The Asus Eee PC 900 provides the power of a full-sized laptop in a compact body with a larger 8.9-inch screen. Even with the larger size of the Eee PC 900 when compared to the original Eee PC, the new model weighs just over 2 pounds--perfect for students toting to school or road warriors packing away to Wi-Fi hotspots. And because it uses flash memory instead of a hard drive (with 16 GB of storage), the Eee PC 900 is optimal for weathering rough handling and sharing space in overstuffed bags.

The Asus Eee PC 900's 8.9-inch screen is easier on the eyes, and the integrated webcam makes video chats a snap.
Other features include a 1.3-megapixel webcam integrated into the bezel above the LCD, a Secure Digital memory card slot, Wi-Fi connectivity (802.11b/g), multiple USB ports, a VGA output for connecting to a monitor, and 1 GB of RAM. It comes preinstalled with the Microsoft Windows XP Home operating system, which offers more experienced users an enhanced and innovative experience that incorporates Windows Live features like Windows Live Messenger for instant messaging and Windows Live Mail for consolidated email accounts on your desktop. Complementing this is Microsoft Works, which equips the user with numerous office applications to work efficiently.

For journalists, photographers and other professionals who need to use a computer in the field to create, to communicate and to collaborate with other colleagues, the Eee PC's combination of power, extreme portability and rugged build makes it the ideal computing solution. It's also a great choice for young students, with a built-in Dictionary that's great for homework, and it includes two modes of intuitive graphic user interface design to accommodate both experienced and inexperienced PC users. The Eee PC also handles your digital images, movies, and music as well as Internet radio.

The Eee PC with Windows Home XP operating system provides a familiar interface.
Nicely light at just 35 ounces, the Eee PC 900 has an 8.9-inch wide TFT LCD with a 1024 x 600-pixel resolution (WXGA)--making it more comfortable on eyes than its predecessor. Under the hood is a 900 MHz Intel Mobile CPU with integrated Intel graphics processor, 1 GB of RAM (not expandable), and 16 GB of flash memory solid-state drive (SSD). The SSD provides quiet performance and helps save energy, while its shock-proof solid state design helps to guard against data loss or shock-related damage if the laptop is dropped.

In addition to its wireless LAN, it also offers wired Fast Ethernet connectivity. The Eee PC includes software for Web browsing (Firefox), e-mail, OpenOffice 2.0 for creating and editing word processing documents and spreadsheets, and a suite of other productivity software to help keep you on track.

Customer Reviews:

  • Just OK, but really really slow
This is the SLLLLLOOOOWWWEEESSST computer on the face of the earth. I was very unsatisfied with it's processing speed. I beefed up the RAM and it helped, but very little. It is CRAZY slow. It can take over a minute just to open up programs. I don't recommend unless you have patience. As for pluses, it's size is handy. It has great screen for viewing movies. I called the 1-800 number to talk to tech about trying to get the computer running faster. Here's what he said "you get what you paid for." My mouth dropped wide open. What an idiot....more info
  • Good device, though not perfect
pros: lightweight, slim, really portable. Good screen, sufficient amount of USB ports.

cons: two hours battery life is not that much. Windows operation is a kind
of slow. May be one can optimize that but that's what one get out of the box. Keys are small and touch typing will be difficult for the first time. ...more info
  • Don't buy - known issue with the SSD
I bought this model to use for work after the great experience my husband had with an earlier version of one of these. What a mistake. Of all the models I could have bought, I bought the one that has a horrible hard drive, making it so slow it's almost completely useless. This model has a known issue with the SSD hard drive--Asus admits it--that slows down performance TREMENDOUSLY compared to previous models. I'm not talking about a little lag here and there. I can deal with that. No, this is like 2 - 3 minute wait time to open anything, install anything, do anything. Believe me when I say it's just awful. The only thing that fixes it is installing a new SSD, which starts at $70. Considering I barely had the cash for this machine at all, this was disappointing to learn to say the least. I am hoping to sell this somehow and get the 1002HA...though thanks to this experience I am definitely a bit hesitant....more info
  • Awesome netbook in a nice tight little package
I bought this for my 15 year old daughter and could not be more pleased. She uses it all the time. The screen, at first, seemed really tiny to me but I got used to it right away - I was also concerned about durability but if your teenagers are anything like mine then you have nothing to worry about - this thing is a brick and one amazing little gizmo. My wife and I like our daughter's so much that we're getting another one for the family just to have in the living room for browsing while we watch TV....more info
  • ASUS eeePC 900 16BG
Awesome Netbook! I did have a problem with it after receiving it, it ran very slowly and after two days the screen gave out. I contacted ASUS and the had me ship it to them for repair. One of the requirements was not to send it US mail as the unit has a higher percentage of being damaged. (This is how it was shipped to me from Amazon). The unit was not repairable and they shipped me a new one. WHAT A DIFFERENCE. This is a great tool. Quick and fast on start up, easily customizable and everything worked out of the box.

Only gripe is that Amazon SHOULD NOT USE THE USPS for shipping, this is what caused the damage....more info
  • Great Mobile Laptop
I am not going to say this is a perfect laptop. But you have to go into it knowing it is underpowered and undersized. I use eeectl to juice up the cpu a bit and i can actually get an instance of wow to run on the lowest settings. I use a 16gb sd card as a second drive and this has replaced my other laptops when i travel locally. The size, weight, webcam, sound quality, speed (with eeectl in use) is really good for most users that want to brows the web, listen to internet radio etc...

Windows XP home is worth the extra money for most users instead of linux, i have nothing agains linuc but if you are buying this pc then you probably want to go with something a bit more user friendly.

THE ONLY DOWNSIDE i really think this pc has is upgrading its ram on the 900 series if difficult because there are issues with certain ram not working or you have to get a low power consumption ramstick to upgrade, a it of a hassle when upgrading your laptop. Thats why this gets 4o5 stars...more info
  • Tech Support / Warranty Return sucks
The title says it all: Tech Support / Warranty Return sucks. It took several calls and all of a day to finally get an RMA. Asus has had the unit (PC 900 XP)in their hands now for two weeks -- I've heard nothing from them about status of repair or about the return of repaired/replacement unit.
