough test.
WARNING: I would caution anyone thinking about changing protection (i.e., AV, internet firewall, program management, etc.) programs to think long and hard about how and when they make a switch. As an example, if you're already using Outlook's email filtering you need to decide if you want double duty or which application should take charge. I'm not sure myself, but right now, I've left that job to Outlook. Changing protection programs almost always requires work, and the result can be frustration and loss of productivity if you're not sure what you're doing. This is pretty foolproof, but.........more info
- Great Protection
The McAfee Internet Security software was very easy to load into my system. I like the way it runs in the background with no interference to anything else I am doing. The updates come automatically and it does a complete scan of my system at set intervals, again with no interference to any other programs that I may be running at the time....more info

- No go on Vista
After moving to Vista with a new PC a year and a half ago, I continued to use McAfee. (new PC with dual AMD processors and 6 gig of RAM!). However, in the past six months or so, my PC started to experience "not responding" errors across numerous applications. I was getting ready to do a fresh OS install when I decided to try Windows OneCare. Believe it or not, this MS product (so far at least) solved my issues. Before you purchase McAfee, read up on CNET or other sites, as you will find other alternatives that do not negatively impact performance such as I experienced. ...more info
- Crashed my computer...grrrr....
I have had McAfee protection on my computer all along, and knowing that my subscription was about to run out, I purchased the Total Protection 2009 package for 3 computers. Halfway into loading it onto my laptop, carefully following the directions - I got the Blue Screen of Death, and then the screen went blank.
My son, who has a college degree in IT, has been slowly coaxing my computer back to life...but now the McAfee refuses to load. He will be talking to McAfee, and hopefully, we can get my laptop up and running and protected. But until I know what happened, I will NOT be installing the 2 other packages on any other of our computers....more info

- The pop up warning boxes are the worst!
I am so sorry I bought this piece of junk security software. I used to use Norton; however, because Norton did not have a price for single computer users and I did not want to pay for a 3-computer price when I only have one computer, I decided to purchase McAfee this year. Just don't do it.
The first night I download the software I got the message that there was incompatible software, but it didn't say what software that was. It sent me a link to their virtual technician, which checked my computer and gave it the all clear. Three times it did the same. So, I went to their on-line chat assistance. You can't call them unless you pay an extra fee to do so. Although it said it would take 9 minutes, someone came on in less then 5. I allowed them access to my computer and they were able to determine there were still a couple pieces of software connected with Norton on my computer. Apparently, Norton downloads several pieces of software and I only deleted the two I found and left two on my computer. McAfee also sent me a link to Norton to completely deinstall all their programs. That chat went ok.
One day after having McAfee on my computer I started receiving Security Warning pop-up boxes and every single website I visited. To make matters worse I had to press the yes button six (6) times to get rid of the box. So, back I went to chat. Again, I was told it would take 9 minutes for someone to come on. This time it took 45 minutes. It was apparent that "Boney" the tech could not really read English. Boney was unable to determine what I wanted when all I wanted to know as whow to turn off or disable the Security Warning pop-up boxes. The lag time between my posts and Boney's were so long I'm sure Boney was looking for key words or phrases in order to answer me. Eventually, Boney sent me a link to "preinstall McAfee" then told me to reinstall the software. When I refused Boney said all I needed to do was to reboot and the pop-ups would go away. I asked if Boney even read my posts and how it was possible that the pop-ups would go away when I had not done anything to disable them. Boney assured me it was taken care of. So, I rebooted. Well, of course, as I suspected, I am still getting the stupid Security Warning pop-up boxes. I even get them on the McAfee website!
If anyone knows how to disable them - please leave me a comment and let me know. I went to the McAfee website and there is so much stuff in there - nothing says anything about those stupid pop-up boxes. I also opened up the Mcafee icon and tried to determine what to click or unclick to get rid of those warnings, but nothing works.
Oh, if you're planning on purchasing this internet security software - I would advise against it. Although Norton is way overpriced, at least for the two years I had it I did not have a single problem with it.
If anyone knows of a reasonable priced internet security software that works and does not give headaches, please let me know....more info
- This was a great deal
This was a great price for this product. Installed with not problems. Love the parental controls....more info
- Least amount of annoyances
I'm writing strictly to discuss the software's presence rather than effectiveness as that seems more difficult to measure. It did clean a thing or 2 on my system after I installed it and I'm not experiencing any signs of having a virus.
I have a Vista Ultimate PC and I've tried Norton's products and Bit Defender's products and both of them gave me issues. Norton was constantly suggesting that something was wrong with updating my product and wouldn't would throw errors when trying to update. After following their trouble shooting tips, absolutely nothing worked to fix the problem. Frequently a scan would hang and never finish. Bit defender was constantly throwing notifications and seemed to have a performance hit to the machine.
McAfee however... easy install, runs scans effectively, minimal notifications, and no appearant performance hit. I had them 2 years ago as well and it never gave me problems then either. I'm sticking with McAfee for the fewest headaches and seeming effectiveness....more info
- OK (If you can get it to install properly)
For many years I used Norton, but the last version I used slowed my computer down, so I switched to McAfee a couple of years ago and was pretty happy with it. When my subscription expired, I purchased IS 2009. It works OK and I like the Site Advisor feature, but installing it was a nightmare. On my first attempt, the install hung up, so I manually uninstalled my old version and tried again. I couldn't get Site Advisor to work and it kept prompting me to activate my product. So I tried to uninstall/install with no success. Finally, after rooting around through the support site, which I didn't find all that good, I downloaded a separate product (MCPR.EXE)from McAfee which uninstalls old versions (even though the new version is supposed to uninstall the old one). After running that, I finally got the new version to install properly.
If I were switching to a different program, I might expect some glitches, but upgrading to a new version from the same company should NOT be this painful. This is probably my last version of McAfee....more info
- Caused my computer to crash and had to reload Vista
I have had my computer for over a year with no problems, until I inserted this cd, that is. I don't know what happened but all of a sudden my computer was freezing and had to be restarted. However, when I restarted my computer it went to the BSoD (Blue Screen of Death for those who have not had this honor...) and never recovered. I looked up all kinds of information on the error code and basically I had no option but to reload Windows. I then had to run out and buy an external hard drive to back up all of my files, but that ended up being in vain because Vista apparently doesn't like recovery files... But that's a whole different issue. Anyways, this item ended up costing me a lot more than the initial price for the software, not to mention all the headache. I think I'll just stick with Norton....more info
- McAffee Upgrade
Easy to install from the disc as long as the original version was uninstalled; updates are automatic. Can't recommend the online download option......more info
- Installed over my lunch break
This item was very install on my laptop that runs on Windows Vista. My laptop had an older version of McAfee and during the installation the old version was removed and replaced with the new version that I had ordered. I have not noticed that my laptop takes longer to start up as other reviewers had stated. I like the little rating icon that I get in the upper left hand corner in regards to the safety of a web site that I visit; nice to know that someone is looking out for you.
Purchasing this product was a lot cheaper than renewing my current subscription to McAfee.
I would highly recommend this product....more info
I installed McAfee Internet Security 2009 according to instructions, but my system continued to show the previous version which was expiring in a few days. After several attempts to correct the situation, I called McAfee Technical support and spent 20 minutes with the automated system and on hold before a live person finally told me I had to uninstall the old product before installing the new one. It surely would have been helpful if they had disclosed that information in the box instructions. I have used McAfee security products for about 6 years and don't especially like the product, but it is way better than Norton, which invades every aspect of your computer. I wish someone would develop a security software package that does only what the user needs and nothing more - for example, I have at least 4 products installed that offer e-mail protection and I have to be very careful that they don't override each other. I have also noticed that whenever I have a technical problem with an Microsoft product, the MS experts suggest that it is being caused by McAfee or Norton....more info

- good but not much different
This is a great anti-virus. But I can't hardly notice anything different from last years. Its virus detection is basically the same. Although i have had any recently. The only new key feature that I notice was McAfee easy share which lets you easily set up a network and make it secure to transfer data between you computers. Other then that that pretty much sums it up. It is a good anti-virus just not much more to add to the table....more info
